Well, at least for this knightie leader, I cannot do a war until June. I
am teaching high need special ed students, and a two hour daily comute,
so there is not the time for me to war now. I know I can do it after
school gets out, but not before.

So is there any time that has been picked out for it?

Lol, for a moment I thought this was about the impending war
with Iraq and that Listmommy is reminding us not to talk
about it onlist (although I *was* scratching my head
wondering which one of my digests got lost that I never saw
any war messages on the list.) Now that I realized that it is
about a much more important war, namely the FK war, I'm
thinking, "this is interesting." McLisa, dear, would you
please clarify what caused the prompting of this message? Is
there going to be an upcoming war? Did someone ask you about
it? Was it me? (I might be suffering from amnesia and having
forgotten about it.)

Merc Mommy Mildred asked on list yesterday if there might be an FK war any time
soon. Hence my reply that I wasn't opposed to an FK war, but would need someone
else to do my usual share of organizing.

McLisa, thanking those who have written to her offlist and apologizing for
being way behind thanks to Real Life.

Being a newbie, this is the most polite and organized way to start a war! LOL
Make sure everyone schedule is good and that, for the most part, you leave
everyone the way you found them, etc.

I've never been in a list war, and I would love to try to help out. I would
have no idea what to do or how to help though. LOL Anyone what to email a poor
clueless newbie about how to go about being part of a list war? (Considering that
it seems that this war won't take place for awhile, it should be just enough
time for me to learn the rules and how to play with others (ok that was a loaded
statement... I've read the previous war posts!:->) before any war type stuff
happens)

Blame it on the Mercs... I started it.

Subject: How to FK War

For newbies:

A Forever Knight list war is like a giant role playing game. But, instead of
creating characters, you are playing yourself. Well, perhaps a really whacky,
over-done version of yourself!<g> You can't be a vampire, and can't do anything
fantastic like fly on your own power, but you can exaggerate things. Fans have
flown helicoptors in wars when they sure can't in real life, but COULD learn hour
(theoritically<g>). I've powered a laptop computer using rats running around on
an exercise wheel attached to a generator to make electricity. I really don't
curl up in a nest of Ratpackers with Johnsie's finger up my nose and my toe in
his ear...

The warmistress/master/committee will come up with a plot that McLisa or
whomever is in charge will approve. Please use the word "plot" VERY loosely.

This is about writing with and working with fellow fans, not about winning or
losing. The plot is such that there really isn't a winner or loser. No one ever
dies. The "attacks" are fun ones like setting bald, hot pink rats loose in CERK
or gluing people into cow suits or filling the Ratpack tunnels with
out-of-control fruitcake followed by an out-of-control rocket power fake moose
collapsing what remains.

The main factions usually control their character by tradition. If someone
wants Screed it a story/war post, for example, they must ask the Ratpackers
(namely, me). If they want to use Screed's Place, the same. Because people were
using the Ratpacker tunnels without permission, we collapsed those and they no
longer exist. hehehehe. The Knighties have Nick's loft as their headquarters, I
believe.

Smaller factions sometimes will team up so they have enough members to play.

Different factions handle story writing differently. I usually end up doing
most of the Ratpack writing along with Johnsie's help. Other factions have
designated writers for certain parts of stories, or allow members to go a bit
crazy with their own posts under the supervision of their faction leader(s).

It is VERY time consumer. For a week or two hundreds of posts are made to the
war list. You must be able to write a story VERY quickly to respond to attacks.

Believe it or not, someone always ends up with their feelings hurt, etc. which
is why McLisa doesn't have time to sort of supervise at this moment.

You have to have people's permission to use them in stories, and you can't use
anyone who hasn't given permission to be in stories (even the actors or real
life celebrities, etc.)

Did I leave anything out? Yes, it is a LOT of fun but when you work fulltime or
are a fulltime student, it is very difficult to participate - but usually worth
it.

Subject: FK War- filling in the new people

Ok, since I started it, I might as well explain it. Any errors or
ommissions are encouraged to be corrected by others.

I am going to assume (usually a bad thing) a basic level of knowledge
regarding FK factions (which can be covered later if need be)- that they
exist and we have something of a friendly rivalry between the groups.

Long ago in the past, before my time (My first War was War 4, the first Merc
War), something happened. (if anyone could tell me when War 1 was, I'd like
to know!) Fanfic stories developed featuring the various list members and
their factions pulling pranks on each other all over Toronto... until
someone (McLisa, was that you?) got fed up and developed the first rules for
a Forever Knight Faction War. Those rules have been modified over the years
as situations came up.

Basically, a FK War is still a group of fanfic stories featuring the various
list members (more or less as they are in real life) and their factions
pulling pranks on each other all over Toronto. If I remember correctly, the
actual War lasts 2 weeks, with time for preperations and wrap up, and it
involves a *LOT* of writing- emails within various lists and between people
to coordinate things, and the actual posts to FKFIC of War stories- of which
there can be hundreds in a day.

There is a person (or couple of people working together) who is the
WarMistress/Master. They are responsible for coming up with a plot that
calls the factions into action and prompts everyone to drop everything, call
in sick to work/school for a couple of weeks, and kiss their loved ones
goodbye, and send their story-selves to Toronto. Things like- the vamps all
turning mortal, or the minds of the major characters pulling a massive
body-hop/switch trick.

And in some ways, the people participating (and participation is voluntary)
do that in real life (drop everything, kiss the loved ones goodbye...)
because it is time consuming. My best friend has a slight aversion to FK
now because of how I dissappeared during the last one, only to talk about it
non-stop whenever she dragged me out for food and for the 2 weeks after the
War was over!

What am I missing?

man... that was way better than my description, Libby. I was going for
short and sweet, but you hit on a number of major points that I didn't.

Also, there's things you cannot do in a War. No turning people into
vampires, no killing or permanent damamge to another person, no major damage
to the various locations (unless it's something the faction owning the place
comes up with- like when the Ratpack decided to collapse their tunnel
network or when the Mercs demolished the old Merc Central the war after they
changed headquarters).

Attack is an expression of love and respect in this game... and I'm sorry
that people have gotten hurt in the past (I've seen it happen), but it is
supposed to be fun.

But if I didn't have fun with it, I wouldn't be the Merc Mommy General (who
is probably getting court-martialed by her whole faction the first few days
of the next War- hey Libs, want to be my Persecuting Attourney?), because I
practically wrote myself in as it by the end of War 9... and I still am.
hey, perhaps one day I can even be the GHP (Grand High Poohbah) of the
Mercs... But I think the current one would object... *wink*

I'm kinda new too. If you don't want to post stories for the war, but still
want to be involved, can you give someone from whatever faction you choose
permission to use your name and such in there posts? And if so, who would you
contact?

Well, since War prep usually takes months to do anyway, the summer (for us
northern hemisphere types), might be a good plan.

First, we need find someone to coordinate this, since our fearless McLisa
can't. I suggest someone who has been a WM before take on the task- if
possible. Then comes the task of actually getting the WM "applications"
into that person. So it will take a while to set up.

It has been done in the past, if I recall correctly. At some point in the
War preparations, a call will go out for permission slips. At that point,
you contact the faction leaders of the faction you wish to play with and
talk to them about it.

You can, indeed. As it gets closer to time, you'll see a call go out for
permission slips from participants. The leaders or co-leaders for each
faction handle those for their own particular group. If you give your
permission to be used as a character, you can be written in where need
demands. I hope the War won't be scheduled for the first week in August if
some brave person does step up and attempt to fill McLisa's shoes. I'll be
out of town, and I just *can't* NOT be there for my Nunkies. <BG>

We decided to do that instead of raising a stink that people were in our
territory without permission<g> We did give ample warning so no one would be caught
down there, or could come up with an escape if they wanted. It could be there's
still people down there although they are probably doughed in by out of control
fruitcake at this point<g>

The Ratpackers also once accidently dropped Merc Central into the basement,
plus we've also accidently dropped a hot tub through one floor of Merc Central.

Yes, you can participate even if you don't write or don't have time to follow
everything. Just join a faction that will write you into stories. We usually
have quite a few Ratpackers, and I just use them as needed. (Ratpackers are sort
of a sub-set of the Mercs, so we can be hired and bribed into antics by other
factions as well as managing to get into trouble ourselves. You might say if you
want it done as planned, get a Merc. If you are really curious as to what might
go wrong, hire a Ratpacker.)

> Attack is an expression of love and respect in this game...>>
That is very important to remember. Some people, especially gamers who've never
participated in FK Wars before, try to take it to seriously. That doesn't work.

We actually had one FK actor make a cameo - Greg "Screed" Kramer. As a humorous
side note, when those "stories" or "posts" were being written, the only change
he suggested was not for HIS dialogue or actions, but rather Screed's.<wRPg>

Alwayz per-se-cuting Ratpackers, ye h'are. Duz tha' mean Oi get ta perspire a
cute Attorney?

(Let's wait and see)

As for war timing, there's no way to suit everyone. Once the WM is chosen,
there'll be SOME discussion of timing, but please realize not everyone can be
pleased.
