If I get permission from the authors I will upload it to the ftp site
until we find out what is going on with the web site. Lisa, if I
quoted too much the last posts I am sorry as I did not know how to stop
the quotes as I am telneting in from work and have to figure out how to
keep it from quoting the post I am replying to.

Good news!!! I just reached the fiction site!!!! ( www.fkfanfic.com ) It
took it longer than usual to come up, but it did show up. I use Internet
Explorer and I know that sometimes sites are just still in the program's
temp. files, so I hit refresh and the site came right back.

I tried to get to it by clicking on a link from another FK fan site, and
then got the "Page not found error." Then I deleted *that* addy, and typed
www.fkfanfic.com in by hand. Again I got the "Page not found error", but
when I clicked refresh (on the page-not on my browser toolbar) the page came
right back up again.

Perhaps there is just some web confusion, with rerouting of servers and
such, due to the WA state earthquake yesterday. Seattle is another
"Silicone Valley" area with all the businesses it has dedicated to
technology that this could be the reason for all the errors.

Great to hear you have a back up in case something goes truly wrong though.

Brenda asked:

> Was washing clothing that common in those times?

Yes and no. As you mentioned, the more expensive and less durable outer
garments wouldn't be laundered very often, if ever. But undergarments,
especially for someone of Nick's station who could afford more than one
or two, were generally washed frequently and thoroughly.

> One keeps hearing how
> bathing was a once-a-year (or twice in a lifetime?) proposition

There's actually quite a bit of debate about this. Sometimes you hear
that bathing in general was considered unhealthy, sometimes that bathing
in hot water was considered unhealthy, sometimes that the whole thing is
bunk and the upper classes in particular bathed quite regularly. I
doubt there will ever be agreement...although, oddly enough, the
evidence I've come across in recent years seems to indicate that the
bathing was more frequent in the medieval era, and actually came to be
regarded as unhealthy in the Renaissance.

In any case, if and when scrubbing one's person was looked down upon, it
was about fear of disease or weakening of one's constitution, not a
disregard for cleanliness. They may not have been as manic about it as
modern Americans, regarding either their bodies or their clothing; but
well-kept clothing (including scrupulously clean undergarments) *was* a
major status marker.

> Also, sweat deteriorates fabrics rather quickly. Better your sweat
> should stain a relatively-easily replaceable shift of locally-grown fiber

Bingo. Especially when said shift could withstand a fair amount of
boiling and scrubbing, so that visible stains probably didn't much
develop. Linen is seriously tough stuff.

Yep, I'm replying to my own message...

I, Teresita wrote on Thursday, March 01, 2001 @ 9:10 AM (PST):

False alarm, folks. I'm *really* sorry about that.

Boy, do I feel sheepish... Baa, baa... Mary had a little lamb, little
lamb, little lamb... etc.

After sending out what I thought was such terrific news, I realized I hadn't
tried to reach anything, ie: stories, from the site itself. I have just
tried to access other pages from there (the fic site), and got nothing but
error pages.

I have to agree with the others who had written to the before me, that
something is going on with site. I did all the checking I thought I needed
to do, and now I realize that the frontpage of the Fic site probably *is* in
my temp. files (or elsewhere) after all.

Again, please accept my apologies for getting people's hopes up. (Now I
remember why I usually keep my big mouth shut here, and just lurk instead.)

Mea Culpa,

Mel may have moved the site from one server to another server which means
a new IP address and it would take awhile for the information to be
replicated around the internet. Shew!

Hi all,

This is something I thought about on my daily 1/4 mile hike to the mail box.
Okay, now I must confess I don't know all that much about how the Internet
works but I have picked up a few book just to figure out what everyone is
talking about sometimes, so If I have this totally wrong I'm sorry. If I
understand correctly the fkfanfic site is located on a WebServer somewhere.
Could that somewhere have been in the Seattle area? After all I wasn't very
long after we heard about the earthquake that people start asking about the
fkfanfic site.

Just a thought from a newbie/lurker.

Subject: site not found

There are several reasons why the error "site not found"
can come up. One is it's busy, millions of people are
trying to access it all at the same time and the server
can't handle it. Another is that the domain name expired.
Yet another is that the server is down for whatever reason.

Hopefully the domain name was renewed. If not, maybe one
of us can grab it so TPTB don't! I'm sure there are many
listees who would be willing to help work on a new fanfic
site (myself included.)

Presumably it would depend on what they decided when they met their
micro-guide at the gate? (g)

I noticed that the MSF site wasn't working either just just yesterday, and
it was working a couple of days before (www.msf.org); not working now). So
my suspicion is that the domain name servers have recently updated their
thingies and have erased from their files every name that hasn't been
renewed. If Mel can't be contacted, can someone else hastily renew the
domain name so that the site will still work?

I had the same thought -- I've been feeling this quivering frisson of
anticipation ever since the notice that we would be getting the next V4 ep
(wherein there was some mention that it would be posted at Mel's archive). I
keep trying to suppress it, not wanting to be disappointed in my hope for
something so looong desired.... "g"

I ran a domain name availability check on doteasy.com, but that site reports
that the domain name fkfanfic.com is taken. So perhaps it hasn't expired,
but the site is under construction?

WHEW!!!!!!!!!!!

After a scary Not Found error message the site came up and so did the
stories!

Let this be a lesson of warning to us all---Major FK sites that have the
sacred status in our eyes need a BACKUP!

What if the domain had been lost?
What if something (God forbid!) dire happened to Mel? Steph? Ain't none of
us immune to accident or other misfortune, either.

Sure, one hopes that Mel has everything already up on backup files and I
understand the desire to be in total control of her own work, but what good
does that do the rest of us if she is too busy or unavailable to re-upload
them?

Steph, did I read correctly that you saved all of the pages, categories as
well as the stories? I think what you have done on the ftp site is
wonderful, but it cannot be denied that it is easier to browse for a certain
story title (for instance) on Mel's than on the ftp.

I would like to add my hopes that Mel is updating
her site. (Her organization and separating of
stories by various topics are great!)

Thanks for listening!

Uh... by clicking on www.fkfanfic.com ? This was the second time after I
read the awful news. After that everything has been hunky-dory even for
stories I *know* I have not read in a long time.

Try this to get within a category, also try Refreshing.
