Subject: Uncommoncon in Dallas cancelled

I wanted to let everyone know I've just received official confirmation that
UnCommon Con in Dallas, Texas schedule for the US Thanksgiving Day weekend
has been cancelled. PN (Pat) Elrod (co-author with Nigel Bennett) and I were
among the scheduled guests. (Nigel was NOT on the schedule)

Pat tells me some people are scrambling to try to get a one day
convention/party together in that same area for one day of that weekend. I
doubt I'll make the journey if it happens, but she might be there.

I don't know why the con was cancelled. I just wanted to let the list know as
I think some people were planning to go.

And in addition to the NightWatch monologues on Laura G's site, the Nunkies
Anonymous site has over seventy sound files for LC. Most are on the NunkAnon
Soundtrack page (We named and built it that before there were any soundtracks
to be had, so don't expect actual sounds from the CDs!) but there are a few
more scattered throughout the site.

And to add for those who have interests other than LC, there's still my old

If eyewitness accounts are true in that both the wing and the engine fell
off, then I find that rather suspicious given the airline, location, and
date.  Unfortunately, maintenance crew tampering won't show on a black box,
will it?

Greetings fellow listmembers!

As I'm now doing the Looking After Baby Andy Night Shift, I have had the
unparalleled pleasure of watching late night television in between those
hour and a half long diaper changing/feeding shifts.  I could do other
things, of course, but I want something vaguely mind-numbing after
cheerfully putting up with about 15-30 minutes (on average) of his crying
and occasionally screaming (he HATES being cold while being changed, imagine
that :-) )

About a week ago (sorry for the delay), I was aimlessly "watching" an old
episode of Friday the 13th the Series (well of course it's old; there aren't
any NEW episodes - and by the way why is it called Friday the 13th when it
has absolutely nothing to do with a crazed dead teenager raised from the
dead, vindictively killing camp counsellors enjoying the company of the
opposite gender instead of taking care of the kids???) when I happened to
notice none other than Catherine Disher (as an early 20 something) playing
Ryan's (John D. LeMay) girlfriend for the episode.  Talk about a blast from
the past!

As for why she was only his girlfriend for the one episode, well, you'll
have to catch it again one day to find out... (or ask me off list :-) ).

LOL.  I enjoyed the photos there and the "Llama Llament" so much that I brought
them to the attention of Shelley (my war 11 writing partner), who's not

I could see the flames and the smoke from my attic window.  I'm located at
the Ridgewood Reservoir a VFR reporting point for Kennedy.  The second
highest point in Queens.

Ok!!! :) The smile is because as far as we know no fans are injured. The posts
are ok, too. We usually do check on each other and report in when there's a
disaster.

I think we're all still jittery from the initial assumption that it was
terrorism. It's like September: there are times when strict adherence to
topicality isn't possible.

This is a fascinating idea. May I make a few suggestions, based on about 40
years as a student of personal names?

It sounds like the book or web site these came from is more romantic than
scholarly.

I can provide references, once I get home to my books, if anyone wants them.

"Nigel" is an anglicized form of a Gaelic name of unknown meaning. I'd guess
that "champion" was assumed from the Irish hero Niall (Irish form of the name)
of the Nine Hostages, who could be thought of as a champion. Nigel is a back
formation into English of the latinized "Nigellus." This is what happened when
Latin-writing scribes tried to spell what they thought they heard. To them the
Celtic name sounded like a diminuitive form of the Latin word niger, black. A
final r in Latin regularly becomes an l when a diminuitive ending is added. So
Nigel as an English name really means "little black" or, idiomatically,
"Blackie."

Bennett is a common surname. St. Benedict (the founder of western monasticism)
was a famous saint in the middle ages. The name was common in English. It was
pronounced "Bennett," so this is the form which became a common surname.
"Benedict" is Benedictus in Latin. It means "blessed."

So, Nigel Bennett's name translates into an English phrase,  more like Blessed
Blackie.

I'd suggest "old white loved one" or "shining old love" for a translation of
Ger's name.

"Geraint" is another one with an uncertain meaning. It seems to be a Welsh form
from Latin Gerontius, a name which the Romano-British took with them into Wales.
General opinion among name specialists is  "Gerontius" may be a  from a root
meaning "old," but this has never been proven.

"Wyn" means "white" or sometimes "shining," IIRC. This is a very common element
in Welsh names. To get the "friend" meaning you have to take the Saxon root
"win," which does mean "friend", as in "Edwin." (Literally, Edwin translates
from the Saxon as "rich friend.") Saxon name themes, of which win is an example,
were not used without a second theme (Ed + win, in the example). They were never
used in Welsh. For all of the period in which Saxon name themes were in use
(ending ca. 1100 with the replacement of most Saxon names by continental names
through Norman French) the English were the mortal enemies of the Welsh.

Davies derives from a Welsh pet form of David. (St. David is to Welsh
Christianity as St. Patrick is to Ireland. Hence the popularity of the name and
the commonness of Davis and its variant Davies.) David is generally translated
from the original Hebrew as "beloved," although I have seen this disputed.

McLisa, whose current nom de list can be very losely translated as "son of the
daughter of the oath," since "Lisa" is a short form of Elizabeth (Hebrew
"Bethsheva," which is usually explained that way.) I suppose it's better than
some of the things I probably get called offlist. <g>

Yes, the book gives the romantic meanings to names and rarely the literal
translations.  Personally (since my name literally translated means
Warrior Girl), I like the romanticized versions, best!
We still didn't find Kryshana's (Shana, for those of you that don't know
her full name).
