I don't remember who wrote this. I'm quoting from someone else's quote. As a former assistant listowner and as a current member who is concerned about the atmosphere on Forkni-l, I have to comment. Please, don't take this for a flame -- I think I remember that the poster was new to the list. If not, we can all use a reminder from time to time. On Forkni-l, we don't make posts like that. It's one thing to state as the post did earlier, that Fever sucks. That's an opinion, although we usually phrase opinions more elegantly and offer reasons why we think so. It's another to make a personal attack on the author. We don't do that at all because it's related to flames and it's an ironclad given here that Jaye doesn't allow flames. She never has, going back to our first, long since departed, flamester in 1993. We are all friends here, or at least we try to be. It might be a good idea to add that the author of Fever, Gillian Horvath, is a lovely person with a great sense of humor who has been known to read the FK lists. She has several good friends on Forkni-l. No, not me; I've only met her once in passing and would be surprised if she remembered my me. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Mar 1996 09:13:33 -0500 From: Katja Stokley <cstokley@c.......> Subject: Re: Nat's notebook On Tue, 26 Mar 1996, Muldy Sculler wrote: > I disagree with Catherine's assessment that Nick was looking at Nat's lab > notebook. I just got back from a wonderful trip to Toronto and Montreal. In general, my favorite city was TO, but not because of FK or anything :) I was perplexed, though, by the fact that I didn't see anything to indicate that FK was even filmed or shown there. Sure, I got some info on filming sites from the list but as far as promotion in the city, I saw none. So I came up with my own list of things that reminded me that FK was filmed there: 5. I got to look around the Royal Ontario Museum (i.e. "Nick Knight"). My travel companion wondered why I kept looking at the ceiling. I told her I was expecting Micheal Nader to come flying through it. This left her *very* perplexed. 4. Lots and lots of Freedent ads in the front of convience stores with a vampire lady wearing exagerated fangs. BTW, these were also in abundance in Montreal, except they are in French. 3. The Brick Warehouse. I was surprised to find out this is an actual legit funiture store, and not a "Knightie" form of the Raven. 2. I actually got to bum around the Raven. I didn't go inside, however. It was 8:00 in the morning when I walked by it. But the point is I "felt" the vibes :> 1. I *finally* got to see the infamous Oatmeal commercial!! This was the highlight of my trip (and I do mean trip). Thanks to all who volunteered to help me in TO. I appreciated it! In this you are able to create animated movies. He entitled it "Trapped In Toronto" and had the bmp of LC in the background and Spiderman and the X-Men attacking his head. LC brought Spiderman over (now, theres a fan-fic waiting to happen!) and then Spiderman went on to terrorize the evil characters in the Marvel Universe. The Canadian version of OtL that I have does indeed have Nick at Nat's desk in the morgue, he finds the notebook, but Grace supposedly interrupts him before he reads it, the scene shows him about to open it and then putting it back on the desk hurriedly when Grace bursts in. Lately, I've got to admit, the tone of the list has been, well, hurt. The flames, the unknowing laughter at anothers expense, the innocent blunders of newbies, etc, etc. I'm pretty new, although I have officially dropped the newbie tag. I have no extended history on this list or some others do. But, my experience on the list has had an incredible impact on me. Let's see, since I've been on list I've managed to aquire ALL of the previous unseen eps (I have copied only the last 12 from my own TV), that's 50 eps guys, 50! These from people I have never met, I even got a refund from someone who told me I had overpaid the cost of tapes and postage (Hi N.!!! <waving to ya>). I have participated in the flyer campaign, the letter writing campaign, the contact your syndie campaign, the wishing crane effort (Hi Nancy, the senior partner in a joint effort in this regard) the fanclub membership thing and dabbled a little in the fanfic thing. With each and every foray into the world of FK I have been met with nothing but kindness by the other members of this list, with so few exceptions that they can be counted on one hand! I have enjoyed, immensely, the ongoing banter between those old timers on the list with obvious history, Wicked Cousin Tippi's ESP, the allusion to wars and the rumors of wars, the ongoing discussion of the 'we agree to disagree' type that seem to encompass the new eps that touch us all deeply, move us like no other show has done in some time. I have rather enjoyed the fanfic, the hilarity, the sadness at the news of the cancellation but the resilience and conviction of the members of this list. As a newbie, I made mistakes, after all, cyberspace IS a bold new world. The members of this list kindly, gently, took my by the hand and helped to make me feel safe and teach me the ways of the net. For which, I bow to you all in humble thanks. But, still, I make mistakes. I took the Tour Guide Flame post as just another post in the ongoing barb laden jesting post that so obviously goes on between the veteran members of the list. I laughed. I now realize (and have sent apologiy to Will) that this post was a flame, and that my response was inappropriate. Okay, sic hand after me. Sic Uncle after me. Whatever. Just let me say, that those of us very new to the list can suffer from incredulity in these matters. How are we supposed to know? Perhaps if I had analized the post more carefully...Perhaps if I had tried to read it with Will's eyes, put myself in his position? But, I don't know Will, I don't know Lynn, I don't know Marg. I don't know the person or persons who posted the message. But I'd like too. I really would. Now, none of you know me. You have no way of knowing if I'm on the level or not. That's fair. But, I'm willing to state in public, and for the record (and have done so in the past) that I do trust you all. I have spent hundreds of dollars planning to go to TO in the hopes of meeting you. I do not want to go and spend the days in my room, take a cab to the theater, ogle GER, laugh with Shakespeare, and go home. No. I want to go to TO, spend as much time as is humanly possible with great people, go to the theater, ogle GER, laugh with Shakspeare, meet Ger, spend as much time as possible with great people and come home. Those are my objectives. Period. I have friendships that have been cultivated on this list that transend cyberspace, (Hi Nancy! Hi Dotti!). Although I have never participated in a war, been to a FK party (to be remedied soon thanks to Susan), ever met even one of you in person, etc, etc, I have participated on this list. Sometimes my post are even noteworthy to some of you, you quote me! Boy, what a kick to a newbie. To have someone else read what you post and find you funny, or challenging. That's why we're all here isn't it? Because we really like each others company? Because it IS a thrill to be noticed, appreciated? I think so. And I appreciate each and every one of you. Honest. And to Will, Lynn, Marg, Bea, Allison, Marcia (if I'm leaving someone out, please forgive, I am mentally stretched at the moment), for all the help in organizing the Shrewthering... YOU GUYS ARE JUST AWESOME!!!! There is no other way to put it. Especially the TO crew...Man oh man oh man oh man. What a great group of people. You see, unlike Schanke, I believe in sweetness and light happy endings. And I want this list to believe in them too. If you've offended, apologize. If you've been offended, forgive. If there is a right, report it. If there is a wrong, try to help correct it. If in doubt, give the benefit of the doubt. When you are happy, laugh and share. When you are sad, cry and share. When you can, console. When you can't, pray. These are my philosophies. Shared with the ONLY intention of letting you all know how I feel. There are no flames here. Just a very simple manifesto. I really do appreciate you all. ObFK: I rewatched POTM. Isn't there a message there for us? Even when we're angry or hurt, we're still the best friends each of us has got? Well, I'm beginning to think so. I sure hope you all do too. He is persistant in looking for a cure, but once it gets difficult or he feels that there is something easier out there, he's gone. Nat has tried to work out a plan of treatment and research, Nick wants something that involves minimal effort on his part. And, in terms of nagging, any doctor that would have to deal with that immature an attitude (who isn't a pediatrician) on a daily basis is not going to be pleased. >And LC is twice Nick's age. And then he'd bring Nick back across. Even I have to give LaCroix some credit. Do you really think that he believes he would be able to hold onto Nick if he were to take his mortality away from him? Right now, Nick sees LaCroix as somewhat more evil then he is, but if he were to be forced into vampirism after attaining the redemption of mortality and the promise of a full, human life, Nick would never forgive him. And what's more, he wouldn't put up with LaCroix's presence to the extent that he does now. No more listening to the radio, no more visits, no more contact. Though Siddhartha Gautama (sp?) always professed to be a *teacher* not a god, some people, and sects, still revere him as a deity. But I think that Cynthia is right. From a literal, technical, historical vantage point a Buddha is not a religious article. In fact SG NEVER considered his teachings to be the basis of a "religion" at all; that happened after his death. So if Nick, who as an archeologist knew a great deal about history, could very likely have made a distinction between the Buddha as a religious articfact and just an artifact. But I would most certainly be interested in hearing the POV of some other Buddhists...Rebecca? Alisa? She lives very much by her own rules, her primary interest being survival and amusement. At least, until lately. But Jamie is absolutely correct about 'how' Raven/ettes operate. When things tend to get boring, we're not adverse to stirring things up a bit. But we always try to make certain that someone else gets the 'credit.' As opposed to Cousins, who LIKE to cause havoc and LIKE to take credit for it. As opposed to Mercs who cause havoc and like to get PAID for it. As opposed to Knighties and Natpackers and Diehards and Perks, who like to bring order out of chaos and restore peace. As opposed to Vaqueros, who probably enjoy WATCHING havoc, but not necessarily participating in it. As opposed to FODs, who cater havoc as a matter of course. I do a LOT of work stuff, but FK and the list has really become *the better part* of my *social* life (time wise *and* quality wise). As a newbie, still in diapers but slowing learning to crawl I have had some of the same experiences, but I could have never said it so eloquently. Thank you for summing up exactly how I feel. Then to the person who didn't like Fever--Why Not?! I thought it was hilarious, especially Nick's behaviour. I also liked that they showed the price he had to pay for his brief experience. And for the rest of my new friends--Thank you for all the help and patience you have showered upon me<Hi Sandra-Hi Susan!>. Every time I've asked for help, I've received it in spades. For a vampire, the sex act is in the biting and taking of the blood. I don't think our definitions of "homo" or "hetero" are even applicable to vampires. We are trying to make them fit into OUR categories which is a mistake because they fall outside the lines. Vampires are about as androgynous as you can get. Agree or disagree?? Things were pretty regular last fall -- when they began airing it here for the first time -- but since Christmas they have begun pre-empting it for *boxing* (I missed "FI" and "DoN" that way, and some earlier ones that I picked up on USA). This week, they've pushed it back from midnight to one a.m. And I have just this week discovered that they unforgivably snipped a scene from "HF" (yes, a large post regarding that is coming soon to fkspoilr). :) ***** Amy, Lady of the Knight (Amy R.) r......@w....... ***** "Opinion in good men is but knowledge in the making." -- Milton Devoted Knightie, Light Cousin, Repentant Ex-Nevermore ------------------------------ End of FORKNI-L Digest - 27 Mar 1996 - Special issue ****************************************************
