Although there have been several good episodes, with Janette gone, there is no pull for Nick for his vampire side except for LaCroix - and he's definitely fighting that. There was a definite sense of humour lost with the los of Schanke and Janette, a sense that being a vampire wasn't always the hell hole Nick seems to think it is now. We all miss the relationships that were so well done before. Episodes like "Amateur Night" and (oops I forgot the name of the 2nd season opener where Nick was charged with murder coz LaCroix was setting him up) in which Schanke not only showed himself a really good detective, but a good friend too. You're never gonna see an episode like that with Tracy - and her family life is definitely not one that would be envied by Nick, like Schanke's, to help push him towards humanity more. We also miss episodes like "Faithful Followers" and "Feeding the Beast" in which Nat got to be strong - not just tired and hurt all the time. I think USA did a great diservice to FK in the changes they made - but it was better than no FK at all. OK, I was going to be doing my weekly FK-bag-giveaway post anyway, so here goes: Laurie CF very kindly fronted the money for an ad the SOS campaign took out in _Electronic Media_, an industry trade magazine. This cost us (or her) $4750. The issue was timed to coincide with NATPE, the annual convention of the National Association of Television Programming Executives. Seven listmembers, including myself, also traveled to Las Vegas (where the convention was held) and handed out bags and brochures on our Save FK efforts to the participants. The bags had, of course, to be manufactured and purchased, and the total cost, including shipping, was approx $4000 (I never did get exact figures, because I handed the bookkeeping over to Lana shortly after NATPE). Laurie, in a fit of unreasonable generosity, offered to fron the money for these as well. The brochures were all donated by generous listmembers, and those of us who went (we're the NATPE 7 you keep hearing about!) covered personal costs (airfare/hotel/meals/taxis/etc) out of our own pockets. We have, as of 2/13, $6316.37 in donations to cover the costs of the ad and bag. This is roughly $2000 less than their actual cost. Now, I wouldn't want anyone who honestly *can't* afford it to send more money to the fund, but if you can afford it, it would really be unfair to stick Laurie with 1/4 of the total cost, don't you think? The address to mail your checks to (Made out to Laurie Cohen Fenster) is: SOS-FK/Friends of Forever Knight NATPE Fund [Address removed] And since this particular rumor has been floating around, allow me to dispell it. (Cover your ears, I'm gonna shout.) THIS IS NOT A SCAM! The bags and ad exist. You can buy the Jan 22 issue of _Electronic Media_ from any major bookstore (Barnes & Noble & Borders have both been mentioned on-list as sources). The NATPE 7 really did got to Las Vegas and spend a very long day explaining to everyone who would listen to us (and quite a few people who wouldn't ;>) why FK deserved another season. We even got written up in the special midweek NATPE issue (not available in stores) of _Electronic Media_. If you don't believe, me, check out my webpage (URL in sig). It has photos of the NATPE 7, and a link to a webpage that's nothing *but* photos of the NATPE 7. And if you want physical proof of the existence of the bags (or just a souvenir of our efforts to date), send me a self-addressed 9x12 envelope (not padded, please!) with enough postage for two ounces of first class mail, and I will *mail you* one of the bags, one of the brochures (while they last-- I don't have as many of those), and a copy of the article from Electronic Media. I am *suggesting*, as a matter of courtesy to Laurie, that anyone who wants a free NATPE bag, brochure, and article, contribute at *least* $1 toward defraying the costs. Of course, if you think this is a scam (Sure it is. I'm willing to risk Federal charges of Mail Fraud, a felony, for a couple $.32 cent stamps, right? :-{ ) don't send a penny. Risk $.55 in postage (or, for those of you outside the US, 2 international postal coupons) and the cost of an envelope, and I'll mail you proof of the existence of (at least) the bags. Mail the envelope to: NATPE Goodies [Address removed] Anyone wanting answers to further questions, e-mail me privately. No offense to new listmembers, but most of us know all about the NATPE phase of the campaign, and I'd rather not waste List bandwidth rehashing 'old news'. Since I'm watching them all so close together (probably a bad idea), I notice that Nick really yo-yos between states, especially in his relations with mortals. Sometimes he's filled with self-loathing (why would any woman want me, I'm so evil), other times he's pleased that he can help them with his special abilities (helping Katharine Barrington escape her husband's murderer, helping the East German family get to the West). One thing that's not working effectively for me is this idea of Nick falling in love with every woman who crosses his path. I can't really figure out if he's in love with Natalie or not (I know he's *supposed* to be). I'm thinking specifically of the vampire novelist in "Stranger Than Fiction". While it was a very fun episode, and I was cheering out loud when Nick used what's his name's fantasy against him, it was very hard for me to believe that Nick would have really fallen for the novellist, and even harder to believe that Natalie would have congratulated him for it. And where did he get all this self-restraint when it comes to Natalie? He seems to give in really fast to all his other infatuations/lust affairs. I can't figure out why Natalie puts up with him (aside from we need to have tension in the series - will he bite her or not?). > (oops I forgot the name of the 2nd season opener where Nick > was charged with murder coz LaCroix was setting him up) in which Schanke not > only showed himself a really good detective, but a good friend too. "Killer Instinct". I thought it was a wonderful episode! I was glued to my seat trying to figure out how long Nick was going to put up with his situation (imprisoned, his apartment searched, etc). He was very strong, and so was Schanke. > We also miss episodes like "Faithful Followers" and "Feeding the > Beast" in which Nat got to be strong - not just tired and hurt all the time. I > think USA did a great diservice to FK in the changes they made - but it was > better than no FK at all. "Faithful Followers" was weird, but Natalie's part was good. There was a sense of conspiracy between Schanke and Natalie to protect Nick (although Schanke doesn't know the real reason why). In one of the episode critiques the comment was made that Schanke was unbelievably dense not to have figured out what Nick was (in the episode where Nick was being hunted). I think Schanke is just a person with a very secure world view, and enough contact with people who aren't in touch with (real) reality that he can brush off whatever doesn't fit into his personal cosmology. While Natalie loves Nick, she love the Nick that wants to be human, the human part of him trying to come through again. She tolerates the vampire in him because it is a part of him (much as we tolerate the sports nut inside our significant others) but I don't think she truly UNDERSTANDS what he feels as a vampire. Otherwise, she wouldn't continually try to get him to do things which are physically impossible like not taking any blood at all. This is why Nick fell so hard for Emily, finally, a soul mate. However, he did pull back - he did restrain himself - especially when he had every opportunity to bring her over. He doesn't even consider it with Natalie because she has not concept of what his life is like, and is afraid bringing her over would totally change her as it has some of his other "children". I think he believed that if he brougth Emily across she would not have changed as she already had that understanding. I also think the only reason Natalie "applauded" the situation is because he beat the lonely vampire part of him by NOT bringing her across and making her forget him. That to her not only left him available to her, but proved his humanity was getting stronger. Also, to prove Nick loves Nat, the end of "Human Factor" where he struggles with the words to explain why he can't go the route that Janette went. In his way, (poor dumb darling) he was saying "I love you too much to try that". Brings a tear to the eye doesn't it??? I mentioned to the PC that I hoped that they would continue to carry FK in their fall line-up. And that they would have to specifically ask for the fourth season because it was uncertain as to whether TriStar was actually selling that season or not. I received a letter back from the program coordinator at WXIN Fox59 (surprise, surprise!!). She said "In regards to Forever Knight, I just got off the phone with the syndicator and he said it will not be returning for another season. Our contract will expire in September." I guess this is actually old news, but I know that people wanted to know what the responses to their letters had been. I did send a telegram to Kay Koplovitz at USA back on January 1st, but I've not seen any response to it. ----------------------------END OF MESSAGE------------------------ Falcon Storm: Historian: DFW International ***************************************************** "He's not so bad once you get to know him." My birthday is Sept. 30. And my parents won't allow me to tell my age but I'm very very close to 16. Thank you so much Toni for the goodies. Toni C. Holm I mean. The bag is so big. I thought it was a little tote bag or something. But it's not. And thank you for the copy of the EM article. And the picture of Jon Feltheimer. Now I can make a dartboard!! <G> Cool brochures. I'm having my Dad bring them over to the Island. I mean Catalina. He works there on the weekdays. So if anyone goes there everyonce in a while just look for it on the town bulleton board. I brought someone across last weekend. She is so eager to see the other episodes. She's not a Cousin. DARN!! And I think she's a Knightie. DARN again!! No offense Knighties. I'm an ex-Cousin. I would still be a Cousin if I wasn't a Merc. She's only seen NiQ, MBiaV, and Fever. But I think my machine messed up taping Fever. I'll have to check. Not to worry everyone. She's fully prompted on our situation. I fell like a general telling her pilots were to bomb. <EG> I like that thought. She knows where to mail and what to mail. I'm still in the process and bringing across some of my other freinds. I'm planning to make more copies of the flyer and put them all around school. Oh boy is that going to be a mess. I can just see it now. A new class just for writing letters to save the show. Have everyone in school talk to their contacts. Have the the news crews showing children pickuting at the Tri-Star building, shouting,"Bring back the Knight. Bring back the Knight." <Giggles> Oh well this message has gotten long enough. Because that's what Nick wants. In every word he speaks to her in the "Only the Lonely" flashback, he is disgusted and repulsed by his vampire self. Which reminds me, I can't tell on the tape, what does Nick write on Natalie's birthday card (obviously disappointing) in that episode? > Otherwise, she > wouldn't continually try to get him to do things which are physically impossible > like not taking any blood at all. This part's a puzzle to me too - *is* Nick in general following Natalie's prescriptions?
