What gives? There's a possibility that's kind of a long shot, because I doubt that anyone else is quite as clueless about this sort of stuff as me. But when I first looked at the URL, I thought, "Oh, there's not supposed to be a space before "Comfy". Then I went, "Doh!" 'cause Comfy and the rest of it isn't part of the URL. It's telling you to go to the URL, then click on the button for the Comfy Cottage, then click on "Library". I'm supposed to know this stuff, 'cause I'm very familiar with the website. In fact, the URL is in my sig! My excuse is that about 75% of my brain cells are currently devoted to my knees. It's so nice to have a built in excuse! While watching "Only the Lonely" today, I noticed something on the birthday card that Nick gave to Nat that I never saw before. The last two words were in singular quotes. What was Nick trying to tell Natalie by placing singular quotes around the last two words of Nat's birthday card before signing? He signed the card 'with affection,' Nick. Usually, the placing of quotes is to emphasis a point, or to allow another to know that there is more to what is being said than just what the words alone state. Maybe Natalie's hurt reaction was too quick. Maybe he was trying to let her know that although their relationship appears to be like 'just friends' on the outside, he really would like it to be much more. So what were those singular quotes around those words meant to convey? Gwenn ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Jun 2000 11:55:45 -0400 From: mclisa@m....... He signed the card 'with affection,' Nick. Usually, the placing > of quotes is to emphasis a point, or to allow another to know > that there is more to what is being said than just what the words alone state. Maybe (scratching head) Your explanation of what single quotes are used for is a bit puzzling. They're not used for emphasis or to imply there is more meaning, they're used to indicate the enclosed words are a quote (verbal or printed), or to set off a word that is defined further on in the sentence, or is a euphemism. British English punctuation uses the single quote where American English uses the double quote, and vice versa. Examples: --- "Say it! Say 'I love you,' " Natalie finally screamed at Nick as he gazed adoringly at her from a safe distance. (American English punctuation) --- "Fledgling," in this context, means a very young vampire. (definition of an unusual term) --- Nick, never one to be overly clinical, preferred to call it 'my little friend.' " (euphemism; my apologies to the sensibilities of the list <g>) Why did Nick put single quotes around this phrase? Hmmm: --- A. He isn't a copy editor, and therefore didn't punctuate his card correctly (I can see Nat getting out her red pen and deleting them with the copy editor's little swirly mark <g>) --- B. He wrote "with affection" as a euphemism for "I'd love to kiss you senseless, but I have this little control problem. What a bummer." (is that what you meant, Gwenn?) --- C. He's quoting a steamy 18th century romantic poem that also compares Nat to a) a summer's day, b) a Grecian urn, or c) roses blooming in a convent garden. And while my copy editor's heart thinks the real answer is A, I want to believe it's C -- and that Nat's education glossed over those romantic poems so she doesn't recognize the quote, and thus completely misses the meaning of Nick's unbelievably romantic birthday card. <g> Nancy Kaminski nancykam@m....... someone who has actually corrected the copy in a hastily-produced paperback in a fit of righteous indignation over shoddy work "Have red pen, will travel" ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Jun 2000 14:17:55 -0500 From: Carla Martinek <copper6500@y.......> Subject: YKYBW... I think this is the right one, don't you? >G< I've seen many people use the single quote marks to emphasize a point, even if it is incorrect grammatically speaking, so I don't think that Gwenn's idea is too far fetched. Maybe Nick was trying to say more than he actually said and Nat just missed it, because she was hurt (or flustered, since she had just run into Roger and given him a bloody nose!).
