Thanks for asking Kly, I had the same question, but assumed it to be
something of an inside joke that had been in the fandom before I became a
part of it. I'd like to know too.

Mary Sue is a traditional fannish name for a character that is remarkably
like the author. Or keeps saving the day in remarkably heroic fashion. The
term far pre-dates FOREVER KNIGHT and I think originated with Star Trek
fanfic.

We had a Mary Sue fk fanfic story a while back that was a lot of fun.

Mary Sue is a character <male version's are called Marty Stu> that is
"practicially perfect in every way." She bags the "hero," saves the day,
looks like a super model, has several PHD's in almost every science <and by
the age of 19, at that>, is popular, weighs only 105 <but is able to eat a 16
oz. steak every meal>, is 5 ft 8, and her make up never musses <even at
staying up until 5 AM after fixing the equipment plus improvements, and then
getting up 2 hours later and still is as attractive as ever>.

There are several variations, but I think you get the general idea.

And, yes, Mary Sue was born in the ubiquitous Star Trek universe, but has the
power to jump to other fandom universes at will.

Yes, she's the one who is so beautiful that all the men swoon over
her, she's smarter than Washu, and she's more creative than
MacGyver. If there is a crisis, all the trained Starfleet personnel are
stumped, but she knows exactly what to do.

>Mary Sue is a character <male version's are called Marty Stu> that is
>"practicially perfect in every way."

Other characteristics of Mary Sue is that she is often written to end up in
a romantic relationship with one of the characters that the author found
desirable. So, she may be the author written into the story, with variables
and circumstance enabling her to get the guy. Sort of a fantasy story.

A lot of Mary Sue is just that... fantasy stories... and poorly written.
I've seen a lot that just make me groan and shove it to the side or press
delete. Such stories are only written for the author... I have no real
desire to read other people's fantasies that come in this form.

Despite this, not all Mary Sue stories are bad!

One published example, which happens to be my favorite novel from any TV
show, is "Uhura's Song", which I think is Star Trek novel #18... or #21.
Something like that. Evan, one of the main characters, is very Mary Sue,
with Mad Skills Unlimited. She also seems to be an expression of the
author, who even wrote in references to her own name! And it's still a
great book. :> It also has kitties in it and I like kitties.

And I absolutely love some of the Mary Sue from FK fandom.... What makes a
good Mary Sue fic is that it's not just for the author; it's funny or
intriguing even if you're not in it.

Generally, in reference to fics where the authors *are* the characters, such
as Wars, Mary Sue generally refers to when the author angles themselves into
being in a relationship with one of the main characters, or being
ultra-perfect.

Mary Sue can be very fun to write -- after all, it's a little trip into the
universes set up by our favorite shows. But not all of it is great reading.
:)

Remember back when I stated that imho nobody was truly evil?
Well, there's an exception to every rule.

Mary Sue is evil.
Evil, eViL, EVIL! Even LaCroix will refuse to dine on a Mary Sue as she
gives worse nightmares than Divia on a Froot Loops high.
Just plain eeevilll.

And that's all I have to say. : P

Washu is the 20,000-year-old genius scientist in the Tenchi series of
anime (Tenchi Muyo, Tenchi Universe, and Tenchi in Tokyo). She
is extremely intelligent (and in Tenchi Universe, sometimes quite
mad). She usually looks like a teenager, but she has assumed
an adult look on occasion.

Tenchi is on Cartoon Network; I would suggest starting there to
start with, but get the tapes because CN heavily censors the
episodes. It's also on Univision on Saturday mornings.

Has anyone done a Tenchi/FK crossover?
I remember watching this in college in the sci-fi club on campus.
It was really good. Last I heard, there was a live-action version being filmed.

If anyone has, I'd like to read it. I wonder what Nick would
think of Ryoko, the space pirate. And Lacroix would meet
his match in Tenchi's grandfather (the former prince of Jurai).

For the FK fans in the Carolinas, 'Conquistadors' airs tonight(Wed.) on PBS.

For fans in the Cleveland/Akron area the episodes are also being repeated on
the weekends on channels 25 and 49. Check listings for times because they
often use shows like this for filler and will change the weekend time slots
on a whim.
