When Schanke and LaCroix shook hands it looked as if Schanke sensed
something about LaCroix, but I think Schanke pushed the idea to the back
of his mind. It was there if he ever needed to know . Other than that he
preferred to believe Nick wasn't a vampire.

I always felt they missed out on a scene in the haunted house. Nick should
have met Schanke and either told him the truth about himself or explain
why he hadn't trusted him with the truth.

I think he secretly likes Casablanca---but he always roots for the Nazis. <g>

Nick: The Great Escape and Stalag 17 -- just because they're about people trying
to get away from their captors <g>
Janette: Fred Astaire movies, because he's just so stylish ("La, Nicolas, what a
vampire he would have made! Such style and grace! What a shame I don't know when
to stop, or I would have made him mine!") <g>
Vachon: Three Stooges movies. Just because he's a guy, and that's guy humor.

Yeah i know he's married but that hasn't stopped the Schanke/LaCroix fiction
:) I could see a one time thing between them, but nothing really beyond
that *shrugs*
Too bad we didn't see LaCroix come to the loft when Schanke was there, that
would have been so funny!!

Er...correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Schanke married to Myra with a daughter?
He'd be cheating on his wife, and I don't think that's in character for Schanke.

I think he would take the revelation well. There are quite a few fics dealing
with him finding out.

"There are truths we dare not look in the eye, for fear they will look back." I
think if Schanke were directly confronted by the truth, he would be able to
handle it, but meanwhile, he decided that he really didn't want/need to know.
It may be that he realized that if Nick was trying so hard to keep him from
finding out, he owed his partner enought not to dig any more.

I've always felt that the Schanke of the first half of season 1 would have
(and probably did) cheat on his wife - among other less than upstanding
things. In DbtLotM, he seems more than ready to spend some time in the
strip joint. As the show progressed I think Schanke turned more into the
kind of guy of talked a good game, but really wouldn't have done most of
what his imagination thought up.

I think Schanke would be able to accept Nick as a
vampire, if not right away, then eventually. In 'Feeding
the Beast', although Schanke at first balks when Nick
says "What if I told you I was an addict' (or words to
that effect) it doesn't take him long to change his mind
and tell Nick that he's his partner, he'll take him any way
he can get him. Based on that, I think Schanke would
have stood by Nick knowing he was a vampire, kept
his secret, and if it got out somehow, probably have
defended him against all comers.

Hence, J.D. Valdez (did I get that right?) stands for Javier Dionysius, rather

Honestly, I could see him sitting and watching the History channel, sipping
an amusing red and chuckling at the inaccuracies. Secretly, I suspect that
Lacroix has an enormous written history that he keeps close by and labors on
in the quiet reaches of the day, while his kind normally sleeps. I imagine
that his version is a bit different from the usual kind but has all the
riveting excitment of a mainstream novel. Just my opinion... An image I like

He didn't like to be photographed because that was
evidence of the existence of vampires (the photos showed
him flying, and draining a soldier). Let's not get into
the problem that no camera in existence at that time
could capture something moving as fast as a flying
vampire---unless, of course, LC courteously hovered in
place for several minutes in a well-lit area <g>.

He was photographsed with Nick and Janette in Victorian
times---there was the photo that Schanke found. And, of
course, there's his Nightcrawler publicity photo.

I think that "de Brabant" is a more prestigious title
than something more specific (he's of a big, important
duchy, in comparison to John the Dim, Henri the
Longlegged, or Giles of Littlehouseontheprairie). Long
ago I think some list member posted that an appellation
like "de Brabant" was reserved for the ruling family's
use.

I like to think he also was known as Nicolas the Fair
(blond and gorgeous, you know <g>).

Subject: Fleur's book

Someone asked about Fleur reading.

Yes, it's perfect plausible that she would have known how to read. However,
it is unlikely that she--or Nick, for that matter--knew how to write very
well, if at all. We think of Reading and Writing as two sides of the same
coin, but they were completely different skills then. Professional scribes
provided such services, so there was no reason to learn how to wield a pen.

This is still a time when women had significant responsibilities and power.
A wife would, for example, be left completely in charge of her husband's
estates if he went off to the crusades or away on other business. She might
even be responsible for overseeing the defence of the castle. And her
inheritance rights were significant. In addition to her dowry, Nick's mother
probably received 1/3 of her husband's estate at his death. At a lower level
in society, if a man died and his wife were capable of continuing his craft
or trade, she could do so.

Generally speaking, women's power, privileges and status in law actually
diminished as the Middle Ages "progressed". For example, laws were
eventually passed that eliminated women from certain businesses (at which
they were succeeding too well). Ironically, prosperity hasn't always been
the best thing for women's rights. There's a 20th century parallel in what
happened after World War II--women who were welcomed in factories and on
construction sites during the war were summarily sent home, and the same
kind of promotion that pushed the image of Rosie the Riveter was turned to
setting the Betty Crocker-style homemaker up as the ideal.

The lot of younger children also got worse as time went on. Primogeniture
(simplistically, first-born son gets everything) was not uniform practice at
the beginning of the Middle Ages, but became increasingly widespread as the
disadvantages of dividing property up among several heirs became apparent.
Even so, a prosperous parent could bestow property not otherwise encumbered
on a younger child. One of the more dramatic examples of this is the way
England's Queen Eleanor used the Aquitaine (territory in what is now France)
as a political tool. Its disposition was in her control, not Henry II's, and
she could give it to the son of her choice outright.

I found him in the Catholic Saints Online website. The day is Oct. 9th. He is
also known as St. Denis, and was a bishop of Paris who was martyred in
(probably) 258 A.D. He is the patron saint of France.

Thanks for mentioning the part about being invoked for headaches, as it made
the identification certain. There are several others saints named Dionysius.

Yep, I can see that one, too. Plus, Ger wears a beard well, and still
looks well-groomed, unlike some men. {You know the guys I mean: they
grow six whiskers and suddenly you hear the theme of "Deliverance"
in the background until they start shaving again.}

Almost every time I watch something good now, I find myself thinking,
"Oh, Ger could've done this role SO much better."

I know he wants to direct, and he does it well, but we don't get to
SEE him when he directs, darn it. Hey, instead of just a "making-of"
video of the next thing he directs, they could do a "Ger directs" video,
and film him directing/making the project. I'd sure buy it! Hmmm ...
maybe a future fundraising idea? {Or, we could go back to the original
idea of filming Ger sitting in a chair, reading a book aloud - even the
telephone book - for a fundraising tape.} I'm sounding desperate, huh?

Hey, where'd my topic go? Where am I? Dang!

How about Ger as Spiderman? No, wait, he doesn't like heights. Could

I see Ger as Arthur in a remake/restaging of "Camelot."
The part was created by a Welshman with a beautiful speaking voice who
wasn't a professional singer--Richard Burton.
And Ger would do a great job with the range of the part, from the chap who
has run away from his wedding in the first scene to the valiant and doomed

Sorry, but I don't think he could pull it off. Spider-man is supposed to be in
his early 20's in the comic book (the current adaptation, anyway) & late teens in
the movieverse. Now, Get could feasibly do an older Spider-Man if they ever did
a movie or TV rversion of the SpiderGirl comics, which feature Peter's daughter
May as the main character and a younger generation of super heroes.

As for MIB, I can see Ger wearing sunglasses and a black suit. He'd look cool.

I'm of the opinion that LaCroix was the original MIB.

<snicker> Lacroix is an avid Mystery Science Theatre
3000 buff---he adds his comments to the ones made by
Mike and the bots. He especially likes the Gamera
movies, but his very favorite is "Prince of Space."

He also has in-depth discussions with Aristotle over the
relative virtues of Joel vs. Mike, and who is more evil,
Pearl Forrester or Doctor Forrester.
