I can't recall if anyone's asked or answered this question, but is Claire
any relation to the musical family out of Nova Scotia?

Subject: LCA5, a partial (in both senses) report
Julia Brooks asked on forkni-l:
> (BTW - for anyone who went to LCA - report
> please !!!! - how much did Nigel's can go for this year?)
Since I haven't seen any reports, and since I usually do post about LCA, I
shall attempt to do so.
The good reason that my report will be "partial" is that I thoroughly approve
of and admire the impulse and efforts of everyone involved in LCA, and I also
love the opportunity it gives me to see people I really like whom I never see
otherwise. LCA is like being able to chose the people who you want to be with
for an annual high-school reunion.
The bad reason that my report will be "partial" is, well, I had beer in the
bar on Friday night, and then I drank too much at the Saturday night party,
so my memories are pretty blurry.
I hope clearer heads than mine will jump in with corrections.
IMO, LCA5 was smaller, quieter, and more about community than previous
editions. I think there were about half the number of attendees, and the
amount raised was, I *think*, slightly more than half that of last year.
Attendees came from Europe, and one young woman came from Buenos Aires, for
the second year in a row!
I got the impression that the Canadian economy hasn't been as throttled as
the US economy recently, so there may have been some surprise that there were
attendees, including me, who came up even though they were unemployed and
couldn't really afford to bid on anything.
But the LCA stalwarts (you know who you are, first row house right/stage left
<g>) bid for things for friends who couldn't afford items, and would start
and keep bids going to push prices up for the eventual winner.
On Friday night, there was a showing of blooper reels and wrap reels, most of
which had been shown last year. The new one I remember was for ... er ... a
show that shot in Australia, where the production team called itself
"Mexicans with mobiles" and shot scenes of themselves on their "mobiles",
talking to the suits back in North America, in sepia-and-white
Pekinpah-style, with (digital) "film scratches" added for verismo. And Jon
Cassar sent a reel for "Monk," which was funny to watch as the tightly wound
Tony Shaloub cracked up.
We did notice during the screening that there was a serious disturbance in
the force: the Nikita/Mutant X folk were sitting on the right side of the
room, and the FKers were on the left side. Unheard of!
On Saturday the rift in the LCA space-time continuum had been healed, and we
went to our correct sides <g>.
The charities this year were OVERT, the Ontario volunteer emergency rescue
team: their dogs were cute. The US charity was Angel Flight, which arranges
air travel for the families of hospice patients, to bring families to spend
the last days of their loved ones together.
Great impresario that she is, Jayne decided that a gimmick was needed to
spice up the bidding impulses of the crowd, so she created a "Survivor"-style
challenge: each side of the room would become either "Jayne's team" or
"Nigel's team." Whichever team bid the highest total amount over the two days
(excluding Coke cans) would win, and the loser would pay a forfeit, which, if
I remember correctly, wasn't initially decided upon, although it eventually
became ... a cream pie in the face.
Jayne, great thinker that she also is <g>, decided that "Jayne's team" would
be the right side of the room (us lunatics), and Nigel's would be the
Nikita/Mutant X side of the room. You do see where this is leading, don't you?
The representatives of the charities watched the bidding and horseplay and
did wonder about our collective sanity, but soon they got into the spirit of
the fun, even auctioning off Coke cans themselves.
As to the question of Nigel's can, I *think* it went for Canadian $2,000, and
I believe that he sat on it, claiming, rather unconvincingly, that butt
prints are as unique as fingerprints.
Kathryn Long is dancing in a ballet company in Vancouver and working in a
restaurant to make ends meet. Her mom brought both of Kathryn's younger
brothers, who look alarming like her, and who also dance. They were quite
impressive. Kathryn's Coke can was another masterpiece: it was a ballerina (I
think?), with the Coke can in a toe shoe that was cleverly decorated.
What have I forgotten, guys? Come on, help me out here.
Maybe others will fill in the blanks.
Best,
Julia K.

Subject: Nick's gun
Of interest to note.
In Night in Question Nick was in violation of Canadian law when it
showed him keeping his gun in a desk drawer. I believe Canadian law state
that Guns must have trigger locks on them when they are not in use,
and be securely locked up in gun safe which is bolted to a wall.
Ammunition is supposed to stored in a different location from the
guns and I believe also must be kept under lock and key.
In Partners in Crime. The murder aside If the gun was hers as she said ,
the wife would probably have faced charges of improper storage of a fire
arm, in this case a revolver which is a restricted weapon. I am
assuming she could prove she and or her husband had permission to own
a revolver in the first place. If not more charges would be laid. A
standard fire arms Acquistion form would not be enough.
A Firearms acquistion form is required before you can legally purchase a
gun or even inherit one. .They last for several years then the person
has to reapply. Besides the standard background check of the applicant,
the applicant's wife or husband has to agree before he or she is allowed
to have a Firearms Acquistion form. . For example A friend of mine was
questioned by the police , to make sure she was all right with the idea
of her husband buying a gun, in this case a shotgun for hunting,
and I think if I remember correctly, a fellow worker her husband used as a
reference on the form , was also questioned about his state of mind.

The law changed has substantially, in 1995 I believe, but most
everything Debbie wrote still applies. Now the Possession & Acquisition
Licence (PAL) is required, and the penalties for unsafe storage (of
which many examples were been given) are significantly increased.
