"Pizzaro had laid an ambush at Lake Titicaca." --Vachon, Black Buddha 2

Pizzaro was the conquistador who slaughtered the Incas. Cortez was
responsible for the Aztecs. The Mayan civilization, I believe, was already
pretty much gone by the Spanish exploration and colonization period. Lake
Titicaca is on the border of Peru and Bolivia, which was home top the Incan
civilization. Both the Mayans and Aztecs lived in Mexico. I don't know
anything about the Olmec, Toltec, and Teotiuacan nations, but based on the
above statement and the name given to the Inca, I think we can asssume that
he was indeed an Inca.

Vachon said he was in Peru with Pizarro's army, so that would make 'the
Inka' one of the tribal people who were under 'The Inka' spiritual
leader/god of the Quechuan tribe which ruled from what is now northern
Ecuador, to Chile.

Actually, 'Inka' referred only to the chief Inkan and, later, to those of
Quechuan blood.

I highly doubt that the FK 'Inka' was actually Inkan as his earlobes are
lacking the holes they would have had for the golden decorations that that
tribe wore as 'Children of the Sun',(or gold and silver if he was not of
pure Inkan blood, but another, priveleged tribe). You could say that these
were healed by the vampire, but since they would have been pierced and
extended when he was only an adolesent...?

Honestly, Kyer (she of little brain), always thought the ftp site was just a
mirror site for Mel's, and I was already used to the way Mel's archive is
set up.

No slight intended.
So...how do we writers send them to the ftp? Any particular note in the

Another piece of terminology I picked up on, from Unreality TV--Nick
complains to Janette that he can't "control" Tawney Teller, to make her
forget.

Also, canon is contradictory about this business of blood carrying
thoughts and/or feelings. Francesca is very clear about it, but earlier
episodes show, for example, Nick not knowing whether the French
Resistance woman he just drained was a traitor or not. Here's a
suggestion: individual differences--sometimes you just get the blood,
sometimes there's only strong emotions, sometimes you get everything.

You can just add "to the ftp site" in with the line like you do for Mel's
site. You can send them to me at

Please put in the subject line FK Fiction.

As far as old fiction, it would be better to add the line, but I have gotten an
email from Judy Freudenthal that has given my blanket permission for all her
stories. I will be putting it in her directory for reference. So I guess you
can send me an email stating such and I wil do the same thing.

Subject: AWARDS: Looking for Authors (help!)

Please forward...

Hello all,

In trying to track down all the authors receiving nominations
in the Awards, I've been able to find all but a handful. I'm
sure some of these authors are out there somewhere, some
of them still involved in FK Fandom, some of them not. Since
most of us change email addresses quite often, it's easy to
lose track of some people. I

I may have more of these down the road, but in the meantime,
here's a few that I'm looking to get in contact with. When I
tried to contact them through their last given email addies
(on their fan fiction), the email bounced.

Thus, if any of these people are around (perhaps, one of
them is you and you just don't realize that you're lost <g>)
or you have an idea where any of these people can be found
(email addies), please let me know PRIVATELY, i.e. offlist.

There's no guarantee, either, at this point that these author's
stories have made the final ballot, but in case they do, I want
to allow a good amount of time in which to track them down.

If authors who's stories have been nominated and make the
final ballot cannot be found, I will have to, unfortunately,
withdraw their nominated works from the Awards.

Thanks ahead of time,
Mel

Wasn't Francesca the only vampire we were shown that killed her victims by
stabbing them in the heart, then draining their blood? I think she or Nick
explained that the sudden death sweetened the blood, or heightened the kick
somehow. When Nick drank the blood she gave him, he knew it was different
right away, and recognized it as the violinist. Maybe it's her procurement
method that allows the blood to carry the clarity of the mortals thoughts or
feelings, whereas normally they wouldn't sense it as strongly.

depends on the context, you could say "mea voluptas" (for women)or "deliciae

Individual differences might also explain why some 'vintages' are considered
superior to others. An artists memories might be preferred over a homeless
man's, but maybe not all blood is able to 'keep' and 'transfer' the feelings
of the owner.

Maybe it also has something to do with the 'donor's' spirituality? I keep
reading in fanfic that Nicholas' blood is considered of high quality---that
it is 'sweet'. Maybe its not so much that Nick has these certain emotions,
as that his blood is great at conveying them?

<<Nick: You have to understand that every drop of blood has your whole life
in it. It's not just our food; it's the way we feel life. Imagine if you
could know someone's soul, just by sharing their blood. Everything you know,
everything you are, transformed into touch and taste. Imagine the temptation
to take just one sip. One sip, and then another, and another. To take them
inside you and know every secret. To let them know yours. To _be_ them...
That's why it's such a hard habit to break.>>

As this speech clearly indicates, according to Nick in "Francesca," it's not
just Francesca's methods that intensifies the feelings absorbed from a
victim. This can also be seen in "Last Knight" when Nick bites Nat -- she
gets a sudden rush of his memories, experiences his flashbacks.

Of course, as has been pointed out already, this view of vampire biting has
been contradicted in several other episodes...

Okay, I do have a cheesy rationalization for this that I abuse in fanfic
frequently. Nick speaks of the blood carrying 'everything,' but I don't
interpret that 'everything' as being a physical presence. A memory is associated
with the brain, not albumin, platelets, yadayada, and I can't really picture
memories being secreted as so many hormones. I excuse the
blood knowledge as more of a psychic transfer thing, accessing what we
might call the life force, mental state or soul of the victim at that moment.

This is to say that, if the victim is a clear, focused, organized
kind of person, that is the manner their thoughts and feelings
translate. If they have a lot on their mind or they tend to be
scatterbrained, their thoughts and feelings come across in a scattered
fashion. If the drinkee is a person who tends to close off their
emotions, they are a habitual liar, or they are involved in
subterfuge (and this is my rationalization for the French resistance spy),
their thoughts and emotions are just as shielded to the vampire.

Then there's the question of, if blood carries knowledge, do vampires
learn anything when they neck with other vampires? If you consider it
in a spiritual sense, then the answer is simply 'they don't, because
1) they don't have a life force, and 2) they've lost their souls.' On the
other hand, if you center on the fact that FK vamps are definitely
thinking, feeling creatures, then it seems likely they can transfer
mental states through their blood. Unless they wanted to spill secrets
every time they nibble on each other, they would have to gain some
skills in shielding their thoughts/emotions. I picture LaCroix and
Janette being very good at this. Nick perhaps less so, because of a
persistent integrity, but that's just my fanciful conjecture about the state
of vampire intimacy.

You are right, of course, there are clearly contradictions in the series as a
whole ... but it's possible that when Nick was talking to Nat in Francesca,
he was mainly referring to his memories related to his flashback ...
although, his actual words imply a broader meaning.

As for Last Knight, I'm not convinced the images we saw flashing on the
screen were being seen by Natalie. I remember my first impression was that
they were Nick's thoughts and memories, and he was the one seeing them.
