especially since little Lucius would have been just the right age to be one of
the boys who "entertained" Caligula in his villa on Capri. Read Suetonius for
some idea of those "entertainments" -- this is, after all, a PG-013 list, so I
can't mention it here. <g>
That just might explain *a lot*, especially the torturing-the-old-guy scene.

I knew Tiberius liked to...um..."have the boys over" when he was in self-exile
on Capri, but I didn't know Caligula made the same use of his predecessor's
villa. I guess he picked up some nasty habits when visiting his great-uncle.

I don't know if I really picture Lucius having significant, long term contact
with Caligula, but in my personally created history for him, I wouldn't be
surprised that his father failed to protect him from predation by abusers. I
imagine (for myself) that LaCroix developed that "dog eat dog" and "look out for
number one" mentality at the hands of a cold, indomitable father who constantly
challenged his son to stand up for himself and look out for himself. To
reinforce this lesson, I can see him ruthlessly abandoning Lucius, at an early
age, to the bullying and abuse of others, as well as treating him harshly
himself to "toughen him up." He probably made statements such as, "You're
either a Survivor or a Victim." I can also hear him saying, "If you can't fight
for yourself, you can't be a man," and, "Strike first or be struck down." Under
such a harsh upbringing, he would either learn to be tough as nails or break
down completely. It's obvious in which direction our General developed.

As far as considering his coming into contact with Caligula, I wonder what level
of nobility Lucius' family occupied? I rather see them as being minor nobility,
because that ties in with my perception of him fighting his way up to the top.

Subject: Ben Bass updates

Talked to Ben last night, here's the latest on his appearances:

"Stargate SG1" - Showtime Friday Sept 22nd 9PM. Episode entitled "The
Curse."

"Back in Black" - anthology series (still digging for info on this one)

"Night Visions" - Fox, Global, ITV - Fridays at 9PM. This series is
listed in Fox's fall line up. In the eerie style of The Twilight Zone,
this gripping anthology series creeps from horror to psychological drama
to supernatural adventure, never letting up until the final bizarre plot
twist. Each vignette plays upon basic human fears, but will linger in
memory long after the credits roll. Noah Wyle, Brook Shields, and Aiden
Quinn are just a few of the stars you'll see in this series.

"Big Sound" - listed on Canadian Global and CTV as premiering in January
of 2001. May premier earlier in the U.S. Described to be like the Larry
Sanders Show floating around the music industry. Canadian superstar
singers Bryan Adams and BareNaked Ladies are set to have cameo
appearances.

Additionally, the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie "The 6th Day" is slated for
release November 17th. Ben is in the beginning of the movie and has, as
he describes it, some good moments with Arnie in the opening portion of
the movie.

I'll try and get episode information on the above series when I'm out
there next month.

it's a shame TPTB don't read the series and convert them
into the new scripts, would be excellent viewing

Is there a new web site for the Virtual 4th season or will they still be
posted on Mel's site?

Jean, how did this happen? IIRC, you were told you had permission to publish.

If list members are upset by Sony's actions, I think they should write Sony
and be POSITIVE-- no matter how much that hurts!! Tell them that you hope
that this newfound interest in FK means that they will bring us some
*authorized* novels, because we've proved we'd be happy to buy them.

If you want to give 'til it _really_ hurts, accompany your letter with your
copy of On Holy Ground-- it would be a very effective way of showing them
you mean what you say. It proves you've actually paid the money once, but
you want to support *authorized* novels. (This is purely a political ploy,
and is most definitely *not* meant as a slight to Jean or her novel--it's
just a way of upping the ante.)

If you can't bring yourself to mail the book, or don't have a copy, do
write Sony a letter to tell them how disappointed you are that you can't
buy On Holy Ground OR a new authorized FK novel. Tell them which of the old
authorized novels you've got, and how you made a special effort to find them.

Here's Sony's address, from the KtK posting:

Um, I don't presume to speak for Jean -- but Sony has dropped some rather
impressive threats on her head. Pointing out to their legal department that
there's a thriving, illegal, copyright-violating fan writing community just
might cause them to stomp on us. We exist at their sufferance, you know, and
it conceivably could change.

I don't want to be alarmist, but think of what Disney does to enforce their
intellectual property rights. Sony might not care that we sell zines for charity
and take the view that they must protect their copyright, no matter what our
motivation is, and no matter that they're not really exploiting FK themselves.
They might force us to close down our FK websites with all the (pirated) images
and sounds. I guess I just don't want to poke a stick into the beehive, is all.

Alarmed, Nancy Kaminski

Hooray! That's great news, and I hope there can be a next season after that.
I'd offer to join the committee if I wasn't moving. Also, from what I've
heard about the phone company up in Indy, I anticpate a delay in getting my
phone line and hence being able to come back on to the net.

Oh, dear. I'm thinking stronger language, but have to censor myself.

Jean, I am very sorry to hear this. I see the legal implications, but it's
still infuriating.

Sony, if you're listening in, you could have prevented all this by licensing
further novelizations.

Sony -

If you don't want FK... LET IT GO!!! It appears to us that you have no
intentions whatsoever of doing anything with FK ever again.. and yet you won't
consider releasing it.

On another note... I don't know if anyone's mentioned it before, but Sony
apparently has pulled the FK stuff from their site. The old URL comes back as
Not Found.

Subject: On Holy Ground & Sony

First and foremost, heart-felt thanks to all the listmembers for the support
both on and off list. I'm overwhelmed in more ways than one! And I'll try to
answer as many of the questions as I can with this message.

ON HOLY GROUND's 200 copy print run was nearly sold out, and a planned
reprint will now have to be canceled. I am legally constrained from selling
any remaining copies and will have to return any funds arriving in the PO box
for same. So thanks to all who asked if they could still squeak by and get
one, but I'm afraid I can't take the risk.

Am I in trouble with Sony? In a word -- yep. Could be trouble big time if
they decide to be nasty about it and not accept my word that the book has
been pulled out of print/distribution and that it garnered no profits as it
was sold at cost, with any excess donated to charity. That last may be
particularly hard for corporate goons (and lawyers in particular) to believe,
as they can't comprehend ever doing *anything* without a profit motive. In 30
years of fanzine publishing, all of it media-related, this is the first time
I have ever run into this personally. I have *heard* of other zines getting
slapped with cease & desist orders, and in every case, nothing more was
pursued once they ceased and desisted. So please pray (or think good
thoughts, or whatever) that Sony will have the same attitude!

Lastly, I will not be in any more hot water than I already am if you refuse
to relinquish your copy of OHG, so by all means hang onto it. Just please
don't send Sony a "nyah-nyah" letter telling them so. As McLisa (and LaCroix)
both like to say, *that* could be trouble.

I'll try to keep the list apprised of any further developments, and thanks
again for all your caring and support. It really means a lot right now.

Love,

I'm so sorry, Jean, for myself as well as you. Mail has never been my
milieu. If OHG has been available online, like through Amazon or some such,
I'd have it already. If you do get in trouble with Sony, can we help? Can
we write them and tell them how much money FK raises for charity, and that
this was certainly part of that? Can we write them proactively and thank
them for being understanding and not taking further action? You tell us,
Jean. You know we'll try to help.

Subject: Re: Canada &Vamp 'Diets' & 'Donors'

Sorry, ya'll, but my post from yesterday morning did not show up
here as it had been sent and somehow from writing it up in Microsoft Word
and moving it to HOTMAIL looked ok, but then from HM to FK-L
it got messed up-- so besides it showing up here in a form not easy
to read, a couple of things did not make it to FK-L-- {{{even my sig got
messed up in the process}}} Hope ya'll don't mind if I just add what was
missing-- and I will try to keep it short :) and PLEASE, ListMommy, don't
get upset-- I'm not reposting the whole thing and
have tried to cut off a lot but leave enough of the context to make sense.
Hope that's ok! Thought that maybe the 'second' part might
be of interest--

The beginning should have read:
First--
I want to thank all those who were so kind as to respond to my questions
about 'Canada and Vamp "Diets" & "Donors"' I asked about a week or so ago--
***[missing part] those who answered both on and off-list! VERY informative!
THANKS!!! :) I hope some of you don't mind if I contact you off-list for
more info.

Second--
regarding that post and some of the responses...
<snip> From what I gather from FK --and I'll admit that we do not
always SEE this-- in FK becoming a vampire is basically a 2 part process
[#1--mortal being almost completely drained and #2--the
'almost drained' mortal ingesting vamp blood-- not have to be
blood from vamp who originally took most of mortal's blood]<snip>
Janette tells Nick in IWR that she always takes too much <snip>
Also, Nick's wife Alyssa died after Nick drained her and before
he gave her his blood-- either he waited too long to give her
his blood and maybe even had 'taken too much'--
***[missing part] -- LC refers to both [reasons why Nick did
not succeed in making Alyssa a vampire]. Both in 'Crazy Love'
the merchant's daughter, and Nat in LK, I believe LC tells Nick,
after Nick ALMOST drained both women, to either complete the
process-- i.e. give them his blood-- or let them die-- I presume
that they would simply die from losing too much blood and not
become vamps. Even with Alexandra in 'Fatal Mistake' I truly
believe that she would have eventually died and not become a
vampire unless LaCroix had given her his vampire blood. And in
'Bad Blood', Janette tells Nick that Liam 'did not taste enough
vampire blood' to become a vampire.
