I don't have any specific quotes from any of TPTB about the relationship
between Nick and LC. My comments are just my opinions as based upon a
viewing of the episodes. I don't recall as much emphasis being placed
on the father/son relationship in first season. Does anyone recall
any dialogue or commentary in this regard from first season episodes
(I'm drawing a blank right now)? But second season gave us Father's
Day (with its heavy emphasis on the father/son aspect of their
relationship) and there have been many other instances of dialogue
in second and third seasons emphasizing the father/son aspects. It
almost felt to me that with LC's return, someone decided that they
wanted it pounded into viewers' heads that this was a *father and son*
relationship. This is just my opinion but maybe there was some concern
that a homosexual tone to the relationship would lose viewers and
sponsors. The increased emphasis on the father/son stuff smacks of
"thou doth protest too much", imo. :)

Well my system has been acting REALLY screwy today and decided to miss up
the spelling of Fred's last name. I sincerely apologize for the error.
However, as it would be too hard to go back and repost that first part [as
I believe only the intro had his name spelled wrong.] I also think it
would go against list rules to repost that size of a file. I will most
definitely be changing it before I send my copy to him. I do give
permission for any of you who are saving the file for personal keep or
showing others, to go ahead and correct the spelling of his name. [And
only that.]

Again, I apologize for any error.

That's easy. In OtL, Natalie had flipped her calendar forward a couple
of months because she was planning her travel to the first "Weekend with
Scottie."

It seems to me it makes a difference as to whether there was already an
adult, consenting, sexual/romantic relationship before the person was
brought over, as in the case with Alyssa, or whether the vampire brought
someone over and then forced a sexual relationship on them.

Is this the person to write to to ask them to try to get the Canadian
versions of first season? The last time we had some info on this, Sci-Fi
said they needed the advertising revenue. I wonder if they're aware that
the Canadian versions are about the same length (45 minutes?) as second
and third season eps (I gather they're 44 minutes, from reading Fred
Mollin's interview), while the American versions of first season eps are
only 38 minutes long. Do we write to Barry Schulman about this, or

I suspect they simply didn't have the space. A CD can only hold approx 74
minutes and the soundtrack CD has approx 73 minutes worth of tunes. It's
definitely a full CD. Fred -- how about FK soundtrack part 2 !

In the last ep, April 14 is quoted as Nat's birthday. (No way that's a
spoiler)>
I say that's a good date because it's also my birthday. :)
As for why the calendar in OTL said June...well maybe Nat was looking
ahead at something when Nick's body was wheeled in and distracted, she
neglected to turn it back to the right month - April.

Yes. The only first season episode I've seen is "Dark Knight", but it was
the pilot. There is a speech in it where LC says to Nick, "Immortality.
Wasn't that your big wish? To live forever. ... I gave that to you. What
did I get in return? Desertion, hatred, contempt." That, to me, is the
parental Ungrateful Child speech. Obviously, other people may have other
interpretations, but IMNSHO on this particular point, the parent-child
relationship was there from the very beginning.

Well, I just checked my Toronto street map, and there is no "Gateway

Just thought you might want to know.

I have been very good last week and I put two articles in the mail

In this case it's important to remember that the de Brabant trust *didn't
exist* in the foundation paperwork. The only person who knew that money
was gone was Nick ... and he had a great stake in making sure no one found
out about it; it's why he made sure at the end that Sean completed the
transaction transfering the money to a Swiss account before he and Schanke
went in to bust Walken.

See above. And as regards the murder, which is what Schanke was trying
to pin on Sean, Nick was right: Sean didn't kill his father.

I really like this idea! I've been in many medical facilities and noticed
that they do have a rather BIG habit of going out of their ways to mention
vacations and days off....maybe it's due to the long hours or crazy schedule
they normally work.

That never struck me as being very parental, actually. ;) In fact, doesn't
Ike Turner make a similar speech to Tina Turner in that flick What's Love
Got To Do With It? Replace "immortality" with "fame" and "to live forever"
with "to sing in front of people in mini-skirts". I'm *mostly* just
kidding. ;) Just trying to show that there are, indeed, many ways of
interpreting events and dialogue and no one way is any more or less valid.
Such a speech *could* be made a parent to a child, but it could just as
easily be made by one lover to another after a particularly nasty breakup.

After having seen about 15 of the first season eps, I'd have to say that I
agree with Sandra. The first season does *not* place as much emphasis on
the parent-child relationship as, say, the second and third seasons. The
first season does emphasize the master-slave relationship in quite a few
eps. And, strangely, even tho LC is (at this point) dead, he's still on
Nick's mind quite often.

I'm voteing for '101 Dalmaitions'. (He watches it to get pointers
from Crewela DeVil (sp?) on how to torture Nick. Of course *really* he's
secretly carrying a torch for her, but don't tell him that I said so.)

Just a quick follow-up.

I had mentioned that I found the promotion of the idea of incest between LC
and Nick a bit much. The responses have been fascinating.

Several people on-line have taken the attitude that my opinion against incest
was somehow a personal attack. Of course is was nothing personal. This is a
forum for discussion, right? At least two respondents have implied that I
said something that could be interpreted as quelling their free speech. No
so. Re-read my post. I have just as much of a right to express my feelings
about a potentially incestuous relationship between LC and Nick as anyone
(regardless of how they view the subject).

As for the relationships between LC/Nick/Janette, LC is always the father
figure. Nick was apparently brought over in part to be a sexual partner for
Janette.

Finally, I believe LC had the final word on his feelings about incest when
Divia tried to seduce him and had her head detached for her troubles.

Works for me. The only problem I had with it was that in OTL, it was clearly
warm weather, as everyone was walking around without a coat. Having just
been in Toronto in late April, there's *no way* it could have been that warm!

Well, I hope you get to see more of the first season episodes someday.

>the parent-child relationship was there from the very beginning.

As Tippi said, not everyone views that scene that way. I didn't,
mainly because of the long head-to-toe, sensual look at Nick that LC
gave Nick when he neared him.

I don't think anyone is suggesting that there is *not* a parent-child
aspect to the relationship between LC and Nick. It's just that some
people see more levels of interaction than that. There's the friend
and brother aspects, for examples.

I thought LC exhibited symptoms of jealousy when watching Nick and
Nat kiss in Be My Valentine. In first season's Father Figure, they
take in a homeless mortal boy that Nick and Janette started to feel
"parental" for. LC's reaction seemed to me to be resentment of this
mortal child luring Janette and Nick away from him. He brings the
boy across. This can be viewed as LC simply not wanting his vampire
children to have any idea that they could lead a happy "mortal-style"
life. But underlying it all, imo, is jealousy.

Tippi writes:
>The first season does emphasize the master-slave relationship in
>quite a few eps.

Yes, and that is another aspect of their relationship, which is also
stated in very literal terms by Nick in the flashback of Killer
Instinct. When LC tells Nick he is "my protege", Nick replies "Your
slave." And this was not long after Nick was brought over. He was
able to perceive the bond between them as being controlled by LC, I
think. This is shown more graphically later in Nick's *desparate
fear* that LC has *left* him when LC is training him to find him by
"vibrations" (those invisible vampire ties between them). Nick has
been able over the centuries to resist LC's control and eventually
break away from it to a large degree. But early on, LC called the
shots and if LC had wanted to take sexual advantage of Nick, I don't
think Nick would have been able to put up a lot of resistance. The
attitude projected in the "tracking by vibration" scene is that Nick
is totally dependent on LC. And LC tries very hard to keep Nick that
way over the centuries too. Why is this so? He has not kept other
children he's made under his thumb--just Nick and Janette. And since
Nick came along, he's paid much less attention to Janette. Further,
I think he's used Janette as a lure to try to keep Nick in the "family".

>And, strangely, even tho LC is...dead, he's still on Nick's mind quite
>often.

I think that's because to Nick LC came to represent all that was *evil*
about being a vampire. He embodied Nick's darkest fear--becoming like
LC. It's also is apparent that Nick suffered much emotional abuse by
LC (although LC may not have seen it that way), perhaps to an extent
that Nick felt a bit "rootless" with LC "dead". It also seems that
his relationship with LC has been his strongest connection to another
vampire. We've seen Nick in flashbacks with just LC, but rarely have
we seen Nick *alone* with Janette in a flashback. This may be an
indication that LC was more influential in Nick's life than Janette.

Finally, I have to say that a "parent-child" relationship does not
necessarily negate a sexual relationship. Sadly, even among mortals,
some parents sexually abuse their children.
