>walked away from the cure/Toronto/Natalie/humanity?...Obviously,
>there's SOMETHING that he wants/needs/desires. And it's either
>Nat, Tracy, or Reese...

What he desires is the first thing you mentioned in your second
sentence above--a cure. Above all else, above whatever he may feel
for Nat or humanity in general, Nick wants a *cure*. That's the
major reason he's stayed, why he puts up with Nat's nagging, etc.
Nick has always been persistent in keeping with anyone who can
offer him a cure.

Those times he has wanted to walk away, also, have not, imo, been
that many. In Cherry Blossoms he thought he would be forced out by
the Chinese man telling on him. In Black Buddha, the decision was
more emotional and based on a desire to protect those mortals he
cares about (particularly Nat) from the "curse" he thought he'd
brought on everyone with the buddha. The fact that he was going to
leave shows he would have gone on without Nat if necessary. Nick's
immortal, after all; there are always other avenues to a cure to
explore.

>And if Nat wanted to do away with LC, all she'd need is a little
>lidovuterine and a stake.

Well, that may be possible, but I'm not sure that's a sure thing.
We know the litovuterine only temporarily suppressed the vampire in
Nick. It was never *really* gone. And LC is twice Nick's age. I
think there's a possibility that the drug would either not have as
much of an effect on LC or that, as the vampire would still be there,
he would not stay dead if she staked him.

>admitting that he can't outwit her, can't outmaneuver her, can't win
>in a battle of wits between them.

Why should he have to bother? He and Nick are immortal; Nat isn't.
All he has to do is wait until either Nat or Nick gets tired of Nick
not being cured. Nick will either try something or somewhere else
to find his cure or Nat will finally get discouraged and give up.
And if neither of those things happen, LC has time on his side as
Nat is mortal and will get old and die eventually. LC doesn't *need*
to do anything but wait. If he chooses to do engage in a "battle of
wits" with Nat, it will be for his own personal reasons. He doesn't
*need* to do so.

And if Nat should happen to cure Nick, then I think you'd see him
move to remove her. And then he'd bring Nick back across. He hasn't
done much with or about Nat because he doesn't consider her a real
threat yet.

>OtL, BmV, NiQ, that was all intellectual...platonic.

Oh, I agree that Nick cares about and is attracted to Nat. But that
hasn't stopped him from being attracted to other women (Emily Weiss
in Stranger Than Fiction, Marian in Blackwing, Janette).

>LC hasn't killed Nat because:
>1) killing Nat would indicate his defeat;

As I said above, I don't think LC feels any need to kill Nat because
he doesn't consider her much of a threat yet.

>2) Nick would never forgive him.

Nick has hated LC since long before he met Nat. Unless something
really makes Nick change his mind about wanting to be mortal, LC
killing Nat wouldn't make any difference to Nick's aims. He'd still
be against doing what LC wanted him to do. Yes, he might not forgive
LC, but if Nick doesn't find a cure, who knows what might change
between the two of them after several centuries go by? Or what other
women Nick might fall in love with in that time?

>Nick's got it as bad as any human male could have it for
>any woman; and if there's self-delusion involved, it's the same type as in
>any purely human relationship.

But having it bad for someone doesn't necessarily mean that a relationship
will work out. If that was so, more people would marry their "first
love". :) Nick wants Nat, she wants him. But that doesn't mean that
they wouldn't encounter problems if Nick became mortal that would
drive them apart.

>what Nick's behavior has done to erode Nat's love for him...

And she's done nothing to erode any feelings he has for her?

>You think Nat WANTS to have to keep reminding him that "in human
>society, we don't bite the bad guys"?

Oh, please. Nick hasn't "bitten" anyone in at least 50 years and
certainly not since coming to live in Toronto (speaking about humans
here). Her nagging doesn't have anything to do with *biting* people.

>she hates her weak points, but is capable of acknowledging them.

What about Dead of Night? Just acknowledging weak points isn't
enough. You have to decide what to do about them (accept them or
overcome them?). Imo, Nat spends a lot of time trying to pretend her
weaknesses don't exist, covering them up with "control".

>she'd make good and sure he was dead. And would then be very happy with

I'm glad to see people defending Natalie, but I don't accept the idea
that Nat and Nick couldn't keep a relation going if Nick were mortal.
In an online chat, Ger said Nick will regain his mortality when he
earns it. If that's so (and even Ger may not know), then obviously Nick
hasn't earned it yet, maybe for some of the reasons Jamie pointed out,
where he's done things that have hurt Natalie. Nick has a lot of growing
up to do still, (some people take an awfully long time to grow up). Maybe
"earning" it and "growing up" mean sort of the same thing. If that's so,
then Nick as a mortal will have to be more mature than he is now, and so
probably perfectly capable of keeping a relationship going, and not
hurting Nat in the ways he has in the past. Surely, Nick has shown enough
decency and caring, both for Nat and others, in past seasons and in this,
to think that it's likely he will continue to grow in a good way, and,
if he can ever become mortal, to succeed in a loving relationship.

Subject: Finally...Post-Play Acknowledgements & "Thank You"s!

I've been promising this for over a month now, and at long last, here it is -
Cousin Will's Post-Play "Thank You"s, Acknowledgements, and...considering how
close it is to April, I might as well throw in "Hopes and Dreams" :-) for the
next great play...

They play was great, and the company was fantastic. I also know that I went
out of my way to meet as many fellow fans as possible, even to the point of
introducing myself on countless occasions. Hopefully, I didn't end up scaring
anyone... :-) (Who, me? I conceivably couldn't scare a _fly_ if I tried...)

Now, without further ado...

(...and stay tuned for a Special Announcement coming up later on...)

My biggest Thank You goes to none other than our esteemed assistant listowner,
Laurie Salopek (hmmm, so what does the "M" in lms5 stand for, eh? :-) :-) ),
for providing us with a forum for discussing and organising this event.

Furthermore, needless to say, this on-the-list organisation was greatly helped
by organisation on the home front, and for that aspect of things, I thank
Lynne Ackerman for doing the work of a small army almost by herself. One of
those absentee army regulars was _me_, owing to my having fallen off the face
of the Earth during January and February. Nevertheless, I have pledged to
"repay society for my sins" (groan...).

And, not necessarily in order.... (Incidentally, if I get any names or
attributions mixed up, or if I have left out credit for your contributions,
please don't shoot me...or "Fire at Will", for that matter).

To Lana Soward & Diana Edwards, a hearty note of thanks for producing and
distributing the Winter's Tale pins. They're quite fetching, and by their
quality appearance, took a great deal of time -- and money -- to produce.

Jamie Melody Randell: Many thanks for the warm fuzzies! I can see why they're
gathering so many rave reviews! (Oh....and why, why, why, Jamie, why have you
forsaken us, why have you betrayed your fellow Cousins? I'm so hurt....ah,
but I hear that we'll be making sport of you in the next war.... :-) :-) ) -
if anyone didn't realise that I was _kidding_ just then, he or she is
obviously taking the whole idea of factional rivalry _way_ too seriously.
Seriously though, even though you're no longer a Cousin, I still "luv'ya like
a sister". Heck, anyone who loves Canada as much as you you do, has a special
place in our hearts.

Valerie Meachum: After the pin and the warm fuzzies, the green beaded necklace
made me feel positively Hawaaian. Obviously, your talents go far beyond the
art of "just" _theatre_. And, on the subject of theatrical art, you have my
thanks for explaining the play before the fact. Live theatre isn't usually my
"cup of tea" (except when it provides an opportunity to meet fellow fans), so
I half expected to come out of the play saying "What just happened?". Thanks
to your synopsis, however, that didn't happen. (Oh, and by the way, yes, I
_did_ find the piece of fluff on my hair... :-) )

Laurie Fenster: How can any list of acknowledgements be complete without
thanking you for your high degree of support to the Save Our Show campaign?
Our campaign has needed not just volunteers, but _money_ to pay the bills, and
your willingness to possibly risk thousands of dollars for the show, is more
laudable than mere words can say. I felt positively foolish having given you
a mere ten dollars (Canadian, no less! :-( ) in order to help you recoup
your donation, but having said this, I hope that everyone can at least help
pitch in whatever they can afford. (Incidentally, is there any truth to the
rumour that you bought one of the auctioned Caddies? :-) :-) Kidding!!!
Actually, if I could have afforded it...)

Mary G.T. : You came all the way from Australia for this? Now, THAT shows
dedication!

Peggy & James Religa: I didn't initially realise that this event was being
partially coordinated with the Deborah Duchene Fan Club. That mere fact in
itself, indicates just how seamlessly and flawlessly your cooperative efforts
worked out. A class act!

Felicia Bollin: Skaneatles....ah, love it... (I _still_ remember the article
describing your hometown as the only place in America where working is
illegal... :-) ). I'm now planning my Skaneatles retirement already...
(still in my 20s, even, now there's enthusiasm :-) ).

Catherine Siemann: Hmm...on behalf of the Ravenettes, would you ever so kindly
accept my most humble of apologies for having had Deborah autograph a _third_
season cast photograph? I've missed _way_ too many autograph opportunities
(I've missed opportunities with Geraint Wyn Davies _and_ Lisa Ryder, in fact!)
to have let _this_ one pass me by. Honestly, if I could have found a first or
second season cast photograph, I would most surely have used it!!! (For her
part, Deb at least looked amused at the gaffe - she certainly has the gift of
diplomacy, I must say... :-) ).

Celeste Hotaling - Lyons: That was one "killer" :-) booklet that you put
together. Too bad that I was still "off the face of the Earth" while it was
being put together. Oh well...can't win 'em all, so to speak. (Oh, and
am I still "full of beans"? :-) :-) Yes, yes, I see someone somewhere,
twisting the imagery, so I'll not go any further with _that_... :-) :-) )

Cynthia Hoffman: Ah...another of Jamie MR's "French By Committee" It was nice
to finally meet you...and tisk, tisk, for tricking Celeste with the "fire"
bit. You "oughta" have become a Cousin, or more likely a Merc. :-)

Leslie Remencus : Foooey! :-) I'm insufferably jealous that you managed to
make it onto the CTV Evening News. From what I've seen, you've been doing
great work on the S.O.S. campaign _and_ with Due South fandom (the latter was
the subject of the news item - why didn't they talk about FK? Good
question!), so you richly deserved the credit. And here I thought that having
gotten my fifteen minutes of fame on the _Shirley_ show (think Oprah... :-) )
was hot stuff... :-)

Betsy Vera : And yet another of Jamie MR's French readers... It was nice to
finally meet you as well. Now, all that I have to do is meet Joanne Schecter,
Lorelei Feldman, Lynn Messing, and Russ McMillan, and we'll "do that French
rap". :-) (Or, we'll try to convince someone that "fire" means "exit"....hee
hee - guilty grin)

Maureen Wynn: Thank you again for the inspiration behind the special
announcement that I'll be making soon... Hmm...has anyone ever told you that
you look like Lora Haines? (Fooey, now where was _she_, for that matter?
Hopefully, she'll be coming to Ger's play)

And, last but _definitely_ not least, THANK YOU DEBORAH FOR MEETING US
ALL!!!!! (...and putting up with signing a third season cast photograph, for
that matter - whoopsie).

A SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT - hopefully, you're still reading this far... :-)

While sitting in the theatre before the play, it suddenly occured to me to ask
someone from out of town, what he/she thought of the welcoming mat (so to
speak) put out by the Toronto contingent. I didn't actually know whom to ask,
so I did a sort of "eaney, meanie, miney, mo..." My victi, err volunteer
turned out to be none other than Maureen Wynn. I was more than gratified with
her positive response (THANK YOU!), and then whispered over to Lynne Ackerman
beside me and asked "Hey, what about having a faction for the Toronto tour
guides?". She agreed that it was a smashing idea (in more words), and so the
TORONTO TOUR GUIDES Faction was born.

What can the TOUR GUIDES do for you? In short...if you're from out of town
(or even a local who hasn't yet met the rest of the Toronto list contingent),
please write to me, goid@i....... and/or Lynne, gnbv32c@p....... (preferably
both), and we'll set up a fantastic and unforgettable tour of many of the
Toronto filming sites, complete with company provided by the Toronto
contingent. (I also recently found out that we're following in the footsteps
of none other than the original FoD Squad :-) founder himself, Don
Bassingthwaite!). And of course ... the tour is FREE OF CHARGE!

Having said this, I'm hoping to organise a tour for the Sunday of Ger's play -
if you're interested, please write back to me and Lynne. As far as I can
tell, we'll have a few cars available (ie., more than just mine!), so please
get back to us as soon as possible, and we'll start the task of helping you
wonderful folks to paint the town....red. :-)

Cheers,
Cousin Will aka "Grandfather", Founder, Spiritual Leader and Designated Driver
of the Tour Guides.

Hello! Sorry, but when you count ALL series--sf, horror, sit-com and/or drama,
still existant or cancelled--most series HAVEN'T been released to video. And
only a few on video are merely available through tape clubs such as Columbia,
as the original STAR TREk was on the CBS Video Club. Counting those you
haven't named:

CHEERS--still through video club
MASH--ditto
BEVERLY HILLBILLIES--ditto
HONEYMOONERS--club and I think some other mail order outlets
DEEP SPACE NINE--in America, ONLY the 2-hour pilot "The Emissary" is out in
retail stores, and *only* as part of a three-tape TREK pilot package (inc.
also TNG's "Encounter at Farpoint" and TREK's "Where No Man Has Gone Before")
I LOVE LUCY--video clubs and mail order
LOST IN SPACE--ditto

...And maybe a few more than that. But I can off the top of my head type reams
of lists of still popular, ever-rerun-through-syndication series that still
haven't made it to video, from CHARLIE'S ANGELS and DALLAS to PETTICOAT
JUNCTION and MARCUS WELBY, MD. Even England's UFO series, besides being run
on Sunday afternoons on Sci-Fi Channel, is sold in *bootlegged* tapes in
conventions.

Okay, the Reese's Pieces and Vaqueros pins are now up.

Whew.

Also put a link to Edgar's page. It's been there for a while, nobody knew
about it. Edgar was getting somewhat miffed.

We do NOT get Edgar miffed.

My thoughts on the Sony thing--aw, why the heck not? It can't hurt to post
an opinion. It lets them know we're here. And it's better than surfing the
internet looking for macaroni ducks.

It is not, however, as exciting as visiting the decaying Spam project.

My two cents on the Natalie thing--no, she hasn't been bitching this season.
She's just stopped acting like a doormat. She's started treating Nick like
a rational human being, instead of a self-pitying vampire. Which, this
being the object of the experiment, seems a darn fine idea to me.

And . . . ahem . . . but *someone* left the Ravenettes out of the 'evil'
discussion.

Let me educate you on this end of the phenomenon--we may be amused by 'evil'
acts, we may ignore or even condone 'evil' acts, but we are not in and of
ourselves 'evil.' The whole point of being a Raven or Ravenette is to HAVE
FUN, with elegance, style, and as much of a sense of elan as possible. It
doesn't mean we can't do anything, it just means we make darn sure someone
<else> takes the blame.

And we try not to trash the Raven. Too often.

It's in the by-laws. Section fifty-seven, paragraph two.

I have to agree with this. It's my feeling that Nick is more concerned with
the moral/religious/metaphysical aspects of being a vampire. He is more
concerned with absolution from his past. While From Nat's p.o.v. it is all
scientific based, as far as she is/was concerned there is a physical reason
for his condition and therefore a physical answer to it.

This may have changed a little in the 3rd season as seen in episodes like
"Dead of Night", Nat must come to turms with "ghosts" be they real or
imagined. In 2nd season's "Near Death" she wants to deal with everything on
a purely physical/scientific level while Nick was ready to die if it meant
redemption.

I got the idea from "Near Death" that Nick's redemption is in some way tied
to Natalie.

As Jamie and I continue to play pingpong <g>:

Jamie said:

>But he stays. Why? Obviously, there's SOMETHING that he
>wants/needs/desires. And it's either Nat, Tracy, or Reese... my pick
>of the three would be Nat...

And my answer would be none of the above. He stays because Nat makes
him feel that he's not cursed, that he's not beyond redemption. And
because maybe she might help him discover the cure he thinks he's
after. It's not Nat herself that keeps Nick in Toronto, imo; it's
what he thinks she offers him.

>>I don't know where the Natpack gets this idea that Natalie Lambert is
>>superwoman, that she could take LC in a fight;

>Because she has stood up to him more effectively than anyone else on
>the show. Better than Nick has, in fact.

That's because she's not important to LC and he lets her. Whereas Nick
is important to LC. Also, Nick's relationship is obviously different
because LC is his maker, and there's lots of emotional baggage
involved.

>If LaCroix decided she had outlived her usefulness, she would
>live for precisely as long as it took him to drain her. Period.
>Sorry, but that's the way it is, imo

And if Nat wanted to do away with LC, all she'd need is a little
lidovuterine and a stake.

Um, she'd have to catch him first. And who, pray tell, is going to
hold him down while she uses either? I don't think so. I think here
we have to agree to disagree. And that's the long and the short of it.

>Sure, Nat can die; she's mortal. But for LC to simply kill her, that
>would be HIS defeat: admitting that he can't outwit her, can't
>outmaneuver her, can't win in a battle of wits between them.

I don't buy this either.

And he CAN'T. We know this... because he HASN'T.

No, he hasn't because she doesn't matter enough to him to do something
about. And because it would upset Nick if he broke Nick's little
mortal *toy* (using Nigel's language here <g>) If LC really saw Nat as
a threat, that would change real quick. But again, I don't expect you
to agree.

>Yeah? If brute power were sufficient, Nick would be playing
>good-vampire-son by LaCroix's side, and Nat would be dead. Why hasn't
>that happened?

Because LC hasn't seen the need to kill her.

>Again, I have to strongly disagree, because I don't see that love, at
>least not on Nick's part.

>OtL, BmV, NiQ... Nick's got it as bad as any human male could have it
>for any woman;

Again, I just don't agree. I don't see any point in going back and
forth on this. In OtL, he's jealous (in a possessive way, but not
romantically based; just trying to protect his interest). In BMV,
he's feeling guilty that he can't give Nat what she should get in a
relationship, so he gives her what he thinks she wants. In NiQ, he's
had his brain fried, and he's going on what she's telling him.

>But to say that there IS no love, I see as sorta delusional.

And I disagree. Again, I think Nick is too immature and narcissistic
to be capable of love. I strongly object to your calling that
delusional. (If we're gonna get into name calling, there are more than
a few points you've made that I might consider delusional.) I think
Nick may *think* he's in love; I think he *wants* to be in love
because it's so *human*; but I don't think he IS in love.

And Natalie thinks she's in love because it solves so many issues for
her. Kind of like falling madly *in love* with a movie star.
Perfectly safe, totally unapproachable, feels like love, and it can be
a perfect love. Trouble is, it's not real.

>Nick has set Nat in a position (confidante, doctor) where it is her
>JOB to "nag" him; he has actively sought out her "nagging", encouraged
>it,

Again, I disagree. Nick was drawn to Nat because she made him feel
that he had value and worth and decency and humanity, and he
desperately needed to feel that way. I was once in a relationship with
a guy where the only thing he brought to the table was the fact that he
made me feel like I was the most important person on the planet. And
that kept us together for two years. It's a powerful magnet, to be
valued so highly. Imo, a lot of what Nat gave Nick early on came from
that.

And the fighting now comes because after being around him for awhile,
the cracks show, so to speak, and she can't so easily accept his
shortcomings without criticizing. And, btw, I certainly don't blame
Nat for that; Nick has a multitude of shortcomings. It's just that
early in their relationship, she was feeling her way, encouraging him,
making allowances for things; but as time passed, she naturally became
less willing to do so as he showed no signs or only limited signs of
progress -- and frequent signs of *backsliding*.

>Swift and certain condemnation. How do you know?

Obviously, I don't. But I'm entitled to my opinion on the subject, and
I've given it. You're entitled to disagree, but not to tell me what my
opinion should be.

>The worst obstacle to honest debate is the closed mind...

And what, pray tell, does that have to do with the price of tea in
China? If you're suggesting that because I hold a different opinion
than you do, that means I have a closed mind, that's your problem, not
mine. I have enormous respect for your opinion, Jamie, even if I don't
share it. Kindly do me the same courtesy.

>Put enough time and effort into ANYTHING, and it can happen.

Absolutely. No argument. But I don't see it happening, because in my
opinion Nick would not put that effort into their relationship.

And on this, you're completely open-minded, eh?

Hey, I'm openminded on all of it. I can understand and find sympathy
with a variety of opinions, and I even understand a lot of opinions I
totally disagree with.

>Your impression is that LC and Nat could work out any difficulties,
>but Nick and Nat are incapable of it. Doesn't that strike you as a
>tad, well, slanted?

No, because that isn't what I said. I never said that Nat & LC could
work out any difficulties; I simply said I did not think it impossible
for them to have a relationship just because that relationship might be
fraught with conflict. You are the one who said such a relationship was
impossible. You were saying about closed minds? :-)

And what I also said is that we've seen very little of LC and Nat
together, so it's difficult to know what is possible with them and what
is not. Whereas we've seen LOTS of Nick&Nat together, so it is easier
to extrapolate and contemplate how things might be between them in
future. So, no, I don't think my position was slanted. In one case,
we have a lot of available data to go on. In the other, there is
almost no data at all, so far more is left to the imagination. I'm not
saying you're wrong about LC and Nat; I'm just saying that I don't
necessarily agree with you either.

> (BMV, in my opinion, is a classic example of LC making a massive
>mistake. Something he would've known better than to do, if he hadn't
>given in to sentimentality and pain.)

You're right, Jamie. We are indeed watching two different shows. :-)

Lovingly awaiting the next volley. :-)

Here tis. Enjoy! :-)
