....checking through the TV guide earlier this evening to see if there's
anything worth watching, I came across a show on the (European) National
Geographic channel called 'Nick's Quest'

Question: Why is the National Geographic doing a show on Nick Knight's quest
for mortality?

Checked through the rest of the week's guide, and found it's about a guy
called Nick Baker who's basically wandering around the globe looking to
encounter some of the world's deadliest critters. (Whatever turns you on,
sunshine!)

Pause...

Question: Why is the National Geographic doing a show on Nick Knight's quest
for mortality? <WEG>

Hope McLisa and Don will forgive what is technically an off-topic post - but
I'm sure I can't be the only fan of Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy on
this list. Sadly, author Douglas Adams died on Friday (11th May) of a
massive coronary - he was only 49 years old.

So long, Douglas, and thanks for all the fish!

And, to haul this vaguely onto topic: Which FK characters (whether regulars
or one-offs) do you think are secret Hitchies? I have this mental vision of
Natalie and LaCroix accidentally finding out they both share a love of
Adam's work, and they then leave Nick looking even more confused and
brick-like than usual as they start swopping favourite quotes and scenes
back and forth. Ending with:

NL: "It's no good, I have to ask! Since the Guide tells us that any
intelligent people we happen to meet are merely the figment of a deranged
imagination, and since you're clearly a highly intelligent person [quick
pause for LC to smirk appropriately!] - of whose deranged imagination are
you a figment?"

NK gasps in horror and tries to get between the two of them; LaCroix smiles
evilly and cooly replies: "Why, Lucius Domitius, known to history as the
Emperor Nero, of course, my dear - who else had a sufficiently deranged
imagination?"

De-lurking, gee maybe because it was such a long and INTERESTING journey.

When I started out to work this morning, I flipped on the radio in
the car and caught the last minute or two of Radio Reader on NPR. He
is reading "Suspension" and all I heard was a passage about two men
(I thought they were police) who were carefully holding their guns
and shooting a man who was running away from them. They each shot at
least eight rounds, and one of the men remarked that they had to have
hit him.
Unfortunately, the man running away had run into a dark alley.

I found myself thinking: Well, sure, Nick needed to get into the
alley so he could fly back to the morgue and get Natalie to remove
said bullets.

The line at the bank wasn't too horrible as I didn't get my mind off
FK until I had to unlock the door at work!

Bravo, Stormy--well said!! This is how many of us first met--through
someone's writing in some way, as a writer, or a beta reader. We have also
had some long-lasting friendships beginning here as a result.
I have read reams of fanfic--I read voraciously for relaxation anyway--and I
don't always like what I've read for one personal reason or another, but I
always respect the writer's work and effort to write that fanfic AND each
writer's bravery in posting their writing to a public forum of thousands ot
near-strangers.
Keep it up, all of you who write! If we don't like, we don't have to read.
And if you can, if there is *anything* you like about a story, even if you
don't particularly care for the story overall, write to the author and
*tell* them what you liked, and how it worked for you. Even criticism can be
presented in a positive way.

In any fandom, fics tend to take on certain characteristics and themes get
used over and over again. Some plots, it seems, are universal to almost all
fandoms -- babies, for example. And any show with a "curse" in it seems to
have cure fics (Ranma comes to mind).

It's cuz of these themes that I could write the Drinking Game. :> I wrote
them with the most common devices used by FK fic writers getting less drinks
than the repeating but less used plots deserving more. I didn't say whether
I liked or didn't like each thing, but I do recognize they happen.

I love it when someone can take a plot I've seen done many times and make a
good story out of it. That takes mad skills. :>

Some of the stuff on Sunny's list I agree and don't like. Some of those
things I love to read and seek out in fics. Some of my personal tastes run
exactly opposite to what seems to be prevalent in the FK community at large.
But what's important is that everyone keep writing and write what they
like and know.

I also agree that grammar and so on are a pain if it's jumbled or wrong, but
I'm a little more lenient about computer formatting problems than other
people might be, because I know how hard it is to set up the e-mail to look
right after it goes through the listserv, especially when you switch e-mails
as often as I. (*major sigh*)

It's like Mary Sue... some people love to read them, some people hate them,
and sometimes it just depends on the writer. But the most important thing
is whether it's fun to write.

Thanks for this point Bonnie.

I too have been driven to the wall over Nat being pregnant and still working.
I know it's only fiction but with today's knowledge of the unborn child
hearing and relating to outside influences, I don't feel it's responsible of
Nat to be working in the morgue and violent crime scenes while pregnant. It
was too effect the child's well being.

I also don't see the need for explicit sex. It just doesn't follow thru with
the characters and true storyline of the show.

But this is a free society and I envy all those people out there that can
write fic. I would never try it as I would bring about the 'Worst Fanfic
Awards" awards.
Well, that's just my opinion I could be wrong. {Dennis Miller}
Just keep writing and we'll keep reading.

Thanks to all the winners of the Fanfic Awards. Congrats!!!!

what i am wondering is if you had lacroix and zaphod beeblebrox in

zaphod's necks?

also, nightcrawler monologues vs. vogon poetry: which would drive
people to suicide first?

I can't agree with you here. The authors are always asking for feedback
which, of course, we always forget to do. You are entitled to your opinion.
That's feedback in a sense. An opinion doesn't mean you condemn or approve.
It's just an opinion. Something to make the other person or persons think
about. If we didn't have our opinions, then we wouldn't have this great
country we live in.

Fanfic writers, keep on writing. And we'll keep on reading.

I just went to a local con, and didn't see any Forever Knight stuff.
I really looked for it, too. There was lots of Star Trek, Klingon,
and Babylon 5 stuff though. Matrix (the movie) and Buffy/Angel
seemed to be the minor themes. So at least, there were vampires of
one sort. If we could get enough FK fans in MN to do a room party
next year at MarsCon with a Raven theme, it would be cool.

Subject: Our need to hear the opinions of others (was :Fanfic likes and
         dislikes)

I don't know if this has been covered yet or not, I deleted about half of
this type of post and only have read a few, but here is my opinion:

When I write a piece of fiction, I do it to please myself, granted. But
also, I do it to amuse and touch other people in some small way. I like to
make people laugh, and to make them think. How would I do that if I didn't
know what they thought was amusing or touching? I know that you cannot
please everyone, but I at least like to be original. For instance, I have
stayed away from writing a story about Nat being pregnant because I know it
has been way overdone. *Even though I REALLY want to sometimes because I am
pregnant and it is a way to relate my experiences.... ;)* But I can also go
and read some of the wonderful fiction that has already been written on that
subject if I want to escape into that particular world.
And that is why we write and we read, to leave our boring lives every once
in a while and journey to a place where anything can happen. We all have our
fantasies, which may not jive with those of everyone else, but we still have
them. And we know what WE want in a fanfiction.
But that is beside the point a little, which was that as writers, we
usually rely on public opinion to make us feel better. More important than
that though, I at least rely on those constructive opinions that help me to
grow and learn how to be a better writer. You can't just ask your beta or
alpha for their opinions, even though that is a start. I think that everyone
should be honest with each other when writing a review or sending comments.
Very important though, is to state both what you like, and what you don't
like; and do it in a nice way. You all know what I mean. If someone can't
handle hearing honest opinions about their work which is put in a helpful
way then they should not be putting their work out for everyone to read.
Because everyone is going to have an opinion one way or another, and we are
all adults who should be free to express those opinions. My rant is over for
now. :)

Hi Everyone:

First of all....note to Sunny, I hope you stay
around and keep up with the discussions. I've
enjoyed reading your emails while you've been on
the list.

Now, onto "Sing to Angel's" email: I guess I
venture "off the beaten path" in my fic
(especially where there's an issue that I feel
passionately about.) It's not that I want to be
unique with my fiction. It's just that once I
start writing, the characters just go off and do
their own thing. (Sometimes, as in Dave Dubois'
case, I have to rein them in, but that doesn't
happen too often.) There are subtexts involved
too which take time to develop. Accordingly, I
keep telling my tales and welcoming feedback both
from my beta readers and from all of you. (The
Xena fans are having fun with this latest story,
and are giving me feedback too, trust me.)

By the way, on the alternate universe thing. An
AU (such as the one that I'm playing with) does
take time to develop. The characters do have to
remain within their characters and yet interact
at the same time. This takes a great deal of
work, but if it's done right, it can be very
rewarding.

So, is anyone going to write another FK/X-Files
piece????<grin>

Thanks for listening!

Sincerely,

David
