One would expect Nick to say va au diable. telling someone to go to hell
or to the devil loses something in the translation if it becames a formal
request allez au diable.

You could say LaCroix was being very careful in his early treatment of Nick.
By deliberately (and since it was LaCroix doing it it had to have
been deliberate) choosing to use the formal vous form he served
his purpose at the time in that he demonstrated to Nick that he respected
him as a person. Thus making it easier for Nick to accept his
authority over him. Fealty implies responsiblity, duty and respect on
both sides

later on when he had Nick firmly under control he didn't worry about it
so much. and of course by that time they were on familiar terms with each
other.

The main key items from all 3 seasons, but in
different locations are: the grand piano, the
motorcycle, and the painting supplies.

I always liked the giant circus posters on the walls.
And the giant TV set up.

And, of course, it goes without saying, the most
important thing is the fireplace.

I got a different impression of his expression. This is after he
demands to be returned to humanity, and Lacroix tells him that no,
he's well and truly stuck, and that he should be grateful for it.

> Like he was thinking, "OK, you made me, and you're the one

I thought Nick sounded bitter, almost threatening. "I will repay you,"
he says. He isn't grateful. He's vowing to get back at LC for turning
him into a monster. And eventually, he does---he first impales him in
that abattoir, and then runs him through with a flaming stake.
Repayment, indeed.

 Hi all.

(This OT post is with the kind permission of McLisa).

I am a Canadian resident, and have just found out that it is currently LEGAL
in Canada to discriminate against or commit hate crimes against someone
based on their sexual orientation. There is currently a bill up for
consideration to remedy this. If it is passed, it would give legal
protection regarding discrimination & hate crimes to the GLBT community.

There is an online petition in support of that bill which can be signed by
any Canadian at http://www.petitiononline.com/billc250/petition.html

I ask our Canadian members to consider this and check out the petition. I
personally feel that hate crimes and discrimination should not be allowable
under any conditions, and ask those of you who feel likewise to then sign
the petition. I hope that we can get enough voice behind this to sway the
Canadian government to remedy this disgraceful situation. This petition IS
time sensitive, and needs to be signed if you wish to sign it by the end of
May 5th, 2003.

Sincerely,
  -Micki

Subject: tu / vous

One more factor to consider in this controversy: how long does it take a
vampire to slough off old speech habits and acquire new ones? <g>
Certainly we would expect Nick and Lacroix to be more influenced by the
older conventions regarding the usage of tu and vous, but would they be???

To go even further with this.... Lacroix would have originally spoken
Latin. In latin the singular form of you is 'tu'(plural is 'vos'),
regardless of formal or familiar. So, if they hold on to old habits,
one would think that LC would use the 'tu' when he spoke french - if
he were speaking to Nick alone.

I seem to remember reading in an interview with Nigel Bennett that he used to
get into difficulties with his lines in French, which he speaks. He learned it
in school and his lessons used the formal vous. So when he had to address Nick
in French (Janette too, most likely) the line usually was supposed to be tu.
Because he understood what he was saying instead of learning it by rote, Nigel
tended to say vous instead. He reported that they usually caught him, but it
sounds like some of those vous flubs slipped through.

We're getting some really interesting takes on this -- and I think it's the
first time the topic has come up even though we had a number of French speakers
on the list when the show was new.

Subject: Lacroix bear color?

Hi-
Ok, due to a very bad week at work and emotionally (I'm having my
very own private LK - several injurys and deaths in my circle of
friends and family - not immediately close to me, but still affecting
me) I have decided to get myself a build-a-bear.
Since I already have a Nick bear, I plan to get a Lacroix bear. So,
I am wondering... should I get a black one, a white one, or just a
regular brown one (dark or light?) Any thoughts on outfits?
Please send any replies off list.
Hopefully, I will get a picture of the bears up on my website
eventually.
