If the fangs were hollow, then we have to assume that there are like hollow
canals behind the fangs, like up in his jaws and head, but such were never
seen in the X-Rays of Nick's head when he was shot in Night in Question.

I asked a friend of mine who's a nurse about this. She said that if a
vampire bit the carotid (or did she say jugular? no, it was the carotid) that
he/she could drain a human body in 4 minutes or less. I'm assuming that in
FK, this whole length of time is not shown because it would take a lot of
time away from the plot. So I'm going to assume that the blood-sucking we
see is the "edited" version. ;)

Of course, the thing is, if you bite the carotid it's gonna be real messy,
but we never see anyone with blood gushing out of their wounds. So mayhaps
vampire saliva has a coagulent in it? (Must make it real interesting to kiss
em...)

I agree with this, based solely on the fact that Nick called Carouches "a
lower form of vampire" and Nick (who thinks taking human life is the lowest
of the low) would not call anyone "lower" for craving animal blood.
Therefore, there must be some kind of anatomical or psychic or whatever
difference *besides* the choice of beverage.

Dingos are dogs. :) Wild dogs. My dog Vixen looks just like a dingo: about
50 pounds, red coarse hair, big pointy ears.

It's impossible that Screed could've been a criminal brought to Australia,
since he is 450 years old, and that preceeds the colonization of Australia.
I mean, maybe he and Vachon rented a boat and went to Australia by
themselves, but Screed didn't get hauled off there for a crime. ;)

Could this be another case of inconsistency in the world of FK? Another
Battle of Hastings? Maybe "dingo" is a slang word of Screed's to denote any
mongrel dog. For consistency sake, that's what I'm going to believe. ;)

I'll check the exact quote, but I'm pretty sure what he said was: "Got me
dingoes (dinkos?) into a squealer that first night, I did." I took that to
mean that by dingoes (sp?) he meant his canines (fangs), and his first kill
*was* a rat. What we really need in the Screed eps is subtitles, like we
get when anyone speaks French. I have better luck understanding the French.

A number of folks have speculated as to whether FK vampire's teeth are
hollow so the vamp can suck blood that way. My personal feeling is that
hollow eyeteeth (canines, as Nat calls them) would drain directly into the
sinuses (yuck!) and that if vampires sucked blood through their teeth, they
wouldn't subsequently dribble their victims' blood down their chins.
However, according to the FK FAQ file, Jim Parriott said after the first
season that the exchange of blood (victim to vamp and vamp to victim) is
all done through the fangs; therefore, they must be hollow. Of course, all
of this probably changed somewhere in the middle of season two.... :-)

I just got off the phone with Jennifer at WBDC-50 in Washington DC.
Despite what the TV guides will say, they will be airing the next two
episodes on Thursday nights at midnight (ie, really Friday morning). This
week will be Let No Man Tear Asunder on March 14, next week will be Night
in Question on March 21.

If you're in the Washington area and want to double check on the
schedule, the phone number is 000-000-0000. I've gotten into the habit of
calling her most Monday mornings since the printed schedule is so unreliable.

Sandra G. wrote some great stuff about vampires bringing someone across
that included:
>LC also seemed to bring over Alyce Hunter in Dark Knight 2 without having
>her drink his blood, as Nick did Serena in second season's Baby, Baby. I
>don't think Perry had Jody drink his blood in Blind Faith either. :)

These instances of people and animals being brought across seemingly
without deliberate intent on the part of the parent vampire is the most
annoying kink in my scientific theory of vampirism. Particularly, if
vampirism is genetic, then human vampire DNA should be completely
incompatible with animals' DNA. However, if the vampire agent (or DNA
mutatogen) works like a virus, then it could be transmissible through
saliva and not just blood, and careless vampires could transmit vampirism
if they didn't drain their prey enough to kill.

Screed bolsters this theory in a quote in "Blind Faith." When Nick asks him
if he's brought a dog across, Screed says (I checked): "Can't clearly
recall--I mean, you know how it is. Maybe a little fast dude, double-double
dry-throat pup banger kind of thing interrupted here and there, and
sometimes if you don't lick your dish quite clean..." (at this point, Nick
interrupts him).

So it seems that vampirism can be transmitted by biting alone, *if* the
victim has a reasonable amount of his/her own blood removed first.

At this point, we've probably gone to more trouble to make sense of this
than the show's writers have....

I remember when I first signed on to this list a couple of years back there was
a raging discussing about how the fangs worked and whether blood could be
ingested thru them and then sent back thru to the victim when trying to bring
someone across. I think the question came up because when Nick brought Richard
across, there wasn't the usual biting of the wrist or even a cup of blood given
to him to bring him across so everyone was trying to come up with a theory. I
remember thinking when I first was just lurking and reading, "Man, they're
trying to take something supernatural and make it work naturally so it makes
sense? Why? " and then the discussions on whether it was truly supernatural or
physical as Nat believes. I was amazed at the intelligence out there, and how
you guys had me almost believing vampires could physically exist!! Now it's
happening again, and just when I thought I had heard everything - wham - new
stuff. Why do they implode in sunlight? You guys came up with almost perfectly
believable reasons!!

You guys are amazing - but, it makes me wonder - how DO you all know so much?

No, really, realistically -- what a funny word to use in reference to this
thread, which is fueled by random conjecture -- I think a Nat/LaCroix
ticket might work nicely.

You'd have Nat: strong yet feminine, compassionate, level-headed, appealing
to the sector of the population who'd love to elect a woman president. And
you'd have LaCroix: a military man, authoritative, willing to take a hard
line on social issues (Welfare reform? Drain 'em all and let the vampires
sort 'em out) and not about to take any bull from petty foreign dictators,
appealing to the sector of the population who believe in a forceful
government presence. Nick and Janette would undoubtedly be involved in the
campaign: Nick could be the outspoken advocate for human rights, appealing
to the sector that wants a champion; while Janette would appear at all the
society functions, satisfying the desires of those who like glamour and
that luscious hint of scandal... and Vachon could pop up here and there
like an analog to Roger Clinton or Billy Carter, stirring things up and
making trouble, being the 'black sheep' of the administration and therefore
making them seem all the more accessible to the common man...

Upon reflection, it's a team that no other candidate or political party
could stand against. Now, if we could just get around that
daytime-inauguration thing, we'd be set.

Words: Re the "sanguiniverous" thing: I honestly don't know if that's a
word or not. I don't actually own a dictionary that lists words that long.
(I oughta buy one. I already know all the words in the abridged ones.)
Mostly, when I need a word and I don't know whether or not one already
exists, I make up a term that sounds good (to me) and conveys the concept I
have in mind by inference and context. There is precedent for this: it's
basically how languages evolve over time. And when writing fiction,
there's a lot more latitude than elsewhere.

I also have a very bad tendency: when a word is over four syllables long, I
tend to start sticking letters in at random, just for the sheer joy of it.

But when actual words do exist, it's considered good form to use them; and
I really would like to know what the correct terminology would be, here; so
if anyone can clarify it beyond a shadow of a doubt, I'd appreciate it.
Humans are carniverous/omniverous; vampires would be...?

And while we're at it: is there a dictionary-defined term for a
human-blood-drinker specifically, as opposed to an animal-blood-drinker?
Inquiring minds want to know.

While our Canadian mortals may not be eligible for the US presidency,
I would like to quote something that might be relevant in getting our
vampires elected: :)
"No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the
United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be
eligible to the Office of President..." Article 2, Section 1, Clause 5
Now, where were they all in 1788? :)

For the record, I started watching DS in its original run when I was FIVE or
 SIX!
Except for nibbling my wife now and then, I haven't developed any vampiric
tendencies! :D

A *big* ditto from me with those sentiments as well!! While I had initial
 doubts about
Nigel's post, please let me say I express those doubts without *any* flaming

 sort of
independent confirmation of his post (sorry for the journalist in me talking!).
Regardless, Teri and I, as BIG FK FANS, wish Nigel and the rest of the cast all
 the
best!

No...a dingo is NOT a wallaby.

A dingo is an Australian feral canid....or wild dog.

Dingos did not exist until after the English came to Australia...they are one
of the reasons there aren't any more Tasmanian wolves...same biological
niche.

I've been following the whole "Blind Faith" thread with a great deal of
interest, and a thought occurred to me:

Re: Raleigh

Nick and Raleigh got together in the late 1800's, right? The purebred dog
was generally owned solely by the wealthy, who would certainly notice if one
of their pets, especially one imported from Germany, went AWOL.

So how in the Sam Hill did Nick stumble across Raleigh...a "stray" purebred
Rottweiler? Wouldn't it have been more historically accurate for him to have
been a mongrel?

Just a thought...

For the record, I as a former listowner and the current listowners can
all confirm that Nigel lurks on Forkni-l. He has ever since October
of 1993. You won't find him on the roster because, like the rest of
the 36 concealed members, he *is* concealed.

Maybe that's what happened with Jack the Ripper. But Nick thought
that Alyce Hunter had died in Dark Knight (he considered her lucky
that she'd died). But Nick also thought that Serena *did* want to be
brought over, but yet we don't see him give her any of his blood (in
fact, Serena doesn't even realize that she *has* been brought over at
first).

I know dog and human DNA aren't the same, but is it possible that there
is some similar cell function in each that the virus would attack that
causes both to exhibit vampire traits? I know in the real world there
have been viruses that have crossed over from animals to humans (isn't
HIV one?). So isn't it possible that the vampire virus isn't species
specific?

Well, if you want Screed subtitles, and you have a fairly modern TV, then pop
your "Fever" tape into the VCR, and set the Closed Captioning function on the
TV set so you can see what he's saying.

Voila! Instant Screed subtitles! And Vachon and Nick and LaCroix subtitles,
for that matter....

The compelling dramatic device rears its head again! But here's my guess.
Nick is living in a solitary cabin far from much of civilization, in an
area where people hunt for game. He describes Raleigh as a good hunter.
Hunting dogs do have some instinct, but to be useful to humans, they must
be trained. I figure some nobleman went out hunting with his dog and
disappeared or was killed on the hunt, leaving the well-trained and
friendly Rottie masterless and hungry.

Has anyone read "The Hound of the Baskervilles"? I haven't. How does Doyle
describe the hound(s?) in question? The dog may have had to be a Rottie to
match the book.

I would go with Seska for Janette. She's the former Maquis fighter and
lover of Chakotay who has now defected over to the Kazon camp. The dynamics
between those two are reminiscent of Nick and Janette. Chakotay's new life
as a Starfleet officer doesn't sit well with Seska, who has tried to
alternately destroy her former flame or lure him back into the mercenary life.

I don't agree with it being psychological; I took it as physical.
When Screed says, "smell her, V-Man, fruit in her veins," Vachon slams
him up against the wall but not before inhaling <deeply> to see if he's
right.

And it fits with other FK lore. We know that vampire senses are
vastly heightened, and just because they've quit eating such things as
apricots and cinnamon doesn't mean they've quit smelling them... quite the
opposite.

If you can only eat one thing -- blood -- your palate may become
very refined indeed for that one food. Palate is mainly a function of
smell to begin with -- for vampires to make associations with other
natural scents, like Vachon's apricots and callalilies with Tracy, makes
sense to me. Lacroix gave a funny send up of an oenophile's description
of a vintage wine, describing the bottle of blood he's brought Nick at
the end of Games Vamps Play.

I mean, I know a Hershey bar from an M&M blindfolded any day. In
fact, I know a KitKat made in England from a KitKat made in the States --
very different chocolate. And I'm a mere human who also eats, however
reluctantly, other things like broccoli....

Well, as Butch said to Sundance, looking down from high rocks at
implacable pursuers... who are those guys?

        I know, I know, industry/FK types... I think I'd rather they were
*real* vampires tallying up volunteer take-out dinners.

And how could I leave a possible comment about "concealed
members" untouched?... well, I will. <Tippi, your turn....>
