Dinking around, I stumbled across this book:

This sound, er, *familiar* to anyone?

Subject: WAR: Reminder about Story Headers

A number of war posts have dropped recently that did not include the
number of parts in the header information.

Pleaes remember to include the standard part

numbering [(01/01), (02/06), etc.] even if your story only one part.

Also, please include the story title in the body of your email, not
just on the subject line.

Thanks,
War Maestro

I believe her name was Emily Weiss and the episode was "Stranger Than
Fiction" (you may want to check the spelling of her last name)

Subject: Two questions

Although with the war on, I realize it may be a while before I recieve much by
way of answers. That's OK, I appreciate anyone who at least makes the effort.

1) How would you describe the sound of a basketball hitting concrete (one word,
like 'boing' or something)? I've come up with a few, but none seem to really
fit.

2) Other than in Last Act, can anyone think of times Natalie has come to the
loft to deliver new developments in a case?

Thanks much!
         -Megan

Weiss, wasn't it? It was supposed to be a parody of Anne Rice.

Yes, it was most definitely Weiss, with that spelling.
I remember that one because it also
happens to be my name.

I work in Human Resources, this morning we had a job
applicant and when looking over his application noted,
with much amusement, that he lives on Gerland Circle
Drive. I kept thinking, I want to live in Gerland.

Ok, you may return to your regularly scheduled War.

Hey sis, wanna go for a walk?
'Rose

"The true nature of the Vampire is undefined, undiscovered, inconceivably
complex, and therefore, Lots of fun!"

Never let a Merc get bored. (1/02)
Rose Thatcher
12Nov2004
Merc Central

note: The Merc Mommy General Mildred would like to extend her
apologies to the departed spirits of Sir William S. Gilbert and Sir
Arthur Sullivan for the abuse of their light opera "Iolanthe" but as
she's in a production of it right now it was hard to ignore such an
opprotunity.

Mildred was again attached to her computer. Slowly, she became aware of a
constant sound. A clicking. She looked up curiously to see where it was
coming from, and saw Rose sitting on the floor against the wall. She had a
paperback book in one hand and was holding a clicky pen in the other. The
air was punctuated by the constant clicking of the pen.
“Hey, Rose, what’s with the pen?”
Rose looked up from the book and let her eyes adjust. “Oh, just having fun.”
Mildred shrugged. “Only fun for so long.” She went back to her computer.
Rose went back to her book, an evil smile spreading across her face.

Chris snuck into the Merc Headquarters. She had arrived with Libs, but was
so fascinated with Toronto that she immediately started on her Toronto stash
of sparklies. It had kept her occupied for a long time, but now she was
ready to see the famed Merc center. A clicking caught her attention.
Rounding a corner, she saw her younger sister sitting outside a door,
reading a book and clicking a pen.
“Rose?”
Hearing her name, she looked up, realizing who it was, she jumped up and
hugged her older sister, lifting her off her feet. “CHRIS!
WherehaveyoubeenIwassoworriedaboutyou
whathaveyoubeenuptoyou’relookinggreatImiessedyousomuch!”
“Urf.” Chris hugged her sister back. “Oi’m foin. Been collectorin for my
collection.”
“Ah.” Rose nodded sagely. Collectorin is very important.
“Wot’cha doin?” Chris nodded at the book and pen.
“Ah, Mildred kicked me out of the computer room. Seems she can’t handle a
half hour of pen clicking.” Rose grinned evilly. “She can’t complain while
I’m out here.”
“Ah.” Chris shook her head at her sister. “You’se gonna get in trouble.”
She shrugged negligently, “Probably.”
“Seen Libs?”
“I think she was sneaking around the kitchen a little ago. Could be wrong.”
“much obliged.”
“No prob.” Rose sat back on the floor and picked up her pen. As the
clicking resumed, a soft ‘aaaarrrrggghhh’ was heard from the computer room.

Later, having left Libs with some extra sharp cheese and four shiny new
pennies, Chris wandered around again, trying to remember the rules her
sister had told her. “Don’t do anything that gets you whapped with a
newspaper.” As she passed the computer room she heard a dull roar that
appeared to be Rose vacuuming the floor. Mildred was heard shouting above
the noise, but only barely.
“Tripping hither tripping thither,
Nobody knows why or whither
You must clean and you must sing
'Round about the computer ring”
Chris nodded. Mildred had figured out Rose’s plan to drive her crazy, but
had determined not to let it get to her. Chris chuckled and wondered who
would hold on the longest. Rose was finally chased out of the computer room
by one of the other mercs who was tired of trying to read over the noise.

A half hour later, Meg walked by and saw a pair of shoes dangling over the
headrest of a couch. Recognizing her sister, she wandered over. “Problem?”
Rose sighed. “Nah.”
Meg shook her head. “You know, sooner or later, you actually will have to
bribe her.”
Another sigh. “Yeah.” Rose looked at her Sister upside down. “I just wanted
to torture her a little more first.”
Meg looked at her upside down sister. “Nah, don’t really want her mad at
you.” She grinned ferally. “Though I wouldn’t be too upset to see what she
did with a newbie who kept trying to drive her mad.”
“Hm.. guess I hadn’t thought of that. I’ll go take care of that now.”
Kicking her feet in the air, Rose did a backward somersault, almost hitting
a nearby table. “Oops! Hey, wanna go for a walk afterwards? I’m bored out
of my mind waiting for a job request.”
There was a nonchalant shrug. “Sure. I’ll just go tie up Katie.”
“Why don’t you bring her? I’ll need her sense of direction if I ever want
to get back.” Megan shrugged again and wandered off.

“Mildred?” Rose peeked around the corner of the doorjamb. She spied the
ever-typing Merc sitting down. She looked up as the younger merc entered
the room with all the intrepidness of a hunk of steak walking into a lion’s
den. She stood in front of Mildred and suddenly fell onto one knee, holding
a small bag in front of her.
“Sorry-I-tried-to-drive-you-crazy-please-forgive-me-and-accept-this-bribe-as-rent.”
Mildred looked at the bag. She opened it up and pulled out a long knit
tube. It was a little less than two meters long. It varied from green to
blue to purple in jewel tones. It was patterned randomly. It was pointed at
one end, with a little poof of yarn. She looked at Rose. “What the heck is
it?”
Rose grinned. “It’s a HAT!”
Mildred looked back at the newly proclaimed hat. “A hat?”
“Sure, see?” She put the open end on Mildred’s head, and twisted the tube
around her neck so the pointed end fell over one shoulder. “It’s a hat and
a scarf at the same time! Made it myself. I figured you might need it,
seeing as it’s colder than a vampire’s nose out there right now.”

Mildred chuckled. "Ok, that works. It was fun watching what you'd do
and how you'd handle this. Good going." And she grinned, a rather
evil Merc grin.

<LOL> Can't read all those vampire romances anymore. Reading NNpacker fanfic
has completely ruined my enjoyment for any non-FK romances.
