Okay, so maybe Asperger's is the wrong kind of autism to have affected
Divia - don't forget we're talking about autism plus vampirism (plus
adolescence...) here, and that's a pretty lethel mixture! Maybe sociapath
is a better word for what's intrinsically wrong with Divia...

I'm no expert either, and was just throwing the idea out to see if anyone
can bring further illumination on the subject. I understand we have over
1,000 list members - do we *really* have no-one in the pysch professions on
the list?

Then again, these are FK fans I'm talking about... We don't need no
stinking pyschologists! This list is all the therapy most of us need...

Just for the record, because this outdated number gets repeated here
occasionally:
We *had* 1000 members, years ago. Unfortunately our number keeps shrinking,
as of today Forkni-L has only *661* subscribers. Incl. double addies and
probably lots of old members on nomail. Dimly I remember that 1-2 years ago it
was about 850. (And Fkfic-L dropped in that time from about 1150 to 877 now)
It's slightly frustrating :(

According to http://www.lsoft.com (official listserv page, gets updated daily)

Is this one that Ben Bass is in or did I miss it?

This is the fairly new one that Ger's in, isn't it?

I'm not a psych professional, although I have worked extensively in both
therapy and one-on-one teaching with autistic (and high-functioning autistic
like Asperger's) kids, and I do know a great deal about psychiatry and
psychology.

Divia does not in any way strike me as autistic. Autism and Asperger's are
distinct disorders with many complex symptoms. For one thing, Divia's
proposal to LaCroix is fairly out of step with autism. Autism is sort of a
sensory overload/underload problem... hence the stereotypical repetetive
behaviors (which Divia does not represent at all). Headbanging, rocking,
wristbanging, fluttering, etc. These are usually efforts to either seperate
from the world (dissociate) when too much information is coming in, or to
produce a sensation to concentrate on when too little is.

Not only does it involve social lonerism (notice Divia's withdrawl was noted
when she was brought across; so before that she may have been social, that
this was thought strange), but communciation problems, such as a lack of
understanding of emotional cues (they often feel the emotions but mislabel
them, or don't understand them), and don't understand body language as well
as spoken language.

Violence in autistic people is usually a response to a trigger, however
confusing it may be to non-autistic folks. The feel of a seam against the
skin, touching, getting wet, a loud noise, an emotion, and so on. Often it
is loud, and violent, but not planned or focused.

As for antisocial personality disorder (also called psychopaths, sociopaths)
it definitely fits Divia much more closely. Effectively, APD is the
disregard for morals, social norms, and laws despite the possibility of
punishment or consequence. Deceitfulness, conning, impulsivity, lack of
planning ahead, reckless disregard for safety of self or others,
aggressiveness, irritability, irresponsibility, and a lack of remorse, are
all symptoms of APD. This is almost straight out of the DSM IV (psychiatric
diagnostic statistics manual), I think.... It also must onset before the
age of 18, and there must be conduct disorder before 15, and must not be
part of schizophrenia or a manic episode (from bipolar disorder, or manic
depression).

However, people around Divia noted a change in her, when she was brought
across. She retreated from people. It's been a long time since I've
watched these episodes... but it seems like vampirism made marked changes in
her social behavior. I'm much more inclined to believe that her evil was
vampirism induced, with a lot of more mystical elements and so on, then
mental illness. I don't think she would've been diagnosable as anything
specifically, had she been psychologically screened, although with all
mental illness there's a lot of grey area. From the folks and friends I
have that have autistic spectrum disorders or are sociopaths, Divia acts
much more like a outright villianess than anything else.

I think Nick does suffer from clinical depression however. ;) Guilt,
trouble sleeping, hopelessness... he's so classic. I empathise, even if his
angsting annoys me... ;)

And I have to say, because of unfortunate stigmas, mental illness doesn't
make people evil.

The best website for autistic and asperger's that I've ever found has got to
be "Oops, Wrong Planet Syndrome",

http://www.isn.net/~jypsy/

which explores these spectrum disorders from the eyes of someone who *is*
autistic. If nothing else, read "How to Understand People Who Are
Different",

http://www.isn.net/~jypsy/bradrand.htm

which is written by an autistic man and is the best insight into the
autistic mind I have *ever* seen, in any form, net or otherwise.

Also, Knights in Darkness (KiD) is a Forever Knight fandom support group for
suffers of mental illness and neurological disorders, and can be found at

I just finished the book two knights ago and also liked it better than the
first. It had more of a character storyline. The first book seemed to deal
with the background of Richard Dun. This sequel had more mystery to it.
Now I'm waiting for the next in the series. The trouble with good books is
that the authors can't write them fast enough for the fans.

To the Tune of "16 Men on a Dead Man's Chest" and no, I don't know what it
all means, either. For those outside its market area, Tums is an antacid.

2. Please don't quote more than four lines of a previous post in replying.
If you have more than one point to answer, then you may quote the
relevant four lines for that point also.

3. Limit sigs to 6 lines. This includes all information, decoration
quotations and blank lines. Your name and address count as part of
the six. If you sign your name on a separate line above the body of text,
your name and the blank line or lines between count as part of the six

control that and it doesn't count as part of your sig.

4. Please don't send to the whole list when you are only talking to the
person who wrote the post you are answering.

5. Advertising on list is on a case by case basis. Please consult the
listowners, Lisa McDavid, <mclisa@m.......> or Don Fasig,
<Argent@e.......> for permission.

6. This list is for the discussion of Forever Knight. Cast, crew, staff
and producers in connection with what they're doing now or have done in the
past are ok. So are list members' FK- fannish activities and
arrangements to meet. Cons should only be announced on Forkni-l if someone
from the show is appearing, or if you're going to be there. Non-FK vampires,
or vampires in general, are _NOT_ ok. Vampyres@t....... does that.
McLisa can tell you how to subscribe.

7. Off-topic posts are _NOT_ allowed, no matter what they are about or how
urgent the warning may appear. If you have an off-topic post which you
think should appear on the list, ask one of the owners for permission.

8. The private lives of the cast are not a discussion topic. Occasionally
one of the fan club presidents will make an announcement, but other
than that, we leave the cast their privacy.

9. Only fan club presidents or other designated spokespeople may
make announcements of future projects for FK cast, crew and staff,
before said projects have been released or written about in the media.

10. No role-playing on Forkni-l. This includes no character names as
pseudonyms or posing as a character.

11. Each subscriber is limited to five posts per day on Forkni-l.
