Subject: Re: Memories of the Knight

I never got to see the first run of the show because we didn't have cable
(my mom thought TV was a waste of time) and even if we did, I wouldn't have
been able to see it because my mom also tends to freak out at my interest in
dark fantasy.
Anyway, in collage, I was messing around on the internet and decided to see
what was on scifi.com. On the main page there was an ad for FK, and I
thought, "a vampire cop? Cool." So I noted the time, grabbed some
snackies, and plopped down in front of the TV that night. (It was a third
season episode, the one with the singer named Cristi Black) By the end of
the show, the snackies were still untouched, and I was completely addicted.
I started calling my sister every night to tell her about the episode that
had just aired, and she (without cable) begged me to record some and send
them to her, so I did. I still remember the first time I saw 'Ashes to
Ashes'. At the end, I burst into tears, ran to the phone and called Rose.
"They killed Vachon!!!" I nearly threw the TV out after Dark Knight, until
they announced that the series would be starting over the next Monday.
I searched the internet for more and found the fkfanfic archive. One of the
stories mentioned a list, so I wrote to the author and she gave me
instructions to get on, and here I am!
So I got Rose addicted, and she showed the tapes to Chris (the third of us),
who was promptly addicted as well. Then I met my best friend and she was
the next victim, and has passed it along to her new husband. So that's five
of us out of one whim to see what scifi.com was all about! Talk about your
chain reaction.
(My sister Crystle is next, as soon as she's old enough not to rat to mom.)

much first time around. I'm sure I was blinded by the blond.....still am <G>.

For Brian and anyone else who is interested in remembering the Visions
convention or seeing something of it for the first time, I have a section
about it on my website. I don't believe I met Brian there and of course
don't have the exact same memories. It's even possible that Nigel may have
been there more than one year and I've got the wrong year (but have a look
anyway! <g>). The pics on my site are from the last year Visions was held.
It's a shame they had to end it, because it was a very nice con. Although
there are numerous hotels all attached to each other via skywalks on the
site, the hotel the con was actually at was the Hyatt Regency O'Hare.
Besides the fond memories of fun with many friends at the hotel, I also
have...um...not-so-fond memories of the airplanes that constantly pass just
outside the hotel windows at all hours of the night, making sleep a total
impossibility. :-) Anyway, my site is at:

and then follow the "Revisiting FK Events of the Past" link, then the Visions
link.

Enjoy!

My sis, Megan, got addicted to it first, and since we went to colleges in
different states, we would talk every weekend. She told me all about this
great show she just stumbled across. I could never get all the characters
straight, in fact, right after 'Ashes to Ashes', she called me up and cried
"THEY KILLED VACHON!" My 'intellegent' response was, "Was that Nick's

so I went to visit her at *her* school, and she showed me some tapes she had

I'm one of the lucky ones who was hooked on the show from Day One. Although
I've never been a rabid fan of vampires in general, I still find myself
attracted to the dark side now and again. So, when I saw the advertisements
for the original movie, Nick Knight, I thought I'd take a look. Of course,
I loved it and immediately decided that it would make a GREAT series. But,
as we all know, it didn't happen. Several years later, while in the throes
of a long period of insomnia, I was looking for something decent to watch
after midnight and ran across Crimetime after Primetime. I had no idea
what Forever Knight was when I sat back to watch the premier, and it was
only after it started that I kept thinking, "I've seen this. How can I have
seen this? This is the premier!" After about 15 minutes, I finally
realized where it came from and I was so thrilled I wanted to wake everybody
up and share it. <I refrained.>

But, from that minute on, I followed the show from time slot to time slot,
network to network. I absolutely hated Black Buddha, feeling betrayed that
several of my favourite characters were being killed off, but gradually came
to like the new characters, although never as much as the original cast.
The night that Last Knight played, my neighbors heard my scream. I watched
the reruns until they went off the air and then watched my tapes whenever I
could after that. I even made a second set to loan out and hook others.
I'm happy to announce that I've personally brought across at least 10
others in the last several years. lol

Anyway, my cup runneth over that we've finally got the attention of TPTB and
have our beloved show back on the air. <I even went out and bought a brand
new VCR for the occasion so that I can get the best quality tapes for new
converts.

Happy watching, everyone.

I agree. I was so glad they showed that ep so I could watch it again. I
even noticed for the first time that JK had LaCroix' hairline in addition to
the accent, cadence and gestures.

I also found it interesting that I had planned to do some other things
during parts of the marathon and kept saying to myself, "I'll do them during
the next ep." Since I didn't keep a copy of what eps were being shown, I
really figured there would be a couple that I didn't like as much as others.
But that never happened. However, I finally *had* to break away to do some
stuff. Unfortunately, it was during AMPH - which is one of my favorite eps
:-( A friend of mine said the same thing. she was going to watch for a
couple of hours and go off to other things. She called me 6 hours later and
asked "Will they ever show a bad ep, so I can at least use the bathroom?"
<WEG>

I know there are people who have favorites that weren't shown, but even with
the confusion of moving between seasons (I had to explain something about
Vachon, Screed and Urs to a friend who hasn't seen 3rd season yet, and tell
her not to watch AtA) I really though Sci Fi picked a great batch of eps to
get people interested in watching.

;) Delurking....

I found Forever Knight (well, sort of) when it was on USA. I was just
flipping through the channels, looking for something to watch. Saw
something interesting...watched it. I was sick at the time, so it was
all a bit fuzzy, and I had no idea what time it was or what channel I
was on. Not only that, but I had no idea what the show was called, only
having seen the last 40-45 minutes of the episode (later realized it was
Sons of Belial), but I was immediately hooked. Only problem was, I
didn't know what I was hooked on....

I refound FK about six months later through fanfic...crossovers,
specifically...searched for more, found fkfanfic.com, and read away.<g>
Later, I found out Forever Knight was being shown on SciFi, and after
watching a few episodes (first season, I think), I started taping. When
SciFi stopped airing it, I was a bit stunned. I didn't watch a lot of
TV, and just about the only show I regularly watched had disappeared.

I've been on forkni-l and fkfic-l since September 2000...didn't even
really know about the lists until 2000, although I had heard about
fkfic-l. I'm glad to have found them, though.<g> I haven't yet met (in
person anyway) any of the list members, nor have I been able to find
anyone offline that has even *heard* of FK without me telling them about
it, let alone be a fan. At least that last part is going to change a
bit.... A friend of mine has been helping me with my grammar in my
fanfic, but she's never actually *seen* the series...till yesterday,
anyway. Well, she's now a convert, and will be seeing my tapes this
summer.<g>

Here's mine:

I've been a vampire fan since I read Dracula in Junior High ('88 or '89), so
I was of course interested when I saw an article in the local paper about
the Rick Springfield made-for-TV movie which was basically a pilot for a
future series. I watched it, I loved it, I waited with bated breath for a
series to follow. I waited, waited, waited, gave up & started breating again
and then eventually noticed the Crimetime After Primetime ads. I was
thrilled and totally, instantly hooked. I converted my brother and a pile
of my friends (we were playing Vampire the Masquerade RPG a lot at the time)
and I could have screamed when it was cancelled. But it came back, so I was
happy because something this cool, this good would HAVE to stick around for
years, right? Then canceled again, back again, no problem - well, Schanke
gone was a *huge* problem, but I still figured there were many, many seasons
ahead. I couldn't speak for 10 minutes after seeing Last Knight - I felt
lost. That's when I ran to the internet and found all the other fans, the
wonderful fanfiction, and this list, and I've been lurking ever since. =)
Now if only I could get my cable company to carry SciFi!

I discovered FK about 2 1/2 years ago when it was on Scifi. Since I was
drawn to it immediately,-like McLisa, I watched Dark Shadows in high school
and always loved angsting, reluctant vampires, too-I started taping the
episodes, and for once, didn't erase each eps after I watched one like I
normally do with other shows. Fortunately, before it went off the air, I
was able to see all 70 of them.

After the show was gone from Scifi, for months, I felt empty inside, but
much to my delight, I found the Fk bboard where I *met* a great bunch of
people, some I've kept in touch with these past couple years.

Last year, a friend from the bboard suggested that I subscribe to the
FKfic-L and Forkni-L, that it was a great place to read new fiction, post
stories and discuss our beloved show. So I did. And I've been here ever
since, *meeting* another wonderful group of individuals.

I don't think I met you there, but I was there, and I see you're in
Columbus. We should hook up sometime! My life is kinda all about
[Shameless Plug Alert!] Titanic down at Little Theatre Off Broadway down in
Grove City at the moment, but drop me an email anyway.

Assuming it was the same Visions (I can't remember whether Nigel went more
than once), I think it was the last Visions they held (*pout*),
in...um...1998, I think? Yeah, because it was the year before I got
married.

My main memory of it is Nigel and Nick Brendon (Xander on BtVS) doing a Q&A
together, admitting at the beginning that neither had seen the other's show,
and later coming to the joking conclusion that the shows should trade bars.
*g* Oh, and at Nigel's solo Q&A the attending NatPackers all sat in a row
in our scrubs to devil him. ;-) "Childlike." -- "Child-ISH!" If you
recall him telling someone in the audience that he hadn't seen her in YEARS
and she was just as loud as ever, um, that would be me. *blush* He also
came up to me at breakfast in the hotel restaurant the next morning to say
hi and ask what I'd been up to. Always a sweetie, our Nigel. (Now if
someone would just give him a regular gig on a show I could stand to
watch... *sigh*)

I spent most of the con in the dealer's room with my costumes, but made sure
to get to his appearances!

> Here is what I remember:

Did it really? Cool. I *crashed* after the celebrity variety show -- it
went even later than usual because...

> 3) One woman played an acoustic guitar

The marvelous Julie Caitlin Brown (b/k/a Na'toth from B5), who ended up
doing an entire little concert at the audience's insistence, rather than the
one or two songs she intended. She has two CDs out now, and they're
awesome.

If this is what you're talking about, that is, and not someone from the
group you hung out with.

> 4) Another woman did some fantastic video editing

Ooooh, we definitely need to hook up, my friend... ;-) Oh, and the
listowner and another member of the OhioCostumers email list are also FK
fans. I love that I still run into them after all this time!!

> Jeez, that is all I can remember. I saw Sons of Belial today

Hear, hear! I realized when I made my first vid last year that I *so* need
to retape, like, the *entire* series. I know I've gotten spoiled by DVDs,
but I was absolutely appalled by the state of my first season tapes
especially. It shows up worse on those because they shot first season on
16mm, of course, but nonetheless, ack! I may redo the vid once I get all
the eps retaped.

I'm currently doing so from DVD with an SG-1 vid I made last year (those
tapes aren't 10 years old, but the way our cable was at our last apartment,
a couple of them might as well be!). I've actually bought a region-free
player for that reason, since everything gets so tied up in syndication
deals in the U.S. -- the Brits are about to start getting season 5 DVDs of
SG-1, when we won't even get season *2* until September! Razzemfrazzem
syndication deal clauses. :-PPPP At least we hopefully wouldn't have to
deal with *that* if anyone ever managed to move the immovable object that is
Sony licensing department inertia enough to get the home video rights to FK.

*sigh* Every time I capture from DVD and see how pretty the vid turns out,
I curse in several languages about Sony's complete indifference to FK. I've
seen the thread on here about all the weird niche stuff that gets put out on
DVD while FK gets ignored, so I won't add to it, but *man*, does it fry my
jets!! We'll never, ever get to see the original airing versions of the eps
again, except on the10-year-old tapes we all have rotting in our cabinets.
It's downright criminal. *grumblegripegroan*

It would certainly have made more sense. Ger said at the First Gerthering that
the cab was a real one which was already there. His looking into it was an ad
lib which the director wanted to keep. They had to work out a payment with the
driver to hang around while the scene was shot and reshot.

Was Ger himself the director? I can't remember.

Oh, and as a bonus, there's action in the background where a young woman rushes
up to an elderly man who has been standing on the opposite sidewalk staring at
the scene, then leads him off. Ger said he didn't know anything about it but
that the description sounded like the production assistant, Michelle. So he was
shown the tape. "Yep," said Ger bemusedly, "that's Michelle." Apparently the old
man wouldn't get out of the way so she took this method of getting him out of
the shot.

Subject: Re: Memories of the Knight

I know I watched at least one ep of FK while it was on
CBS Late Night, but it didn't make an impression on me
beyond thinking, "Hmmm, cute blond guy...".

Several years later a coworker told me about "This show
about a vampire cop in Toronto." My initial reaction
wsa "yeah, there's a stupid premise!" This must have
been during the third season because she was a Vachon
fan (she had a thing for guys with long hair <g>).
Anyway, after my initial scoffing, I found I was
fascinated and couldn't wait for each new episode.

I've never been a fan of the supernatural, I thought DS
was stupid, and never read any vampire books, but FK was
different. I never thought it was about vampires per se,
but rather the story of a tragic hero and the nature of
good and evil. It was that that attracted me---and still
does. The vampire stuff is just a small part of the
whole. One thing I really enjoyed was that it was
frankly set in Toronto, and didn't try to pretend it was
in New York, LA, Chicago, or some other nameless big
city.

I was just discovering the Internet at that point and
stumbled across a newsgroup, then Susan Garrett's
website, and finally FORKNI-L and FKFIC-L. Bliss!

I was sucked into the webworld of fandom, loving the
discussions we used to have on the ML. Then, in honor of
Susan Garrett's birthday, I wrote my first little
fanfic, and I've been writing them ever since. (Susan
was very sweet when she wrote to thank me for this
bumbling little first story--thanks, Susan! I appreciate
it--and I still have that note in my story file drawer!)

One thing I regret about all this---I could have gone to
Bridging in San Francisco, but didn't. :-( I'd been to
one con in my life, one of those big Star Trek things,
and didn't think much of it. I thought Bridging would be
just like that, and why should I waste money flying
halfway across the country to go? I could kick myself!
Not only was the auction fabulous, but it was NB and JK
and Ohama Netsuko and ... well, I missed a great time.
(I've gone to all the LCAs since then---I'm not going to
pass up an auction/party again <g>).

I've loved every minute of it all, and hope that it
continues a long time.

Subject: FK on DVD

OK, I've got an inkling of an idea here...

I'm upgrading my satellite equip to include a PVR.

Now, I'm wondering.... couldn't one hook up their PVR,
feed it to the computer, and create DVDs?

Of course, one needs a DVD/RW, and those are a touch
on the expensive side, but I'm considering it.

Anyone else have a DVD/RW and a PVR? Have you tried
this? You'd be going digital-digital, so the picture
should be excellent.

This could be our much sought-after FK on DVD...
without TPTB having to lift a finger. Of course, if I
get this running, I'd be willing to dupe. But I'm
still in the equipment-gathering phase, so it would be
a while.

Then again, I could be totally wrong, and there's some
digital protection that won't work.. I usually am.

Right. Pizarro and his men were about a thousand miles north of Lake Titicaca
in 1531. Still in Inkan territory, but they hadn't actually traveled that
deeply or engaged in open combat yet. The actual conquest/ransom of Atahualpa
didn't occur until 1532/33, so this makes Vachon's battle with the Inka a
surreal blip in the timeline of history. But what else would you expect from
FK? <g>

As for the time of conquistadors, they definitely, absolutely date earlier than
1540-50s. Not only was Pizarro's conquest of the Inkas in the 1530s, but
another biggie, Cortes, conquered Cuba in 1511 and the Aztecs 1519-21.
