(Posted with McLisa's kind permission)
Hi all. I belong to a great group called DC Webwomen, for women in the
Washington DC metro area who work in various aspects of the online information
technology industry (it has a business 'help-me-code-this' side and a
networking/fun side). I have permission to invite listmembers to an informal
get-together about Fanfiction in DC this coming Wednesday (details below). It's
free, and all the sponsor asks is that people who intend to come register by the
means provided in advance so she will know how many to expect. I might not be
able to attend because of rehearsals, but if I do I'll look for fellow FK
fans--you're the best!

Cheers,

Fan Fiction? Crossover? Alternate Universe? Beta-readers? PTP? OT? Fanzine?
OC? Angst? Mary Sue?

Have a clue what I'm talking about?

Then you know what fan fiction is. Maybe you're a writer yourself.

Fan fiction is when people who like a certain show, book, movie, (whatever)
use those characters, settings, elements (etc.) as a springboard from which
to write stories, parodies, pass-the-pens. You might have seen it at cons
(conventions like Star Trek). In the past (Dark Ages), these were the
productions of ditto machines.

Now the Internet has caused fan fiction to explode: websites, email groups,
face-to-face conferences.

Even if you don't write fan fiction yourself (aka you're a lurker), come to
Teaism on June 12, 2002, get something to eat from their fabulous menu, and
join Karen and Katherine downstairs, to talk about all things fan fic:

* fan fiction defined
* its evolution
* the problem of crossovers
* how the Internet facilitates it
* the fanfic, email, and community
* etc.

I especially like the fact that in the present-day QOH story line, Nick's
hair can't decide whether to be falling down over his forehead (a la the
flashback), or combed back.

Take a close look at the scene where Nick and Schanke are "grilling" Johanna
at the Precinct. Observe Nick's nice, curly, falling-over-the-forehead hair.
Now freeze-frame the very next scene in which Nick and Schanke walk out of
the interrogation room and Schanke says, "You're going to say she didn't do
it!" Observe Nick's hair again. Was there a hairdresser we couldn't see
hiding in there somewhere???? Or is Nick just *real* quick with his comb?

You should also note that Colm Feore is currently appearing live at the
Stratford Festival of Canada, playing Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady. The
play opened officially last Tuesday to rave reviews. He will be replaced
in that role by Geraint Wyn Davies on July 14. Dates and times of

Fascinating. It almost makes me wish I had seen the plot as it was
originally invisioned or at the least read the original draft version. I
never noticed the presence of GWD brother. I'll have to watch my tape
again.

All quibbles aside this episode has always been one of my favourites. the
only problem I ever had with it was wondering why after the dealer was
killed no one thought to mention to the police that Nick's interest in the
harp and the fact that he had been bidding on it in ernest. I know
Schanke thought Nick's bid was a misunderstanding but when the harp
went missing you would think the police would have asked questions about
the bidding at the auction. Since Nick was the one who first upped
the bid surely someone would have mentioned this fact to the police.

I think the reason Nick didn't react to the dealers death was that he was so
wrapped up in his memories of the past that he couldn't really react to
the dealer's murder.

Which brings me to the next question. When do you suppose Nick learned
Lord Delabarre had been the one responsible for killing Gwyenth?
Could Nick the vampire be responsible for the original Lord Delabarre's
dying at age 55?

Interesting concept, but aside from the fact aht Nick would still have been
a very, very young vampire...
Imagine him trying to persuade Janette, much less LaCroix to take a trip to
Wales...<gr>

Yes, but what if Delabarre *happened* to be in France, and Nick *happened*
to run into him one night... fair enough, that's quite a string of
coincidences, but still, I smell a fanfic. :)

Was it ever mentioned in FOREVER KNIGHT canon that
vampires have perfect memories (total
recall/photographic memory)? I've read a lot of fan
fic using this concept. Are the authors getting it
from general vampire lore or are they assuming the
flashbacks in the series mean vampires have total
recall? I seem to remember a few episodes where Nick
couldn't remember things clearly (and I don't mean
"Night in Question", I'm not counting that episode).
Of course, not having a perfect memory myself, I can't
say what episodes they were. Any ideas?

Nope, it's another one of those fun fanfic concepts.

One piece of canon that argues against it is the fact that the knowledge and
memories from drinking someone's blood fade away. (Nick tells Francesca "it
will be gone in two hours!" when she talks about the knowledge he will get
from the musician's blood.)

However, some really fantastic fiction has been written that uses the idea
that the vampire records every moment with crystal clarity, including
Dorothy Elggren's "Somehow" (sequel to the equally wonderful "Somewhere")
which you can find on www.fkfanfic.com.

Speaking of memory, with all that extra time on their hands, I wonder if any
of the FK vamps have spent much time memorizing poetry, trivia, statistics
or what have you....

For starters, I think Nick knows all of John Donne's poems by heart....

You would think....<g>. Assuming they did, obviously Nick would be using
another name to bid on it, and all anyone would be able to give the police
was a physical description. Since it was daylight, Nick wasn't on the scene,
so there wouldn't be anyone to say, "hey, that's the bidder!"

Why I like the concept, I don't find any reason to go for it. There's no
reason Nick would have ever known that Lord Delabarre was Gwyneth's killer,
although current events would likely have him come to that conclusion now.
Delabarre as the killer is disclosed to us as the viewers, but not as the
result of one of Nick's flashbacks. He was long gone from Wales before
Delabarre would have taken over the land and there's nothing in series canon
to indicate that Nick was ever in the area again.

I'd say it was more canon that the vamps *don't* have perfect memory. Cuz one
of the comments Nick makes in Fallen Idol is that Fleur *didn't* want to become
one. (Or something to the effect, can't remember <G> the exact words.) WHich is
not what we saw happen, nor what LC says happens.

It could be that the flashbacks we see are events significant enough that the
vamps would have remembered them anyway regardless. Or they might not have
remembered them until current events trigger the FB. Or Nick, Janette and LC
could have naturally excellent memories and/or learned memory-strengthening
techniques over the centuries. Or some combination of the three.

Hmmm, fun fanfic idea. Dueling flashbacks. {hums theme to a certain banjo piece}
