I have been trying to *forget* that story ever since I first read it.
Just imagine.... immortal Teletubbies.... <shudders>

Actually, it was pretty funny - anyone remember who wrote it or what it
was called?

That was too weird even for me. :)
The only way I want to see either an immortal Teletubbies or Barney the
Dinosaur is flambe'd (or however you spell that) by hordes of angry villager

Subject: Time question for fanfic

Hi-
I have the story written and I am just tweaking it before posting it. I have
been meaning to ask... what is the canon (is there one) for the dating of
"Queen of Harps". My story takes place just after that when Nick is on his
way to join up with the crusade going to Jerusalem.
I am wondering on the timing, because I may have to adjust certain items. I
have it as circa 1225-6.
Also, (having a BA in history I should know this, but I don't) What would
one call a group of knights going off to the crusades? I'm thinking 'army'
but for some reason it doesn't sound right to me. If it is correct, fine.
Maybe I just need a second opinion.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Nicholas wasn't the only blond, but LaCroix decided that he wanted to be
different. "Mon Deiu," exclaimed Janette, while Natalie quietly went about
finding a quick exit. That will do it for me, she thought to herself. See
if I help him with a new hair style, next time! And all the while, Vachon
wondered what had happened to his Halloween hair dye kit.

Actually, I was trying to find out what those seemingly incoherent posts were
all about. I never thought of the game "Mad Libs" (which I've only played once,
but it was with FK people). I know about the teletubbies!

I've been klewed in, thanks very much!

Sue Clark wrote one called "Eh-Oh, LaCroix" involving LaCroix and the
Tubbies. It's quite funny and may be found at Mel's www.fkfanfic.com site.

Hmmm, what *would* one call a group of knights?

A shield of knights?
A surcoat of knights?
A cheval of knights?
A gallantry of knights?

Any more suggestions?

Not sure, other than Crusaders, but here is a good resource for
information. This is from the Internet Medieval Source Book web site
and is an account of the fourth crusade. They have a good crusade
section.

http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/basis/villehardouin.html

Here is also a link to information about Fredick II's Crusade, which
occurred between 1228 and 1229, and which might have been Nick's
crusade:

McLisa never did recover her lost sanity. Luckily, the List Gardiner wasn't
afraid to follow suit by declaring himself King of All Things Forkn-L.
However, when Tim was sent to the dungeon for a mere typo, Kyer wasn't about
to nitpick. And who would have expected Molly to be made Queen! Well,
evidently Kylie did, because why else was she wearing a "I luv Die
Hard/Uffish' tee shirt? But why Diane was too was always to be a mystery.
Why, if it hadn't been for Elise and her free Save The Knight ad 8x10

Oh gosh, yes! Animal is wonderful! The Cookie Monster/Tazmanian Devil in
red and stuck on permanent hyper-drive. I don't think LaCroix would be
amused at such baseness (isn't the Q-tipped one rather aristocratic?)
Screed would probably become his bosum buddy, though. I can see them both
running down an alley after muppet mice; Screed being dragged along while
holding onto Animal's leash for dear unlife."Mousey! Mousey! Mousey!"

Perhaps. I - however - would like to think that Animal
represents qualities that LaCroix would admire. After, all, Animal
has the courage to indulge in being what he is rather than denying
his self-nature.
I think the two would have an interesting conversation - once
LaCroix got the hang of using the electrified cattleprod.

Yup. <g>

>>We are all trying to improve our flawed ego-based little s selves and

I have to disagree with this. There are some of us--perhaps the more
fatalistic and cynical--who are just trying to keep a roof over our heads,
food in our bellies, and find a little laughter and happiness along the way.
In fact, on thinking it over, I think a great many people are seeking, not
self-improvement, but happiness. Nick isn't happy killing, but is he any
happier *not* killing? Therein lies the dilemma, methinks.

I enjoyed your analysis. My feeling is that if redemption is the issue,
Nick is redeemed by his change-of-heart towards killing, not through any
acts he may or may not commit. This is an old theological debate: are we
saved by faith alone, or by faith and good works?

I don't see Nick as the Shapeshifter/Trickster; if that archetype applies to
any of the FK characters, it applies most to LaCroix, whose motives are
always suspect and who sometimes seems to do 'good' in order to do harm, or
seems to do 'evil' in order to do good.

Nick is the archetypal Hero, but the Hero does not need to die. True, it is
hard for us to accept Heroes settling down happily to a mundane life (and
Tennyson wrote a wonderful poem on this, titled either 'Odysseus' or
'Ulysses', I forget).

If Nick is the Beast, then the question becomes 'can the Beast be redeemed,
or is it impossible for him to change his essential nature?' We can also
ask, 'is it necessary for Nick to be redeemed?'

For me, myth and archetypes aside, the essential question of FK is: "What
does it mean to be 'human'?"

We wouldn't still be on this list if we didn't all have our own
interpretations of these questions and our own answers. <g>

Funny you and Kyer would bring up this discussion; I was thinking about this
very subject on my way back into the office from lunch. I was thinking how most
of us perceive LC as this urbane aristocrat with sophisticated tastes. BUT, I
still think most of us (including myself) have neglected exploring the side of
LaCroix that was not only comfortable, but successful as a *rock* disc-jockey
and a very...hmmm...zestful strip show emcee. Think about Nick's fantasy of
himself and LC as rock stars -- I think he was giving us a glimpse of LaCroix
that we didn't see very often on the *show,* but that might have been very
evident to those who hung out with him enough. I think he could be the coldly
controlled sophisticate AND the wild play-boy, whichever suited him at the time.
Though I've always pictured him in his 50's, it was recently discussed here that
he was more likely in his 40's -- just about the right time for a second
"childhood" and a new set of wild oats! "g"

As for the comment regarding the cattle prod...well, I have an uneasy suspicion
that he probably is very familiar with that instrument, along with many other
forms of persuasion/amusement....Brrrr! "g"
