Ouch! Not that we're bitter or anything. ; - ) I don't know what went on
behind the scenes but, as everyone knows, there are usually a number of
fingers in the pie when it comes to TV and film-making. Who knows what
pressures were put on him?
Particularly with LK (even tho I think as an ending it works - esp as a dream
sequence!), that might have been a case of "%$##@^%& it! they killed my
baby/creation/best-thingey twice already and now they are going to kill it
*again* and this time if anyone is going to do it then it is going to be *me*

the specific purpose of burning the manuscripts. Crazy? Nuts? Insane?
Over the top? In the case of FK --overkill? Yes. Absolutely. Do I
understand why he would do it. Yes to that, too. Imagine getting cancelled
once. That's bad enuff but *3* times! when you <know> the viewers and the
fans are out there? And the 3rd time it's brought back, the network mucks
with the cast and story? The horror. The horror.

Yellow! (hello, new LC joke there!)

So I just received my most excellent, non-heinous item #31 from the KTK
auction: the Variety Ad. I got the whole issue. And l must say, seeing it
in context, the ad is *very impressive*. Variety has some color details here
and there, but the ad is so big! It really stands out. It isn't like the
ads you see in your newspaper where there are a gazillion other full page and
half page ads to compete with one. This was the *only* ad of that size in a
fairly small publication (it does come out daily). I kinda had to look to
find the regular ads. I have to believe that somebody noticed. If you read
Variety daily and didn't see another FK ad for another year, and didn't know
what FK was, you'd open it up and say, "Here's this thing again, what the
he!!? Who are these people? Why don't I have any rights to this franchise?
How can I get them and make money?" ;- )

The website reproductions did not do them justice. Well done. These were
definitely worthwhile.

Subject: Re: Parriott's new show

Haven't seen it yet, and I'm not a big fan of Ally McBeal, but an article on
the BBC website from last spring had this interesting tidbit:

"We knew Fox wanted a show compatible with Ally McBeal and the creator, James
Parriott, had always wanted to set a show in an embassy, because they're
fascinating places," said John Landgraf, president of Jersey Television.

His company is producing the show in association with 20th Century Fox
Television. Jersey's parent company, Jersey Films, produced Erin Brockovich
and Pulp Fiction.

"We decided on a woman in London, because it's one of the most international
cities, but were concerned that Americans generally don't want to watch shows
about people in foreign countries," he added.

"Jim thought about it and came back with a series of letters he wrote from
Emma to her best friend and parents.

"He got stationery from the American embassy and several hotels in London,
and created a whole scenario for this woman's adventures through her
letter-writing.
Several women read them and said they could not believe it wasn't a
25-year-old woman who wrote these letters. We took that to the network, which
bought it instantly."

Subject: Re: Parriott's new show

My first impression at watching the first episode of 'The American Embassy' is
that, as well as 'Ally McBeal,' this show is taking advantage of the popularity
of 'Sex and the City' (the voice/type over of introspective e-mails) and
Bridget Jones (London setting, and the actress playing the lead bears a
resemblance to Renee Zellweger). I was even imagining that there was a little
Tracy in the Emma Brody character, and a speck of Vachon to the 'evil cowboy of
the dark side' CIA agent Roach. At that point, I thought I'd tune in again, at
least until the WB airs new 'Angel' episodes in April (an irony there
somewhere). With the last scene featuring a car bomb attack on the embassy,
though, I felt emotionally manipulated. I can't be entertained by that. It was
far too deliberate, and I promptly lost any interest in viewing future episodes
of this show.

I particularly sympathize with that aspect which is
never discussed thoroughly. I can imagine going
through the dismay of rejection and having to stash
your story under your own bed. But the horror of
someone going through your story, getting their hands
on your brainchild ideas and deciding to ditch some
characters and add other ones is beyond my endurance.

This simply proves how simple minded some network
execs and producers are, mixing up people's worries
with popular trend. Just because terrorist attacks are
on most people's minds these days doesn't mean you
should get confused and try to create entertainment
out of it.

Subject: FK viruses - Part I

Lately there had been some discussions on the list about
viruses and how we could protect our data from them. This
triggered the initiation of my next FKized specialty
list. Now if I have your attention, here are some of the
world's deadliest FK viruses and their side effects.

---------

The ‘Nick Knight’ Virus:
A deadly virus with many different names such as
‘Nicholas deBrabant’, ‘Nicholas Forester’, ‘Nick Parker’,
‘Nicholas Hammond’, ‘Nicholas Girard’ and ‘Nick Thomas’.
This multitude of names has made this virus virtually
impervious against all anti-virus programs because every
time, it enters the computer with a different name. The
virus settles itself inside the main memory of the
infected computer and becomes active during the night.
Its greatest danger is that it tries very hard to switch
from being a virus to becoming an application. The side
effects of the infection are the multitude of error
messages the virus creates; apologizing on the user’s
behalf each time s/he deletes a file or terminates an
application. No known cure is yet found.

The ‘Natalie Lambert’ application:
This is not really a virus but a CPU occupying mutated
application that forces the computer’s Central Processing
System into over-work. It has a built-in file that
attaches itself to the ‘Recycle Bin’ and sorts out the
files. There, the application opens each and every
deleted file and examines its various properties such as
size, type, attributes, and date of deletion. After
completing its assessment, it reports the reason of
deletion into a log file. If a computer that has this
application installed on it gets infected with the ‘Nick
Knight’ virus, the application turns into a more
hazardous version of itself and will volunteer to aid the
virus in its transformation into an application.

The ‘Lucien LaCroix’ virus:
Also called the ‘Luscious Lucius’ or the ‘Nunkies’ virus.
It is the stealthiest virus of all. Its deadliest effect
is that it searches for all files that have the four
letters N.I.C.K in that order in their names, and changes
their extensions to “.mine”. Because this extension is
not known to any system, the files become corrupted. The
‘Nightcrawler’ virus is a mutation of this virus, which,
aside from its other effects, manipulates the help files
of some softwares, turning their instructions into
nonsense monologs.
Note: no known anti-virus program has yet been detected.
It is said to be too old and powerful to be destroyed.

Coming up in Part II: The 'Javier Vachon', 'Screed',
'Janette DuCharme' and 'Divia' viruses. Please stay
tuned.

Subject: Marathon Warning Signs

You Know You Are Getting Too Excited About the
Upcoming FK Marathon on Sci-Fi When:

1) you are visiting the Scifi.com website every hour
on the hour just to "be sure this is not an April
Fool's prank"

2) you've already planned lunch and dinner for the
1st so you can "cook" during the commercial breaks

3) you ran out and bought a brand new VCR to ensure
the highest possible quality tapes are made this
time around

4) you go to Sears and check to see if the Wall of
Televisions gets the SciFi channel

5) you've already taken the 2nd off, along with the
1st, so you can do your own personal FK marathon
immediately after the "official" one.

6) all your family knows that if they call between
11AM and 11PM on the 1st, someone had best be headed
to the hospital - or they soon will be.

7) you've checked to see if a FK t-shirt can be
airexpressed from New Zealand in time to "worship in
style"

8) you've just bought 50 feet of phone line so you
can drag your PC in next to your TV so you can chat
on-line while watching

9) You don't have cable and you are going through
your list of ex-significent others to see who has
cable that you can tolerate a one-night stand with -
just this once.

10) The living room mantel is a shrine to FK that
contains all your tapes/CDs and an authentic Coke
can that Nigel Bennet sipped from. An array of FK
fan-fiction is delicately fanned on the end-tables
in preperation for the commercial breaks. On the
coffee table is a pop-corn maker, a double-expresso
machine and a bottle of good French champagne (right
next to fritos and spicy spanish-style salsa).
There is a 24-hour Polish deli that delivers on all
six speed-dial buttons of the phone and you've found
the cutest catnip rat for the cat. You've got
festive partyhats for yourself, the cat, the dog and
3 spares for whomever else shows up on the 1st.
There is a 30 foot mylar banner that reads "WELCOME
BACK!!! WE MISSED YOU!!!" strung corner-to-corner
in your living room where the television can see it
and folks are whispering to their kids to stay away
from the "crazy person in 4C"

Hi everyone!
As good of a job as Shana (Hi, Sis!) has been doing keeping everyone up
to date, I thought I'd let you all in on the good news, personally!
I had a whole mess of tests done last Monday, and my Doctor has
officially declared me to be in remission!!!
THANK YOU!!!! Without all of your love, prayers, encouragement, and
generosity, I don't think that I would have made it this far. You are
all truly like a family to me, and I am really blessed!
I still have to go for radiation therapy for a few weeks, but my Doctor
says that is to help destroy a few existing large tumors.
I have pnuemonia now, so I am still not up to my usual self, but I am
trying! When I feel up to it, I work on some of my stories (especially
'When Darkness Falls'), and have even managed to spend a little time
online lately.
I'm heading back to bed now. I have to hurry up and get well, so I can
find out what I've missed!

Since Ger is doing about 35 performances over a 2 month period, there
will be several groups planning to make the trek to Toronto and
Stratford to see the play. I suspect you can attend almost any
performance between July 14 and Sept 14 and run across an FK fan or two.
However, if you are planning to attend, better get your ticket and
accomodation orders in quickly because from all accounts, this is the
most popular offering at Stratford this year and tickets are selling out
fast.

The URL for information and ordering is www.stratfordfestival.ca and
there are links there for accomodation in and around the town.
Stratford is about 1 1/2 hours drive from Toronto.

If you need specific info about Toronto or Stratford or if you want an
FK Tour while in Toronto, feel free to contact me off-list.

First of all, guys, please, let's be careful about how we talk about FK people
on list. That includes James Parriott. It also includes differences of opinion.
Let's also be careful how we talk to other list members. If you wouldn't like to
receive the post you're sending, please don't post it. Forkni-l is a flame-free
zone. See rule #1.

It may be partly my fault for not having explained, when I told people about the
script for Last Knight, that the reason was probably to get back at Sony. You
see, a show which has a known downer ending is much harder to syndicate. I used
to email JP occasionally when the show was on the air. He was always pleasant
and timely in his responses.

About strong women:

That part of season 3 is not JP's fault. He didn't write the shows in which
Natalie turned into a whining shrew, nor was he story editing or line producing.
Sony/TriStar owned the show and had the actual say as to what happened. They're
the ones who changed or insisted on removing characters. The loss of Janette was
not his doing, either. S/T was the one who insisted on that. Tracy was
certainly a strong woman, and JP created her.

So anyway, please, let's all take a deep breath and step back. We want to be
fair to everybody -- nice, if you will accept the word. :)

which totalled my car. I'm ok and it wasn't my fault, but the point is, I'm much

The second part of my Arts and Activism essay (which I'm
doing on FK fandom--believe it or not) focuses on this
issue. I'm even quoting from our dear list mommy (waves
to mclisa). It's always the network executives who screw
up shows to get more ratings. Why they think messing up
with a good story will gain them that is out of my
comprehension.

I'll let you know when the essay is complete. I'll post
it someplace and send the URL to the list for anyone who
wants to read it.

upon both of them! The stories are "The Phonix" and "The Changeling" and are by
Nancy Bonilla. They explore post-LK and do a great job of turning that ending
around in an intriguing and plausible manner. The author does a wonderful job
at exploring the characters, their complexities and the complexities of their
relationships. I highly recommend them.

It's not what I see, quite the opposite, but I realize it's the most popular
view. What I always find really funny though, is that LK is often called
a Shakespearean ending, yet never heard anyone claiming such motivations
for *that* guy??
Don't know much of him myself, but from what I keep reading around this
fandom, he liked to "kill everyone off" at the end of his plays too, and even
repeatedly! Boy, that must have been an evil guy!!! How is it possible that
after all these centuries there are still people who actually *like* his stuff,
and even praise him?!
Or could it really be possible that aside from temper tantrums there might
be other intentions possible too??

> I will never again watch anything with his name on it under any

Yes, and don't forget to burn the first 69 episodes of FK too, they were his
doing as well ;)
Sorry for the slight sarcasm folks, not meant personally, but I just happen
to like LK a little too much, and must be seeing a whole different show than
most!

> Imagine getting cancelled once. That's bad enuff but *3* times!

Actually, it was *six* (!!!!!!) times, what a shame! Oldies please correct
me, if I confuse some details, I'm only trying to recall some of your
anecdotes!

1) The pilot with Rick Springfield wasn't turned into a series,
    a break of 3-4 years.
2) In the middle of first season CBS cancelled it for Letterman <grrr>
3) Cancelled again after first season, break about 2 years
4) And yet again after the second season, another 1-2 years
5) In the middle of third season it was cancelled around christmas,
    just so, no warning
6) (So far?) Last cancellation after finishing third season with LK

So in 1996 J. Parriott had been with this baby of his for already eight
years, six cancellations and all the uncertainty and fights in between,
the networks kicking Janette and Schanke etc., and in the end they
could be glad to be allowed to finish it at least!
Guess he felt it was the last chance and wanted some closure, even
when he and the cast still kept supporting the KtK supports, and basically
it was a cliffhanger (and a brilliant one - IMHO of course ;P)
And he also seems to always have been very supportive of us fans.

I don't wanna know how many of us fans would have endured so long!
Not me, I'm afraid, but hooray to our crusaders <g>
