Subject: Sci-fi's Broadcast- Lines

Hi,

I noticed in another recording I made today ("Dying to Know You") that there
were some diagonal lines going through it for a few minutes, close to before
a commercial break (then they went away). "Fever" had these as well,
briefly. Was it just my satellite feed or is something strange going on with
Sci-fi's broadcast?? It doesn't make sense to me that it would be my dish,
since this hasn't occurred before. I normally see a clear picture, no lines.
Anyone else notice this?

I found the above by accident, and I didn't see FK on their list. This got me
to thinking.
How can we get FK DVD Season 1, 2, and 3 on this list? And if we did get FK on
this list, would that make it any more likely to be put on DVD? I think that
if it were on the list we might have a better chance.

What do the folks here think?

Yes, they do..This gets slightly off FK, but hopefully you will all see the
relevaence to FK in it...

Talking in the past with JMS of Babylon 5, from before he had the show (we
were in a small elite e mail group on GEnie many years ago when it was known
as THAT WHICH CANNOT BE NAMED) to all the time the show was in production
and he was a bit more rounded on the web, he explained how a lot of this TV
stuff works, about all the executive problems, about the control veiwing
groups/... I know we still have all these neat messages archived SOMEWHERE
on our evil computers!

Basically they want all shows to conform and be of interest to Joe Plumber
in Albequerque and Suzy Welfare girl... Why they are marketing to non income
groups (well not Joe plumber as they do good but why Suzy welfare??) I
havent figured out yet.

Sci fi throws them for loops. The average watcher tends to be more
affluent, more intelligent, and more demanding for thought, and more
marketable...
But they cant break their mold.. and they foster this with Neilsons (who
only poll 5-6000 people a year) and the focus groups, rather then realistic
means of tracking who is actually watching the show.

In one of Babylon 5's test groups (called focus groups) to see how people
"liked" the show, JMS said he almost leapt through the glass when a middle
aged guy said in the interview that THIS wasnt real science fiction... Power
Rangers was real science fiction...

I have so many stories about the literal STUPIDITY of many TV exucatives its
not funny.

But lets say if even HALF of the JMS stories about getting Babylong 5 to TV
is true, Im surprised FK made it at all the way it was, and Im not surprised
we ended up with season three and the rush to get rid of thought.

Heck, just this past year with Andromdea, Kevin Sorbo who took over the
show, stated that he wanted to make the show "more Accesible to viewers",
and when questioned he felt that the scripts were too complicated and that
people couldnt handle arcs (which he got rid of from the story), or
characters that required in depth secrets or personas...And basically said
that people needed show reset buttons, that they werent smart enough to
remember form one week to the next...

This seems to be a general consensus unfortuantley....and shows up clearly
not only in Forever Knight and the hubdoo about that, and other shows of the
Sci Fi venue. Many shows that have depth are few and far between and have
taken a lot of fighting to get on.

We are NOT stupid. We like to think. We CAN remember things from day to
day. We arent all teen aged hormoned boys who needs T&A to be able to
watcha show (although the thought of Nick..... Family list remember family
list...)
We want real advertisers not adult phone lists and Madame Cleo. We arent
moronic geeks who live in their parents cellars, living on compuadult sites,
and only come out to eat bologna wearing our Mr. Spock ears (apologies to
any fans here who do...)

End of rant...

<<I guess the real question is,
did USA think FK, in its unique, complex and curiously
inventive format was too much for its audience? Did they
think the viewer's brains would shut down if they gave
them a thicker, more involving plot and characters that
were different from the rest of the shows?>>

It wouldn't surprise me a bit. Any number of shows have suffered the same
fate for much the same reason. "Star Trek" was considered by studio execs
to be "too cerebral," and, as we can see from the discussions that go on
around here, FK is certainly thought provoking material.

I believe another part of the problem is that, not only execs, but a large
portion of people involved in the entertainment industry seem to simply
refuse to take any show/film involving science fiction, horror or fantasy
seriously. How many TV shows or movies of that genre do you see winning
awards for anything other than special effects or makeup? As far as I know
(and I'm sure someone out there will correct me if I'm wrong <G>), the only
award won for FK was Mr. Bennett's Gemini for his portrayal of LaCroix.
Guess that goes to show that the Canadian entertainment community is either
more tolerant of the genre or just plain has better taste than their
American counterpart. <G>

Of course, WE can argue that FK wasn't simply a "vampire show," but drama.
Unfortunately, it had that taste of the supernatural which made it one of
the bastard children of TV-Land...tolerated as long as the ratings were up
and the advertisers bought airtime, but dumped the second either showed a
sign of flagging. Said dumping probably involved a great rolling of eyes
and heaving of sighs amongst the execs who, having killed the show with
their own lack of insight, said, "See, I told you a series about a vampire
cop would never cut it out there. People want REAL stuff--like sitcoms!"

Hmmm...I guess I'm in the minority here, but I
have problems sending messages to the fic list.
From time to time, the PSU server inserts extra
returns into my text, sometimes driving me over
the 300 lines per part limit and giving me the
dreaded error message/bounced post. Even when I
have reformatted my messages, this still happens.
Maybe it's just me, but the server seems really
finicky....

Don't get me wrong. I think Don's going a great
job keeping the proverbial garden in order. I
just wish that the server wouldn't try to
reformat my messages. <sigh>

And, on the Yahoo Groups thing, you can turn that
stuff off. They don't advertise it very well,
but you can do so. If there's a (re: free) place
to host my two groups other than Yahoo, I would
like to know about it. (Offlist please...) I like
using Yahoo personally, but that's my opinion
which in combination with about $5 will buy you a
cup of coffee. :)

Oh well, that's all for now. Back to writing my
next piece....

Thanks for listening.

Sincerely,

David

It's a nice idea but try to remember the increase amount of work and burden
it puts on the people who are running the auction. They put in a lot of

One of my favorite shows, other than FK, is Everybody Loves Raymond. It's

I just watched my Canadian version of this ep (I really enjoyed it, even the
cheesy flying scene!) and yes, it *is* Nick Gray! A little thinner, a lot less
gray than the Nick Gray I've met at LCA, but yep, it's him.

In the credits he's listed as a stunt man. You'll notice he didn't have any
lines, and he got tackled by Flying Nick at the end.

Subject: How I found FK

I first saw Forever Knight as Nick Knight. I'm a Rick Springfield fan. After
watching the movie I thought it would make a good series and was a little
disappointed when nothing showed up. Then at some point I was flipping
channels and stumbled across the second half of a first seaon episode. Not
sure which one it was. I didn't always remember to watch it, and often when I
did it was halfway through and I kicked myself for missing the first half.
It took me until the third run of Dark Knight to get it on tape. After a
while I remembered to watch it from the start.

I loved it because it had real characters with real lives, problems etc. And
they looked like real people. The stories were good to, as was the acting. I
was drawn to Nick and Natalie from the start because of the chemistry between
them. It's what kept me watching again and again. It wasn't until Schanke
mellowed a little that I really began to like him too.

it was later I learned that it was done on a shoestring budget. I think they
did two eps for every X-Files ep budget. And their third season budget was
even smaller than it was first season.

I wasn't online yet so I didn't know about all of this stuff. I was part of
the first bring back the Knight letter writing campaign back at the end of
first season. I was thrilled to see it back, and even got it at a civilized
time. I helped with the next campaign to save the show. And I think I
helped with the one for third season, having no idea what they'd do to the
show. When third season started, I was perfectly willing to give it a fair
shot, even if I was a little annoyed over the trying to get rid of CD because
"she's too old", which has to be one of the stupidest things I've ever heard.
I was willing to watch the new season and see what they had to offer. I
liked Vachon, but never really got that interested in the other characters.
They were too much like all the other characters on tv, and were lacking that
special FK spark.

After Tracy killed her first perp, I started liking her a little better. She
started developing a little more. The locker room scene after she killed that
time was one of my favorite Tracy scenes, the others are Natalie telling her
to take another hit of the oxygen because it seems to be helping (Jane Doe)
and Vachon asking if she needs him to draw her a picture (organ theft ring)
(Let No Man Tear Asunder).

When I first onliine there weren't so many lists or so many factions. I found
the FK message board and the MacGyver message board first. Back then AOL
charged per hour. I found the monthly FK chat, which I attended when I
remembered, or was around then. My very first list was FKFIC as the sheer
volume of Forkni was a little scary. I joined FKFIC and was loving the
stories I read, and then learned it was the middle of War 4. It was a riot.
Everyone had such great imaginations and sense of fun (and playful mischief).
I asked someone what was happening offlist and they told me. I joined in and
had a blast. I was a member of the NNPack back when it was a hand done list.

I remember when the only factions were one per character and the Die Hards
for those that couldn't or wouldn't chose one faction. I guess this makes me
one of the list Elders.

I think that's enough rambling for one post.

Subject: Re: How I found FK

I came to FK by sheer serendipity. I caught "Nick Knight" while flipping
through the channels one evening. I also caught "DK" while channel surfing
late, late one night during a summer break from college. Both were caught
mid-show. I can't remember what made me stop flipping that second time (first
time -- "hey, that's the guy from the videos!" "g"). Maybe it was that Ger was
so cute, or the morgue scene looked interesting, or that guy with the sideburns
looked familiar.... "g" Anyway, the more I watched, the stronger became my sense
of "deja vu," until I realized I actually *had* seen that pilot before! "Hey,
this is kinda neat! And how cool to have a blond vampire! And I like that
Schanke guy, and look at the chick's cool hair, and how neat that *she* is the
doctor! And what a CAR!" LOL! I immediately liked the show, and I guess my
stubborn streak was lit by the sheer cussedness I had to display to find the
blasted show. Seemed like it was constantly changing channels and airtimes --
all of them at obscure times (3am??? gimme a break! I DON'T have a VCR!).
Needless to say, it wasn't until Sci Fi started showing the eps that I saw them
consecutively. I am proud to say that there where only a few of them that I
hadn't seen by that time! <smugness> LOL! There are still a few that I have
only seen 2 or so times; "Last Act" for instance.

Portia, so excited to have the show on again, and amazed at herself for the
welling of nostalgia she feels evertime she sees the sun set over Toronto (which
I've never visited!) in the opening credits!

Anyone have any idea who the first one to use "Carpe
Noctem" was?

Was is FK, or another vampire-related group?

I'm *do* know that FK is the origin of "I am what I
am, and I don't think Betty Ford takes vampires!"
(and of course, the famous Welsh translation:
"Rydw i'n pa beth rydw i'n, a dydw i'n credu mae'r
Betty Ford yn derbyn sungwyr gwaed.")

But this is HIGHLY against copyright laws and is *illegal* The Powers That Be
have been very nice about letting us supply each other with tapes for just the
cost of tape and posting, but what is on eBay is *illegal* and against the law.

If things like that are allowed to continue, they could crack down on all
exchanging of tapes, unfortunately.

So please do NOT bid on them! There's plenty of fans willing to supply tapes for
just the cost of tape and postage.

Public Service Announcement over ;-)

I'm watching this now and just notice something I'd never
head before: in one the flashbacks, LaCroix calls him
"Nick", when talking *to* him, not about him, as in the
scene with Schanke in "Close Call". A truly rare
occurance.

Generally speaking, I don't like this episode, probably
for the same reasons it's likely a very good episode:
Nick's lie. I'm sure it's very important, and I wonder
whether it was the corner-cutting vampire in him, or
the fallible human in him, but I don't like the episode.
I realize this is a purely emotional reaction on my
part. <g>
