Subject: Season 2 on DVD - My Thoughts

Hi everyone,

My order from amazon showed up yesterday. I was drawn to the special
features first which are interesting, but I still really wish Sony had given
us some "deleted scenes." (I wish they would consider using the "lost
footage" from Gillian Horvath) The quality on the first 2 discs is truly
dreadful in some scenes (worse than season 1 in some cases), especially in
ones with "blue light." The worst ones I noticed after skimming the discs
were in "Bad Blood." All the Nick/Janette scenes in the heavy blue light are
very pixelated. You can barely see any detail on their faces. My own digital
recordings look much better in those cases (thank heavens for those).
However, the other 4 discs look really nice and sharp. I'm very pleased with
those. The production order will take some getting used to (I'm used to
Sci-fi's airing order).

+'s: Color improvement, sharpness enhanced, sound improvement, interesting
interviews, neat box

-'s: Heavy grain on 1st 2 discs, major problems with pixelation in
"blue-lighting" especially, *no* deleted scenes or bloopers, low quality
menu design

Overall, I suppose these are an improvement from season 1 (except the 1st 2
discs). They got lazier with the menus this time though, but the box-art is
lovely once again and the box opens the same as season 1. These are worth
collecting, especially if you have tape recordings. Season 3 on DVD will
depend on these sales as well.

Subject: Re: Season 2 on DVD - My Thoughts

I'd have to disagree. So far, I've watch eps on discs 1,5, and 6 and I haven't
noticed any pixelation at all. Frankly, given the date of the series and
compared to broadcast TV, my own DVDs and VHS tapes, I thought the discs I've
watched absolutely "beautiful."

Crisp and sharp with very good color, though the reds are a bit oversaturated
in places, but that can be fixed. The blacks were pretty awesome though. (I
judge the quality of a good TV by the way it displays black.)

There is dust and grainy-ness in places, but again not unexpected with a
12-13 year old series. And, I didn't think that on disc 1 the dust was any
worse than on the other discs.

Granted, this dust is somewhat more noticeable in the "blue" scenes on Nick's
and Janette's skin. (after you mentioned it, I went back and watched Bad
Blood). But I didn't see any pixelation. It's really interesting to watch the
N&J scene where LC is playing the violin. As the camera switches from Nick to
Janette who has a "blue" background, you can see how the dust disappears with
the camera on Nick and reappears when on Janette.

That said, perhaps the pixelation is caused by your equipment (or the discs
themselves). I replaced all of my A/V cables with gold-plated Monster cables
just before Christmas. (my gift to myself). And I have noticed a distinct
improvement in the quaility of not only DVD video, but also that coming from
the digital cable box.

While, I'm extremely pleased with the "extras", like with season 1. I would
have shelled out the cash for a bare bones Season 2 set. S2 is my favorite of
the 3.

I have to agree with you there. It isn't like FK is the director's
cut of Apocalypse Now or anything. It is an older show. I think in
one of the commentaries Ger said it was shot on 35mm film. So of
course it won't have the crispness of a current show put out on dvd
which was probably shot digitally.
I am extremely pleased with the discs and they are much better
quality than I have on my tapes.
I also agree that your equipment can affect it. I have noticed some
of my dvds are a little more grainy if I watch them on my computer
than on the television.
Personally I saw absolutely nothing to complain about. And as Gaelin
said, I would have bought them barebones.

As you know, my father has been in the hospital for
going on a month now. The doctors were not sure what
was wrong. First they said a seizure, then maybe
strokes, then maybe Parkinson's Disease.

The latest update is that it may have been severe
reactions to medication he was taking. They are
weening him off of it and he may be able to come home
on Friday or Saturday.

Thank you all for your good wishes.

Happy New Year!

Given that this is a very caring community, I wanted
to post a question. I was contacted by a local
(Seattle) radio talk show regarding the question of
whether or not people have felt an urge to donate time
as well as money in volunteering after the wake of the
tsunami. How have you tried to help, if at all?

EGAD! Desperate times call for desperate measures, Paula!
Quick, grab a screwdriver, a hairpin, and a hammer. By careful
application of these 3 simple tools, you should be able to break
into the parcel box and retrieve your DVDs.  {Do you have a drill?}

Note: If you get caught, stare your accuser in the eye and state
with exasperation: "I thought I heard a kitten crying from inside -
of course I had to try to rescue the poor little thing!"
If you've already got the box open, and the busybody asks where
the kitten is, just say, "Oh, great! Now you've scared it off! Thanks
a lot!" Then grab your package and incriminating tools and sneak
away to your apt., calling, "Here, kitty, kitty . . . ."

Just an idea. You could also call the manager, but that's not
nearly as exciting - or as quick. Good luck in your quest!

I like pretty much all NN. But if I had to pick one...probably Alternate
continuation. I like when stories continue after late 3rd season (some post
LK too) but manage to keep both Schanke and Tracey. What can I say, I love
Schanke's character. I really think that Nick and Don's relationship/
friendship could have been explored better. Just my .02

I like Valentine stories or Unholy Trinity. Alternate Universes are good,
too. I was loving Jarvinia's 'Another Knight' series, but there haven't
been any new ones lately.
I know KC is a diehard Nick/Natpacker. She'll read Unholy Trinity stories,
but she prefers Nick/Nat-centric works, in any form.
For those of you that may have emailed her privately, she's been down for
two days with a migraine. I know the Yuletide Awards voting deadline is
tomorrow night, so she's going to try and get online by Saturday to tally
votes and announce the winners. Please be patient if she doesn't get to it
though, as these migraines leave her nearly incapacitated. She's lying down
in her darkened bedroom with the door closed, and taking heavy doses of
painkillers and allergy meds.
She's really upset, because she can't even watch her newly arrived FK Season
2 DVD's.
Hope you all have a great new year!

Coming out of lurkdom for a moment. Being in New Zealand, along with the
Aussies across the ditch:P we have probably been more involved with the
tsunami than America. We have lost people in the Wave as the Indonesian
and Thai region is a major tourist place for us and many kiwis live
there. Also many new New Zealanders have family in sri lanka, India,
Malaysia and Indonesia. The Sri Lankan Cricket team was touring NZ at
the time of the disaster and a couple players lost family and they
decided to go home.

The donation drives here have been amazing. Kids are selling their
Christmas toys and giving their pocket money to the red cross and other
charities. Clothing, food and medical supplies are being collected on
the street and millions have been raised out of people's pockets.
On new years day I was working at the horse races and on that one day
they raised 100k from the people and all the winners gave up their
winnings. All this from a country with only 4 million people. Imagine
what $1 per person could do.

Anyone living in coastal regions need to realise that this could have
easily been them.

So go on..give a dollar...it all adds up!:P

Have a good one everyone!...and enjoy those DVDS!:) hehe its better than
Christmas:P

Ciao,
Kylie.

Thank you to everyone who has been praying and sending e-mails. It really is
appreciated. My grandmother went into the doctor today. Out of the 8 lymph
nodes they removed during her surgery 7 were cancerous. They are considering
her between levels 2 and 3 of cancer. She still is waiting to hear from the
cardiologist as to how her heart will hold up to the chemo but the doctors
want to start her on it on the 19th and they said there's a 54% success
rate. Right now the only things they can guarantee her is that she will be
able to get several chemo hats and more than likely a free wig. Right now
I'm just really glad that her condition is sounding much better than it
originally did.
Thank you all again. It means a lot.
