Came across this today.
http://latin.about.com/homework/latin/library/blnames.htm It's a very
informative article on Roman naming practices. It has charts and examples
and other goodies.

Definitely could come in handy for fic forays into LaCroix's past :)

Well, I'll agree about the cold fat...ick...but,
depending on what exactly vampires are after in the
blood, broccoli might not be so bad, if it's the
iron/hemoglobin they want. Speaking as someone who's
had severe anemia (normal hematocrit is about 35; when
they admitted me mine was 14) if you're low on iron,
broccoli could help. It really did cut some of the
nastier cravings I had. (I was in such a state right
before I collapsed I really was craving blood.) Maybe
Natalie could grind up some for her concoctions.

Would that have held true even if the girl were born out of wedlock? Even
if the father could not claim her as his get? Also, would an out-of-wedlock
son have borne his father's nomen, or his maternal grandfather's nomen?
(And how would carrying the "sperm donor's" nomen not mean that the father
had acknowledged his out-of-wedlock child?)

In a way this reminds me of a friend of mine in college. Whenever we were

was playful bickering, not mean spirited in any way. I'm not sure if it was

 >>

I'm currently doing a series of stories where Nat discovers a new unsuspected
ability in each one. The first one was The Power of Dreams.

I've had dreams that had to be deja-vu's. When it happened in real life it
was a bit freaky because I couldn't tell which one was real and which was the
dream. It was accurate down to the tiniest detail. The dialog was exactly
right, as was the location, what we were doing, wearing..... etc. EVERYTHING
was exactly the same. I was in every one of them so far.

Another really freaky thing was when I went to Toronto years ago to see Ger
in Taming of the Shrew I had hoped to see Catherine Disher and knew it was
almost a given that I would NOT. Yet some tiny little voice deep inside me
told me I would. Well... I ignored the voice, figuring it was just the
fangeek part of me getting exicted about the trip. Then during the play one
night I realize that she was there. And not only that but she was outside the
theatre when I was, and we were both in the grocery store at the same time.
If I had not been so sleepy (3 hours sleep the night before the play started
does not make for an alert person (especially when that is the ONLY sleep you
get until the plane ride home)) and distracted by my friend, I might've seen
her. I think I was the ONLY one of the group who did NOT see her. ::pout::
Then again, I missed seeing EVERY SINGLE FK actor there, outside of Ger. Who
I got a very close up view of right after the play started. And I spent a few
days kicking myself for not listening to that little voice.

All this sort of stuff makes me wonder if there are abilities we once had and
forgot how to use. Or if they are there ready for us to mature enough to be
able to handle them.

I just found a really cool web site in an email from some other list. It's
about autopsies and crime scenes, and how you can solve a crime step by step.
I think you can even view an autopsy. I haven't had a chance to poke around
the site yet, but others who have, have given it rave reviews.

I too seem to have the same fascination with coroners, forensics and the
like. It probably started with my watching of Quincy at an impressionable
age. And I've watched One West Waikiki, and just about any show with a
coroner as a major character. And of course my latest favorite show (outside
of the Discovery Channel) is CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, which looks at
crime scenes from the forensic POV rather than the one Nick and Schanke used.

Just recently I realized what keeps me out of a career in forensics (the
possibility of such a career had not really occured to me until recently) was
the part about dead bodies. LOL! They're okay to watch on tv, but I don't
know how well I'd do when faced with a real one, especially if one of the
nastier types of cases.

I think there should be a Nat and Grace faction, as long as it does NOT
become a slash one. Everyone else has a faction. Morgue Maniacs sounds like
a good title for it. As good as any other one.

Count me in! I've always been interested in forensic pathology myself--and
I'm not deterred by the sight of a body or two. Granted, my area of focus
has usually been ancient Egyptian burial practices... ;) I have one friend
studying to be a pathologist, and another working on abnormal psych and
criminology, and I absolutely devour any book either of them recommend. It's
a fascinating field.

Since we're all sharing fanfic resources, I found a really perfect
description of an autopsy written by a doctor specifically for fiction
writers wishing to make their work sound authentic:

http://www.neosoft.com/~uthman/Autop.html

I used it for a novella I wrote in an undergrad writing class. Very helpful.

Another good page, although it's written for X-Files writers it's helpful to
us as well, is on "Deep Background", and deals with determining causes of
death and other useful information:

http://www.astolat.demon.co.uk/forensic/bodies.htm

More helpful sites I dug up from my bookmark files (no wonder my family's
worried about me... ;)

http://users.aol.com/murrk/index.htm
http://www.tncrimlaw.com/forensic/
http://www-medlib.med.utah.edu/WebPath/webpath.html

If you want to get really in-depth while off-line, Taber's Cyclopedic
Medical Dictionary has been invaluable to me so far, it has handy things
like symptoms of different poisons, etc. And also, how to say "Please take

Happy viewing!

That's a good idea--I never thought about it, but FTB probably would
translate well... I don't have the ep on tape as yet though (my VCR is
jealous of the amount of time I spend on the net and is exacting its
revenge). Would you be interested in helping with the adaptation? Most of
the graphic novel work I've done so far has been historically-based, so
having a comic book fan on board would really help. Anyone else with
suggestions is of course welcome to contribute.

I've started working on a sample page for NiQ right now, I'll scan it once
I'm done... I was thinking of going colour, but black and white works
better, for me at least. Although I may do a few of my favourite scenes in
colour. ;)

Yes, but not because of Divia's name, exactly. Divia
is illegitimate, so she takes the status of her
mother. What I supposed was this: Seline could easily
have been a freedwoman of Lucius's family, or even a
slave of his who had been freed. Roman prostitutes --
the script definitely says she's the madam of a
brothel in which the Pompeiian scenes are set -- were
usually either slaves or freedwomen. Now, a freed
slave took the name of the person who freed him or
her, keeping his or her original name as a cognomen.
If a freedman married and had children, his children
had the genomen which he had received on being freed.
(The illegitmate children of a freedwoman of course
took the genomen she had acquired on being freed.)
Thereon the genomen carried down just as with the
family of the owner.

So, if Seline was a freedwoman or the descendant of a
freed slaves of Lucius's family, her full name would
be Whatever Seline or Seline Whatever (the order of
the names varied with the period and/or the person's
choice.) Which element of a name was the one used in
normal address also varied. If Seline's full name was
Divia Seline or Seline Divia, then her daughter would
have Divia as a genomen too. Seline might have decided
to call her by "Divia" even though Lucius was not
publicly acknowledging paternity.

> illegitimate offspring, I
> haven't a klew--anyone know anything about this?

Legally Roman illegitimate children didn't have a
father and were sui juris, under their own authority
as opposed to legitimate children who were under the
father's authority until his death or unless he
formally emancipated them. So, an illegitimate child
took the genomen and status of the mother. Notice that
Lucius clearly has no authority over Divia. When he
wants to see her, Seline won't let him. She couldn't
do that if Divia weren't illegitimate and a minor.

Jennifer, I think Nick would disagree. He spat out the green tea Nat

2, we find them with a toe-tag with Nat describing what has
happened to them to Nick/Schanke/Tracy) :-)

is what Mclisa is going to resemble shortly. :)

Seriously, please, guys, I post those rules every
Sunday because they are necessary for the smooth
running of a large list. They apply to all of us,
including me and Don. If necessary I will enforce
them. That means if someone keeps breaking a rule and
doesn't communicate with me when I send a note, I set
that person nopost until he or she agrees to abide by
the rules. In extreme circumstances, scofflaws may be
deleted.

This is the side of listowning I hate. I don't want to
have to do it.

So please, please, will a few of you STOP quoting more
than 4 lines of the post to which you're replying?
That's the limit. If you have a second point to
answer, then you can quote another four lines when you
get to that part.

Quoting the entire previous post is a complete no-no.

Thanks, and especially thanks to all those who have
been watching the quote limit.

Am I the only one who can't get this picture to open? I've been heartbroken
for days trying to look at it and it just will NOT open - I get a blank
screen with the angelfire logo in the corner.

I need to verify when a fan fic story of mine was written. I can't find it! I
don't have a copy that I can locate. I couldn't find it at the ftp site. I may
have overlooked it at the Ratpack's webpage. It isn't at the fkfanfic site...

Okay, where did several people read my

"Final Lullaby"???

I remember writing it, I just can't remember much about it or where in the world
it is archieved. It isn't one of my adult stories (that I remember).

Help!

Well, I get a nice picture of his eyes -- it's cropped off for me from the
bridge of his nose down! I don't know why.... But what I see is good. "g"

If there's no scrollbar enabling you to scroll down, try toggling your
