Subject: Mystery Waltz

In Black Buddha, after Nick has tendered his
resignation, he sits in his loft at the piano, playing
a charming waltz and flashing back to being on the
Titanic in 1912. I loved that waltz, and asked a
couple of years ago on list if anybody knew what it
was. A wav file of the Ger playing the waltz was
located, but nobody could identify it, and eventually
someone asserted that Fred Molin (sp?) had written it
for the episode. Then this morning, during a History
Channel program about a south Florida mansion built
during the very late 19th century, I heard the very
same waltz. With the new influx of listmembers
spurred by FK's reappearance on the SciFi Channel, I
was hoping there would be somebody now who would
recognize it. The waltz sounds to me like it would
have been a popular tune of the time, rather than a
classical piece. I have the wav file of the waltz,
and can email it if anybody wants. If someone knows
where the wav can be found online that would be a
great help too. This is going to drive me nuts until
I find the answer. <g>

Let's see, this will be a long list, so here are just a few:
DK--Parriot, GWD, Disher, Farmer
Dance by the Light of the Moon--Farmer (I always wondered what
Stonetree's take would have been)
IWR, Only the Lonely, Games Vampires Play--Disher, GWD
Fatal Mistake--Gary Farmer
Fate Worse than Death, Human Factor--Deborah Deschenes (sp?)
Partners of the Month--Deborah Duschenes & John Kapelos :-)
Close Call--Kapelos!!
Curiouser & Curiouser--everybody!!
Father's Day, Sons of Belial--NB
Be My Valentine, Night in Question--NB, GWD, & Disher
The Code--Kapelos
Outside the Lines, Strings--Ryder
Black Buddha--Kapelos & Natsuko Ohama (but I wouldn't hold my breath!);
also, the new "crew" introduced in this episode (Ben Bass, Tracy Ryder,
Blu Mankuma, Greg Kramer,
My Boyfriend is a Vampire--Disher & Ryder & GWD

I'd also like to hear from: the lead costumer(s) for the series; script
editor Naomi Janzen, some of the ladies who were various "necks of the
week", such as Marion Blackwing, Gwyneth, Alexandra, the psychic from
Dying to Know You, Calli Timmins (Lilli from 1966); some of the actors
who did characters who are big in canon, such as Merlin, Aristotle, and
Inspector Liam Neeson; actors who portrayed guest vamps, like Francesca,
Erica, Miklos, and Felix Twist. And commentary from Sandi Ross (Grace)
and Theodora Farray (who played a waitress at the Raven in several
season 2 episodes) would be interesting too.

Any other thoughts?

I liked the waltz in Black Buddha at the time and asked JP, whose address I
used to have, if it was a song of the period. He said no, that Fred Mollin
wrote it in the style of the flashbacks.

As I said, according to James Parriott, the waltz was written in the style
of the period. Is there any chance Fred Mollin did the music for the History
Channel show and produced something that sounded very much like the same
thing? Another possibility, is that what Laurie heard is the original on
which FM based a variation for his waltz. Composers do that all the time so
it's not considered a copying problem.

That would not explain the piece's use in a documentary
about a great house of the late 19th century. They
tend to use authentic music of the times in that sort
of program.

Well, the key word here is *tend*. Remember the haunting violin theme
for Ken Burns' documentary series, _The Civil War_? "Ashokan Farewell"
was written in 1982. (www.jayandmolly.com/ashokanfaq.shtml) But now
many people assume it's an authentic Civil War tune.
