Also, in Dying to Know You (I think), Nick tells the psychic that "I don't drink blood--at least, not human." Another 2nd season example is when Nick has to explain to Schanke why he has cow blood in his fridge (Killer Instinct). It's paint thickener, of course! What ep is it where Nick is dipping blood from a slaughterhouse-type barrel and ladling it into his trademark green bottles? One nice thing about watching FK with the closed captioning is that they usually put quotation marks around the Nightcrawler's quotes. In "Dark Knight," Nick sarcastically remarks that it's better for him to "drink a little cow blood now and then" than to kill humans. In "Night in Question," Natalie tells him, "You usually drink cow blood. You gave up human blood a long time ago." In "Killer Instinct," Nick tells Schanke that the blood in his fridge is cow blood (for thickening his oils) and if he'd been lying, forensics would have made a point of it. In "Love You To Death," Nick tells Janette that he hasn't killed since his murder of Sylvaine, and the only reliable alternative to killing humans is to take animal blood. In an episode I don't recall, Janette makes a face and a remark at the cow blood Nick drinks, as does LC in AMPH. In "Father Figure," however, Lisa accidentally finds bags of blood in Nick's freezer, which are more likely to be human -- perhaps for emergencies.... or guests. Or, perhaps, those are samples of Nick's own blood. I don't believe it was established on screen. In any case, it is canonical that Nick drinks cow blood, not human blood, under normal circumstances. Nat's "donated plasma" comment in "Blackwing" is, imho, just another example of her formidable sarcasm. *** Amy, Lady of the Knight (akr@n.......) *** If Nick and Janette were in love, and Nick became mortal, what would their relationship be like? ========================================================================= Date: Thu, 27 Jun 1996 19:29:54 -0400 From: Ann Lipton <Iocaste@a.......> Subject: Time's Running Out to Vote for Fave Episode! In NiQ, I think Natalie says, "You usually drink cow's blood," and in AMPH, I think there's something said about cow's blood. Does anyone know? There's a scene in AMPH where LaCroix is drinking blood from Nick's fridge (apparently) and says, "I suppose the palate could get used to this." So it isn't human blood. Anything from first season? Along the same lines though, in Blackwing, Natalie says to Nick, "You drank three quarts of donated plasma, for breakfast." Any theories on how come Nick had donated plasma around all of a sudden? That one guy and that others she drank from may have been God fearing people but I think that she hasn't drunken enough to be fear crosses. Just like old vampires may be afraid of the cross more then vampires that have just been brought across is that the old vampires have drunken more blood from God fearing humans then the newly brought across. I hope this doesn't get confussing to you. Why the egyptian sun symbol may have worked for Divia and not the other vampires was that she believed in it or that she believed it was like the sun. If anyone doesn't want to know about Aztecs, hit the delete button NOW! In fact, the Aztec culture admired and respected a lot of values that the Europeans admired, like compassion, sincerity, humility, etc. etc. But since they had this human sacrifices, everybody, strating with the priests, thought it was justifiable to conquer and even destroy the culture. They thought the Aztecs were in urgent need to be *saved*. since they had no morals at all. However, Jacques Soustelle reminds us that each culture has its own conceptions about what is good or evil, cruel or not. From an antropological point of view, it is now generally accepted that every culture has the right to behave as their customs allow (independent of other culture's ideas and conceptions). Aztecs didn't sacrifice people by the millions, as it is commonly believed. Up to half the XV century, human sacrifices were rare. They were limited to the ocasional slave or prisoner of war who, for an amount of time, came to represent the god he was going to be sacrificed to. So, he lived better than the king for a time and then was sacrificed, as a sign of gratitude to the god. Human sacrifice began to be important from 1430 on. Which means thatthere were about 90 years of human sacrifices. Tue, 25 Jun 1996 10:18:23 -0700 From: "Nina A. The Guerras Floridas, or Wars of the Flowers, were periodic wars that the Aztecs made against other indigenous tribes. Both antagonists had to be in agreement to have the war, since its purpose was to get prisoners to serve as sacrifices. That is, both sides had an opportunity to make prisoners. This served two basic ends. One, the Tenochtitlan valley and in general the central part of Mexico has never been a place of plenty. Which meant that the indigenous cultures had to have a way to control population. The Wars of the Flowers permitted this, because the prisoners were sacrificed and the population remained stable through the years. It may seem cruel at first, but is it really? It would have been much worse to kill infants or to allow overpopulation and starvation. Especially because the other basic end, or the idea behind sacrifices, was not just to kill unwilling victims. Someone wrote something along these lines, that I wouldn't have liked to be the unwilling sacrifice. BUT that's just it. Yes they did sacrifice a few maidens (but those were the mayas, not the Aztecs) and a few children (let's say, donated by their parents because of their special characteristics: they were very beautiful, usually). But mainly the sacrifices were men who had fought in the wars, perfectly aware of what they were doing and what their fate would be if they got caught. So, they weren't quite the unwilling sacrifice. They accepted being sacrificed because Aztec children (and others) were brought up believing that life and death were two aspects of the same reality, two sides of the same coin. Even nowadays, Mexicans joke about death. We don't see death as something to be mortally afraid of. Death for the aztecs was the process of giving up something (life) that everybody knew had to be transferred at some moment. The nahuatl term for sacrifice, nextlaoaliztli, means literally "the payment". Children were taught thatthe "flowered death", (under an obsidian knife BTW) was an honorable way to die.According to the Aztec religion, there were three ways to get to their "heaven" : being a sacrifice, dying at the battleground, or in the case of women, to die giving birth. All who died in one of those three ways were honored and cherished. If they died any other way (drowned, in their beds, in an accident, of old age, of sickness, any other way) they were just buried, they didn't count in the eyes of the gods. Those who died under the obsidian knife had a better life after death (in Omeyocan, the sun's paradise), while the ones who died a normal death went to Mictlan, the subterranean world of anhililation. If you were a firm believer of these things, maybe you would choose to die as a sacrifice. In a way, it's like the Arabs that went to holy wars believing that if they died that way, they would get to paradise (I forget the name). Or the Kamikazes, or the terrorists in the Middle East. Every body has their own beliefs. Besides, sacrifices were given (noy always, but they were) either pulque (a drink that comes from the same place as tequila does, only this one is muuuch worse) or a dose of some allucinogen (is that well said? Meaning, a plant or a fungus that works like dope). So it was easier for them to accept their fate. > Cortez and the Spaniards could >never have conquered the Aztecs without the enthusiastic backing of the >Aztec Empire's subject peoples. Ah, but the subject peoples weren't backing the Spaniards because they didn't want to be murdered... The Aztecs were hated extensively by every one of the subject "tribes" (they weren't tribes, but let's call them that) because they asked for tribute. And the tribute was becoming excessive. The backing up was part of an agreement the Spaniards made with the lords of Tlaxcala, but not because of the human sacrifices but because the Tlaxcaltecans were ambitious and had been sorely mistreated by the aztecs. And so not-unwilling victims were all the inhabitants of the valley, that even after the Spaniards had conquered Tenochtitlan, even after they had destroyed temples and pyramids (isn't that equally barbaric???) and forced people to accepted Catholicism and build churches... even then their religion did not die. Since the Spaniards used the Aztecs and other indians to build the churches, mostly unsupervised...what happened was, the builders put images of their old gods and godesses in the inside of the altars. So when the priests said mass, and they thought that the indians were kneeling to the Virgin and to Christ, what they didn't know was that there was this little image inside the altar. And that the indians were kneeling to *that*. And now even I think I have written waaaaay too much, for which I (almost) ask for forgiveness. If anyone has any doubts or would be interested in reading something else, there is a wonderful book named The Conquest of Mexico, by Hugh Thomas (Yeees, it's in English!) and I highly recommend it. It even got Thomas the Aguila Azteca, which is the utmost recognition the Mexican goverment gives to non-mexicans. I don't remember anything about cows from first season... Except I think in Dark Knight LC drinks some cow from a barrel in what I want to call a meat packing plant. I've only seen DK at an FK party, so I was doing more laughing and talking than watching, so I can't say for certain. >Along the same lines though, in Blackwing, Natalie says to Nick, "You drank >three quarts of donated plasma, for breakfast." Any theories on how come >Nick had donated plasma around all of a sudden? A really charitable cow? ;) Other indications that the blood is bovine: In "Close Call", Schanke tells LC that bottles of blood were found in Nick's fridge. LC asks: "Human?" Shanke replies: "No, steer." LC is disgusted, but not for the reasons Schanke thinks! In another ep (I want to say "Killer Instinct"), Nick is arrested and cops search his loft. They find blood. This is the scene Schanke is referring to in "Close Call". Nick later explains to him it's cow's blood and uses it for painting. Bleh. What *I* wanna know is where does LC get all that human vintage for the Raven. Donors? Bloodmobile? ****Wicked Cousin Tippi**** HEY! Want FK stuff? Sony needs to know that you want it! You might notice, though, as you listen to Lacroix speak German to the young A. Hitler, that obviously NB was speaking it phonetically. We may have that reputation, but it's just not the case. We discuss *all* the aspects that Joy lists above, *plus* any others that we see. We are a *very* complex faction, as complex as the pair we admire and discuss. I think if you visit our web page you'll see that. :) http://www.psnw.com/~deb/wendy/uf/ I know Joy didn't mean to imply the UF doesn't discuss the aspects she listed above, but I just wanted to clarify. ****Wicked Cousin Tippi**** HEY! I gather from his English that he's from North American. Does he have a foreign accent in Chinese? Btw, at Toronto Trek 1993, someone asked Ger about the Chinese he spoke in Dark Knight. His reply was that he'd learned it phonetically. The questioner, who speaks Chinese, said Ger sounded all right. Ger replied, "Thanks. What did I say?" :) Cousin Lisa -- "That will be trouble." I have always loved the tag in that ep., where Nat and Nick are talking, about the hunt. Schanke comes in and had said that he was fine, aside from sitting on a possible nuclear disaster, and that Myra had been pestering him about some vacation down to the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and that he'd been feeling exhausted. Nat suggests that the morgue was not so busy, and that the others in there wouldn't mind if he pulled up a table and lay down for a while. After joking around for a bit, before Nick and Schank left, Nick gave Nat a playful kiss on the cheek.
