For stuff set in modern, urban settings, Squeeze (any CD) works well. Especially for a series I'm working on for another 'zine, where my main character is a teenager (he's a Squeeze fan). Or, if I'm trying for a mellow mood, Whitney Houston. Or the sound track from "Jewel of the Nile". And Maggie Sansone's work (Mist & Stone is a favorite) melds well for lots of stuff. We know it's a show worth saving but TPTB only seem to understand money. After stewing about this all weekend I have to say I am PISSED.( Excuse the language.) Tri-Star/Columbia, the financial power behind the show, is making money up the wahzoo with "Jeopardy " and "Wheel of Fortune" for example but is too cheap to fork over the extra money to keep FK on for a fourth season. They were paying for the whole budget until USA stepped in with their cut. Now that they are gone, there is a shortfall of, I believe, $250,000 per epiosde that Tri-Star doesn't want to put in. They make that kind of cash with ONE showing of the above mentioned game shows. But think they can make enough money by FK stripping it with only 70 eps. Greed knows no bounds. They could be making up the shortfall on merchandise of FK alone, if they only knew. To all those listmembers who talk of requests for episode tapes from other fans don't tell us, tell Jon Feltheimer et al. Tell them what a gold mine the show could be if they continued it. IF we can show the financial viablity of continuing FK, IF we send them information concerning demographs and fan response and they still cancel it then we know it wasn't because of ratings. If the bottom line is all these industry people understand then we must give it to them. But it should also be made clear that Television is not just about commerance, that consumers don't give a rat's tuckus about formulas, and marketing. They- we want quality Television. We want something to look forward to ever week, we want something to appreciate and talk about. That's how you get viewers to watch your shows and that's how you make money. I should also suggest people not talk about how their dead realitives and pets are signing letters. Someone from TPTB may be lurking on this list now that they know about us. If not we need to get someone to lurk and listen. I hope someone does read this post and get a clue. The commericals don't sell a show, the show sells commericals. whew! Knightclubbers: Those of us who think Nick could better "repay humanity for his sins" by getting a gig as a performer in a nightclub (I'll leave it up to your imagination as to what *kind* of nightclub!). Cuisines: Those of us *Cousines* who fancy themselves as "food for the immortals." ;) (Or at least for one immortal in particular.) *And* I have a great new Janette faction, but if you haven't seen The Human Factor, it's a spoiler, so mail me privately and I'll tell ya. ;) Wicked Cousin Tippi, a Cousin with Nattitude ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Feb 1996 22:12:27 -0800 From: Dianne Therese DeSha <desha@b.......> Subject: Re: new faction ideas ;) Tippi offered: > Conquistadors: Those of us who can't figure out why Vaqueros/Vaqueras call > themselves Spanish cowgirls/boys when Vachon was really a Conquistador. > (Wasn't he?) There is some sense in that. But then, there's a difference between letting Beasty out to play and letting Beasty play in -controlled- situations. Me, I like to make sure there's some kind of shoot-em-up arcade variety game on hand for when I've had a really crappy day. Right how, hubby's PC is housing both Doom and Hexen. I like Doom 'cause I can put it in "unkillable" mode and just mow them down. After a few hours of killing computer critters, I feel much better. <evil cackle> Granted, what constitutes -controlled- circumstances WILL vary between humans and vampires... <wink> Beasty, IMO, contributes a lot to a person's determination and drive. The survival instinct, if you will. And, as someone mentioned earlier in the pile of digests, the more you recognize and accept Beasty, the more at peace with yourself you'll end up being. I *like* Eastern philosophy, I think there's a lot to be said for it's principles... While on the subject of vampire theme songs, I think Laura Brannigan's "Self Control" is a good vamp theme song. Too bad it's not on the current playlists... Jon Saul: >Dan simmon's book on vampires and Dracula I'm inclined to say...Children of the Night. That's the only title that immediately comes to mind, anyway. Woman gets child from Rumanian orphanage, brings him back to the states and then discovers the kid goes through blood like, well, water. heh heh. Yea, kewl book for the "neat" factor. I've got it hanging around someplace. I'm not a doc either, so I can't verify how accurate the med-stuff is in the book, but I did enjoy it. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Feb 1996 01:16:12 -0500 From: Allison Percy <percy91@w.......> Subject: Philadelphia area flyers Just in case anyone thought things were lagging... I've made up flyers with information specific to the Philadelphia viewing area. They give airtimes on local TV (KYW-TV 3) and on USA. There are a few lines at the beginning that aim to bring the readers across -- I tried to make the show sound too compelling to be missed! Then, of course, the flyer has the ubiquitous addresses and phone numbers for them to write and call. Plus information on the Save Forever Knight campaign (web page, e-mail digests, snail-mail address, etc.). I paid a extra few cents for each copy to get the flyers printed on blood-red paper. Worth every penny, and very eye-catching! If you live in the Philadelphia area and would like one of these flyers to copy & distribute in your neighborhood, let me know off-list and I'll send one to you right away. I've been hitting my Center City neighborhood, but it's a big city out there! If just a few Nielson families find these flyers and decide to give the show a try this month, those ratings points might jump up! In the flashback where Nick and his playwright friend roll around backstage and blissfully bite each other, she talks about what she's "seeing" after drinking Nick's blood. He asks her what she's seeing and she describes scenes from the Crusades; Nick confirms this, and it seems to be a given between them that she can experience *his* experiences after having drunk his blood. So, unless this happens only when a vampire bites another vampire, the biter does absorb the memories and maybe the personality, feelings and "existence" of the bitee. It wasn't clear if this was a permanent effect, or merely how the donor tasted -- the flavor that goes away when the blood does. (If it's permanent, a vampire could develop some serious identity problems! Or at least have to think awhile before figuring out whose memories they were flashing back to.) I guess this means that Screed knew a lot more about rat existence than I ever suspected. *And* that every time Nick drinks cow's blood . . . oh well. It must be very relaxing to have all those images of pastures, and munching grass. :) (But not those dairy farm, assembly-line milk factories . . . brrrr.) Having written all that, I realize that Nick didn't describe anything he saw after drinking her blood, so maybe she had a special talent for "seeing" his life; or maybe he just didn't mention it. I hope none of this is totally off-base -- I've seen the very first three episodes and season three only. If anyone knows what the deal is with seeing things from the bitee's life, I'd love to hear about it. I'm not arguing good vs. evil, I'm simply acknowledging the part of me that likes the darker side of life. It is when the beast is not acknowledged, IMO, that it becomes "the Devil made me do it." I take responsibility for all of my actions. The beast makes me strong and helps me to survive. It is a part of me. I'm not possessed by it. On that note, (and because I'm needing an OBFK here ;-)) I do not think that 'The Vampire,' as he calls it, is a separate part of Nick. It *is* Nick and he needs to accept it IMO. This is the impression I also have of first USA, then TriStar's, attitude -- that we made a neat little splash, but that we are more of an annoyance than a force to them. All that counts are the ratings, and we have absolutely no idea if all the folks who picked up flyers or responded positively when we were face to face with them, have actually written, or would even continue to write after one batch of letters. I know I got people at work to write, but that was a one shot deal because they are not fans and only did it because I asked. I can't push them to do any more (the general attitude was rather "smirky", as if I was doing something cute, but ricidulous for an adult). >It seems to me that a real "Phase 2" effort must concentrate on raising the ratings, more than on further letter-writing to TPTB... the key to getting ratings up is *publicity*. People who have never even heard of the show and might be interested will tune it in to see what all the fuss is about> I think a "bringing across" party would be a great idea to convert people, if any of you have some prospects to invite. Personnaly, there are few people I could invite who would respond to coming over and watching FK tapes. This list has been the first connection I've ever had to a large group of people who actually like much of the same kind of literature and television programming that I enjoy! But others of you may have better prospects. <It would be great to crack the "big guys" and get written up by TV Guide, the NYT, EW or whatever.> Yes, I'm still trying to get Jeff Jarvis to blink by sending a package of the most intresting information directly off our list... so far no response. I originally wrote to a reporter in the Dallas Morning News as well, and never got a response. But I think I will send him a similar package as well. Its only time and stamp money, and *maybe* one of them will find it of interest enough to write back... <try putting broadcast info on your flyer suggesting when and where people can watch the show.> Did that. <Target small local newspapers. Write a letter to the editor -- small papers often will print almost anything. Place small classified ads. You'd be amazed how many people read those. > I've also sent a package of info to the Observer, a local, rather weird paper that goes out to every bookstore and college in town. The Observer offers a free classified insert on Thursdays if you send it in on a page clipped from the paper. I'll do that this week. <The idea should be to try to attract the attention of as many people as possible to the SOSFK effort, the show, and the times it can be seen, and urge people to watch. Inevitably, we'll hit some Neilsen customers. A broader scope is needed to attract new viewers, and that's what we need now> Agreed! But I'm *still* going to write again to those people in high places, just to not let it go totally slack. If anyone has additional "people" sources you haven't already tapped, do it now. Its at times like this that I wish I had more outreach, more connections, but I don't. However, there are some of you who probably have numerous contacts through church or clubs or associations -- if you haven't already prodded them, now is the time! I was very disappointed that the HorrorFest in Dallas got postponed because the timing was perfect to reach people. The event has been moved to April 6th. Jennifer Mingee suggested that since we now have time to arrange it, we should actually set up as vendors to push FK. I think this is an excellent idea. I have a combination TV/VCR which we can set up to play FK all day, and hopefully introduce people to it who might not have seen it. Yes, that is way past the cut off point -- however, as Jennifer noted, we can still be pushing for new fans to write new letters and try and get some *FK movies* if we can't get the 4th season. We can't just let everything go now because TriStar is hardnosed. Fans of Alien Nation got their characters back on screen, so can we! Lets see a little fire, folks... I don't >think so!!! You're right because "murder" is actually a legal term to define the unlawful, deliberate killing of human beings. However, humans *are* mass/serial "killers" of living beings, whether it be for food, sport, survival, the government, etc. One's opinion of what humans or vampires do simply depends on one's personal beliefs. Is it wrong to kill for food? Is it only wrong to kill humans? Is it wrong to kill a vampire without due process? ;-) The FK vampires bring to our present North American culture the human beliefs of Europe from centuries ago. But are those beliefs actually any different than today's society? Nick's guilt and self-hatred supposedly lies in his Catholicism. And apparently, Nick only considers "murder" in the legal sense as being wrong. LaCroix sees humans as a food source, and the killing the same as most humans (and Nick) do with cattle or deer. (BTW, Nigel said at DOWII that LaCroix considers humans as food -- no more, no less.) After writing all this, I'm wondering: If a vampire is not human, why would the laws for humans apply? If Nick becomes human again, can he be held responsible for murders committed during his vampire days? Should he turn himself in to the police for a judge and jury to decide that? Would it be Nat's legal obligation to turn him in? And the main question: If you were a jurist, how would you decide? (Forgive me, please, but can a rich, handsome man get away with murder in today's *civilized* society? ;-)) Oh no! I'm now imagining Nick on "Night Court" with LaCroix as his lawyer! Two Texas Longhorns did a truly nauseous version of the Texas Aggie fight song :-). From the party quote list: That was bad. We're not gonna get much better. [Insert rendition of Texas A&M Fight Song] Yeach! Well, that was hideous. You get the idea :-). Hey, Linda and I never said we'd sing it *well*. Having to sing it at all has given us cause to angst with the best of the Knighties :-). BTW Linda, I did burn the lyric sheet after getting home :-). Thanks again to Cousin Suk for letting us invade her house! It was a great party! ObFK: After some discussion with Sherri Godsey yesterday, we're considering doing an FK table at the upcoming HorrorFest convention here in Dallas. However, none of us have ever worked a convention before. We figured on setting up a table with flyers, maybe some pictures, and a TV/VCR in order to play episodes for folks. Are we on the right track? Any suggestions as to other cool things to do? What do con goers expect to get from booths at a con? Among the three of us, we've been to a handful of Star Trek conventions. Any and all suggestions would be appreciated!! We need advice!!! Also, if there are any other folks in the Dallas area who might be interested in the table (Don? Vicki? Perri?), please give me a holler. Thanks! Y'all are the best!
