Tampa, New Orleans, Houston and Dallas in the middle
of summer...*ick*...no thanks.)

Cost can be a large factor, that is more easily quantified because weather
is all in the eyes of the beholder. Summer heat and sunshine is my preference
regardless of locale. I'd rather have the price break of being 'off season',
even if it means I sweat a little. Then again, I live in Dallas, and would
happily host y'all. That's why Toronto can sometimes be the most sensible
compromise (and with the exchange rates can be a more economical trip than
other locations)

Have you checked exchange rates recently?? last week
it was about 1.16 to the USD. Not much savings.
especially when in times past one could count on 1.40
to 1.60 to the Dollar.

Naturally, the common people don't want war, but they can always be brought to
the bidding of the leaders. Tell them they are being attacked, and denounce
the pacifists for lack of patriotism and endangering the country. -- Herman

I've never been free to attend; came close the last time. Next year is
filling up fast for me, but I could do a Fall gathering! I would prefer
Toronto, but what about somewhere in the Smokey Mountains, Gatlinburg? The
leaves are gorgeous there that time of year, and there's a lot of
inexpensive places to stay. Another thought, how about somewhere in the
Midwest or in the general area; central location between the two coast.
I'll definitely try to make it if I can, but summer is probably out for me.

Subject: Classic FK Fic

Doris wrote:

I would like to add that I'd love to read more classic FK Fic, that is
stories written like episodes with a decent present day story and a nice
flashback.

That is my favourite type of story, and when I was managing to produce FK
fiction, my two longest efforts were written that way. (And I have to say
that the hardest thing about them was coming up with believable police
procedure, which was why there was a whole lot more emphasis on the back
story:-). Then again, just how believable was police procedure as portrayed
in the show?)The only reason I can come up with for that preference is that
subconsciously I'm still in LK denial, and to write stories that are set up
like episodes (especially with Schanke in them) is a manifestation of that -
no, they've never moved on from there! Conversely, I suppose the reason that
there seems to be hardly any stories posted these days that could
conceivably be set within the framework of an episode - or at least occuring
during that time period - is that since we're now 9 years post filming, in
an effort to keep the ideas and characters fresh and current writers have
moved on to settings of their own creation. (And using Last Knight as a
jumping-off point obviously opens up a whole lot of new storyline
possibilities.) After all, if FK was still on the air, there would probably
be lots of changes from the first season. Would Nick and Schanke, or Nick
and Tracy, still be partners? Would Lacroix and/or Janette still be hanging
around Toronto, waiting for Nick to re-discover his "true nature"? Could
Nick and Nat still believably be "just friends"? Or would she have gotten
so fed up with his third-season backsliding that she "accidentally" happened
to slip some garlic, holy water, and wood shavings into a protein shake?
Would Toronto have discovered fax machines, so Nick wasn't wasting
taxpayers' money by spending half his shifts heading off to the coroner's
office to pick up reports???

But it would still be really nice to read a "new" first, second, or third
season episode.

Price will also be a very big issue for me as well. (example: LCA is
generally in Los Angeles, the 3rd or 4th weekend in October and is
wonderful. But is very cost prohibitive because the airline ticket runs
$250-$300, plus the hotel rooms run $119/night for 3 or 4 nights.)

I'd like to see something in the Southeast or where ever I can get a cheap
non-stop
flight to. Note: if it is in the SE I'd recommend mid-spring or late-fall.

I agree that there may be many inexpensive places to stay but airfare to that
area is not cheap, and not as subject to discounts as a large city such as
Toronto. I regularly visit Gatlinburg in the fall.... it is gorgeous. When
trying to get a group of diverse people, with busy lives together, no time or
place will be universally good for all.

If people think Toronto would be too expensive, we could just go invade Libs
territory in middle America (drivable for me!!).

A good alternative to hosting an event is to have a
meet at an already established event.

Another thing to consider is not to overlap with
things that are already established.. Like LCA in
October etc. Tho lately the FKinSD folks have been
meeting at LCA.

You could schedule it to coincide with either a Ger or
Nigel play.. but usually those are found out about
with short notice, or as in the case of Ger's
performance at the Kennedy Center last September, not
at all until after the fact. So advance planning is
an issue there.

Many folks I know attend MediaWestCon on Memorial day
weekend. (in Michigan) They are already geared for
the type of fandom we are, and they have many fanzine
dealers in the dealer room, that may have that elusive
out of print zine you are looking for. They are
always open to allowing a panel on your favorite
fandom.

The same weekend every year is another well attended
event in Columbus Ohio, Marcon, that might also be
coaxed into allowing a panel (I'm sorta on the
commitee)

In years past, my friend and I ran a regional
convention out of Cleveland, just this past weekend we
were talking about resurrecting it from the ashes.
Jacqueline Lichtenberg ( who I believe is a fan of FK)
has a large website for Writers and would be
supportive of the effort, so that is a possibility.
One thing to consider about Cleveland is, that it is
centrally located and less than 500 miles from 2/3 of
the population of the US (5=1/2 hours from Toronto).
It is also rather affordable in the Hotel department,
compared to other cities.

There are many possibilities if folks are serious
about doing something.

I'm in Dayton, Ohio and my daughter lives in Columbus. If anyone is
interested, I could help organize the event if it's decided to be held in
Columbus.

Perhaps we need to do a poll for locations, and another one for time of
year. Knowing the time and place will allow people to decide if they can
attend.

Columbus offers cheaper flights than some of other Ohio cities.

I am actually in the ****VERY***** early stages of such a story. But
alas I have been in the early stages for a while. I have my idea and
an outline started, but the muse hasn't been flowing. I have tried
to work on it lately but have only made minor progress.

Good news: Once I get the outline finished it will be no time until
the actual story is finished since my 'outlines' are usually just
missing the 'ands', 'ors' and paragraph format.

Bad News: I haven't even reached the first commercial break in my
outline.

But at least there is hope. :-)

That's an idea. Just keep in mind there is NO way that we'll please everyone
(and as I've said off list, I act and sometimes auditions aren't held until a
few weeks before rehearsals start). I also have already committed to two
conventions (MidSouthCon in Memphis which I believe is in March - and actually
might be another good one to consider an FK invasion) and FenCon in Dallas the
last weekend in September (a fantastic convention to which P.N. Elrod and I are
always invited and former FORKNI-Ler Jackie Leaf runs the video room, but it is
a literary and filk convention). I also have a possible cross stitching
'appearance' due to my poem in cross stitch Memorial Day weekend....

EEEEK! For someone who doesn't have a social life, I have a heck of a social
life....

I also mentioned off-list that in the past, people have hosted "y'all come to
my house" bashes that are sort of like a huge (no)Slumber Party. People
RSVPed to get directions, brought our bedrolls and FK items, and invaded a
home.
LOTS of fun!!! Of course you have to have someone willing to do it. You can fit
a LOT of FK fans in even a small house (of course I'm a Ratpacker, I fit
anywhere....)

Subject: More FK Fan Fiction??

Hi again:

My name is Felicia, and I even though I only wrote in the beginning, I
consider myself part of the original writing crew, the one that didn't start
on FKFIC-L. I remember a lot of my peers were really upset when our smaller
group of about thirty-five people were added to the larger list without
their consent--mostly because they used pay services, such as GEnie, and AOL
had not started offering free Internet email yet. In fact, Netscape 1.0 had
just been released before I left the West coast to go pursue my M.L.S. at
Syracuse, and the small University I attended outside of Spokane, Wa only
offered Internet services to graduate students (fortunately for me, because
I went searching, I got hold of them while FK was still in it's first
season...I think, or whenever it was that Prodigy started charging hourly
rates for BB use).

The funny, really funny thing is, I posted my hundred page fanfic, called
'Memory' (which needs a rewrite if it's ever going to see the Internet
again), to this smaller group, and then to a smaller, story group (those
with 300 bps modems didn't appreciate clumsy VAX email w/out BCC). Other
'loops' developed for whatever interest, and terms like 'Nat Packer',
'Naughtie Nightie', others we shall not name, became sort of a signiture.
For example, Eve pretty much hated Natalie, and picked on her hair. Patty,
on the other hand, didn't mind her so much. I find it interesting when I
track down fanfiction our original members wrote, because attitudes towards
characters we discussed years ago came through strong and clear (in Eve's
fiction, Nat is almost always dead). While we had factions of a sort, we
never had all out 'WARS'.

The purpose the Forever Knight Fanfiction and Challenge community is not to
take the place of FKFIC-L. It's function is to provide an icebreaker, an
inroad, into writer's block. Hopefully a challenge idea will give someone an
idea for a longer story. The charter is basically unrestrictive, as long as
the writer doesn't crossover with P.N.Elrod (author's personal request to
myself), or with other vampire fantasy/horror writers.

Nancy, I've read most of your work...pretty much all I could find on-line,
and regard you as one of my favorite FK writer's. I did not go out of my way
to start another mailing list for the sake of starting another mailing list.
Although, if a person provides feedback, the story is emailed to their email
box, and that *is* a pretty neat feature LJ has.

I just wanted to let people know about the communuty because people wanted
more fanfiction. Well, to get more fanfiction, we need to get the writer's
inspired. LJ is a community that intertwines with other communities: you
start your page, you speak, people speak to you...and in a few years you end
up knowing quite a few people even though you never intended to.

LJ doesn't have to be for everyone. I, however, need all the feedback and
help I can get. I am going through an illness right now and often lack
energy, and could use some ideas for challenges. Please take a look at the
site, and if you can, let me know your ideas. You don't have to be a member
to respond to the Guestbook ('Sign Here' in Menu Bar) or respond to any of
the entries at the bottom created by "Innogen", and I will receive an email.

I was thinking about an FK con---and thought, gee, it should be near
Stratford so people could take in plays. A couple of years ago I stayed in
Kitchener, which is between Toronto and Stratford. It was very reasonable,
it was a short jaunt down to Stratford or up to Toronto (or is that left and
right? My mental Ontario map is a bit skewed). Oh, and you can go over to
Niagara and environs, too.

Just a thought.

Plain text rocks.

While posting on FKFIC-L has its peccadillos (OMG! The Disease!), and line
limits have resulted in parts numbering 1A-10E, I am far more miserable
sorting out YaBB tags and their kin when posting on a fan fiction forum
board. (Imagine my horror when I wound up moderating one for a non-FK
fandom. I'm like Natsuko Ohama at BtK: "Who *are* you people?!")

There's no place like FKFIC-L. If you have FK fanfic to post that doesn't
cross the list rules, you should post it there. That doesn't mean you
shouldn't spread your fanfic far and wide over the Internet in whatever form
or among whatever groups might be interested, but if you leave out FKFIC-L,
you're skipping a foundation of the fandom's past and a core base of fans
who don't care about factions or pictures or bells and whistles, but just
want to read a good tale. Fancy formatting and added features aren't
necessary to experience the visceral pleasure of having your imagination
engaged. It's all words on a page, making the story come alive. :)

Neither have I, but according to the definitions I found, Nick fit the bill
for possibly having been referred to as "Childe" during his *mortal*
lifetime, though the term may not have been in use by Nick's time.

I thought I remembered something about Childe referring to a knight from
reading Stephen King's Dark Tower series, which was inspired by the poem,
"Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came." This is what I found in the
footnotes on a website from...are you ready for this...the library at the
University of Toronto. Thought that was pretty odd, since it was the first
one on the list when I did a search for the poem itself. <G> Anyway,
here's the quote:

<<1] The title of the poem, and in Browning's own account the source of the
theme, is spoken as a line of nonsense by the disguised Edgar in King Lear
(at the end of III, iv).
"Childe" indicates a candidate for knighthood, the medieval sense being "a
well-born youth.">>

It's kind of chasing a rabbit from the original question about what vampires
are called, but I thought it was an interesting little coincidence that the
definition would have fit Nick.
