NOW, to do this, you have to have a video capture card installed in your pc. These can be bought at any decent size computer store or they can order one for you. IE CompUSA. I use WINTV with a hauptauge (Spelling???) capture card. It has a cable connector on the back. You then connect your vcr up to your pc and start Real Producer, give the file a name, a place on your hard drive to save it, how good a quality you want, including the speed of your connection. To get a good quality pic you need to record for ADSL or LAN. Now these files are going to be close to 100 megs for an hour long show with this quality. If you want to use less space record for a 28.8 or 56 K modem and it will bring it down to 15-35 megs, but the quality suffers. Don't even try recording a whole show as an AVI or MOV file. A one hour show would take up a gig (1000 megs) of space. Hope this helps. -- Steph stephke@i....... http://www.fkvoyage.com http://www.nimr.org "The sea..where each man, as in a mirror, finds himself", Richard Basehart as Ishmael "If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun." Subject: Re: Nick question Hi, I usually just lurk, but I think I can add to this question. Nick was a Chicago cop before he went to To. Here in Illinois, he would have only needed a high school diploma or a GED to get hired by the police department before 1995. It now requires two years college. So Nick would not have needed much education to be hired here. Patty ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 May 2000 03:32:06 -0700 From: "Tiffiney A. Clark" <ClarkCindy@e.......> Subject: Re: timeline of show, lists, campaigns? Cindy, I don't know if this helps, but I do know that 1996 was a busy year for FK fans. Lisa Ryder did her first convention in March of that year (Oddessy Trek in Niagara Falls). Nigel Bennett did Toronto Trek for the second year along with Lisa Ryder, and Katherine Long. I believe he did Toronto Trek in either '94 or '95 with GWD. The fans also held an FK mini-con at Toronto Trek '96. Nigel Bennett and Katherine Long also did Primemedia in Toronto in '96. Ben Bass did his first convention at Visions in Chicago in '96, and Nigel Bennett did Visions in '98. I know there was a lot of stuff happening before this, but this is when the knowledge of all the neat thing going on with FK started becoming readily available in the Cleveland area. I hope this helps, but I'm not sure this is the kind of information you're looking for. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 May 2000 12:04:04 -0400 From: "Brenda F. Bell" <bfbell@d.......> Subject: Do I sense a trend? The initial ObFK in this is that Psi-Factor has featured a number of FK alumni as regulars (Barclay Hope, Maurice Dean Wint), recurring characters (Nigel Bennett), and guest characters (Catherine Disher, Kathryn Long, and I think others)... but FK itself ties into this as well... I braved the frustration potential yesterday and went to the Psi-Factor website to verify that this week's episode of Psi-Factor was the season finale, and to find out what -- if anything -- was planned for Season 5. (The site has been all too frequently behind, and/or down.) On the "newsgroup" page, the FAQ noted that Psi-Factor has *not* been picked up for a fifth season. It also noted some interesting things about the economics and politics of Season 4. It turned out that much of the cast turnover and series redirection was dictated by economics. According to the FAQ, to keep costs down, the cast was pared (characters Ray Donahue, Michael Kelly and LQ Cooper were dropped; characters Anton Hendricks and Claire Davidson moved from regulars back to recurring/supporting characters), and Matt Frewer's screen time was pared down as well. (Rather than accept the drop in screen time and billing, Frewer opted to leave the show.) To balance things off, a young, unknown actress was brought in to add a youthful perspective to the team (character Mia Stone). This reminds me in some ways of 3rd Season FK, when characters were dropped (Janette), switched (Reese for Cohen, Vetter for Schanke), and added (Vachon, Screed) to "add a more youthful perspective" to the show... and it ended up being the show's last season. Am I just being paranoid, or is this a trend that's supplementing moving shows to unpopular times (or inconsistent times, or inconsistent channels) for the purpose of killing them off? Brenda F. To balance things off, a young, unknown : actress was brought in to add a youthful perspective to the team (character : Mia Stone). : This reminds me in some ways of 3rd Season FK, I think the emphasis is on 'unknown' rather than 'young.' She is not just youthful but she is a terrific actress who fits well into what is left of the original cast as a young person in the difficult position of being in charge of a more experienced team. Imagine if Tracey had been brought in as a new captain to replace Cohen! Picture the tight-rope of consulting with more experienced people she is in charge of, while reataining the authority of her position. It could very well be a last season for Psi Factor because Matt Frewer was a major draw for the show and because it has already run longer than 'average' for a Canadian drama; but I really think that economic factors matter here more than mere cosmetics. As the cast has been changing from 'NAMES' to relatively unknown actors, overall the quality of the stories has been improving...maybe they're spending more on writers. I don't know if it's been mentioned here, but one major overall difference that I've noticed between Canadian TV shows and comparable American shows is the ratio of brain to beauty. Compare Cold Squad or DaVinci's Inquest to Law and Order; Traders or The City to West Wing. (all of these shows have lots of FK alum, both as regulars and in guest spots.) I guess our real knock-out beauties go to California and make movies on the beaches while our more average folks stay here and work with good writers creating future cult favourites.
