I know what you mean about challenges. You were the only person who
responded to the one I created.

One of the advantages of a LJ community that I'm finding is that if for some
reason you've missed reading a part of a story, it's still there days later.
With the mailing list, once you've deleted it, even accidentally, its GONE.
Makes re-reads a lot easier. Not to mention that people not on the list can
read the stories, giving a larger pool of readers.

That is why archiving is so important. And why I don't understand why
some writers don't agree to have their works archived...wherever it may
be. We have had enough problems with stories disappearing as is.

If someone ( I have forgotten his name) hadn't downloaded the stories
from the ftp archive when it was housed at PSU, we would have lost a
couple hundred stories. He was able to send me a copy on cd and then I
was able to upload it to my FTP site. ( which now is techinically a
directory on the web but we call it FTP just to keep it straight)

I was glad this weekend when Nancy Taylor, who wrote the Laurene
stories, who also has gotten into other fandoms, has sent me her stories
so I can upload what I didn't have to the ftp site. Otherwise, they
would have been lost since she hasn't had time to upload them to her web
site again.

That being said, anyone interested in an FK Con next
year? :)

I think it would be fun. I was unable to attend the NNPack's Con this past
summer and haven't met folks from other 'factions' but would love to do so.
Like you, I will always post to FKFIC-L because that was where I discovered
fanfiction, and was inspired to try my hand at writing. Not only have I learned
more about the craft of writing, but I've become more computer-savvy. I credit
FK for that. Writing was a great escape when I was laid off and had to relocate
to a city far from friends and family. I don't find the time as much now but
haven't stopped writing or reading. I'm more selective now but will read the
first chapter or two of anything posted. If it hasn't grabbed me by then, I may
not read further. While I may have preferences in genre, a well written story
will hold my attention no matter who the main characters are.

Like others have said, I prefer reading stories that are plain and unadorned.
Give me plain text, like I'd have in a book. Then again, I remember getting
to the FTP archive on a DOS-based computer using dial-up while in grad school!
I respect that some authors have put a lot of time and effort into adding
graphics and illustrations. I may visit to check it out and compliment their work
but I won't read the story that way- it's too distracting. If I have to click
through 4 layers to get to a story, I'll do it once.

In truth, I like the anticipation of a story being posted daily. In one of
my other fandoms, authors post a few paragraphs at a time... we have one story
that has been going on for over a year.... and I tune in every day for my
segment. Yes, she could have posted the entire thing by now, but what fun would
that be? Part of the fellowship of that group is the guessing, and commentary.

Personally, I'd like to see the line limit liberalized--- preparing stories
to post can take days (have to reedit in textpad to get rid of Word's extraneous
coding, and then divide into parts, making sure I'm below 275 lines....
just to make sure that PSU doesn't do something to make it longer and therefore
something that bounces and people get part 12 but won't get part 11 until the
next day) but the line limit and posting limits have never prevented me from
posting a story. Working too much? Well, that's a different story!!

I'm glad to see that the interest in still there. Who could have imagined
that 10 years after the show went off the air, we'd still be talking about it?

If you wish to have a story archived, give permission to archive to
www.fkfanfic.com <http://www.fkfanfic.com> in the first post of the story to
FKFIC-L.

If you wish to have stories added to www.fkfanfic.com<http://www.fkfanfic.com>,
you can send them (text version that looks good on a web page/browser) to
fkarchive@fkfanfic.com . I am just starting to get things worked out and
running again, but hopefully over the next several months, we can have new
content added to the site again. Feel free to send any stories from the past
several years, etc. if you wish.

OK, a couple of folks have said they would be
interested in a Con. Rather than be faction-specific,
I'd like to propose a general get-together.
Personally, I'd be inclined to return to
Toronto/Ontario, but I'd be open to other suggestions
as well (Hollywood? NYC?). Please email me OFF LIST if
you would be interested in attending. Let's assume
sometime in the summer or early fall. If I get enough
interest I'll put together an official mailing list
and we can use it to coordinate the actual event.

BTW, I checked Ger's fan club site and there is
nothing listed other than his appearances on 24 and
his NYC stint in 2007.

Although I'd use any excuse if I had the funds to go to Toronto, and Hollywood
and NYC is always exciting, they are also expensive locations not only to fly
into, but to find lodging. This would put MANY people in a situation where they
couldn't afford to go. (Besides, isn't LCA in the general Los Angeles area?)

Maybe a good touristy location that isn't quite as expensive would be better.
(I'm tempted to say "Little Rock" which is becoming a more and more popular and
"hip" distination but I'm biased<g>) Memphis comes to mind. The Dallas area
although I think lodging can be high there.

I probably won't be able to go in any case, but cost is something to consider.
The cheaper, the more people who could attend.

I would love to see a gathering of FK fans at Dragon*Con next year (Labor Day
weekend in Atlanta, GA). We could even have a panel discussion or something
put on the schedule, at the very least have a room party :)

  Just a thought :)

I agree that price will be a consideration, for me no
less than many other people. Weather will also be a
consideration, especially if this is during the
summer. (I'm not real keen on anywhere in the South in
summer, price breaks or no price breaks. I've been to
Tampa, New Orleans, Houston and Dallas in the middle
of summer...*ick*...no thanks.) I'm already planning
a trip to Europe in September so I'll be anxious to
spend my money wisely.
