Natalie knows any and all languages a writer wants her to know
(although it seems to be accepted among fanfic writers that she
knows at least some Latin).

That owing, of course, that it's hard to be a doctor
and not know at least a _little_ latin. I'm in the
middle of a medical terminology course, and am
learning more latin than I ever wanted to!

Someone asked if Natalis spoke Spanish (in canon).

Long ago, I posed a similar question onlist, about whether or not
Natalie spoke French. The consenus seemed to be that most
Canadians from Ontario would know at least a little French
That's due to the nearness of Quebec and the fact that so many
things (signs and products) have dual labels in both English
and French, although that doesn't mean she'd necessarily be
fluent in French.

That's similar to the fact that most USA citizens know at least
a few words of Spanish. Either we've had a year of it in Junior
High, or from all the dual labelling, Mexican restaurants, etc.

I don't remember seeing anything in canon that hinted that Natalie
speaks Spanish. So I'd guess that being a Canadian rather than
a USA resident, she probably doesn't.

It's a bit unusual for Canadians to speak Spanish, at least compared to
French. BUT lots of us take winter holidays in Spanish-speaking
countries; when I started learning Spanish last winter, the first thing
people said was "Oh, do you go to Mexico for the winter?"

On the other hand, everyone picks up a few words of "cereal-box French".

Hi Everybody!

There are quite a few immigrants from Spanish speaking countries here in the
Greater Toronto Area now. A former neighbour is from Argentina and taught
Spanish at night school. With Free Trade, there is also the 3 languages on
the cereal boxes and instructions for the vcr.

Take care and bye for now.
Anne.
