Why else would we spend nine hours a day online? ><ducking> Nine? Nine?!?! You only spend a measly nine hours a day online? And you say YOU have no life? Ah, but then, you're fairly new here, aren't you? Allow me to introduce myself. I'm Jamie. I've been here since last August. Twenty-four hours a day. That's right. Ask anyone. They'll tell you. I'm always here. I don't go away. Not ever. I have a disability and don't work, so except for doctors' visits and Forever Knight/list-related trips & parties & events, I'm always home. When I'm home, the computer is on. When the computer is on, I am online. Period. I leave my account open at night when I go to sleep; three or four hours later, when I wake up, all I have to do is roll over, fumble for the mouse, and I can get my e-mail. And that is what I do. Before coffee. Before lighting a cigarette. Before getting out of bed to go to the bathroom. If the house were on fire, I would stop to check my e-mail first. With the exception of my doctors and my lawyer and my mother, everyone I see is someone I know from HERE. There are no exceptions. Everyone I know, I know from FK. When I do go away, for list parties and such, I make arrangements to check my e-mail. So even when I'm away from my computer... I'm still here. I'm always here. I'm never *not* here. This is my home. And you say YOU have no life? Pfeh. You don't know from "no life". Now me, I really have no life. In fact, I am willing to bet that I have the least life of anyone on this list. There is *no one* who has less contact with conventional reality than I do. (A fact of which I am actually inordinately proud...) I am not merely 'subscribed' to the list. I am permanently affixed to it. I am the mildew that forms on the shower curtain, the odd smell that lives in the back of the refrigerator, the irritating dripping of a leaky faucet interrupting your thoughts. I am The Thing That Came To Visit And Wouldn't Leave: I am ubiquitous. And 98% of my life (and 100% of the good parts) are right here. As opposed to elsewhere. So there. What happens -- and I hope you haven't recently eaten, because this is kinda gross --is that the individual little cells explode. You know how when you microwave a raw egg (out of the shell) and the yolk goes kablooey? Well, the yolk is a single cell, just like a single red blood cell. It is a widely used slang term for a curse of bad luck. Screed obviously was using the term to refer to what I call "Vampire Charm" or hypnotism. Casey Stengel (a baseball manager of the 50s and 60s) used to put the "whommy", as he called it, on opposing teams. In the Li'l Abner comic strips, Evil-Eye Fleegle had a variety of whammys (whammies?) for a variety of prices. I'm not sure, but I believe that Evil-Eye Fleegle was the originator of the term "triple-whammy". Whatever the reference, the term seems to be used mostly by low-brow, lower-class, or uncultured persons. I can't imagine LaCroix, for example, using the term. Walli" <gjwalli@m.......> Subject: sony's rating from Magellan Okay, my rant about Sony's webpage and I promise I won't do it again. The Unofficial FK Home Page is pretty cool. We get lots of traffic, lots of compliments, and in general, we have a decent site. Lots are better, lots are worse, but it does it`s job. Magellan, from the McKinley group, contacts me about this award they're giving the Unofficial FK Home Page. And I think to myself, "Hey, this is really cool. Good solid company. Decent award. I think we've done good work. 3 stars is something to be really really proud of." So what does Sony get for a rating? 4 stars. Why? I mean seriously? Not because I'm jealous, which I'm not. They're home page has a different purpose entirely from the fan FK page I've worked on. But what about they're home page for FK really deserves that fourth star? The pretty graphical interface? I dunno. I suppose if they're getting rated on the purpose of they're webpage (which I think is simply to inform fans of upcoming eps and current cast) then they've done a damn good job of that. But if you look at the rating criteria that Magellan has set forth, it seems that there just should be...well...that there should be *more* to the Sony website. Here's what I want Sony do do. I want them to acknowledge the fans more prominently, especially in terms of their contributions to the show and their efforts in helping the Pediatric Aids Foundation. I want to see this info right smack dab on th4e front page of the FK stuff. I want them to list the links to other FK pages, not just generic vampire stuff. Plenty of other shows' "Official" web pages do this. Does Sony/Tristar have some company policy against it? I dunno. Most of my mail concerning this has been totally ignored. They list the fan clubs, so why not the Web Clubs? It seems this would be *good* PR, no? I want Sony to tell me where they got some of the timeline information. I think, personally, that some bright whizpuck found the Flashback Timeline that Valerie did and that I posted on the Unofficial page. And then I think said whizpuck altered enough to do the historical timeline (minus costuming commentary) for their page. The fact that They might have visited, really makes me feel honored. But SHE was the one who figured out some of those hard- to-place locations that happen in one room or are difficult to puzzle out. And JP and the rest of the cast and crew has told us THERE IS NO BIBLE. So who at Sony/Tristar's been talking to JP? Cause that's the only place I can think of for them to get that kind of direct info. (Even NB has problems remembering which episode is which, sometimes, so I don't think the cast is the source of this info at all.) Ah hell. This has gone on long enough. I very firmly believe that Sony has done some really great things for us. They do deserve some thanks for all their efforts. But I think some of the stuff we've been privy to, we shouldn't have been. Some of the stuff we've discovered, found out, been told, is ugly realistic big business. And business is War. If we can't face the realities of that, folks, then we shouldnt' be nosing around unless we're prepared to see it in it's full naked glory, warts and all. I am told that Ribena is often available in Oriental markets, specifically grocery stores catering to immigrants from Hong Kong or Malaysia. One brand to look for is by Smith-Kline Beacham, in Brentford, Middlesex, England. Their exclusive supplier is The Gilway Company, Ltd., 299 Forest Ave., Paramus, NJ 07652. They sell a 32 oz. and 16 oz. bottle, both in concentrated form (and I'm told with a new non-drip cap). The following appears on the label: [Her Majesty's Official Seal] By appointment to Her Majesty The Queen, Suppliers of Lucozade and Shloer, Beechamn Products, Brentford, Middlesex. The ingredients are as follows: Water, sugar, blackcurrant juice, glucose syrup, citric acid, vitamins (C, Niacin, B6, B12), preservatives (sodium benzoate, sodium metabisulfite), natural color (grapeskin color). Nutritional Information per Serving: Serving size 1.5 fl. oz. To clarify: I just happen to think, as I said way back when in my original spoilers on the episode (BMV), that Nick is far too narcissistic (i.e, self-absorbed and not in a good way) to leave room for anyone else. >While I see a tremendous chemistry between Nat and LaCroix, I think >there's an extremely strong tie between Nick and Nat, one that >encompasses not only love but friendship as well. No disagreement there; in fact that's what I said in my prior post on the subject. I certainly believe there friendship between Nick and Nat. I think they are buddies, compadres, whatever. And I do believe that a *friendship* can evolve into something stronger over time. Whether or not theirs has -- different answers on different days, imo. BUT - imo there was immediate sexual attraction (and sparks flying) when Nat and LC met for the first time. I don't think the same could be said of Nick and Nat in their early encounters. (Granted, their first encounter didn't lend itself to that, but from what we've seen of them, IF one wants to argue there is anything more than friendship there, it is something that evolved over time. It was not an immediate *chemical* reaction, as with Nat and LaCroix.) > Of course, that relationship's more than a little strained at this >point -- considering the fact that Nick's been a total bitch to Nat >this season, this is a given -- but there's still that feeling of >intimacy between them. No argument there. >By contrast, the tie between Nat and LaCroix seems to me to comprise >more of a contest, a battle of wills, a struggle for power. I don't recall saying that Nat and LaCroix are friends (wary adversaries is probably more like it); and they barely know each other, unlike Nick and Nat, so *intimacy* is out of the question. They are bound together in the fight over Nick's heart, mind and soul, so I suppose I would agree with you there. >While that sort of power struggle makes for interesting viewing, >wonderful fiction, it also creates terrible relationships to have to >live through. Well, of course sexual attraction alone is imo a rotten basis for a relationship, so I don't necessarily disagree with you there. People can be almost violently attracted to each other, yet spend all their time (out of bed) fighting. Course some relationships seem to work okay that way anyhow; some don't. My problem is that I don't think we've seen nearly enough of LC and Nat interacting together to really know how they would respond to each other in an actual, ongoing relationship. (Which has the advantage that you can write pretty much anything you want for fictional purposes, but when you try to critique the relationship *for real*, you run into problems. At least, I do.) Frankly, I don't really know how a relationship between Nat and LC would be evolve over time (even though I'm writing one. <g>. I'll let you know what I think when I see where this story takes me :-)). >Between Nick and Nat, there's a comfort level (despite all obstacles) >that Nat and LaCroix could never achieve. You see, this is where I disagree with you. I don't think we've seen enough of Nat and LC together to know the answer. It is possible that they are too much alike to easily co-exist; I recognize that. But I'm not sure. And although Nick and Nat are *comfortable* together, imo that will remain true only as long as the status quo lasts. I don't see them remaining together if he ever became mortal, at least not for long. He is, imo, primarily attracted to her mortality, not to her. Once he achieved that, problems would almost immediately set in. Every time I've written a Nick-becomes-mortal story, Nick and Nat end up apart, and Nick eventually goes hunting for Janette and/or LC. So, I guess that's pretty much how I see that situation. :-) (These particular stories have never been posted and probably never will be, because they've never been finished.) >Note that I'm not saying that Nick and Nat are necessarily perfect for >each other: I'm of the opinion that Nat would outgrow Nick's rather >limited outlook in short order, whereas LaCroix and Nat would >endlessly challenge each other. I think that's part of what I was just saying. Or something like it. >But I do believe that Nat and Nick have a far greater chance of >achieving *happiness* for a longer time than any other pairing. Nat >and LaCroix? Too much conflict. Again, I must disagree with you on this. There are relationships that thrive on conflict. My parents *fought* (screamed, yelled, etc., nothing physical) with each other all the time, and yet they absolutely adored each other and were incredibly happy together. My father has a VERY strong personality, and my mother felt that the only way to assert her sense of self was to confront him. Frequently. :-) But they never ceased loving each other, were always there for each other, and never took the fighting personally. My husband and I are fairly similar. We're both very strong personalities; we therefore spar verbally all the time, and for much the same reasons I believe that my parents did. But we don't take it personally, and it doesn't interfere with our feelings for each other. All of which, come to think of it, may have a lot to do with why I can see LaCroix and Nat together. :-) Since we all do bring our personal baggage to whatever we watch. Went to LunaCon in Rye NYC. I brought with me a BOX full of NATPE Forever Knight bags which the Con Comm really loved! Turns out their bag supplier scrapped out on them and I (and all the Fk fans who helped pay for these things!) saved the day for them! They were VERY appreciative and thought the bags were great! Turns out some Lunarians are fans and showed up at my FK Party on Saturday night! There weren't as many FK fans in general at the Con itself but I ran into a few. Never was able to do the booth to raise money for PAF because all the volunteers I had lined up in January cancelled out on me in MArch. Oh, well.... There is another Con in NY area in April called I-CON held at SUNY Stonybrook. I can't go - all my $ is now tied up in going up to TO to see Ger's play and in a down payment on my first home! Yes, the Enforcer is buying a Condo in NJ and I close Memorial Day weekend!!!! YAY! The little Knightie who lives with me (my 6 year old daughter!) is thrilled to have a place with a yard to play in (anyone who was at my FK party knows I live in a mousehole of an apartment! <vbg>). Will keep all posted... CERK Publicity news... The T's are in!! Have mailed out the first batch of orders already. The very nice woman who answered my call told me that the cable company has had a tremendous number of requests for the Sci-Fi Channel within the last few weeks. (I had to grin with FK-pride as I pondered just how many of those calls could have come from one of us!) She gave me the name and address of the people to write to in my cable company to request the channel. Even more amazingly, she actually *encouraged* me (repeatedly) to write! :-) Thinking positively, Chana PS -- alas, it also does lend support to the theory that USA moved FK to the Sci-Fi channel just to increase the Sci-Fi channel's market share. PPS -- Hmmm, now that I think about it -- maybe the woman who took my call is one of us... ;-) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Mar 1996 13:48:31 -0500 From: Felicia Bollin <AriCon@a.......> Subject: Okay, life just officially got strange.... True. But Nat has done more to break through that solid wall of self-absorption than anyone else. She's forced him to see other points of view despite himself; and in his own muddled way, I think that's one of the things Nick treasures about her. >I certainly believe there friendship between Nick and >Nat. I think they are buddies, compadres, whatever. And I do believe >that a *friendship* can evolve into something stronger over time. >Whether or not theirs has -- different answers on different days, imo. Imo, friendship is the ONLY solid base on which to build ANY relationship. N&N have more than that; they've established a certain trust -- to the degree that either of them ever trusts anyone. Which is nothing short of miraculous. >BUT - imo there was immediate sexual attraction (and sparks flying) >when Nat and LC met for the first time. I don't think the same could >be said of Nick and Nat in their early encounters. Well, there were certainly sparks flying, although if you mentioned "sexual attraction" to Nat, she'd probably a) laugh incredulously and b) tear your head off... Which does not necessarily mean that the feeling isn't present, only that you'd never get her to admit it if it was. Regardless, both of them are far too emotionally guarded to ever let attraction (of any sort) become intimacy (of any sort) which sort of precludes anything more significant than friction... of any sort. >IF one wants to argue there is anything more than friendship >there, it is something that evolved over time. It was not an immediate >*chemical* reaction, as with Nat and LaCroix.) Oh, no no no no no. I completely disagree. You couldn't be more wrong. I saw it; I definitely saw it between 'em. There was a DEFINITE instant mutual attraction btwn. Nick & Nat -- which is, I think, the ONLY reason Nick bothered sticking around afterwards. >considering the fact that Nick's been a total bitch to Nat >this season, this is a given -- but there's still that feeling of >intimacy between them. >No argument there. No argument over what? The intimacy, or Nick being a bitch? >I don't recall saying that Nat and LaCroix are friends (wary >adversaries is probably more like it) And the fact is, they make terrific adversaries; they're almost perfectly matched. Except that Nat is a little more self-aware than LaCroix, so in the final outcome, she'd probably win. >Frankly, I don't really know how a relationship between Nat and LC >would be evolve over time (even though I'm writing one. <g>. I'll let >you know what I think when I see where this story takes me :-)). You've read my fiction; you know that my favorite pasttime is taking canon and kicking it into the stratosphere to see where it orbits. <g> I definitely see any relationship between them as being interesting, whatever form it might take. Even within the limited realm of the series, we've watched them develop a sort of mutual respect for each other; the beginnings of realization that both of them are essential to Nick, that he needs both of them, whether any of 'em like it or not. (I'm thinking NiQ, SoB...) Esp. in third season, it's as if they represent the duality of Nick's existence: the vampire half and the human half -- each with its separate hopes and fears, more alike than either wants to admit. But I believe that in this vital way, Nick is equally essential to them; and no relationship between Nat and LaCroix could happen without Nick in the equation somewhere. He is That Which Links Them Together. Without him, there are sparks, but no fire. >And although Nick and Nat are *comfortable* together...I don't see them >remaining together if he ever became mortal, at least not for long. He >is, imo, primarily attracted to her mortality, not to her. Once he >achieved that, problems would almost immediately set in. I think that part of Nick's attraction to Nat is her humanity, the same way part of Nat's attraction to Nick is his alienness. And I think that part of the integral machinery of their relationship is comprised of her need to help him, and his need for acceptance. But I think there's much more to it than that; that the love between them would endure and survive beyond his cure. Now, there would be OTHER problems -- the fact that Nick is in no way prepared for humanity -- the fact that Nat would surely outgrow him swiftly -- but if both of them were prepared to spend the time and effort working out those problems, their relationship could well flourish. Whether or not this would happen is anyone's guess. But I do believe it's possible that they could find happiness despite the obstacles, because the underlying love is *there*. >There are relationships that >thrive on conflict. My parents *fought* (screamed, yelled, etc., >nothing physical) with each other all the time, and yet they absolutely >adored each other and were incredibly happy together. That's a lucky thing for you, but it doesn't necessarily apply on a global level. Many people absolutely cannot stand conflict. They learn to become used to it, to the point where they sometimes seek to provoke conflict where there is none, simply because they don't know any other way... but conflict and the accompanying stress levels literally make them sick, undermining their sense of security and any chance for lingering contentment. And then there are types and types of conflict -- there's the kind where every new day is a challenge, an exciting adventure, to be faced with one's beloved partner at one's side -- and then there's the kind where there is an argument around every corner, where one lives in fear of taking a single step, lest they stumble into a trap... Nick's life as a vampire (with and without LaCroix) has been the latter, and I think he needs and wants the former. Same with Nat, and her search for a cure: always, there's some new stumbling block to be overcome, some new horror to be faced. I think that with Nat's encouragement, Nick's acclimation to mortality could become that grand adventure of new experience for both of them -- imagine what it would be like, introducing someone to humanity: to sunsets and sunrises and rainbows, to ice cream and roasted chestnuts and filet mignon, looking at the world by day through the eyes of one who hadn't seen it in hundreds of years -- whether either/both of them would meet that potential? Another of those unanswerable questions. How many of us truly live up to our potential? >All of which, come to think of it, may have a lot to do with why I can >see LaCroix and Nat together. :-) Since we all do bring our personal >baggage to whatever we watch. Granted, although I do strive for a degree of objectivity in my opinions. Of course, there's really no definitive answer to any of this; the same person can behave completely differently on two separate days, so every situation has an unlimited number of possible outcomes. (That's what fanfic is for...) But as always, the debate is interesting. >LaurieCF >Romani quidem artem amatoriam invenerunt. >Pila in area tua est. :-) :-) :-) Okay, smartass.
