Delurking briefly...

About FK & V:tM terminology ---

I hesitate to mention this, because I do not recall where I heard this
so can't actually confirm it as fact. But I was told or read once many
years back (I think about the time I first got into FK, back when it was
still in original airings) that GWD & one of the other cast, along with JP &
one of the series writers went to a live role playing session or two of V:tM
in the Toronto area before the filming began in order to get a feel for the
market and see what sort of spin they wanted to portray..

**IF** that is true, I could certainly see where some of the V:tM
concepts and idioms could easily slip a little in to their own stuff.

Didn't FK come before V:tM? I know the TV show sure used a lot from FK. The
only real vampire thing I remember before that is Dark Shadows....

Subject: PRAYER: Too Much Too Fast; Call it Crisis of Faith

Hello,

As I always say (and always *mean*) I read all prayer and related requests
and I DO pray. This is the first time I have used the "Prayer" topic header on
the main FK List; I hope I did it correctly (this is going to non-list folks
as well...that's a "rule" folks...)

I think this has been the longest, and possibly one of the hardest days of my
life. This morning I requested that my right hip MRI results be faxed to me.
They were, and I read them. No, I am not an MD. I do, however read, and
have to be able to interpret MRI results to an extent all the time in order to
determine appropriate Home Care Nursing and Therapies for my patients. Knowing
what *I* know and what my (three) doctors do not, I was able to read between
the lines, and I have a fair idea of what is going on.

Since I am speculating at this point, I will not go into gory detail except
to say that besides some strange fluid in my hip joints (both), there are also
some things in my uterus that should not be there. This explains a lot,
including the excruciating pain that I am in a great deal of the time. It just
radiates to my hip.  So, there will be a lot more doctors and a lot more tests;
and still with the crutches until they figure it out.

We are still on the same day, now. Then, my son called, in tears. He doesn't
do that much (cry, I mean); kind of prides himself on being a tough guy--except
when he is talking to his mom. He tells me an immediate member of our family
died. My step-mom's dad. He doesn't have a lot of information except to
remind me that our family member was in the hospital overnight last weekend to
rule out a heart attack; there was no heart attack, no clots, nothing. My
son then needed to hang up; he was temporarily overcome.

All of a sudden I cannot remember my SO's cell phone number, let alone my dad's.
I had to look up Roger's (SO's) number in my cell "phone book." I called
him. I gave him the very little bit of information that I had. Then, I was
just sitting there in the lobby of my building, trying to remember my dad's
phone number. No luck. Suddenly, I remembered the number where my step mom's
mom and dad live. I called and my step mom answered the phone.

Come to find out her dad actually committed suicide late yesterday morning
with a gun. Her dad was confused and afraid; there is a lot more to it than
that. His wife found him, still alive when she heard the thump in the kitchen.
The EMS folks tried to save him, but, of course they couldn't.

So, here I am in the lobby of my building with my phone, with worse and worse
information filling up my brain. I finally managed to get back upstairs. I
had told someone there had been a death in my family and I would be a little
while talking to my son.

When I got back upstairs, I was called into the bosses above me (I am/was a
boss also) office. You got it: no job. Let go during probation: "not a fit
even though you have given more than 200% trying to be one." They are
recommending me for a different RN Manager/Director job across the street at
Gentiva Rehab Without Walls, and that Branch Director wants to talk to me (but
I am not the only candidate), for which they think I am a better fit, "if I am
interested." I said "yes, but **not today.**"

The funny thing is, I didn't even want to TAKE this job, I have told some
people who are getting this. I knew there was something not right. But I was
running out of money, and I needed the medical benefits. I did manage to get
rid of my (YUCK) Kaiser COBRA, and I do have about 3-1/2 months worth of my
very expensive routine medications now. My bills are paid for the *moment.*

This all happened TODAY. I didn't have a migraine this morning, but I sure
do now, LOL.

Blessed Mother Theresa said (I am paraphrasing because I can't remember the
exact quote): "God never gives us more than we can handle; I just wish He
didn't trust me so much."

My take on that is a little different. "I was taught God never gives us more
than we can handle. Well, the Man is consistently overestimating me!"

I have never been unemployed, I mean truly unemployed before. This makes 3
times in less than 12 months. Am I having a Crisis of Faith? Well, if not,
something very close to one.

Constant pain, constant nightmares.

It is a bloody good thing there isn't a gun in this house. Despite my
Christianity, I do not believe that suicide is always an unpardonable sin.

Thank you for listening.

Love to all,
Billie-Lee

You're thinking of Kindred: the Embraced, which was the TV show based on the
Vampire: the Masquerade role-playing game. V:tM was first published in
1990.

And, to be fair, there wasn't a *whole* lot taken from FK that wasn't
already in the game. The biggest one I remember people hitting on when the
show first came out was the Haven/Raven thing, but since Haven was a V:tM
game term from the start, the only similarity there is having a dangerous
and sensual female vampire running a bar. And who can get enough of
*those*? ;)

I don't know anything about VtM, except that FK and VtM are the only vampire
worlds I know of that have the "carouche" concept. Does anyone know of any other
vampire worlds that have carouche? And would that have originated in VtM or FK?

I was watching the original Nick Knight movie. Nick's real name in that

came up with de Brabant?

If you are talking about the term, I don't think 'carouche' is used in VtM.
As for carouche type vampires, there's plenty of legends such as one in Central
America (I think) where a sort of blood sucking 'monster' feeds on livestock
as well as people. There's also Reinfield who although not a full vampire, did
crave "lower" creatures such as insects.

In some parts of the world, humans use blood from livestock as nourishment
and a feature of rituals.

My memory is failing me, but I believe that more animalistic "vampires"
pre-date the more modern concept of an intelligent, more 'civilized' vampire
who could pass as human.

The episode originally aired towards the end of the final season so that'd
make it late winter/early spring.
