Next Monday, the 16th of Sept, will be a rerun of the CSI episode with John
Kapelos on it. He's not in the whole ep, but it's different from Schanke.
(CBS is the network, 10pm EST, but doublecheck with the TV Guide.)

I thought it funny that everyone pictured Nick to be Cristian (sp?)
But seeing Schanke as a vampire was hilarious.

Er...Nick fought in the Crusades. He was Catholic. That has always been a
part of his character according to FK canon. Or have I been watching a
completely different show all this time?

I believe she was referring to the character's name, Christian, not his
belief system.

The episode in question was "Stranger Than Fiction." (My personal favorite
because of the Schanke as a master vampire scene. <G>) It's the one with
the writer, Emily Weiss (?), who comes to close to actually describing the
Community. Christian was the name of the character in the book with whom
Nick identified and dreamed himself to be.

I think she meant everyone pictured him to be "Christian the vampire" in that
particular episode, not pictured him to be "Christian" as in the Faith.

By the way, I think he was Catholic.

Weren't all of them Catholic back then? This was *before* the
Protestant Reformation, people.

I'm well aware of that, and I'm sure most fans on this list are. I just typed
out "Catholic" instead of Christian in my response ;-) But I am curious - wasn't
there at least one other major break-away (... Eastern Orthodox or something
along that line). Would this be before or after Nick's human life-time? I was
raised Protestant so know more about that history, than the earlier history of
the church. Remember to keep it on topic, I'm curious and it might make good fan
fic information.

It's called "Crossjurisdictions". And the character is *very*
different.

Nope. The Orthodox Church was there before the Catholic church broke
off from them. They were centered around Greece and what is now
Turkey, but they were spread out all over the known world.

Okay, that's a good point. I don't think, however, that too many
of them were involved in the crusades.

With Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement) coming up, I need to
receive forgiveness from those I have wronged in the past year.
Therefore, if I have said anything at all to offend anyone on
this list, I apologize. No offense was ever intended by anything
I wrote.

Actually, there were two churches existing
simultaneously, both claiming direct succession from the
Apostles--the Byzantine church, centered in
Constantinople (Byzantium) and the Roman Catholic
church, centered in Rome. I believe they eventually
became truly distinct entities over disputes over what
was considered heretical. The Orthodox Pope is the
Bishop of Constantinople, and the Roman Catholic Pope is
the Bishop of Rome. They split sometime between 300 an
500, I think. The two churches share many of the same
teachings and customs, although the Eastern church is
distinguished by its veneration of icons.

The Orthodox church is predominant in Eastern
Europe/Greece, while the Roman church is predominant in
Western Europe.

And let's not forget the Coptic Christians, who are
centered in Egypt. This is also a very ancient church.

And FWIW, Catholics are Christians, just as Protestants,
Lutherans, and Methodists are. We're a *flavor* of
Christian. <g>

For some good historical information see
https://members.tripod.com/stromata/id220.htm

The Byzantine Empire (and the Byzantine Church) asked
the Roman church for help in staving off invading
Muslims. Contantinople was besieged and eventually lost.

Something that many people forget is that the Muslims
*won* the Crusades, which were started in large part as
a response to the Muslim invasion of western Europe
(they reached the gates of Vienna, and well into Spain).

In light of recent history, this page is doubly
interesting.
