I have about 50 new FK waves waiting... lots of Janette, and Nick, and Schanke, too. And LC, *of course*. ;-) I'll let you know when the next collection of FK waves are online. The proper term would be Dame, and I would like to claim that proudly! After all, in Great Britain it is a title of great honor just as Sir is. August female personages of the stage may win that appellation, such as Dame Judith Anderson who performed a creditable Hamlet in a performance I was fortunate to see when in high school. And I' ve heard of it used in some cloistered convents as a title for finally professed nuns in England - a badge of honor, to be sure. Okay, okay, I suppose it's also a version of "madame" (there goes that argument) and I know the term is less than august in the US, but... I like it. Nuff said. I wasn't on the list for 1st and 2nd season FK so I don't know if this was discussed.>> At the time the episode with the "We watched Rome burn," remark aired, it was discussed as a clue to LaCroix's past. During all of first season, we were not told or shown anything else about LaCroix's origins or life before 1228. He was very much the vampire of mystery. Bear in mind the first season LaCroix is only seen in about two-thirds of the episodes, and only in flashbacks and Nick's imagination. We didn't even know his first name (which only heightened his power in the imagination, IMHO.) There was much speculation onlist at the time and during the hiatus between seasons about how old LaCroix was, his birth nationality and what he did as a mortal. Karin Welss wrote fanfic in which LaCroix's mortal life was as a soldier named Menelaos during the Hellenistic era, a pretty close guess. LaCroix's Roman origin and life dates were not established until the second season Pompeii episode with to which you refer, so that his "Nero" remark only becomes a discrepancy in retrospect. I didn't like the remark even at the time, however, because I thought it was a cheap shot--pulling in a reference to an event even the most historically ignorant viewer would have heard of. I like more subtle historical references (like the ones in Unreality TV), but then I am a history buff. Your question illustrates something interesting about the show, which is that the overall artistic impression it makes shifts a little depending on what order one has first seen the episodes in. People who start off seeing third season and work back actually see a different Forever Knight than people who were introduced to the show during second season, to say nothing of people who saw it in broadcast order from Dark Knight on, not to mention the people whose first Nick was Rick Springfield, or the difference between seeing the Canadian first season episodes right off or after getting familiar with the American versions. It's a bit like an artist painting the same scene several times with different palettes. I stumbled on Forever Knight midway through the first season reruns. Consequently, I saw the latter half of first season before the earliest episodes. It wasn't until I joined this list that I realized that LaCroix was supposed to be dead. What's a brain cell? Time? Huh? %-} Those who said they thought CD was in *both* "Double Exposure" and "Coven of Darkness" are absolutely right. (You think that's something, Denis "I'm Too Intense for Mere Mortals" Forest was in FIVE of 'em...) In "Double Exposure" she was Cathy, Ryan's doomed-girlfriend-of-the-week who got splattered all over her apartment about halfway through the ep 'cause that's where she went to call for help after leaving her purse (with her wallet at keys in it, *duh*, in the bad guy's house.) (SHe has played several people with her own name, most of whom seem to wind up dead...) I liked Cathy a lot (until she pulled the dumb/panicked victim stunt of not going, oh, say, to the cops or to Curious Goods), although she had some seriously scary mall-rat hair. The character seemed to be about 19, dressed in very cute trendy miniskirts and such; the Infamous Mall Rat Hair that you will occasionally see mentioned refers to the 'do where they poofed up her natural curl within an inch of its life and put a great big black Madonna bow in it. Scary biz. In "Coven of Darkness" she was Crystal, the lieutenant to the mistress of the black coven, and VERY creepy. Total 180 from Cathy. Someone said she was only in it for a few seconds; it was a bit better than that. She didn't have very many lines, but some *fabulous* nonverbal interaction with the big bad boss lady that makes it pretty clear she intends to replace her. As I understand it, she got called for WotW because some of the same people made Friteenth and they remembered her from that; this *must* be the ep they were thinking of, 'cause there are definite seeds of Mana's "Malzor is SUCH an idiot!" attitude here. She's also very definitely *blonde* (color, not behavior), even more so than the lighter highlights we've seen on Nat this season. Jack flipped it on one night and said to himself "Oh, cute blonde girl...waitaminnit, that's *Catherine*!" She was also in black leather jacket and mini at one point, and made up within an inch of her life; looked like a Raven regular, which is *really* odd. She really does play a fabulous bad girl; I wish we could see it more often. I'm a loyal NatPacker and of course love her dearly, and she isn't someone you want to really piss off; but I hope we get a chance to see Cathy play someone more on the dark side soon 'cause she really really *can*. Just to amuse ourselves once (and not that we'd want things different, it was just an academic exercise), Amy and I were wondering how it would have been if *she* were Janette... Yes, it was full of light-hearted interactions, which I guess this is a matter of opinion, but I don't like. First of all, he's okayed us to get a group discount of 15% on tickets. Secondly, he said the best day to go to the play would be the Thursday. And there's possibly another reason to be here for the Thursday, which I'll explain in a bit, after I explain about the play. The play is part of a yearly theatre festival and, as such, is not like usual performances of plays. At festivals they usually show things or do things that are not "business as usual", and Taming of the Shrew is no exception. The actors don't rehearse with each other, they only rehearse their >lines< with the >director< separately. Each actor is responsible for working out their own stage directions and bits of business by themselves, and they never even see the other actors until they come on stage together for the first time on the first evening of the play. That makes the Thursday night the liveliest, most innovative, and most surprising evening of the three, since by the next night the actors will have started to get to know one another and how the other works with them, and that will make the performances slightly less interesting. By the Saturday night the performances will be the most "predictable" of all, and thus the "least" interesting. The artistic director said he'd definitely strongly recommend that people attend the Thursday night performance. So far only Ger has been confirmed in the cast. The actress playing Kate will be chosen this coming week, and the artistic director said he'd call me and let me know who it was going to be. The other parts won't be cast until the beginning of April, but the artistic director said everyone in the cast would be well-known Canadian actors, names I'd recognize. Now, as I said previously, there might be another reason to choose Thursday as the day to go to the play. There's a very, very slim possibility that Ger may do something else at the festival on the Thursday afternoon, that we can also attend. I don't want to say too much because it may not work out, and I don't want anyone to get disappointed. But it's just something to keep in mind when we're choosing the day for people to attend. I do realize it's probably easier for people to get away over a weekend than during the week, but in this instance I would say it's really going to be worth it to choose Thursday as the day to go to the play rather than Saturday. I'm sending this to both the regular FORKNI-L list and the DEBSPLAY list because I think public thanks are in order for last weekend. A lot of people worked very, very hard and contributed their own time and money to bring it all together, and they should be acknowledged. So, forthwith, my "honour roll" of thanks: First and foremost to Laurie Salopek who started everything going in the first place, organized the collection of ticket money and, most importantly, gave us our own list to do the planning on. Things would have been immeasurably more difficult without that, and without her there may not have been a Deb's play weekend at all. Everyone owes Laurie a HUGE vote of thanks! To Lana Soward for her gorgeous and professional badges. THREE people came up to me at the intermission of the play and asked about our group just because they saw us with our beautiful badges. And you have to know Toronto (people just >don't< walk up to other people and ask about things like that) to realize how much they must have been impressed with those badges! I took the opportunity to tell them about the show (none of them had heard of it before) and urge them to watch it and then write to our local syndicator about it... unfortunately I don't think anyone had any flyers with them at the church, but hopefully the people will watch the show and feel moved enough to look up the address and write letters. At any rate, it was the badges that initially sparked their interest. To Celeste Hotaling-Lyons for the extraordinary job she did on the Book we presented to Deb. It was a masterpiece!! (And deserves a capital letter!) And thanks also for making the black & white copies for all the contributors...that was really sweet of her...I really treasure mine. I heard from a third party who's a friend of one of the other actresses in the company that they were all >enormously< impressed with us, with the way we handled ourselves, and most especially with the Book for Deb. Deb of course was overwhelmed with it...and for good reason! And it's true what she said - this list is enormously talented, and the Book was just one example of that. (ObFK reference: TPTB have no idea what power they've unleashed in us <g>! Their so-called cancellation will crumble like dust in our wake!!) And thanks to Laurie Cohen Fenster for making a suite available to everyone for gathering and for watching TV. Even though there were a few problems with hotel security <g>, the fact still remains that Laurie CF did make the suite available, at her own expense, and it was an invaluable addition to the weekend. (The problems with hotel security were distracting, though, and I'm writing a long letter to the hotel expressing our dissatisfaction with a lot of things, that included.) To Jamie MR, Webgoddess, for the Warm Fuzzies she handed out to everyone. I think the whole weekend was a "Warm Fuzzy", myself, and so Jamie's Warm Fuzzies were the concrete representation of that. Now everyone at the weekend can see why the crew loved them so much and made sure they each "adopted" one! To Valerie Meachum for the Mardi Gras necklaces and doubloons - the people on this list are just so darn >generous<...in all kinds of ways! This truly is the best list of all, and that's because of all the wonderful people on it. Thanks also to the drivers who made their cars available for the locations tour...such as it was <g>. (I guess you had to have been there to understand!) And thanks to everyone who participated in the weekend. Without you, there wouldn't have been any weekend, any celebration, any FUN!! One of the best parts of this or any other fan get-together is meeting everyone in person and getting to know them, and I met some of the greatest people in the world on the weekend - some for the first time, others I'd had the pleasure of meeting previously. And my abject apologies if I've forgotten to mention anyone important (as I usually do). There wouldn't have been as wonderful a weekend without YOU, either!! Okay, everyone - now pat yourselves on the back for a job well done! A message from Lynne Ackerman in Toronto (or, as we like to call it, "Hollywood North"!) Via Internet: gnbv32c@p....... I think part of the problem here is the fact that listmail is dropping VERY slowly (up to two days behind, in some cases). I'm pretty sure that someone else... Ted, I think? ... already posted the cd tracklist. I think I remember it dropping yesterday. I'm also pretty sure that the letter he got was the same one I got from Mark Banning -- a form letter thingie. So what I would basically recommend is that EVERYONE interested in buying the CD email Mr. Banning/Crescendo at BuzBanzai@a....... -- because if they're compiling any sort of 'e-mail loop' over there, you'll be on it -- and you'll get the latest data available. (I've been told that a large volume of incoming e-mail to that address is probably not a problem, so write away!) That email address is also available on the Save FK web page, by the way; and as soon as I get the chance to dig through my old mail and find it, I'll get the track list up there, too. One, because it had Callum Keith Rennie in it (he's fast becoming my fave character actor), and two, because it had an interesting plot (to my mind) I loved the fact that the guest star was not completely bad but had a good side. I agree that it had a trashy scenario to revolve around. But aren't parts of life really trashy. Oooh, my opinion again, I really dont like the first season (i think it stunk actually), though I do like Only the Lonely. But then again that's just my opinion. Although I do likke the 2nd season a lot better then the 1st, to my mind I wince every time Janette comes on with a hideous hairdo. But I do like her character (and i love the ep Bemyvalentine). However, even with as much as I like the 2d season (thanks Nance!), I am slowly going through Vachon withdrawal. wwwwaaaaahhhhh!!! He's not gonna be back until a couple of weeks (nooooo!!!). And what's this I hear about BB being difficult to work with??/ ooh, ooh, gossip! Toni M. Ma97ad14@a....... ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Feb 1996 12:58:40 -0500 From: kkr@g....... Subject: loop 110 Hey, all ... A few random thoughts ... I will be glad to fold cranes. I plan to get VERY thin copy paper, and print it with black-printing-on-white of the FK logo, with "SAVE" above it -- which will make white cranes with black markings. This isn't the "official" logo -- close, but I did my own lettering on "FOREVER" as well as the "save". Might as well up the ante! I will send the cranes to Viper, but will also make extra to send in the letters to the Japanese SONY folk -- NOT forgetting to mention that I'm sending most to make a mobile, of course! I liked Kayla's letter very much, and will adopt some of the ideas/themes from it. Since Birmingham is famous for our Japanese Gardens (done by Murai) and authentic teahouse, I might see if I can use something from that to send them .... And RE: stripping. Gosh, EVERY syndicated show aims for that! This is where they make a good deal of their money back. And, as been noted on AOL, although stripping CAN be done at 65 or 66 shows, the MORE episodes you have to strip, the MORE money you can make when stripping it ... this might be a good point to put in the letters! k, aka karyl ...... ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Feb 1996 13:15:22 -0500 From: "Sharon A. I'm not so sure about that. Ger said at the Weekend that USA bought it with a mind to hopefully produce a couple of seasons. Also, they were quite upfront about "Airwolf" when it moved to USA--there was never any question that that was being done to fill out the syndication package and that it wouldn't be continuing past that. Plus my sense from the NATPE reports is that TriStar was *ready* to go with a fourth season, and that plan got scuttled at the last minute when USA dropped it. I do think there's more to this than just ratings. I just don't agree that the plan all along was to cancel it in mid-season. In other news, my cable guide ran a little blurb on Forever Knight. It's very weird that it should show up now. It mentions the cancellations by CBS and USA, but strongly implies that the fan following has kept the show alive despite that. I'll post the content of the article later tonight if anyone's interested. Sharon -- Sharon A. Garrett" <susang@v.......> Subject: Sharing our sorrow(long post) Just a brief moment of sharing-- Does it bother anyone else when someone posts a message asking Nigel or TPTB to respond to something? This isn't their list, this is OUR list. They're just eavesdropping on our conversation and, from what I gather, this is the way they want it. We know they scan through FKSpoilr out of curiosity and ForKni-l, too, but usually in response to an episode; if you're a fanfic writer, you can understand the hunger for feedback and the need to find out whether they got what you meant them to get. Much of the time TPTB don't get a chance to read individual messages until LONG after the fact, if at all (if they have any sense at all, they're on digest and weeding one message out of a digest is a ponderous process at best). So the best way to reach them, if you need to, is through direct mail or e-mail. Other than that, vent if you feel the need. The third season is over, sets are being destroyed, Paragon is closing--it's a wrap. We're going through a grief process Emily Dickenson described as the 'Hour of Lead,' 'First the chill, then stupor, then the letting go.' It's exascerbated by the various bits and pieces we've gotten about the final episode--which won't air for THREE months. Until we know for certain, let's not panic. The episode has been wrapped and post production is being done; we can't change this. What we can do is gear up for the many events that will be coming up this year, continue to present ourselves as well-mannered viewers to Sony (which is the only address accepting mail from us, since Paragon will be closed in Toronto by the end of this week and I gather LA may not be far behind and TriStar will have to find somewhere else to forward our mail), let syndicated stations know that we'd like to see FK stripped and shown not only on USA or SciFi, tell sponsors that we'd be watching their ads if FK were still around, and keep FK alive by making it our own. And it IS ours now. Maybe it won't be ours forever (hopefully we can get someone to bring it back in the not-too-distant-future), but I, for one, am inclined to take as much advantage of this as possible. Let's continue to honor the cast, crew, and staff by contributing to Pediatric Aids and other charities. Let's fiction ourselves into oblivion. Let's meet at cons to discuss and debate and laugh and quote list to our hearts' content. This list has lived without new episodes of FK before and will do so again, but it can't live without the interest and participation of the people who come here to share. So, let's talk amongst ourselves. If they want to listen, they'll get an earful. But it's <our> conversation. And it's <our> list.
