The real problem is that there are so many ways to define evil. Just taking
the different ways you can define evil is enough to give you a headache.
Let's see - there's society's definition. There's the religious definition.
There's the psychological/psychiatrict view. Not to mention the legal
definition of right and wrong.

And I'm sure most of you will have picked up immediately, that with society
and religion in particular - it all depends on when, where, which - after
all, once upon a time the Catholic church tortured heretics and burnt them
at the stake in public places. Yet nowadays the Pope attends services
alongside the Anglican Archbishop of Canterbury. Which one is wrong/evil
depends on which century you're in!

I think we have two - no, make that three - questions here:

1) Is LaCroix evil by our standards? (Any souls brave enough to say No to
this one?) And if so, by which set of standards - religious, moral (*not*
the same thing!), social, legal....?

2) Is LaCroix evil by his own standards? <VEG>....

3) Has his definition of evil changed over the last 2 millenia?

Hello,
Long time no see. I am just about finished with a story that has been
partially sitting in my hard drive for the longest time. I was wondering
what major city would be an hour or so away (*grin*, flying distance) from
Toronto?

Also I need a few beta readers to make sure my story does not embarrass
me, grammer-wise. Thanks!

If you are talking about a commercial air flight, the nation's capital
Ottawa Ontario, is about an hour away. So is Montreal Quebec. Detroit
would be about the same distance.

If you are talking about vampire flight, that will be a lot more
difficult, as it's never been established exactly how fast a vampire can
fly. <g>

Try Kingston. It's just 303 Kms away from Toronto. That's the closest
major city I could find.

Question for the general audience: Has it been

reflection, and if he does have one, is it normal or
distorted? I'm guessing he does, because that would
be a little hard to disguise, but I'm not sure.

In FK Cannon, we see Nick has a normal reflection. However, in one
episode, while in front of a Mirror, Nick does state to Nat something
about not always having a reflection.

Well, this does bring to mind another quote that evinces a callousness for
human life, "If they would rather die, they had better do it, and decrease
the surplus population." It *does* matter when and how human beings die.
The manner of our deaths can be evil (murder, genocide, neglect, abuse, war)
or natural. Death by accident is a tragedy and a terrible thing. Death
after a long life or long illness brings grief but also can bring peace.
And the manner of our deaths can have a profound effect on those around us
and those that care about us. It matters whether my loved one meets death
at the hand of someone who takes their life b/c they have a total disregard
for life (and their life in particular), or under the care of a hospice
worker. And each life cut off short cuts off all that life's potential for
great deeds, profound thoughts, simple decent interactions, small gifts of
the heart that would improve the life of or give comfort to another. To
paraphrase: no man is an island; the death of each man diminishes me.

Of course, this whole argument must rest upon the principle that individual
human life is worthy of reverential respect -- a profound argument and one
that each person must decide for themselves (which infers the denial of the
idea of an "absolute truth" in this matter, though I personally feel
otherwise). I find myself answering this question by imaging the horrors
perpetrated by Hitler -- I imagine the millions he had sent to the death
camps, and I imagine the pictures I've seen of individuals rounded up to be
sent to these camps. Others have led wars, but Hitler strikes me as
superlatively evil b/c of the nature of the death he brought to these
individuals, and the manner by which he did it -- an arbitrary and anonymous
death sentence for an "accident of birth," with no regard for each
individual's dreams, relationships, interconnectedness and impact on others,
or innate worth. Then I imagine some of the most obnoxious, disagreeable
people I've known, and acknowledge to myself that even they had qualities
that I recognized as admirable (no matter how few and far between). And then
I think of the value I place on those I love -- my family and friends -- and
I think about the qualities that make them valuable to me, and I have to say
that, in my estimate, human life is profoundly important and that it *does*
matter the nature by which each individual dies.

I have to admit that this side-steps the argument of whether fk vampires can
be held accountable by human standards for taking a human life. For me, the
argument that Nick and company don't *have* to drink *human* blood, is
insufficient, because I think (from things Nick and LaCroix have said) that
vampire nature is defined by more than just the need to drink blood. I
perceive that Nick has more than just a drive to drink blood, but an actual
drive to commit violence -- an aggressive, destructive urge, the urge to
hunt, to intimidate, to overpower, to not only acquire blood, but to bring
about *death.* That is not going to be overcome or even palliated easily by
drinking out of a bottle....

Can we hold LaCroix et al accountable to a human standard regarding
reverence for human life? In my mind, yes -- "the child is father to the
man" and the human is sire to the vampire, ultimately. The kinship is
undeniable; vampires are altered humans who prey upon their physically
disadvantaged kin with a mindset of "my needs before and despite any
others." It is ultimately a selfish and morally bankrupt lifestyle. Once
someone has gone down that dark road, is it easy to change? I admit no, but
it's never easy to make amends for wrong decisions and for self-centered
actions, and sometimes the consequences for those choices are tragically
high -- but in that case, who should pay? In deciding that, true integrity
and true evil, I believe, is revealed.

It matters to society, to the survivors, and for all we know, to the dead. I
expect it matters to them while in the process of dying, at any rate.

> And humans don't have that mindset? We *all* take care of

But many humans overcome that survivor instinct, as illustrated by those people
who sacrifice themselves for others.

I think Nick has shown us that he has that tendency, as shown by his involvement
in human affairs fighting for what he sees as the right, or protecting people he
could easily abandon (working in the French Resistance, going out in the day to
save Schanke from the woman who really wanted to kill Nick, etc.). Granted, he
doesn't run quite the risk of death that a human does, but he does imperil his
own existence. Janette does this as well, to a lesser extent, in her protection
of the prostitutes.

As for Lacroix, I don't see him doing that --- he would simply leave if things
got too inconvenient for himself. He even abandons Janette when things get
dicey. He sees Nick's nobler tendencies as folly, not virtue.

Well, I have to admit that I can't say for sure if I would view death as
wearing a different face if I were being murdered or if I were fading away
in my death bed -- in other words, I can't say if, in those moments, I would
say "oh, it's better to die this way" or "this way is worse." And once I am
dead, it *is* unlikely that any opinions I may have at that point (if there
is a possibility of any! "g") will have impact on the living. But I suspect
that at the moment of my death I will have an opinion about its nature. And
I think it matters to the murderer (whether they acknowledge it or not) the
manner and nature by which they cause another to meet death -- and this is
subjective -- because I think it afects and reflects on them. To be
melodramatic, "it stains their souls," it hardens their hearts or their
conscience, it diminishes their character.

No, I think there are many who put the needs of others first -- sometimes in
minor matters, sometimes in profound matters. I've done it myself, at
times, and had others do it for me (my parents come to mind as just one
example). Nick has the heart to do this. Of course human beings can be
selfish, too, but LaCroix et all (and any murders) evince the ultimate
selfishness by promoting their own lives by appropriating the very lives of
human beings.

>
> And I think I'm veering off-topic here, so...

Well, I don't know. It seems like such a profound discussion of FKdom --
what *is* the nature of our vamps? Is Nick foolish or heroic for striving
to overcome his nature? Is LaCroix right, or an evil bastard for
interferring in Nick's efforts? But I guess this discussion does have a
terrible predeliction for veering off into religion, philosophy, morality,
general vampire lore, heck even politics, etc! "g" I'm really afraid
capitol punishment or abortion is going to get thrown into the mix!! "g"
Guess McL would really come after us with cattle-prods then! "g"

Ultimately, I suspect that these issues can't be addressed in a logical
argument, i.e. "a=b, b=c, a=c", but that the debate points must, perforce,
be subjective....so, I guess ya'll've had enough of my subjects! :o)

Twice-married police detective seeks broad-minded female companion.
I am romantic, lively, well-educated, considered attractive, with a private
income. I would welcome hearing from ladies with a well-developed
social conscience, preferably with a scientific background and an
interest in the occult. I maintain a close relationship with my
adult daughter and elderly, crotchety father, so an understanding

I agree with this, myself, actually. Both the DK & FtB examples I gave
were when Nick had been completely abstaining or, at least drastically
restricting, intake of blood of *any* kind. I just
meant to use it as an example of the questionable reliability
of the individual characters' statements. They seem to be
making opposite observations (pale vs. rosy) about the same condition.
I rather blame it on folks sometimes seeing what they want or expect to see.

Still catching up on email....

Oh, yes, in Franchesca, and it's also apparent in
Last Act (Erica & Nick's discussion of memories), and
even from the other perspective in Black Buddha ("it's
the most erotic thing I've ever experienced" -- Vachon).
So it's definitely more than a simple "I'm hungry, I feed,"
or your typical predator-prey situation.

I had a pet rock once, which I thought was cute. Does that count?
I never ate it, though.
And I can also state with a fair degree of certainty that I never
ate any of its little rock friends, neither. ;-)

On *this* list? Of course! Almost *everything* gets questioned.
That's half the fun!
(FWIW, I think they probably do.... Otherwise, why have
digestive enzymes [StF]?)

I am going to thank you on the List, Annmarie because I have something else
to say, first of all *******thanks,********* Annmarie :>D

What I wanted to say to the List is that my recovery is going much faster
with the support I have received from the List Family than it might have
otherwise.

I am ever astonished at how a television series like Forever Knight can bring
so many people together and how we help eachother when we are down.

My thanks to all, and hope I didn't miss thanking anyone privately who
wrote!! <g>

Forever Yours,

Gotta tell you guys....

I am just **loving** the responses to Laurie's query/thread. Can't seem to
come up with an ad of my own, but I wanted to say how much I am enjoying
reading the responses!!

Way to go Laurie on this one :>)

His sister for most and daughter after Human Factor. Of course she won't
speak to him after that...so how close can that relationship be?

In Purcell's Dido and Aeneas (libretto by Nahum Tate), the evil Sorceress
and her minions sing as a chorus one of the best brief descriptions of the
state of *being* evil I know:

"Destruction's our delight,
Delight our greatest sorrow..."

There are times when LaCroix behaves as if this were true.
There are times (after 1st season) when he doesn't.

Subject: Latest V4S ep

I feel like such and idiot having to do this...
When I got my new computer last week, I copied all my data to it from my old
one and lo and behold I thought I had copied my V4S file. Something got
messed up and I don't have it.
Is the new ep archived anywhere yet? I was able to get all the old ones,
but not the latest one. I haven't even gotten a chance to read it yet.
Could anyone please tell me where I could get it, or possible email it to
me? Zipped or regular would be fine.
Thanks so much.
