Subject: VCR ALERT!!! For JUNE

Well, hope you all got lots of blank tapes, that is why I do
this list, right???? June's got more than it's share of
movies, some new ones, some great ones, some that probably
aren't worth the tape, but this is a great chance to fill in
your collection of your favorite actor, or take a chance and
see someone else's work.

As always, I could have mis-read the guide, so please check
your local listings well in advance of when you plan to watch.

Yes, I know this is coming thru my China addy, it's just
working out that way, but it works. I'm in California for
the moment, but no jobs here right now, so may be moving
again soon.

Thanks for responding so quickly, Pat. <waves>

>It was Nigel's idea (he was pretty gleeful about it!) to "cast" John as Charon.

I think it was the "man 'o man 'o man" quote that clued me in on it, or was
it the "hasta la bye-bye" quote? Hmmmm....

>The only on purpose in-joke were the fans in the elevator with the

I had forgotten about those fans in the first book. LOL. They were fun.

My thoughts, also. If Nigel wrote himself into Bourland - any thoughts on
who could be Richard? I read both books hearing Nigel's voice in my head.
It seemed to fit, too!

<<Ah, but then why did the opening description of Richard in the first book

So we could sell the books to Nigel's fans. The idea was to "cast" Nigel as
Richard so allowing us strong visual image of the character in the "movie"
most writers run in their head while they're writing.

Should the books ever go to film Nigel expressed a preference to play
Bourland and to direct if it worked out that way. We're still waiting for
Hollywood to call and do lunch.....

If any of you would like a copy of HFS's cover for your very own--flipped
around the way the artist painted it, and signed by the artist if you ask--go
to Jamie Murray's website. He has some WONDERFUL Forever Knight pieces,
including "Prince of the City" which was the work that caught Nigel's
attention at a con and got Jamie the commission to do the cover. I don't
have the addy as my puter acted up, but a search for
Jamie/Murray/artist/Myhr, should put you on the right track. There are two
sites. The one not run by Sue Harkey has the better display of the art.

> You know I have wondered what Nick would make of Richard if they were to
> meet.Given Nick's view that all vampires are damned.

Nick needs to get his head out of his ass and get out more. <GG>

>How would feel to find out that there were at least two (counting Sabra)
>that were created by a Goddess to work in Her service? And how would
>LaCroix feel about one of them being his double?

Richard and Sabra are a different "breed" of vampire than Nick and his gang.
Ditto for Dracula, Jack Fleming, Quincey Morris, that whiney, rat-sucking
guy languishing in New Orleans (<GG>) Dragula, Blackula, Yorga, and so on.
LaCroix would likely have the sense enough to steer clear and not mess with
Richard or Sabra. He may be one of the head honcho old ones of his breed,
but THOSE two are under the protection of a bona fide goddess. Trust me--we
thought ALL this through! On the other hand, since Charon wasn't under any
godlike protection LaCroix would prolly have been able to beat the crap out
of him.

For those itching to answer these questions in a fan story, I humbly request
you please, please don't--at least not naming names or sending copies to me,
Nigel or any of our friends, etc. It's that pesky copyright infringement
thing and Jim Baen (like all the other publishers out there) has absolutely
NO sense of humor about it. Debate all ya like on the boards, though. I
think those are FAR more entertaining than a story anyway, much funnier. The
confrontation I would see between Richard and LaCroix is along the lines of
Harpo Marx and Lucy's "mirror routine." <GG>

You guys will be amused that Nigel and I did address one of these issues in
our story "Wolf and Hound," in the upcoming anthology from Ace, "Dracula's
London." In it Dracula has a near-fatal encounter with a highly pissed off
Sabra! It will be available this November, and contains stories about what
else Drac was doing when not being chased by Van Helsing. Contributors
include the likes of Fred Saberhagen and Quinny Yarbro, so be sure to check
it out!

<<If Nigel wrote himself into Bourland - any thoughts on who could be
Richard? I read both books hearing Nigel's voice in my head. It seemed to
fit, too!>>

Nigel did originally want to play Richard, but for him it's far more fun to
direct some other guy than to be out on a muddy field in 60 pounds of
chainmail whacking at someone with a 10 lb. broadsword for the week it would
take to shoot that scene. Anyone whose been in the SCA knows how old THAT
gets! It was only later, during discussions of the 2nd book that he thought
the Bourland part would suit him, so we expanded on that concept.

I also hear Nigel's voice in the narrative. Must be to do with how
terrifically well he performed the audiobook! I had the same thing happen
when I wrote "I, Strahd." First I kept hearing the voice of Brit actor Paul
Darrow in the part, then later it was Roddy McDowell because of his wonderful
performance in the audiobook.

By the way, it IS an "old writers' trick" to "cast" a character based on a
favorite actor or someone you know, helping us to visualize the person. The
character of Jordan Keyes is based on my friend, Kevin "Syko" Topham, hence
his unique phrasing of words. Kevin himself proofread and re-wrote that
part, chiding me with "You almost got it right, but this is what I'd really
say...." He really does live in a small place with lots of cats, one of whom
is a massive female named Mr. Monster. She is known to hide behind his
microwave when he has guests. Kevin was also the cover model for the Quincey
book--though that's not his hair--LOL. And girls--he's straight and single!
You should send him a pic! (He's gonna KILL me for that! Heh-heh!)

Here's more!

Humph--everyone's a critic. <G> Cheers-- Pat

<<Also I was surprised to find a big ole geographical and historical error
in the flashback part.

I'd be interested to know what it might be. Nigel and I were carefully vague
on some bits, so the stuff that IS in the story is as accurate as our
resource/research books could be. Was it the damn stirrups? Cause I KNOW
there were stirrups then! <G> Otherwise it was the "Normandy" thing. It
wasn't called Normandy until the Norsemen came stomping through a couple
hundred years after the beginning of Richard's story, but dammit, we couldn't
call him "that knight from a place that's going to BE called Normandy." :>D

You want another historical "error?" The figure of a curcified Christ that
Richard sees carved into the cross in the church scene was not used by the
early Christians as it was deemed too degrading and depressing and liable to
put potential converts off. It didn't gain much popularity until
Charlemagne's time, then the Middle Ages REALLY went in for it! On the other
hand it was STILL perfect for that scene!

<< I live in the Dallas area and I can tell you that Addison is a land-locked
town that is just north of Dallas- it is no where as big or remote as was
depicted in the story- there are at least three more suburbs to go before you
have a residence on a lot bigger than a 1/4 acre! >>

Tell them I was all over the Addison area--Richard had to drive north (on an
unnamed road for an unspecified distance) to get to the house from his
Addison HQ. Land-locked? I never said otherwise! <GG> The bigness illusion
comes from its seague into Dallas. Also "New Karnak" IS entirely fictional,
tho I have seen an ad in Texas Monthly magazine for a glass/steel
pyramid-shaped hotel in Galvaston. I sent a fax of it to Nigel and we had a
laugh on it.

Just a quick little factoid - None other than Lisa Ryder graduated from that
