Well, it's been fun reading about everybody's dream team, but I'm a Cousin to
the bone - where LaCroix is concerned, no one but Nigel Bennett will do!

This business about the Sci-Fi Channel is terrible news - I don't have cable,
and I also don't want to support USA Network in any way! Guess I'll have to
break down and buy that VCR (yes, I'm one of the few people in the "first"
world who doesn't own one)!

Good question, my guess this depends... I've been playing around with the
idea of getting some false teeth from a dentist friend of mine. But I've
never considered wearing them for a driver license picture. Anyway, if
you had dentures with fangs they certainly can't ask you to remove them...

>*hey* wait a minute.... I'm a *cousin*. I can do *whatever* I want!!! I pay

Whoa! Cousins HAVE TO PAY taxes? Gee, I guess even Cousins have to pay
homage to the IRS.

I'm going to be waiting for your next message the next time you get pulled
over and the police has a look at your license... he will get a good laugh.
Keep those fangs handy, if the next cop that pulls you over DOESN'T have a
sense of humor... watch out! You may have to use those fangs!

I guess.

I noticed you didn't include one for LaCroix.
I would like to suggest John DeLancie. Someone else suggested him for another
role, but I think he could just extend how he plays the character Q from TNG,
tone down his obnoxious behavior and put in a more menacing presence and
you would have LaCroix.

A hearty second from a definite Treqqer! Though I still think Nigel
Bennet himself would do the best job. One question though: why would he
need to tone down his obnoxious behavior?

Subject: Gemini tape tour is underway!

The first stage of the GEMINI AWARDS TAPE TOUR has started! And since
many people seem to have missed the first announcement and are thus not
in our loop, I thought I would repost about it, and start the list for
the SECOND TOUR.

Information: Being a nice but fairly busy person, I thought I'd make the
offer of something that was done last year for the Due South listfolks:
instead of copying for an endless number of people, I would instead offer
my tape for a Forever Knight Gemini Tape Tour.

How this works: I will take names/addresses of people interested in
receiving this tape. It will go out to you in order of receipt of request
in this way: I shall mail it (via priority mail--cost is $3) to the first
person on the list, who will IN A TIMELY MANNER watch/copy said tape, and
mail it immediately onto the next person on the list.

This way you may make copies of pieces or of the whole show if you wish,
or just simply watch it. Invite friends over; have a party! Zap past the
boring parts, or watch the whole thing, whatever strikes your fancy (Due
South won a LOT of awards, so if you're also a DS fan you might want
especially to get in on this; and while he didn't win, Ger appears on
camera a good deal of the time. Sorry, but the award Nigel won was not
given during this broadcast). But it will only work if everyone cooperates
and does a minimum of a 3-day turnaround, and mails via priority mail.
You'd all have to agree to that up front to get on the list for the tour.

So, who would be interested in round 2? It will be at least 3 and closer
to 4 weeks before the second round could start. We have 4 tapes
routing right now, to almost 30 people; however, be aware that the owners
of those tapes may remove them from the tour after the first round (no
one has required a commitment of longer that that, and if they want to
keep their tapes once they come home that's up to them).

Email me (kingv@u.......) if you'd like to be included in the second
round. I'll keep a list, in order of receipt, and when the tapes come
home I'll start it up again.

My family won't be able to receive Sci-Fi until, hopefully, later this

Subject: My letter to the editor

Hi,

Because several people have requested it, here is the test of my
Letter to the editor, published this morning. Does this make me a
published writer? (I know, don't quit my day job!)

I am writing in response to Daniel M. Kimmel's recent Channel
Scan column, "Writing of letters not always futile". Although I was
pleased to see coverage of recent campaigns to save television
programs, Mr. Kimmel has done one campaign a disservice by
generalizing about these movements. The campaign to save "Forever
Knight" has broken new ground. Although Mr. Kimmel suggests
that full-page ads in trade journals and fan presence at television
conventions are now the norm, "Forever Knight" fans are the first
and only campaign to invest in such an ad and made an impact
at the NATPE (National Association of Television Programming
Executives) convention because no one had ever made such an effort
before.

Many television fans contend--and recent articles in major television
industry journals concur--that the current ratings system is not
accurate. Only by writing letters and by initiating what Mr. Kimmel
calls "clever stunts" can viewers let television producers and
programmers know that they are indeed, watching. The "Forever
Knight" campaign has tried to find ideas that can do good as well as
gain publicity. Thus, "Forever Knight" fans have organized blood drives,
donated products manufactured by the show's sponsors to food banks
and homeless shelters, and collected over $8,000 dollars in donations to
the Pediatric Aids Foundation, in the name of "Forever Knight". Even if
the campaign to save "Forever Knight" is not successful in saving the
show, it will have succeeded in many other ways.

Well since so many people are writing poems for FK, I thought I'd do my
Cousinly duty (what? Cousins have duties??!) and post a very brief list of
words that rhyme with angst. Note that most are slant rhymes, Emily
Dickinson's best friends.

Angst/Against, Angst/Pranks, Angst/Franks, Angst/Pants, Angst/Dansk,
Angst/Wanks (for the jadfe list only), Angst/Yanks (may also only be for
jadfe, since I *don't* mean it to stand for Yankees), Angst/Rants,
Angst/Cranks.

I *challenge* someone to use the word "pants" in a poem! G'head, just try
it! ;)

You know you been reading too much FK-L when. . .
you are watching the movie "Problem Child" and Richard (I forget his full
name but he's the guy that plays Kramer on Seinfeld) is in a psychhospital
for murder, kills the doctor, assumes the doctor's identity, goes to leave
in the doctor's car, and pulls up to the guard. The guard asks him about the
new patient (him) and he replies that the new patient is "One brick short of
a building." I was ROTFL because it reminded me of our lengthy
discussions about Nick being a 'brick.'

I want to thank all of those who wished me luck with my comps. I think I
passed and am trying to think positive so that I don't have to take them
orally. I was very exhausted on Saturday from driving to Tucson and
taking the comps. In fact, I was half tempted to pull off in Casa Grande
and crawl into my trunk to take a nap. However, I own a '95 Honda Civic
and it'd be mighty cramped for space - at that time I really wished I
had Nick's caddie.

Or is this not quite what you had in mind WCT?

How about:

There once was a vamp with tight pants
Who was just to angsty to dance
But Nat researched it and was sure
That a quick two-step was the cure
If only Nick would give it a chance

So, Wicked Cousin Tippi, what do I win?

Thanks for the advise, Tippi, however....

..I've decided to send the cards to JF, RP, and KK. I should have just sent
them without mentioning it -- "if a tree falls in the forest and no one is
around to hear it, does it make a sound?" One card, one fan. Not a whisper
in the forest...

and besides <It might even make you feel like you were playing by *their*
low-down sneaky rules.> Ummm... Actually, it wouldn't, and it doesn't.
Mainly because from my perspective it is simply not *that* big a deal! I
think some things get taken *waaaaay* too seriously...

Anyway, there were two for, two against, and I decided to be my own tie
breaker. And it came to me, "Am I asking for advice, or permission?" Can't
imagine why I would do either -- except I have been under tremendous pressure
at work, working too many hours, and was disappointed at the outcome of our
efforts (not to say that they won't continue). I was tired when I posted,
and I promise I won't bother you guys with "suggestions, please?" again. To
be perfectly honest, when you reach my age you realize that you can't assume
someone else's star shines any brighter than your own... either by words,
deeds, or position. We merely all have different perspectives. I'm going to
send my little $1.50 words of wisdom and no sleep will be lost tonight or
years down the line. Revenge? A couple of cards??? Hardly. They are
merely an "opinion stated"... if anyone feels a need to be sweet instead, you
can always send "thank you" cards ;-)

Okay, kind of off topic for this list (sorry!) But I don't know
where else to ask. Does anyone know if there are mailing lists
out there somewhere for "X-files" or "Nowhere Man"? Please email me
if you know...

Just a friendly little message -- make the filking stop, please! I
can't breathe any more, especially after reading the "Mr. Ed" one. You talk
about ROTFL -- geez.
Also, I'll be setting myself nomail tomorrow night, as I'm going to
Italy for spring break. I'll be gone for about a week, so when I come back,
be prepared to see a plea for any new developments in the SOS campaign.
I am aware that many readers of JADFE are on this list, and I would
like to tell all you nice (twisted) people that part 2 of "Homecoming" will
be posted as soon as I review the corrections from my beta reader upon my
return.
Now, as to FK casting, here's the strangest thing. I was thinking
about FK as done by the Rocky Horror Picture Show Cast, with notes.

Nick: Barry Bostwick (good-looking, sorta angst-y, but no one does
it better than our own GWD)
Nat: Susan Sarandon (she'd be better as Janette, IMHO, but hey,
she could do Nat -- she's got the tough/soft thing down pat)
LaCroix: Tim Curry (he could do it -- he can be quite menacing --
but *not* in fishnets or a bustier -- although that has JADFE possibility)
Tracy: Patricia Quinn (probably reaching, here)
Captain Reese: Jonathan Adams (the criminologist from the movie)
Vachon: Peter Hinwood (dye the hair, or a wig -- definitely a pretty
face, and he's got the <blink blink> thing down from RHPS)
Screed: Richard O'Brien (good ol' Riff Raff; he could do it, too)
        Urs: Little Nell
        Schanke: Meat Loaf

The only person uncast from RHPS is Charles Gray, the Narrator. Who
he could play, I have no idea. Any suggestions?

Suggesting this sort of cast is probably sacrilege, and I wouldn't
normally do it. But -- when I'm running at a 19-hour sleep deficit, anything
goes, and *nothing* is sacred. ;)

Heck, I might actually write a script for it, complete with parody
lyrics. When I can find time, that is. Hmmm. "Let's do the Blood Warp again."
Nah. Doesn't have the same ring to it. I'll work on it. :)=

I've been thinking about this message from Fred since I first read it.
And then the subsequent messages, especially from people unhappy because
their cable company doesn't carry SciFi, and I got to thinking <a
dangerous habit, I know; I'll try not to make a habit out of it>.

Basically, my thinking is as follows:

Fact #1:
The sets have been struck; Paragon offices (in Toronto and LA) are being
vacated; the creative people involved have scattered; and god only knows
what they are doing to us with the last episode.

Fact #2:
We have lost the series before. And we got it back.

Fact #3:
*NOBODY* around here has said *ANYTHING* about throwing in the towel.

So, they may have won the battle, but I don't think any of us are willing
to concede the war...

Which means, we need a plan of attack designed to reflect our current
situation. That being: USA <insert adjective of choice here> owns two and
a half seasons of FK. And like Fred said, if USA only runs it on SciFi,
the show has all too good of a chance of falling into complete obscurity.

So, as far as I can see it, our most pressing concern right now is to
push for whatever option is going to 'bring across' the most new fans...
and the SciFi channel, ain't it. Galling as it is that USA owns the
strip, there is nothing we can do to change that. So what we have to do
is convince them it would be in their best interest to run it on USA
*instead* of SciFi.

Which, sorry to say it, means more letters...and like Fred also said
*sponsors too.*

We are in this mess because Kay Koplovitz at USA started a chain
reaction that put us here (not to discount TriStar's contribution to
this mess), but as far as I am concerned, she owes us! At least this
much! (Not that I *honestly* expect *her* to see it that way...)

I think it was Laura (Apache) who said that it was only after Highlander
was sindicated that she became interested in it...same goes for me, and I
am sure a lot of us. Maybe we should point out the fact that Highlander
and FK have *very* similar audiences (hell, a lot of us *are* HL fans),
and play up the fact that a daily two-hour block of HL and FK would be
televised Nirvana! Good for them (for one thing it would certainly help
get us off their back) and good for us...more fans mean more voices.

A lot of us have said we are here for the long haul, and right now, I
think this is something that really requires our attention. More fans,
even after the series is cancelled, can generate a demand for movies at
the very least.

And merchandise! I mean, how many of us own the first season of
Highlander as offered because of increased fandom *after* the show hit
syndication? I mean, really, they are offering Renegade now...USA's
exposure (and not the kind they give us on Silk Stalkings) could be just
what we need the most right now. Not that I like having to be beholden to
them for *anything* but as was pointed out (by Laurie, I think) if FK TV
Movies are made in the future, it is a pretty good bet that USA will be
at least one of the forces behind it (as long as they avoid anymore "Let's
get naked"-type comments from LC, I can probably take it).

I know we are all tired and frustrated, which is understandable, we have
worked hard and been treated horribley and been forced to swallow a
bitter disappointment. But if we are going to keep fighting I think this
is where we need to start.

Sorry for the length...

Just my thoughts on the matter...Alora

According to some, very few cable companies carry the SciFi Channel.
This ishow we encouraged our local cable company to carry the SciFi
Channel--we wrote, "we want SciFi Channel" on the return portion of the
bill--this is all at which they really look. In addtion, we called the
cable office at least once a week. We asked some variation of the
following question: "Are you planning on carrying the SciFi Channel?"
We had the Channel is 6 months--so start now. Now, we are working on
getting Comedy Central.

*Gulp!* This is getting even weirder than i expected. I may not survive...

Captain Reese: Jonathan Adams (the criminologist from the movie)

Nope, Jonathan Adams was Dr. Scott. The Criminologist and the Narrator were
the same person.

Subject: Next Year's Geminis

Now *this* is a bandwagon I can jump on! :-) All this talk about
casting big-name Hollywood types in an imaginary theatrical film is
diverting, but I gotta say I cand neither imagine it nor countenance it
as a serious idea. Like the _Trek_ folks, if such a thing ever happened
it would have to be *our* stars who made the jump, or it just wouldn't be FK.

But as for who ought to be nominated for what eps from this year...and as
I understand it (which could easily be mistaken; it's very confusing) the
eligibility period goes from spring to spring and closes a full *year* or
almost that before the award year, we've seen what we have to choose from
and it includes late *second* season. THen again, if the guys and Deb
were up for C&C, it must be a little later than this, becuase that aired
last May. I dunno. So I'll restrict myself to season three thus far and
reserve the right to substitute one of the final four, as was suggested
by someone already; and ignore my rambling about eligibility period above
'cause I obviously don't know what I'm talking about. :-)

Therefore, I would like to see up for consideration:

Ger "Night in Question" or "Fever".

Cathy in "Fever" or "Dead of Night". (Point of order--how do they judge
between "lead" and "supporting"? Do we have two lead actresses now, or
is Lisa considered supporting? I think they've been about even in terms
of lines/screen time over the season as a whole; I remember one year both
Jackie Burroughs and Mag Ruffman were up in the same category for Avonlea.)

Nigel in "Night in Question" or "Sons of Belial".

Ben in "Fever", even though he'd have the grave misfortune to be up
against Nigel and it wouldn't be fair. :-) At this stage in his career,
a nomination alone would be very nice.

Ditto for Lisa in "Strings" or "Avenging Angel" (the Cathy Disher school
of being really good in obnoxious stories like BMV :-) ).

Fred for music in "Fever", "Games Vampires Play", or "Avenging Angel."

Alan Simmonds for direction of "Fever".

Ger for direction of "Human Factor".

Bert Dunk for photography of ANYTHING.

Chaim Gilad for sound in ANYTHING, especially "GVP".

Later!
