Here is a newsletter from the Science Fiction Book
Club about Tanya Huff. Her new book sounds a lot like
the FK episode, "Dead of Night".

WELCOME TO YOUR SFBC BEHIND THE BOOKS NEWSLETTER

Life isn't neatly divided into clearly defined genres,
so why should books be? Tanya Huff has no problem
mixing humor with horror, and romance with both. She's
been writing since she was a kid and has been a
published novelist for two decades. We hope she
continues for many decades more.

Tanya Huff: Breaking the Bounds of Genre

Ontario, Canada is a place so variable that it may
seem to the visitor to be cobbled together from the
leftovers of other locales. 250,000 lakes--composing
1/3 of the world’s supply of fresh water--dot the
landscape, which ranges from the craggy and
mineral-rich, to wide swathes of flat, green farmland
and miles of sunken marshes. In the summer,
temperatures top 86 degrees. In the winter, they drop
to below 9. So it’s no wonder that the writing of
Ontario author Tanya Huff, author of the newly
released Smoke and Mirrors, weaves together fantasy,
romance, humor and horror so seamlessly. Defying
expectations is part of her heritage.

Huff was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1957, but
has spent most of her life in Ontario. She went to
high school in Kingston and attended college at
Ryerson Polytechnic Institute in Toronto.

Although she became a published poet at age 10, when
an uncle sent some of her poems to a local newspaper,
she turned to SF/Fantasy writing when she couldn’t get
a job in television after college. She writes in her
biography: “The year I graduated [1982] was the year
that the CBC laid off 750 employees in Toronto alone.
We were competing for jobs with people who had up to
five years experience. The cat threw up on my degree.”

She took a job at Bakka-Phoenix Science Fiction
Bookstore--the oldest surviving SF/Fantasy bookstore
in North America--in part because she loved SF and
Fantasy’s unique way of capturing human nature.
“Science fiction and fantasy deal with the big
themes--truth, honour, sacrifice, duty, consequence,”
Huff says. “They are genres where the possibilities
are endless, where imagination takes the reader by the
hand, where the question isn't so much ‘How?’ or
‘What?’ but ‘Why?’”

Embedded in the SF/Fantasy world, Huff decided to take
a chance and see if a single sentence she wrote while
bored in a class at Ryerson had a story behind it.
Three months later, she had her first novel, Child of
the Grove. It was published in 1986, and its
combination of fantastic events and characters
wizards, Gods, and magic groves all make appearances)
with the often-humorous realities of teenage life
helped set the stage for supernatural teen series like
Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Humor was an essential component of that first book.
In an interview in ParaNormal Romance, the author
notes: “I think humor is a vital part of what makes us
Human and should be in everything. You can't have
constant tension, constant horror, constant
drama--it's too emotional for the reader and a real
drain on the writer as well. There has to be a release
of tension.” Fans agreed, and it wasn’t long before
Huff was writing full-time.

In 1988, she won an Aurora award for her short story,
“And Who Is Joah?” and she was nominated for Spectrum
awards in 2000 and 2001 for her novel The Quartered
Sea and her Blood Books series, respectively. Her
newest novel, Smoke and Mirrors, follows Tony
Foster--an ex-prostitute who works on a syndicated
vampire-themed detective show--and his vampire
ex-boyfriend through a series of misadventures in a
haunted house. It’s part gothic horror, part fantasy
and part silly romp. Just what you’d expect from this
unusual Ontarian author.
-----
Smoke And Shadows
By Tanya Huff

Vampire aristocrat Henry Fitzroy and his protégé Tony
Foster battle sentient shadows from an
interdimensional world. In hot pursuit of Arra, the
last good wizard of a world they've just conquered,
the shadows threaten Earth as well. Can Henry and Tony
convince a reluctant Arra to help them face an
unstoppable force responsible for destroying her
people?
-----
Smoke and Mirrors
By Tanya Huff
After his terrifying bout with an evil wizard, Tony
Foster--production assistant of a syndicated TV show
about a vampire detective--learned that he was a
wizard himself. Now Tony and members of the show's
cast and crew find themselves shooting in a real
haunted house. And the evil it contains is dead set on
adding ghosts to its collection. . .

I think this book (Smoke and Mirrors) has been out for a while. If it is the
Tanya Huff book I'm thinking of, it is a lot like a salute to FK in some ways
- and VERY good. She's an excellent writer.
