I have a comment & related questions:
#1-- remember that at the home (?) of LC'a mistress Selene & Divia-- there
was also on display the bust of General Lucius-- any reason that should have
been there-- unless LC had brought it along with him to 'show off' there
during his visit? Or could the 'Welcome Home Triumphant General' Party even
been held at LC's home or his vacation home?

#2-- ummmmm... how do we know the occupation of Divia's mother? When I had
first seen her and flashbacks to LC's mortal life & re-birth as a vampire at
Pompeii-- I assumed that Selene and LC had been lovers and possibly even
thought it possible that she had been married to someone other than LC
--references by LC to 'your daughter' and it apparently being a surprise
that Divia knew that LC was her father. I thought that Selene was of the
'upper class' and also thought originally that maybe the 'party' was being
held at Selene's home-- she tells LC that she has "guests to attend to". How
is it then that folks say that Selene was a Madame and ran a 'House of
Prostitution'-- I was just wondering...

First, it was common practice for a Roman to display busts of the prominent
man to whom he or she was a client. This was an established relationship. It
was impossible to be a man of importance or status without being a patron,
if only to his family's freed slaves and their descendants. Since Roman
prostitutes were usually slaves, if have an idea that Seline might have been
a slave freed by Lucius's family, or the daughter of one. (Note: Roman free
women could become prostitutes but it was unusual.) Second, there was no
disgrace to a Roman man in being the patroness of a brothel owner, or in
being known to frequent the place. For Seline (so spelled in the script,
although it's wrong for the period, which would be Selene) to have Lucius's
bust in her house would be like the modern habit of displaying signed
photographs of prominent patrons at a business.. Besides, this particular
house is clearly run as if it were a private residence.

    >#2-- ummmmm... how do we know the occupation of Divia's mother?

It's in the script that the scene is a brothel, the women in the scene are
prostitutes, and that Seline is the madame. The only visual clue, as it came
across on film, was something that you have to already know about to catch.
Seline is wearing a red toga -- the required badge of a prostitue. Togas
normally were for men and the red is obvious.

Another giveaway, if you know something about Roman law, is that Seline is
able to prevent Lucius from seeing Divia. Roman women of high status simply
didn't have acknowledged illegitmate children. So Seline cannot ever have
been Lucius's wife and Divia is illegitimate. Roman fathers of legitimate
children had absolute power over them. The mother had none. Seline is able
to tell Lucius he can't see Divia, something she could only have done if, in
law, Divia had no father because her mother wasn't married.

Btw, I think the bust is a new aquisition because it attracts comment. The
men don't appear to have seen it before.

Another thing I've been meaning to mention is that Roman men of such status
as being in the senate (which Lucius has to be in order to be a legate, or
general) were required to live in Rome. He probably does have a holiday
villa in the region of Pompeii-Herculaneum. It was a status symbol like a
house in the Hamptons for a rich and successful New Yorker. Besides, a
senator had to own a substantial amount of land in Italy. But it's most
unlikely that he normally lives at Pompeii when not with his legion.

Subject: Music Video Saga...the end? (please?)

Recap for those who may have missed it: made a music vid. Wanted to
share a Quicktime movie file with those of you who are interested. Have
had the devil's own time finding a place to put it where you could get
at it.

Also, got choked up several times in the process of capturing and
editing footage. Whimper warnings are in effect...Nick&NatPackers, this
means you! ;-)

I have to confess I cast unwarranted aspersions on Crosswinds. Not only
do they not have spontaneously-vanishing-account problems, they're a
little *too* competent! Seems they take their "no copyrighted
materials" rule VERY seriously--so seriously that my account was
unceremoniously zapped within hours of the vid being uploaded. Fallout
from the Napster mess, I s'pose. While it's annoying to me personally
(hey, okay, derivative work, I'm down with that...but dadgummit, it was
still WORK!), I gotta admire their efficiency.

If anyone has been in the market for a free file storage/sharing server,
and wants observations, feel free to email me. I've tried more than my
share of them this weekend! (I think the final count is 5.) As a
result, Val's Poor Orphan Music Vid now resides at:

http://www.juston.com/public/wiliqueen/onceuponadream.mov

Word to the wise: when they say on their front page that their site is
best viewed with Netscape 4.51 or higher, or IE 4.x or 5.x, they're not
kidding. I hadn't bothered to upgrade in a while, and almost went on
to try the *next* server on the list because what I was using until this
afternoon (Netscape 4.08) wouldn't read the public URL page properly.
Since I was the first place I had managed to successfully upload the
darn thing to, I was not a happy camper! But after upgrading my browser
 I had no trouble.

Also, this sucker is just over 30 MB. Best I could do and still be able
to see/hear anything. Plus it *is* a free site, therefore slow (and
yes, I'm profoundly spoiled by having my web pages on Dreamhost...wish I
could afford to add sufficient disk space there!), so allot download
time accordingly.

Haven't tested the download on a PC yet, but I do know the movie file
itself works fine there. If anyone who's interested still has trouble
getting it, let me know; I'm still hoping to be able to access my Xoom
account directory sometime before I retire.

One nice person has already tried it out on a PC for me, and no go.
*pout* So if you're on a PC and you get two frames with the JustOn logo

fix it or find another place...

Okay, this one seems more promising--not even minor problems with signup
or upload. Downside is you have to sign up for an account in order to
get shared files. With any luck, tho, that means they won't have the
download limit JustOn does.

Unless I hear from folks who can't get this one to work (which, to be
frank, at this point I fully expect, so don't feel bad!), I'm going to
take a break from looking for alternatives. Hopefully Xoom will get
their act together soon, and I'll finally have access to my 500 MB of
space there.

Subject: Television Series VHS Cover Sheet for Forever Knight

Greetings my fellow listees,

Last Tuesday, August 22, I was cruising the Internet
and ran across this site called "Dragon Citings"
http://www.scifi2k.com run by Crimson Black
( a.k.a. Tim Blackwell ) that had TV & Movie VHS
cover sheets free to download.

I noticed there was no Forever Knight so I put in
a request for one. Well to make a long story short
using the color photos and slides from my 3rd
season press kit we now have one!

Tim finished it today and has it featured on his
main page. Go check it out at http://www.scifi2k.com

Hiya, Kathy. I'm guessing you didn't get my private response on the

Valerie had a hard time with her file I put it on one of my web sites. You can
now see it at

http://www.nimr.org/valerie/onceuponadream.mov

Now it is large so it will take a long time to download, but it is well worth
the wait. She also said I could try converting it so I may play around with it
and convert it to a Real Player file to make it smaller. IF I am able to do
that I will put that on the site as well.

Again, this is great. She put a lot of time in this.

Good morning.
Here are the rules for Forkni-l.

>>For information on managing your subscription and on listserv commands,
>>please see Don Fasig's page
>>http://www.geocities.com/Athens/7139/fk-lists.htm

1. No flames on list. FLAMERS MAY BE SET NOPOST. THE NOPOST MAY BE
PERMANENT.

2. Please don't quote more than four lines of a previous post
in replying. If you have more than one point to answer, then you may quote
the relevant four lines for that point also.

3. Limit sigs to 6 lines. This includes all information, decoration
quotations and blank lines. Your name and address count as part of
the six. If you sign your name on a separate line above the body of
text, your name and the blank line or lines between count as part of
the six line limit. If you have one of those services that insists
on putting an advertising tag on the end of posts, don't worry. I
realize you can't control that and it doesn't count as part of your
sig.

4. Please don't send to the whole list when you are only talking to the
person who wrote the post you are answering.

5. Advertising on list is on a case by case basis. Please consult the
listowners, Lisa McDavid, mclisa@m....... or Don Fasig,
phase3@g....... for permission.

6. This list is for the discussion of Forever Knight. Cast, crew, staff
and producers in connection with what they're doing now or have done in
the past are ok. Vampires in general are _NOT_ ok except in relation
to Forever Knight.

7. Off-topic posts are not allowed, no matter what they are about or
how urgent the warning may appear. If you have an off-topic post which
you think should appear on the list, ask one of the owners for permission.

8. The private lives of the cast are not a discussion topic. Occasionally
one of the fan club presidents will make an announcement, but other than
that, we leave the cast their privacy.

9. Con announcements must come from con officials or a designated
liaison and must be kept brief. Cons are only announced on list if there
is a connection to FK.

10. Only fan club presidents or other designated spokespeople may
make announcements of future projects for FK cast, crew and staff,
before said projects have been released or written about in the
media.

11. No role-playing on Forkni-l. This includes no character names as
pseudonyms or posing as a character.

12. Each subscriber is limited to five posts per day on Forkni-l.

I'll be happy to explain the reason for any of the above if asked.

Thanks!

Mine is still downloading so that is a good sign, hope it works <g> thanks
Valerie!!
**PS** Well, shoot, it downloaded but now it won't do anything the Quicktime
logo just sits there, and it took an hour to download at 56K, too <g>
OK, You know you have been thinking about Forever Knight too much when.....

You go bowling (haven't been in 20 years or more <g>) with your SO, his two
brothers for a combination birthday party since they were all born in
August.......

..........then, you share this with one of your FK e-friends <wave, wave> who

HUH, that did not come out quite the way I planned <sigh>, it was funnier
when I read the email from my friend <waves again>!!

Anyone think that new opening page (rather nifty, IMHO) for Forever Knight at
the Sci Fi Channel site is a good sign they might be thinking of bringing it
back.....? Here is the URL in case anyone missed it (I got it from the KoC

Subject: Lucius Roman

Monica asks:
>his roman ancestry canon, though? or assumed? would he have to be roman to
>be a general? anyone know how it works?

He not only had to be a Roman citizen, he had to be sufficiently rich (I've
forgotten the precise amount but it was the equivalent of the modern
millionaire with all of the qualifying amount invested in land in Italy.)
Then he has to be a senator, which meant one of a very limited class of men
elected to the senate. This is because a Roman general, called a legate, was
technically a member of the senate delegated to go and take charge of a
legion in the Roman army. Under the empire this was evolving more toward
what we would recognize as career army or navy, but it was still true that
the senate appointed the legates from their own ranks. No matter how fine an
officer you might have been during the service that was usual for Roman
young men, you were never going to be a legate unless you were rich enough
and could get elected to the senate. Normally the emperor made the actual
choice but he would not have done so outside the senatorial ranks unless he
wanted a revolt. There were some things the senate would not tolerate.

Incidentally, I asked John Kapelos at a con, after he kept referring to
Lucius as "the emperor," if the character had originally been written as the
emperor. He said yes. (For those who've forgotten, JK directed A More
Permanent Hell.)

Thank goodness they changed this, since the emperor at the time of the
Pompeii disaster was Titus, generally considered one of the best emperors,
politically and in his personal character, Rome ever had. Besides, of course
he didn't die or disappear in the erruption. :)
