Subject: Willing to Trade Highlander, Forever Knight,
et al for Missing Buffy ep???

Hello again all!

Many, MANY thanks for so many here helping me find my "missing" stuff, you
guys are **great!!** <waving madly and throwing flowers all around.....>

Now I have a new desparate search going on......I am missing the episode of
(yes I will relate it to Highalnder and Forever Knight, hang in there, it
might be worth it, who knows <lol> --writing to two lists at once <g>) Buffy
the Vampire Slayer (BTVS) where Angel comes back from Hell. Buffy drops her
silver Claddagh ring on the floor of the Church where Angel used to <ahem>
"live" before Buffy sent him off to Hell, and **POOF** he reappears from
there **sans clothing.** I didn't realize I was missing it until I was trying
to send it to a friend, now I need it for me and so I can send it to my
friend <g>. I am also interested in getting the entirety of BTVS Seasons One
and Two since the person I had a deal with for them last year wasn't able to
get them to me.......EP is fine on Season's One and Two but I would prefer SP
(convert from EP to SP is fine too) on the Angel-Coming-Back-From-Hell ep. I
am not sure if it is the third ep of the third Season "Faith, Hope and
Trick," since David B. is listed in the cast in my ep guide here or the
fourth "Beauty and the Beasts," since ep guide says that's when Buffy finds
out. Heck, for all I know it could have been in the first or second ep of
Season 3 ("Anne" and "Dead Man's Party," respectively......)

In any case, I am certainly willing to cover tape replacement and shipping
costs, but here is my list again (and the Highlander/Forever Knight
connection <g>) that has expanded some of what I can offer in trade:
Highlander The Series (have ***all*** European episodes in boxed sets and a
special filter machine for dubbing them), "The Best of Highlander" boxed set
including all of the "Highlander: Under The Kilt" stuff, Highlander Movies
(have all 3 "Director's Cuts," on VHS <HL2 "Renegade Version"), also have the
*first* HL movie on DVD and the ability to make a tape from DVD), also have
fairly good copies of HL movies NON-Director's Cuts with some interesting
differences (i.e.: The Planet Zeist ::::::shudder and LOL:::::::::: in HL 2).
Highlander: The Raven Episodes (off air American versions, pretty decent
quality on SP <2 hour> tapes; the only one that would be third generation
from me would be "The Frame" as I got it from 2 wonderful listmembers
<waving, waving>. Then there's Forever Knight (have Canadian versions, and
for Season One that means more footage per ep; <--they are not perfect but
are also on high quality SP tapes--yup have every episode). Also have
Highlander Bloopers (2 sets), some Highlander short tapes that came with my
boxed HL sets, and Forever Knight Bloopers and some FK fan-created music
videos that are pretty cool, IMHO, {g} (<--both also not perfect but not bad
). I have lots of other Sci-Fi and such, but many things remain unsorted and
unlabelled, so I'd better not list them here.....welllllll here's a partial
list: Star Trek from the beginning to now, including the movies and bloopers
from the original series and the first season of Next Gen, Red Dwarf 1-8 and
both sets of bloopers from Red Dwarf, all of "V" on pro tapes, All of Twin
Peaks (at EP, though, excpet a couple I bought to fill in my collection)
including the movies, All of "The Prisoner" (but also EP) All of "Angel" from
this past season (not labelled yet) most of Season Three of Buffy and all of
season four (also ALL not labelled yet) plus a bunch of other miscellaneous
stuff like Highlander and Forever Knight Alumni movies and guest shots on TV
show (Adrian Paul, Peter Wingfield and Christopher Lambert from Highalnder;
Geraint Wyn Davies <lots!!>, Nigel Bennett, Ben Bass and a few others from
FK). If you think I might have something, ask me :) OH, and I have about
half of the HL animated eps on EP, but they are kinda fuzzy (many moons from
now I will have all the anim. HL eps <waves some more {g} >), also have all
of Star Trek: The Animated Series on EP, also kind of fuzzy........

So, once again if anyone here (turns out "here" and the "Forum" has been the
best place to ask) can help me, please respond **off-list** of course

to: mccelt2000@a.......

and I will answer just ASAP. There is also a hyperlink to my e-mail address
after my sig.

Thank you yet again and **very much** for your time!!

Subject: Sexuality and FK

My cousin's book, "Alternate Channels: The Uncensored Story of Gay and
Lesbian Images on Radio and Television -- 1930s to the Present" was
recently published by Ballantine Books (ISBN 0-345-41243-5). In it, and in
the talk he gave at his first book signing (this past Saturday), he notes:

Now consider the year 1996... That year, the syndicated and
USA cable series _Forever Knight_ included among its regulars
        a bisexual woman vampire...

I asked Steve about it after the signing, and from the research he'd done,
the "bisexual woman vampire" in question was Janette, and that Deb had
stated in an interview that there was a particular episode starting with
which she was told to play Janette as bisexual. Could anyone tell me which
episode this was?

Subject: Bixexuality of Janette

I don't recall an interview with that statement, although I have by no means
read everything ever printed on FK. :) (Yes, I really do have a real life
<g>). However, I personally heard Deb say at the second Dead of Winter Con
that she thought Janette was bi. This was in general conversation rather
than in a panel or a question and answer session.

My guess would be that the episode might be A Fate Worse Than Death. I have
always thought I saw more than just empathy in Janette's attitude toward the
present-day prostitute whom she was going to bring across (I can't recall
the character's name).

Subject: 3rd season woman bi vampire?

Barbara Bell quotes her cousin Steve as saying in his book Alternate
Channels:

>Now consider the year 1996... That year, the syndicated and
USA cable series _Forever Knight_ included among its regulars
        a bisexual woman vampire...>

I just answered on the topic of Janette as bi. Then I realized -- it was the
3rd season of FK that was both syndicated and on USA in first run at the
same time. USA insisted that Janette wasn't sexy enough and tried to reduce
her to a recurring character instead of a regular, whereupon Deb felt
insulted (and/or the union objected; I've heard both versions) and refused
to take a reduction in status. It _was_ an insult. In the 3rd season there
was only one recurring female vampire regular, Urs. I'm not sure she was
technically a regular -- there is a difference. Ben Bass as Vachon was
actually a recurring character rather than a regular.

Of course it's possible that Urs was supposed to be played as bi, but I
never have thought so.

Barbara, if your cousin didn't watch FK, is it possible that he meant
Janette and got the seasons mixed up? Anyway, it's a fascinating piece of
information and thank you for telling us about it.

Knight School
Episode: Dance By the Light of the Moon
Prerequisites: None

We open on a man walking through a condemned building. He has a package in
his hand. A woman calls to him and he approaches her, kissing her
passionately. She asks him about how it felt to be a thief...a second
later, a guy slips a string around his throat and chokes him to death. She
kisses this new man and asks him how it felt to kill. He admits he liked it
and she kisses him again, slipping a knife into his back. Casually, she
walks away.

At the station, Schanke and Nick are discussing Burkhart (the second guy);
apparently he was a cop, and a good one at that. Stonetree is not pleased
with this turn of events because they were good friends. We find out the
first guy's name is Ben Crawford, a corporate accountant, who also appeared
to be a 'good' man. Stonetree tells Nick to dig as deep as he has to, to
find out why Burkhart did it...he wonders how a good man can turn bad like
that and it leads into a flashback...

Nick (when he was mortal) is celebrating from a battle (probably) and he
sees Janette at the other end of the room, who whispers, "How bad to you
want me?"

Back in the present, Nat is conducting the autopsy and tells Nick and
Schanke about the perfume on the bodies...the same perfume that she happens
to be wearing, called "Provocateur". She also tells them that the lipstick
she found on the victims is different, the base is from Taiwan.

Schanke gets a call from Patrice who had been running the phone records of
both victims and they find out they both called a strip club called Jillies.
Patrice gets in a huff about Schanke off handedly calling her "Hun" and he
complains about it, "Gee, you can't call anybody 'honey' nowadays". As they
leave to check out the club, Nick plants a kiss on Nat's head and says,
"Bye, Hun." (Lol)

At the club, Schanke is very distracted by the dancers and Nick shakes him
out of it by saying "Myra" in his ear, and he tries to shake it off. Nick
talks to the manager and finds out both victims had been in the club
recently. As they talk a new girl comes on stage named "Miss Parisse". She
dances and Nick watches, seemingly entranced by what he sees. The manager
mentions that both victims liked her, too, and Nick flashes to when he saw
Janette again.

"Miss Parisse" introduces herself as Anne Foley and Nick questions her in
her dressing room. While she is changing, Nick takes the opportunity to get
some lipstick samples from her dresser. She doesn't tell him much, but she
makes an impression on Nick nonetheless.

Outside Nick and Schanke talk about the case. A stripper comes over and
starts to dance near Schanke. He watches wistfully and describes his
fantasy girl, plaid skirt, knee socks and Martha Brecker. Schanke asks Nick
if they (women) know what effect they have on men and leads Nick into a
flashback with Janette; she is kissing him and telling him that he needs to
surrender to the darkness, and continues to ask how bad does he want her.

The next evening, back at the loft, Nick's alarm goes off and he goes
downstairs, opening the shutters some. The sun pours in before his feet and
he stares at it.

Sometime later Schanke shows up at the loft and tells Nick that Crawford's
boss had been investigating him for embezzling from one of the clients.
Schanke mentions that "Working with you is hazardous to my health," and that
he isn't going to even look in the 'fridge because "red wine is just not
going to cut it now." Then he changes his mind and heads toward the fridge
and Nick stops him, saying, "I'm all out." (Good save!)

The phone rings and Schanke begs off, so Nick goes in in his place. At the
coroner, Nat tells Nick that both lipstick samples are from the same place,
so there's a good chance they are linked. He heads off to find Miss Foley,
and follows her through town. She pulls into an alley, and Nick drives by,
parking in front of her apartment. As she makes her way to her apartment,
Nick flies up and lands on her balcony. She doesn't seem surprised to see
him and later says, "I didn't realize the service elevator went up this
far."

They talk and Nick flashes back to being with Janette again, asking him
"Brave crusader, defender of the cross, who are you really?"

Nick tells Miss Foley that she is a suspect in the crime and she mentions
"You are looking for the murderer's murderer," and Nick says it's an
interesting distinction, since they didn't release that information to the
press. She knows they got her then, so she sets out more earnestly to
seduce Nick.

She starts to do this, and Nick flashes back to Janette. Back and forth,
past, present. Anne tells Nick she wants him to steal Burkhart's
casebook...she's almost hypnotizing him into doing it. (I imagine it would
be if he were mortal.)

Later, at the station, Schanke is irritated that Nick seems to be getting in
good with the main suspect. He mentions a "case notebook" that is missing.
Nick pays attention and finds out that Stonetree has it at his house. He
gives Nick his apartment key and tells him where to find the book. He takes
off.

Nick goes to the morgue and Nat is very bitter about Nick's current
obsession. She tells him she found out about three other murders in the
past four years. She is angry at his faraway look and takes off in a huff.

Nick brings the book to Anne, they kiss passionately and she burns the book.
They kiss some more (surprisingly, Nick doesn't vamp out during all of
this), and she asks Nick, "Wouldn't it feel good to do something far, far
worse?"

Back at the Station, Nick tells Stonetree that he couldn't find the book at
his house, so it's missing now. Schanke arrives tells Nick that there were
four murders in Buffalo and Anne was a stripper at a club they frequented.
Nick suggests they talk to Anne before going to Stonetree, so they go to her
house. Nick is acting really flaky here, btw.

They arrive and Anne's house is dark. They look for her and Nick slips
away, unnoticed. Schanke finally sees Anne, standing there in a corner.
She is wearing a plaid skirt and knee socks and starts to seduce Schanke. A
few seconds later, a cord comes around his neck and he chokes. Nick drops
him on the floor. They kiss and Nick starts to ask her how it felt to kill
Burkhart. She tells him it felt good when she slipped the knife into him.
He stops her then, and shows he is wearing a wire. She screams, "Kill him,"
and another guy shoots at Nick. He drops briefly and they guy ushers Anne
out of the room. Nick and Schanke verify that each other are okay, and then
take off after the two. Schanke is shooting at the guy and Nick is going
after Anne, who is climbing the fire escapes to the roof. He flies up to
meet her there. As the guy is about to shoot Nick, Schanke shoots him and
he falls over.

On the roof, Nick tries to talk her down, but she says, "I wonder what it
feels like to die," then jumps and plummets to the ground. Nick and Schanke
watch her die and she says, "It feels good."

At the station, Schanke is waiting impatiently waiting for Nick and
Stonetree mentions that they stopped at the morgue to leave something for
Natalie. Stonetree mentions that there really was nothing in the casebook
about vague suspicions about the embezzling. Nick says Anne was just after
cheap thrills and Stonetree says cheap thrills can get real expensive. Nick

zones out a bit and says, "Sometimes you get more than you bargain for."

At the morgue, a huge bottle of perfume and a rose are on the computer.

Nick zones into a flashback. He is reclining in that wonderful white
nightie and he watches Janette motion for someone to join them. LaCroix
appears then and says, "Hello Nicholas, we're going to be friends for a
long, long time."

Questions

1. Do you think Anne was actually hypnotizing her male victims to do the
things she had them do?

2. Do you think she (Anne) was really affecting him, or did he just act the
way he thought he should to get the perp?

3. Do you honestly think Nick regrets what he is or just likes his guilt?

4. How about that white nightie in the flashbacks? Yummy.

5. Do you think Schanke was in on the whole 'sting' on Anne, or he was just
bumping along with Nick?

6. How do you think Nick was able to control himself while in such close
proximity to Anne?

I knew I'd been in the SCA too long when this scene looked perfectly normal
and everyday to me, up until Janette showed up. :) I used to be Cecily de
Catton, of the Canton of Cyddlain Downs, Barony of Nottinghill Coill,
Kingdom of Atlantia. If this doesn't mean anything to you, don't worry. :)
It's the Society for Creative Anachronism, a medieval recreators group, and
the organizational terms for Columbia, South Carolina.

As they

>"Bye, Hun." (Lol)

I'm told Ger and CD did a whole take of the argument in her apartment scene
in the style of I Love Lucy. This makes me wonder if this was an ad lib. Ger
apparently was famous for them.

I loved this scene. When I first saw the episode, I thought she _was_ going
to be able to seduce him.

About time he got called on that. :) I'm told there's an outtake somewhere
in which Nick goes into the glazed expression and CD says, "off in a
flashback again! Rude, rude, rude!" I wish they'd left that in.

>Questions
>
>1. Do you think Anne was actually hypnotizing her male victims to do the
>things she had them do?

Not in the classical sense. I think she was more like forbidden fruit which
tumed out to be addictive.
>
>2. Do you think she (Anne) was really affecting him, or did he just act the
>way he thought he should to get the perp?

I think she had some effect on him, but I think he quickly got over it.
After all, he's had centuries of practice at controlling the vampire in
himself, so he probably has a lot of sexual self-control when he needs it.

>3. Do you honestly think Nick regrets what he is or just likes his guilt?

I think he honestly regrets it. I also think he wears the guilt like a hair
shirt, just like certain saints he may have admired as a mortal, and has the
theologically mistaken idea that wallowing in guilt can somehow make up for
what he did. It's mistaken from the viewpoint of classical Christian
theology, even in the medieval western church. All that should be needed in
this belief is sincere repentence and acceptance of forgiveness by divine
grace. In fact, Nick's insistence that he can't be forgiven, or can somehow
earn God's forgiveness is in itself the sin of pride, because he's presuming
to tell God how and if he should be judged
>4. How about that white nightie in the flashbacks? Yummy.
>
>5. Do you think Schanke was in on the whole 'sting' on Anne, or he was just

I think he was in on it, but I also think he got caught up in it and was in
danger of being drowned in the undertow.

>
>6. How do you think Nick was able to control himself while in such close
>proximity to Anne?

See my answer to question 2 for my opinion.

 Questions
>
> 1. Do you think Anne was actually hypnotizing her male victims to do the

Not like a vampire. Just the way some men get very stupid around
women that they think will sleep with them.
>
> 2. Do you think she (Anne) was really affecting him, or did he just act the
> way he thought he should to get the perp?
I think it was an act by Nick. I think it is how he was able to be
so close and not kill her. Nick realized he had the killer at hand
and that he could lead her into committing another crime that he
could get on tape. The "vampire" seems to be at least somewhat
under the control of a FK character. If they are not emotional; the
vampire doesn't seem "aroused". So long as Nick kept an
emotional distance, didn't involve himself with Ann as anything
more than a murderer he was trying to put away, he could be with
her and not kill her.
>
> 3. Do you honestly think Nick regrets what he is or just likes his guilt?
I think Nick likes the physical power that being a vampire gives
him. I think he does enjoy the variety that his life has had (all the
people, places and things he has been able to experience in what
is more than eight life-times). I think Nick also really does regret
the innocent people he's killed for his own amusement. In the ideal
world, if Natalie could find a potion that means Nick doesn't have to
drink blood, can have a child with her and still retain all his
superhuman powers; he'd be happy. Of course, that would also be
pretty near the end our story.
>
> 4. How about that white nightie in the flashbacks? Yummy.
I'll leave comment about this to the ladies :-)
>
> 5. Do you think Schanke was in on the whole 'sting' on Anne, or he was just
> bumping along with Nick?
He was in on the sting at the end at least (he play-acted Nick
strangling him so Ann thought he was dead when he really wasn't
badly hurt). When Nick told him, however? Nick may have waited
until he had Ann on the hook (just before the last scene) before
bringing Schanke into it to finish up.
>
> 6. How do you think Nick was able to control himself while in such close
> proximity to Anne?

See 2 above. I think that since he was holding himself
emotionally apart from her, he was able to control the vampire. If
he had began to react to her as an attractive, intriguing woman
instead of a killer, Ann would have stood a serious chance of
joining the rest of Nick's lovers in a shallow grave somewhere.

While making copies of the first four eps. for a friend, I
noticed the following: (My apologies if some of this has been
noticed & posted previously.)

1. In Dark Knight when Nick is in the Raven and Janette is
giving him a hard time about not being human anymore and
needing to stop denying what he is, the Raven chains cast
chain-shaped shadows on Nick's face, thus emphasizing how
imprisoned his condition makes him feel. (sublime)

2. In Dark Knight, Schanke's Hush-Puppied foot (see FK
Drinking Game) appears on the Caddy's brakes in place of
Nick's even before Schanke ever manages to sneak behind
the steering wheel for the first time. (ridiculous)

3. The Apartment House of the Damned appears as early as
ep. 4. Erika used to unlive there. (more ridiculous)

4. The Canadian version of "For I Have Sinned" includes
more of the Nick/Schanke dialogue outside the Raven following
Schanke's first visit there. Here Schanke brags that his
father "fooled around", his grandfather "fooled around", & so
of course he "fools around", too. This is expendable material,
I suppose, but it makes it sooo much funnier to hear Nick
supply the phrase "fool around" from the confessional.

5. The Canadian version of FIHS also includes a scene in
which Nick actually samples the garlic pills, thus giving us
an inkling of how GWD must have played Malcom Lowry suffering
from the DTs. This material *immediately* preceeds the
part where Nick tries holding the silver cross in his loft
and comments that the garlic pills helped. My, they must
work fast! What does this tell us about vampire metabolism?

6. The Canadian version of "Last Act" includes more dialogue
between Erika and Nick where it is revealed that she can
obtain visions of his memories through his blood. She sees
fighting and a castle and learns that he was wounded. (So
they didn't wait until the second to the last ep. to spring
that on us!) Will post transcript of this later. Don't
have it now & Webmail is liable to choke on it anyway.

That's exactly what happened. Steve had seen some of the episodes, but
hadn't watched the show regularly enough to realize that Janette wasn't in
the 1995-96/USA-networks season. He'd said that originally Deb was told
that Janette was straight and then later on was told to play her as bi.

Like you, I'd have considered AFWTD as a possibility for that changepoint
(even more than the present-day prostitute, the mortal Janette's mortal
friend/coworker who was dying in childbirth). The other possibility I might
have considered was ILCK... that "what a woman wants" interchange.

Hmm... here's a thought: could LC have considered bringing J across because
he knew she liked women and had obviously had a beef about most
contemporary men? I know nothing about intersexual dynamics in modern-day
GLBT context and even less in historical context -- but considering, in the
face of several scenes that could have been LC "coming on to" Nick, could
it be that for those several decades LC and J were each others' "beards"?

My pleasure. Besides, it did give me an on-topic reason to plug my cousin's
book <eg>...

I was thinking about which great (and little) moments in history our vamps
have witnessed, and I decided it was actually the little events I'd loved to
have seen them react to. I, for instance, would have loved to have seen Nick
watching the Marx Brothers for the first time. I think it would have been
priceless. <g> Anybody else?
