And she's a carouche (like Screed) since the dog

Subject: Least Favorite Episode

I seem to be virtually alone in the opinion, but hands down, my "worst FK
episode" vote goes to "Blackwing." Which is odd, considering that Gillian Horvath
(a very nice lady whom I've met and done writers' panels with more than once)
also wrote most of my favorite episodes, including "Fever" and "Queen of Harps."
I think I dislike "Blackwing" because in it, Nick is uncharacteristically mean
and insensistive to Nat. It also always struck me as out of character for him
to so eagerly fall into the sack with a mortal babe (even if it was on some funky
"astral plane"). And then there are the First Nations/native guest actors who,
while they're nicely ethnically authentic and all that, er... can't act. Shrug.

I like "Blind Faith" despite the cheesy ending. My favorite part is Perry
romping through the weeds to put the bite on the bad guy, a scene in which the
viewer is treated to "doggie cam." (!!)

That's not necessarily true. It is not who or what brings you over that makes
you a carouche, the only cannon we have says it is what your first feeding of
blood is from that makes you a carouche.

So, if her first feeding was from a human, she'd be a full vampire, not a
carouche.

Plus, the other two carouches we have seen were quite different from the other
vampires - Screed and the unnamed one in the bushes that LaCroix feeds in the
flashback. Carouches seem to be a bit more feral, or something. She seemed more
like an everyday vampire although it could be a gradual process.

Blackwing was on of my favorites. The reason Nick was so insenative was
what he leanred in the vision, from the girl. She took some of the demon
away and Nick wanted more of it gone but she died in the end. She did it
and Nat didn't. A human feeling on his part.

I have two comments on "Blind Faith"

> From: Knight Ranger
> I always had a problem with Perry bringing Jody across.
> I mean, did she drink his blood in return? Or, like other
> characters did she just turn without sharing blood.

I thought that it would have been Nick who gave Jody her first feeding,
since it was my impression that Nick walked into her apartment right after
she first woke up. He could have given her a sip and then gone out to get
her more. But that leads to an interesting question - if Perry bit her and
then Nick gave her her first feeding would she be carouche or full vampire??

My second comment is that, in the show, the soundtrack had a lot of whining
for Perry. It drove my dog (who also happened to be a Goldern Retriever)
nuts. She would come over to me and look worried and uncomfortable. I
wonder what the soundtrack bites (sorry) were saying in "dog."

On Forever Knight theroy and any vampire myth, in order for anyone to cross
over they must be biten and drink the blood of the vampire that bit them or
the master can take over. Janette brought Nick to LaCroix to bring him
across, she did not do the task. Perry attacked her, I don't see how she
came across. A Carcouche a lower form of vampire.

I am with you 100% for just the same reasons! The characterizations
didn't ring true and it was painful to watch the guest actors deliver
those lines so ...woodenly. OY!
However, I gotta admit that Nicky-boy looked pretty hot in a few of
those scenes. Sadly,it still wasn't enough to save the episode from
awfulness.

As for my favorite, depends on the mood, but"Fever" and "Curiouser and
Curiouser" top my list consistently.

In "Blackwing" I don't think Nick is insensitive to Nat at all, more like
the opposite. It seems Nat always gets jealous when someone else comes close
to curing Nick instead of herself (such as Monica - Feeding the Beast). As
to his relationship with Marian, that shouldn't be held against Nick. They
had a special connection. Throughout the series Nick and Natalie are
portrayed mainly as "good friends" and Nat has encouraged Nick on several
occasions to go for "love" so to speak (such as Emily Weiss in Stranger than
Fiction). "Necks of the week" are pretty common in season 3 too especially
with Janette's absence. Anyways, I found "Blackwing" to be a very
interesting episode.

I don't think it is which VAMPIRE you take blood from - but what you actually
feed from for nourishment. You wake up hungry, Screed says.

I've always used "first feeding" as human vs. animal, not vampire master from
whom you may take blood from to complete the transformation.

Hi Libs and Everyone:

Quoting Libs:

Good point and here's another question from that
episode. When Murray brings Jody across,
wouldn't he have needed to give her some of his
blood? That would have to affect her in some
way. And how would the human-animal link affect
both Jody and Murray? Interesting
speculation....

I do agree with Libs on the First Hunger--that
sets the vampire's choice of prey (human/animal).

As for the feral thing, I think it's a gradual
change (note: I don't say descent) into the feral
side. Along these lines, I believe that
werewolves supposedly evolved over time with each
full moon, becoming more feral as time went on.

Thanks

I wasn't refering to her first feeding as a vampire.
I was refering to her crossover conversion. When Nick
comes in to the apartment, she has already crossed
over and is a vampire.

Does that mean she drank Perry's blood? Or was it
Vampire Immaculate Conception?

I don't think this is the case at all. Not one of my
favorite episodes but... I don't think Nat is jealous
that someone else will cure Nick. I think that Nat,
being a scientist who actually cares about the well
being of her patient, is trying to point out to Nick
that there are no "quick fixes" to his condition. He
should know that given his past failures but he seems
to disregard her treatments and suggestions and always
seems to go for the snake oil salesman with promises
of a miracle cure. So like a man. As for Feeding the
Beast, Nat didn't discourage him from doing 12-step
but to try it with caution (I have never really
understood why he totally abandoned that course
because it seemed to be helping him) As for Marian,
she didn't "cure" him, she took away his guilt
(something I might add, he should have been able to do
on his own) He remained a vampire.

Or was there blood in the apartment... or maybe she ate the UPS man ;-D Or
maybe the first hunger didn't hit her immediately, at least until after Nick
arrived. Because of his looking down on Screed for being a carouche, I have a
feeling although he wouldn't let her attack a human, he'd provide her with
bottles of human blood.

Of course this is another inconsistancy<g>

What about when Nick brought Richard across. Maybe it's been too long since
I've seen that episode, but my memory has Nick biting Richard, then when
Richard wakes in the loft, Nick gave him a bottle. Am I wrong? And I agree,
FK was not consistent. The writers really did some loops, and there are
several episodes that Nick is acting totally NON-Nick, and so are other
characters.

I think the dog's name was Perry. And it was the dog that brought her over.
There is a scene where the dog's eyes go red and he bares his teeth at her.
That's when it happened. At this point in the series, I don't think Nick
wanted to bring anyone across.

>How weird would it be to have a dog as your Master/father?
>(Who's the master & who's the servent?)

Ah, but that describes any Guide Dog's relationship with his blind person.
These dogs are very intelligent with a drive to lead rather than follow.
They are trained to make decisions; they are taught how and when to disobey
their master's commands. It's a very interesting relationship not suited to
every person or every dog. Partners are carefully selected, personalities
are matched, and both must be trained in how to work together.

Subject: Least Favourite Episode

One thing that strikes me, especially looking at the lists of least
favourites, is that there are basically two quite different reasons why
people dislike an episode. First, you have those that are essentially
no more than hack writing, transferring to FK melodramatic cop plots and
adding a bit of vampire superpower of the worst sort. You know what I
mean: Nick flying to the rescue, ripping the door off a car, and
snarling fang-face at the guy he's arresting. Episodes like that have
no character development, and minor (if not downright inaccurate)
historical scenes. That would seem to cover "Dead Air" and "Spin
Doctor" from Season One; "Capital Offence", "The Code", "Amateur Night",
and "The Fire Inside" from Season Two; and "Jane Doe" from Season Three.
Such episodes have nothing positive to offer; but their offensives are
negative too: they are, so to speak, *passively* bad.
Then you have those episodes that offend against the series.
*Actively* bad. But here you have dissent, since they may actually have
bits that people love intermingled with the bad stuff. "Blind Faith" is
a classic example. I like Perry the seeing eye dog to Tracy's old
friend. I loathe Perry the vampire dog that brings his mistress across.
  I could seriously do without the Hound of the Baskervilles connection;
but I like the idea that a dog bitten by a vampire turns rogue. Get the
point? How you feel about it all depends on the relative strength of
your reaction to each of the good/bad sides of the episode.

Now the episode *I* hate the most is "Last Knight". But maybe not for
the reason you think. Of course, if the show had to end, I wish they
hadn't killed everyone off. But the truth? The whole series had a
tragic air to it. A tragic ending is appropriate. I don't even mind
the basic story concept: it's a horribly consistent development in N &
N's relationship, given Nick's past propensities.
But it's a really, really badly written episode from a technical
perspective. The writers were trying to have it all. Everyone dies
(but there's an out, 'cause we don't actually see Nick staked); everyone
dies (but it isn't *really* a tragedy, because the final scene has the
sunrise, which symbolizes a positive outcome, maybe that they're
together in the afterlife). Nick's a suicide, which by his religion
means he's damned for despair (but he killed himself by proxy, so maybe
that doesn't count). Nick's killed Natalie, murdered once again (but
it's okay because her love redeems him, so he'll go to heaven after
all). Someone obviously thought all this was a peach of an idea; but
*I* notice more than a little fuzz on their thinking.
Besides, the first time I watched it, I guessed how it was going to
end at the beginning of Act Two. Even before Natalie started to work on
Nick, I guessed what would happen. The only bit I didn't guess was
LaCroix's involvement as proxy in the suicide. What's more, as soon as
the guy grabbed the gun in the squad room I guessed Tracy would get
killed too. They were tugging too hard at the heartstrings: seemed
more like puppet strings. I sat through to the end in stunned
disbelief. Surely, I thought, there has to be some plot twist coming?
But no. They really were *that* obvious.

My second-least favourite is "Let No Man Tear Asunder". Again, it's
very badly written. The plot depends on a quite ridiculous number of
coincidences to make it work.

I have always heard it was a Norton Commando, tho
lately on another board someone made a good case for
it being a Norton Atlas. (photo comparison) Its
definately a Brit Bike, but not a Triumph.
