Subject: Licensing

I love the ideas on how to continue the series. Unfortunately, no one has
mentioned the rule by which all Media Copyright Enforcers live...licensing.

ANYTHING done as a Forever Knight property would have to be licensed through
Sony. That means new novels (or short story collections), graphic novels or
comic books, multi-media presentations, movies, films, etc. The cool thing is
that copyright holders tend to leave fandom alone if their work is in a
non-competing medium and/or it doesn't look like the work will infringe upon
the copyright holder's ability to make money from the property. The bad thing
is that once starts looking too professional or too much like 'the real thing,'
the lawyers get involved.

If you're really interested in seeing more FK in some format, contact Sony.
Realistically, they couldn't give a damn. The reason a project gets made is that
a company can make a hefty profit on a project with a minimal cost outlay or
that someone Very Important is interested in a project and Sony wants to make
nice. They're not interested in making a million dollars; they need to make tens
of millions of dollars, or it's just not worth it to them to expend the
resources it would take to deal with a licensing contract.

Ever year I have several people contact me to find out how they can get their
Forever Knight novel published professionally. Every year I tell them the same
thing - until Sony offers a license (and some damned-fool publisher is
smart-enough to pick up that license) it can't be done. At least, legally.

But, that being said, it never hurts to ask Sony. FK had a very large following
in the entertainment community when it aired. You never know when todays
Admin Assistant will become a Development Exec at a large company. I don't even
want to discuss how many people remember Kolchak: The Nightstalker as a major
part of their formative process, to the point where someday someone will get the
rights together long enough to make a movie. But stuff comes back. Today it's
I Dream of Jennie and The Dukes of Hazard, tomorrow it might be FK.

Don't forget that Universal and NBC had two new vampire series either proposed
or in development last fall(Transylvania and the new Dark Shadows
respectively), but both were relegated to the land of limbo when Van Helsing
failed to be the big box off success they'd hoped for.

Consider the impact the internet has on prolonging the longevity of a series -
more people have read my FK fanfiction on line than have ever read my book.
The internet is the perfect, inexpensive content delivery system for text.

As long as Forever Knight isn't forgotten completely, it still has a chance to
return. So be proud, be public, and be creative.

Actually, I'd heard Dark Shadows wasn't picked up as the new version was
awful.

But I, and I'm sure others, also know about licensing. I thought we were just
playing a "what if" game. I know several people contacted me off-list when my
Atomic Mouse parody was published begging me to beg the publisher to put out
a non-parody FK comic. I had to explain there's no use me even asking. I know
the publishers and it is a mom & pop operations - there's no way they could
afford the licensing rights, or even begin looking into it. Well, that and they
only publish "fuzzy animal" comics<g>

You never know what will be resurrected from the dust - which is why those
who want to see FK back professionally in some for or another should let Sony
know.

A special wave and salute should go out to the Kickstart the Knight crew, who
will NOT let FK be forgotten.

Platinum Disc doesn't have a web site. And be very careful what you buy
from them. They do NOT check what they put on their DVD's. They will
just as easily put the wrong thing on the DVD and then don't care about
rectifying it. If two movies, series, etc have the same name they will
pick the first one they run into without checking to make sure it is the
right one.

I know this from experience!

AFAIK, books are the only way to go. Realistically, the actors would
not reprise their roles and I just think a "Son of FK" series would be
very, very wrong. <g>

Cartoons? Graphic novels? Nah. I wouldn't be interested in that. I
find that words are much better (and as someone else said, i prefer to
paint the pictures in my head, not look at someone else's pictures). I
want FK on an adult level, and I fear that cartoons would be more
kid-oriented. I've seen the X-Files comics, and they were pretty
awful, especially the artwork. I wouldn't want FK to go that route.

delurking briefly...

Regarding FK in other media format discussion... I would love to see any of
the options, although my preference would be movies with the same actors if
possible. I know that one of the actual comic companies a few years ago had
tried to get permission to do a comic series, and was in negotiation with
them, but the negotiations fell through.

I was quite disappointed by that turn of events for several reasons, one
being that I think if that had happened, I think it would have been easier
to get movies now. Maybe if the comic company that had tried to negotiate
that previously were to try again, maybe they might have better results now,
since Sony's decided to release the DVD's.... I hope they are still around
on the list, to see this thread.

Slinking back into lurkdom now...

Hugs,

I'd go for the "similar plot, different vampires" route. They could set
it in NYC, or London, or Tokyo. . . just about any big city would make an
interesting setting for its own underground vampire community. If they
wanted, they could include guest shots, in modern times or flashbacks, with
original FK actors. If they felt they were too old to play the same charas
again, it would still be fun to see them guest-star in other roles.
If the people who made "Gargoyles" did it, I could see how it could work
as a cartoon, too, though. If they showed it in primetime or sold it direct
to video, censoring it for the kiddies shouldn't be an issue. Anime dubs
always make me cringe, so rather than real anime, if they wanted the
Japanese style of animation and storytelling, I would suggest a
"Cybersix"-like collaboration-- a show animated by the Japanese for North
America. Then the animation and storytelling would be of a good quality,
but it would also be specifically made for the NA audience. That way the
original FK actors' voices are the ones the charas were designed for, so
they wouldn't seem badly-acted or out of place, and also there wouldn't be
the rampant Westernization seen in anime dubs. But since so much animation
on American shows is contracted out to Korea or Japan as it is, the two
above suggestions might be practically the same thing. *shrugs*

I would love to see more FK in any media format,
but with the original actors. I have no problem
with there age, however I believe any remakes with
new actors in the KEY ROLES would fall on it's face,
(aka the new Dark Shadows).

Is all of the above an option? :-)
A TV movie or two would be nice if the actors behind the main
characters could be interested in reprising the roles for a
continuation past Last Knight. My 5 cents says you could entirely
disregard the fact that the cast is now older. Just shot the film
without any explaination. The true FK fans will be the only ones
who catch the "error". And I think we'd be too happy with a
telemovie to make much of a fuss.
FK as books could work - heaven knows we've got enough fan fiction
to prove that the interest is out there. A series of books that
build upon themselves, establish an arc and interconnect into a
larger story - would be what would capture my attention today.
I can't quite see FK as a cartoon. Maybe an anime.... but boy I'm
not quite sure.
Same plot different actors... I know some consider this heretical,
but I honestly would not be surprised to see this happen in a few
years. Recycling proven ideas is something that Hollywood and the
television studios do. I can imagine a reinterpretation of the FK
story using new actors and new scripts about the same basic story
framework. It could be terrible. It could be quite good. The
recent remake of BattleStar Galactica really does seem to have been a
good example of how to follow in the footsteps of a preceding show.
The remake of Dawn of the Dead shows how you can remake something and
loose the essential magic of the original. Still, I believe a
remake is far more likely than the original cast being assembled for
any kind of ongoing series. An interesting idea that has just
occurred to me is what if Ger was willing to take the LaCroix role
over for a remake? Perhaps not even as a constant role but as a
frequent guest star? That might be a different enough character
that he would do it because it interests him professionally.
I personally could see a graphic novel series working. Find the
Dark Knight Returns series by Frank Miller (a large bookstore
frequently has it in their graphic novels area) to see what I am
thinking of. This is not an Archie comic book. It is a medium that
gives you the "signature" visuals combined with the ability to hear
the characters' thoughts. If I had the drawing talents... this
would be what I would do instead of the odd fan fiction.

In years past, I've thought of a couple of ideas for how to play
with FK in different medias.
1) make an electronic picture book. This would be a series of
webpages linked together to form a book. Each page would have a
picture of the most "dramatic moment" in the scene and then written
dialogue and description. I've thought the pictures could be screen-
captures from the series (much as some folks have done music videos)
or generated using graphical modeling tools or (my personal favorite)
done as photos of LEGO characters and scenes or even as "live action"
photos of real people (get a group of FK fans together and go to
Toronoto for a week and really "shot the show")....

2) the graphical power of modern computerized games is incredible.
These things look like movies more than computer games. There are
game development systems I've seen that are really quite reasonable
in price (only a few hundred dollars for the professional version).
If you had one of these that could "play back" from a predefined
script... you could create a entire episode that
would simply be "playing the game".

The scary thing about that idea is I had the same one when I saw Ger in the
last Robocop spin off... with the bleached hair and the down right nastiness of
the character he was playing, I immediately thought that either a Cousin had been
the make up artist or that he was using Lacriox as the influence for the role

Ger doing Lacroix would be scary enough to get it back on air and I don't mean
any disrespect to Nigel Bennett... hell he's the inspiration!!!

hope not too OT

LC decides to move on & Nick is alone

Questionable whether Ger would agree. I heard/read somewhere that he
doesn't like to return to an old project... that he likes to always
do new things since it is more exciting.
Would FK - the next gen, be 'new' enough?

This visual made me laugh and laugh. Poor Nick! Someone's gotta take this as
a plotbunny. That is probably the suckiest moment of being a parent, the
realization that you have become the one person in all the world you were
determined you wouldn't be. Yeah, in a lot of ways I've become my mother
over the past 15 years and what a learning experience that has been!

And can you see Nick trying to cope with someone as angsty and brooding as
himself? How would his patience hold out if confronted with a fledge whose
moods and attitudes mirrored his own? Would he come to understand Lacroix a
bit better?

You all have great ideas on this matter. I've always liked the audio book-
radio drama idea, as I had my first FK dream about it. It would be nice to put
a CD on, shut your eyes, and imagine FK. One thing I've also liked is the idea
of picking up where the series left off about thirty years later. The first
choice for the cast would be the actors' children, picking up from their parent's
respective roles. I figure, at least one of them would be happy to "fill the
fangs" for thier parents. If they are not interested, the second call would go
out to present FK fans and their children to fill in other necessary roles. I
already know of great selections for Natalie, Janette, and should flashbacks call
for it, Fleur. If a key role was still not filled, the third tier would fall
to actors with similar backgrounds as Geraint, Catherine, Nigel, Deborah, and
the like. Just my dos centavos. Have a great day!
