Subject: Re: Writing in English

Quite possibly due to the heavy influence of North American-made TV programmes
(note spelling!), in England spoken English at least has adopted many terms
and phrases that you might not think are prevalent in the UK. For instance,
sweater and jumper are used interchangeably, biscuits and cookies are two
varieties of the same thing (the latter likely to be larger, more crumbly and
homemade-looking) and so on. However, from my experience it seems to be
necessary to have spent some time living or working in North America to have
incorporated certain phrases or terms into a person's own speech, even if the
accent is unchanged - a good friend says 'burglarised' (sp?) rather than
burgled in a standard Oxford (local) accent courtesy of time spent as a
student across the Pond. The other change I can often hear is the inflection
of certain words. It's these differences that make it possible to trace where
a person has been (and might be dead give-aways if someone's trying to
misrepresent their past).

The word 'forgotten' is going the way of many past participles and being lost
in favour of the simple past tense 'forgot'. Feel free to blame this on the
lack of English grammar education in schools (excuse me whilst I dust off this
soapbox). 'Misbegotten' is a word I've not heard in years. The use of
obsolete or obsolescent words also hints at the age of a person; there are
terms my parents use that I understand but do not use although I'm frequently
told that some of my use of language is unusual in a person my age. The FK
relevance is that using language appropriate to the perceived age demographic
would be vital, and possibly harder the younger the person appeared to be.

On fanfic (of which I've written a whole one so am therefore well qualified to
comment - lol), I only included characters whose voices I could not only hear
clearly in my head, but to whom I could give dialogue without slipping into
cliched expressions - I knew I wouldn't have been able to do that with Schanke
so, unfortunately, he was not included. If another character has a certain
accent, my preference would be to just try and get the words right and let the
readers hear the accent in their own heads - I understand completely the
various comments about butchered accents or phonetic English.

Not only are "thee" and "thou" overused, but what most
people don't realize is that they're the old fashioned
*familiar* forms of 'you'. <g>

What could be better? Storm day and season two arrives!!!

My DVDs arrived just as my hubby & son finished shoveling the driveway
yesterday. School & university was canceled & I hogged the TV for 3
whole hours (in the face of two teen-aged sons who usually cannot be
parted from their X-box) while I watched Killer Instinct (twice) and
Blood Money with commentaries - love that sword fight!

The colours are incredibly rich and lush compared to my worn videos, and
the actors don't mumble! They couldn't have arrived at a better time
either, since the boys should be studying for their exams this week and
next, and won't be allowed on the TV... heh, heh, heh. Oh wondrous weeks
ahead - The Fix, Queen of Harps, Be My Valentine, and on and on - my
favourite season!

I'll be lurking again for a while, 'cos I'll be too busy....

Subject: Need help

Hi everyone. I was wondering if could tell me how I could record Deb's
interview that she's giving (on FK and fanfic) tomorrow night. I plan to
listen to it, but I'd also like to record it, if that's possible. Can anyone
help me?

Stacy
