Julia Poyer said: "He is always struggling with the

fact that he has to work so much harder to control his
natural urges, makes him holier than every day
people."

Megan Hull said: "I don't know about this. I have a

that he manages to resist the temptation make him more
sober than other people?"

We all struggle against "natural" urges.(The "natural
man", it is said, is an enemy to God.) Alcoholism,
blood-ism, judgementalism, dishonesty, disloyalty,
fear, despair. The vampire in folklore I think serves
the purpose of personifying the visceral in human
experience. I see in the character Nick (not to
mention Angel, and to a lesser extent the
Spock/Data/Odo/Seven character of ST) an archtype of
that struggle in all of us, a mirror in which to look
at that aspect of human nature.

Subject: Stratford

This weekend I had the fun of seeing both Goodnight Disgrace and Do Not Go
Gentle in Stratford. I have to admit that I went expecting to enjoy the
second play, but not being a great fan of serious drama, I thought I would
probably yawn my way through the first. Au contraire - they were both
wonderful! Maybe it was because this was the first time I'd ever sat within
spitting distance - literally - of the stage, and therefore able to see
every nuance of movement and facial expression. Nigel Bennett did an
excellent job of transforming from a wheelchair-bound octagenarian, wheezing
and shaking, to a man in the prime of life. And back again - twice. The
first time he opened his mouth and a Southern accent came out, though, it
was quite a shock! (Although I have to say that the accent tended to come
and go a bit:-))

Brendan Murray as Clarence Lowry, Conrad Aiken's protege, was outstanding
too, and Richard McMillan (Brother Matthew in Dying to Know You) was
hilarious as a cynical, effeminate friend of Aiken's, badly stricken with
Montezuma's Revenge. The only disappointment was the size of the audience -
there were only about 20 people there.

Afterwards, there was no question of waiting at the stage door - the actors
all came trooping through the lobby while we were putting our coats on.
Unfortunately I didn't manage to work up the nerve to ask for an autograph.
And I missed another opportunity a bit later - not looking where I was going
while windowshopping, I almost walked into Nigel Bennett who was pushing his
daughter in her stroller. Lacroix with a baby stroller?! The mind boggles!

I'm glad to say that the audience for Do Not Go Gentle in the evening was
much better. Geraint Wyn Davies must be a human Energizer Bunny to maintain
that level of energy - it was amazing. Hearing him speak with a Welsh accent
was delightful. There were times when he was quoting stretches of Dylan
Thomas' poetry that I stopped listening to the words and just let the voice
wash over me. The man could make the phone book sound like Shakespeare.

The reviewer in the Toronto Globe and Mail wasn't as overwhelmed as I was by
Goodnight Disgrace (although he liked Do Not Go Gentle). However, he did say
of Nigel Bennett that he was a "gentle actor" (huh?) who brought "clarity
and dignity" to his scenes. And he mentioned that Geraint had played the
Malcolm Lowry role in Toronto in 1985 (apparently one year before doing Do
Not Go Gentle for the first time). Now wouldn't that be a dream production -
a 20-something Geraint opposite Nigel Bennett at his current age!

And incidentally, both of them look great - they could do a Forever Knight
movie tomorrow.

In the brief bio in the program, Geraint doesn't mention FK, but Nigel
"starred as the powerful and seductive Lucien Lacroix in the television
series Forever Knight." Which makes me start to wonder which 2 words could
best sum up Nick's character. But that's a whole different subject.

Oh, and one more thing - in the first scene, Aiken's nurse asks him why he
has a scar "shaped like a cross" on his head. (Turns out it was from an
accident horsing around with Lowry as a much younger man.) Very appropriate!

I was at Valleycon in Fargo this past weekend, and someone had dressed
up as a cow for the costume contest. So, of course I thought of Nick.

There were also two cute kids in the costume contest. One little girl
was a vampire fairy and a little boy was Dracula. They both had blonde
hair, IIRC.

Whew - finally did it.
Stratford was wonderful.. I think Mary summed it up wonderfully.
Although I do have to add that I am kind of glad that Nigel wound up
doing the lead. (Not that I am happy about Leon's medical issues) It
is just that if he and Nigel hadn't switched roles, Nigel would have
only been in one scene!!! Like Mary, I had excellent seats for both
shows. And I seeing Nigel with the baby stoller was priceless...
yep, there is a fanfic in the works.... :)

I also want to thank Will, Lynne, Greer and Anna for Toronto. It was
great meeting all of you and the tour was wonderful. (Thanks, Will! -
How did the meeting go today?)

I just got home so the pictures will probably not be uploaded until
later in the week.
The tour -
Sadly the water tower wasn't there, but the building still had it's
aura. I almost got all giggly at the studio (just thinking how the
cast went up and down these stairs each day) Finally got to see the
Coroner's office (whoo hoo!) Hey, when I was walking back to the car
after taking a picture of The Apartment Building of the Damned, some
guy tried to hit on me.
Also I think it was kind of ironic that the site for the plane crash
in BB1 is actually right across the street from the house that played
the Schanke residence.
That's all I can think of right now. There may be more later.

I don't know why I'm chiming in on this, since I think odds are low that
I'll be producing any future fanfic...but, ya never know what might happen
now that I'm back in the frozen wastelands.

Anyway, I do like adult warnings...call me old fashioned, but there's stuff
that is age appropriate. I also tend to do violence warnings since I know
some folks are sensitive to it and I respect that.

However, I'm also old and crabby and probably could rightfully be judged
egotistical and just don't want to do any further labeling as it feels
constraining.

And you miss tons of wonderful stories by only going for the narrow
section you currently prefer. I have found amazing viewpoints by
reading authors whose outlook was radically different from mine. For
instance, I don't care for the third season and Tracy and Vachon:
however, Apache's fabulous stories gave these (to my eyes) colorless
and shallow characters a depth and complexity I never imagined. If I
stuck to the familiar and comfortable I would have missed that, to my
loss. Same with unbearably sad stories, or unbearably upbeat stories.

Well, I will not label my stories. Read 'em because you enjoy my
writing, or the title interests you, or you've just got nothing else
to do at the time. Or skim it and think, "oh, gee, another one of
those silly stories. Forget it."

I've found skimming is perfectly adequate to categorize a story. If I
find stuff I personally find fits in my "not to my taste" category, I
move on.

Skim. It works. And somehow the fandom has staggered along since 1994
without this---there's no reason to change now.

I've reread some fics dozens of times. Great. I know which authors I
can count on for what I want. And gee, sometimes they surprise me and
throw me a story that doesn't fit the familiar mold, and it's still
worth it.

Others have offered valid suggestions---cruise the faction websites,
or stick to authors who are "safe". But there's not gonna be any
labeling from this old-timer.

Sorry to be cranky, but it's been a long day, and I just got back from
LCA so I'm tired and need to do laundry.

Catching up on digests, I thought I'd throw in my two cents.

I think any "labels" should be left up to the story's author.

Since fkfic-l requires ADULT: headers on fiction with adult content, that's
not much of a problem there, but it could be a problem if the story is
posted someplace other than fkfic-l, so I don't see any problem with an
adult content warning. A warning of violence of slash content could also be
useful to know, the latter only because some people don't want to read
slash fiction.

I can't conceive of reading an ending first, but that's just me.

It qualifies for free shipping at the US site too. Super saving
shipping is a little slower, but since I will probably get a set from

the sales for Season One were really that awful as many online sources have
said.

He said that they weren't, because if they had been, Sony would not have
produced the Season Two DVDs.

He also talked a bit about his stint on commenting on some of the eps, which he
did with Ger. He said it was really hard for him, because he would just fly up
to Toronto once a month to visit the production, and communicated other times
by phone, so didn't have all those funny stories or insider bits that make
commentaries fun to listen to. He found it really hard to talk about stuff that
happened 11 years ago! But apparently Ger was his chatty self and took up the
slack. Jayne L'argent also mentioned that Nigel had just finished doing his
commentaries.
