A release date immediately after the winter holiday
(Hannukah/Christmas/Eid al Fitr) gift season? Could they do anything
else to depress sales figures? Sigh.

Actually, this is GREAT for me and at least some other people who are likely
to get money and/or gift certificates for Christmas. In fact, I'm more apt to
be able to buy it right after Christmas than if it'd been released earlier.

I normally request "gift certificates" for places like Amazon from "Santa"
and anyone who asks.

to do a little more advertising so that everyone

What do they expect after sitting on the properties

As for more advertising, that just costs money, which drives up the price of
the DVDs even more, and isn't always affective in "cult" situations like there
where fandom is pretty much connected on the Net, through clubs, at
conventions...

Normally, I'm all for as much advertising as one can get, but it is VERY
expensive. I was surprised to see the advertisement on Sci Fi channel with the
first one. If anything, in my opinion, they need to lower the price to sell
more,
not raise it to cover the cost of more advertising. Of course they need to
get the word out, but most properties are NOT advertised on television, yet I
find out about it - Land of the Lost, V the Series, Wonderwoman, etc.

How do I find out about the release of these shows? Inserts into other DVDs,
displays at the stores, on-line sources such as Amazon, and the biggest is
probably word of mouth <g>... By far, word of mouth.

The best thing fans can do, is spread the news far and wide. Those of us
involved in general science fiction fandoms should let our friends know FK is
available.

By the way, in response to someone else's e-mail, I don't think they are
trying to "prove" anything to us about shooting us in the foot by releasing it
in
January. That's actually a common release period, and many other DVD sets I've
bought or want were released in January. Believe me, TPTB are not trying to
prove anything, they just want to make a profit - it is a business after all.

The best way we can prove they need to release a 3rd season, is to buy the
2nd. Personally, the 1st season was my lease favorite so I'm more excited about
the 2nd season than I was the initial release <g>

I think Libs has the right take on this.

The good news is, it's coming. And after all, isn't it a little hard to
imagine Sony promoting an FK release as part of its Holiday gift line up? I
suspect it has other DVDs in the pipeline for that.

As to part III, I *really* don't think we need to worry about that coming
out. Lisa Ryder fans from Andromeda will certainly be seen as an additional
audience for the third season package.

The second season release is another opportunity for individuals to go to
Netflix and/or to Blockbuster (which is now trying to do its own
DVD-rental-by-mail thing) and ask them to carry the DVDs. People who rent
may get hooked ... <gr>

I do agree there. I was kind of hoping for another Oct release since
I am kind of tired of watching my first season. I have been going
back to my tapes for second season. I always thought the second
season had the best episodes. It was after everything was introduced
so they could go into a bit more depth with the characters and
stories and before TPTB started messing with things.

Subject: Re: Some thoughts on Lynn's question

David made some good points, things I had begun to wonder about. Aside from
the misprice, I think Sony highly overcharged for the first set. I suspect they
knew the audience was relatively small (compared to the demand for some
series), so they decided to charge a large amount, knowing they had a captive
audience. The problem with this, seems to me, is that it discourages any curious
vampire fanatic buyer from giving the set a try. Charge $30 or so, and some vampire
collector might buy it. For example, someone talked a friend into buying a
double set of vampire movies, one of which was Demon Under Glass starring one of
the stars of the Sentinel, just because he likes vampire movies. Harder to do
that when the price is set with desperate fans in mind.

I'll admit, I don't know much about the business or marketing and sales in
general, but I've seen other series released that surely have a limited fan base,
and they didn't charge an arm and a leg or seem to think making some sells was
worth less than nothing.

Portia
PS. grateful for the DVDs but confounded by Sony's lack of respect for this
audience

I think it is more likely that Sony realized there was potentially a
small market so they had to set the prices of the DVDs higher to make
a profit on the sales that they thought they could make.

I also really don't really consider FK to be overpriced.
FK is $79 from a place like amazon ($56.26 from my personal favorite
of www.deepdiscountdvd.com). Shows like Farscape run about $89 a
season from Deep Discount (quite a bit more from other vendors).
Shows like X-Files or the various StarTrek series are about $99 a
season from a place like Amazon.

$79 a season does not seem "excessive". If they were $99 a season
and still as "bare bones" as the Season 1 set is... I'd feel we were
being taken a little.

I suspect that there are a lot of variables in play with setting the
price for a DVD set. What kind of residual deals the various players
(writers, directors, series creators, actors, song authors....) have
could easily be different from series to series.
Like anything else in television - I suspect that there is
considerable pressure to make money as quickly as possible - with no
real regard for long-term profits.
I personally don't think you wouldn't sell out a run of Season 3
DVDS for Forever Knight. But, it may take a year or two to sell
them. That could be an issue if the company wants to see profits in
2-3 months....
In the end, all we can really do is continue to buy whatever we can
get and hope that the profits are enough to entice Sony into
completing the trilogy - even if it is just a bare-bones, shows-on-
DVD release only.

Yes, folks, I'm attending a mystery fans convention in Toronto, and I'd love to
go out to dinner with as many Toronto area FK fans as are not otherwise engaged
in running for their lives. :) The convention is Thursday through Sunday
afternoon, Oct. 7-10th. (Yes, I know the 11th is Thanksgiving in Canada. I don't
know why the Canadian organizers of this year's Bouchercon chose those dates.)
I'm visiting a non-FK friend on Tuesday the 5th and Wedneday the 6th, so for me
the best time would be Monday evening. I'm open to the evening of Sat. the 8th
if that's best for most people.

Will Steeves, who is taking me on the FK shooting sites tour on Monday the 4th,
has very kindly offered to organize dinner. If you'd like to be there, please
email him, goid@i........

Thanks!
