Lynn Chatelyne@a....... ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Feb 1996 16:21:30 -0500 From: Apache <lf@c.......> Subject: anti-heroes and bionic/supernatural folks Please forgive me if this went through before: I sent it about two days ago and it never appeared, as far as I can tell. It's about Cassie Carter's thread-questions concerning the attraction of anti-heroes, and the attractions of supernatural strength, especially when it is covered with a veil of real or apparent "evil." -- L. > Cousin Alm wrote: > Why are we attracted to so-called antiheroes? Perhaps because they > express a side of our nature that we either cannot or will not, yet > wish we could. Just a quick thought or two: I think we like anti-heroes because in fiction we get to control the extent of their wickedness. In fiction, they are Byron's Corsair with a a thousand crimes and one good deed, and we get to focus on the one good deed. In real life, even if they are beautiful and deadly -- "mad, bad, and dangerous to know" -- they are well out of control and likely to be as destructive of other people as Byron himself was. And as unlikely to suffer any remorse at all as he was. Bionic people and vampires in FK have in common that they must be created by others who were originally human (so they are exotic subsets of human existence), and that in that creation some weakness is left in. The heel by which they held and dipped, so to speak. It seems to me to be a similar impulse to the anti-hero one: in fiction, we can have our deadly peril calibrated so that we can love it, even indulge our own fantasies of being powerful and compelling. In acquiring that strength -- new bionic parts or a new life as a vampire -- we do not acquire strength out of all recognition. Instead, it is if not a crippled strength, a vulnerable one, and we can easily project our own vulnerability into this new context. For me this translates into a powerful imaginative attraction to Vachon the active vampire and LaCroix the master vampire that is tied to a powerful sense that the FK character I'd most like to be in real life is Schanke -- a happy, effective, flawed person whose universe centers on a really solid family. (Unfortunately, I'm more like Nat, but let's definitely not get into that.) That got lost in >second season. And got lost for one major reason--the return of LC. The focus shifted more to Nick-LC-Janette, probably partly because people kept saying they wanted to see more of the vampires. But I've been thinking about first season recently and I would venture to say the Nick-Nat-Janette triangle was more than "romantic". To me, it was more a pull between mortality (Nat) and vampirism (Janette) and the attractions of each *lifestyle* or *morality* rather than a personal *romantic* pull in each direction. Although it was clear very early on that Nat cared about Nick, I think he purposely tried to avoid regarding her romantically until Only the Lonely made him realize that he did have feelings for her of that nature. The strength of the first season was almost "myth" in nature, the struggle between "good" and "evil" if you will. *Issues* were more important than the *individuals* to some extent; at times the characters acted more as metaphors for certain philosophical views (but as expressed within the confines of the characters). Janette was a viable reminder of some of the things Nick finds attractive about being a vampire. Nat in some respects was a tangible representation of his goal (mortality). With the return of LC in second season, however, things degenerated more into character studies. Moral viewpoints and philosophies took a back seat to an extent. It may have added more "realism" to the universe, but it also lessened the impact of some story issues But there seemed sometimes to be the problem of loss of character too (characters written to suit the storyline). Sometimes, instead of seeking how an issue could be fit to the character, they tried to fit the character to the issue (there's a difference, imo). Personally, I think it was a mistake to ever have Nick act on his feelings for Nat. They should have avoided it, imo. >I think they're sorry they ever introduced it in the first place >because it restricts Nick's ability to go with the neck of the week. Yes, I can see where they might think that for that reason. I don't, however, think it was a necessary element to even introduce. >*why* has the danger to Natalie in a relationship like this *never* >been addressed? Well, she was almost dinner in Sons of Belial, but to some extent that wasn't *Nick* and she can console herself to an extent that that wasn't *him* (it was nice to see her frightened by it though; I'm glad they did that much in the writing of that ep). But, really, they *haven't* explored the "romance" between them that much except in a few eps like Only the Lonely and Be My Valentine. Really, if you want to look at it this way, they've only been *jointly* romantic since BMV because in OTL Nat kept Nick at a distance when she didn't let him kiss her. >How about a scene where he vamps out when he kisses her. Yeah, he's been shown vamping out with women of lesser acquaintance that he has shown less feeling for. But, if you recall, in second season's Stranger Than Fiction, Nick was able to control visibly vamping out with Emily Weiss. So maybe it's partly a matter of him having more control. He certainly seemed to in kissing Nat in BMV. But then they've yet to show them getting really "hot and heavy", in which situation I would expect Nick to have control problems. But then I'm not for a Nick-Nat romance as I don't think the focus of the show should be on that. >I can't believe we're 2.5 seasons into the thing, there is a >relationship between them, and this has never been addressed. Well, as I said above, I don't think the relationship has been very "overt" until BMV. Maybe Nat is getting bitchy because of this lack of "romance" in her relationship with Nick. :) >How about the aging question? Now there might be another reason for Nat's crankiness. She's invested four or five years into trying to help Nick to the extent of not pursuing finding another *mortal* man to have a relationship with (Roger doesn't count because she was using him to forget Nick and try to get back at Nick; maybe even make Nick jealous). But I'm not sure what kind of "aging" story could be done. Unless Nat wants someone to bring her over, she's got to decide whether she wants to throw away years and possible happiness with some mortal for Nick since I don't see her curing him anytime soon (The Fix notwithstanding). >So we're left with a frustrating, superficial Nick-Nat relationship >that should and could be *so* much more than TPTB are giving us. I'm sorry, but I don't see FK as a *romance* like Beauty and the Beast, as an example. It's the mortal/vampire, good/evil dilemma of Nick's, his struggle to not give in to his "evil" nature, the moral issues that he must confront and deal with that were the original focus of the show and still *should* be (although they've been "diluted" in each successive season to some extent). I have *never* watched the show for any romance (although I certainly don't mind seeing Nick get romantic with *anyone*)--whether Nick and Nat or Nick and Janette (I'm not an Immortal Beloved either :) ). I still enjoy the show, but I have always thought first season was the best for reasons outlined earlier. But even in its somewhat "diluted" state, FK still manages to present interesting, imaginative ideas that stimulate the thinking and imagination, which, to me, is worlds better than something like Chicago Hope or N.Y.P.D. Cassie Carter writes: >Does Nick's "condition," and his need to contain it, speak to the >"beast within" each of us? I would think so. I would imagine all of us have some secret desires or other feelings that we don't act on for various reasons. I would venture that most of us have wanted to kill someone else at least once in our lives, but most of us don't act on such feelings. In fact, if we are raised to value life and other people, we may even be appalled at ourselves for having such a desire in the first place. >Do we really have "beasts within"--and if so, why do we think so? Yes. We can think so for two reasons--the fact that we are a part of creation and logically could be assumed to have connections with the basic tenets of other life on this planet and the other reason is cultural bias/conditioning. As an example of the first thing, if say two people are trapped in the desert or in the middle of the ocean, it's possible that one will try eat the other to survive. But this can be a basic survival instinct that we share with all other living creatures on this earth. Animals might not term it murder; the human may due to cultural conditioning and feel guilty about having eaten the other person. >To what extent does Nick's sense of guilt--his feeling of being >abnormal according to human standards--reflect the condition of >humans, at least in Western culture? I don't know if it should be limited to Western culture. Don't a lot of the world's religions preach that men have "fallen" in some way and have to strive to become "better"? I don't know that most of us feel "abnormal", but I would expect that most of us have at one time or another felt like we don't belong in the human race. >And if we identify more with the uncloseted beasts like LaCroix >and Janette, why? Well, I find Nick the most interesting myself. I can accept Janette because she seems to live her life as she sees fit and doesn't try to impose her views too strongly on others. I hate LaCroix because he thinks his way is right and should be embraced by his children, whether it's right for them or not. But I don't know that either LaCroix or Janette are "uncloseted beasts". They keep their vampirism secret from the world, not show it publicly. I would guess that those who find LaCroix and Janette more interesting like them because they seem free to do what they want. >What are the philophies or idealogies involved in FK's construction >of "the beast within"? Well, obviously there's a heavy Christian emphasis that the FK vampire is evil (even LC has been shown to be afraid of a cross), that "the beast within" is to some extent not of human making but something outside. LC considers his beast an improvement that makes him superior to humans. Nick, because of moral conditioning and feelings, views his beast as evil and something to get rid of. Janette seems to be somewhere in the middle. She accepts her beast, but doesn't seem to view it as either a way to lord it over humans or a deadly evil. >What assumptions do we hold about human nature that makes FK's >version of vampires so appealing to us? The FK vampires exhibit a lot of feelings that aren't that different from humans. Sometimes we might like to be "out of control" (as it seems that the vampires don't always have control of their desires for blood). On the other hand, sometimes we might like to have total control (as when the vampire hypnotizes someone). We might also like to have the vampire's sexual attractiveness. >What do we believe about ourselves? That's a toughie. It probably has as many answers as there are personal belief systems of each individual. Although I guess most of us consider ourselves to be above animals--in intelligence, capacity for emotions, perception of a higher power, etc. These things are colored to some extent by our cultural beliefs and upbringing. >What do FK's vampires have to do with what we believe about >ourselves? They remind us that we have a baser self? One that we normally surpress or release only under what we consider safe conditions. But in the more "issue" oriented episodes, the FK vampire (especially Nick) also points us to the things that are the best about ourselves (our capacity for love, self-sacrifice, being the best we can be against all odds). --Sandra Gray, forever Knightie --tmp_harkins@d....... ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Feb 1996 18:11:35 -0500 From: Felicia Bollin <AriCon@a.......> Subject: A quick question re: webpages I don't have enough memory for Web access via AOL, but I think I may be persuaded soon to join a local provider which does, for at least their free trial period. This issue may have played a role, but I've always thought that there was something more behind his motivations. In "Queen of Harps" he is falsely accused of murder and *forced* to go fight in the Crusades. Who knows what he experienced in the Crusades themselves. Fear, betrayal, loss of belief in the motivations of the Church and the nobility he served... any one or all of these might have led him to be more open to trading his soul for the promise of immortality and power. I was yelling/harping/nagging at the Nick-like person in my own life the other day after having had it up to *here* with their refusual to believe that they *can* change their life for the better and give up an addiction, and while my tactic was not necessarily a good one, and while the person may not have "heard" me clearly, it was the only response I could give at that time. I love them so much that I just wanted to *slap* the sense into them, and I think that's what Natalie goes through much of the time. Tough love ain't easy to give. Especially when you've been going 'round and 'round with the person for *years* through their own ups and downs, watching them make glorious bursts of progress followed by enormous and often devastating steps backwards. And it especially ain't easy to give when they *cling* to their dark world-view no matter how much hope you try to give them, or how much you try to convince them of all the good *in them* and in the world. It's hard. You can comfort, support, love them all you want, but you can not *do* it for them. It gets frustrating. And sometimes you (Natalie) end up taking that out on the person who needs you most (Nick), because *you* can't be the strong one all the time, and because it's so painfully obvious to you what they're doing that's self-destructive, and that *they* don't or won't see it. I know that much of this has been unintentional on the part of the writers, but I also know that it rings very, very true to Real Life. Wow! So much for my "quick" comment! I guess in short, yes Natalie's making some mistakes, but she's also doing a lot right this season both for herself and for Nick, especially "calling" him on his failures, and his character does seem to appreciate it. It would also help enormously if the writers would let Natalie be the strong, *fallible*, compassionate character she could be, and stop wimping around with all of the new changes this season and find a gosh-darn-it *direction* for the show again! If Sandra's post is "canon," I suspect I might be a Knightie. I fight against the notion of a "beast within," but I still seem to be drawn to characters who are fighting that beast (hence my fanaticism for Jim Carroll--see my web page). Can anyone else help me clarify my identity? (My closest approximation so far is "die hard"--but I do identify most closely with Nick . . . while still being especially fascinated by Janette . . . and simultaneously hating and loving the wickedness of LaCroix. I also identify with Nat to some extent, but I don't especially love her as a character. I haven't figured out what I think of the new characters yet, but I'm starting to like Vachon . . . and, oh yeah, I never cared for Schanke much--except as comic relief.) Let me ask for your opinions on this one. Does LaCroix have a conscience? When it comes to killing humans, he certainly doesn't seem at all bothered. This could mean that he either doesn't have a conscience or he doesn't think that killing humans is wrong. I vaguely remember him making a comment to Nick about his "human conscience" (with great disdain), which also seems to imply that he doesn't have one himself. However, he does seem to have concern for other vampires, and to be personally involved in ensuring their welfare (I won't specify - the incident I am referring to is still under spoiler protection). Does this perhaps mean that he does have a conscience where vampires are concerned? He seems to think that harming a vampire is an offense that should be punished, but would that punishment extend to himself? If he killed a vampire, would he feel guilt or regret? (Again, I've never seen season 1 or 2, so this may have already been dealt with.) Ideas, anyone? Its true that the nights are long in Toronto during the winter BUT in the summer the days are much longer than further south. Someone else mentioned that Vampire stories tend to occur in New Orleans or Toronto. Well then the logical thing for a Vampire to do would be to migrate between the 2. Spend the winter in Toronto (good thing vampires already are cold blooded) and the summer in New Orleans. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Feb 1996 22:45:16 -0500 From: Tippi Blevins <TippiNB@a.......> Subject: <No subject given> ephania Hyde wrote: >Let me ask for your opinions on this one. I think it peeves him to no end, but he does have one. You said you haven't seen seasons 1 or 2, so you didn't see the ep where Lacroix declines to bring across his One True Love, Fleur. It took a lot of restraint. In fact, Lacroix seems to have *more* of a conscience since becoming a vampire. I just watched AMPH yesterday (thanks Deb!) for the first time and Uncle dearest was *not* the nicest guy in the world. But he *did* look pretty nifty in a toga. And what is a conscience after all? It's a fear of repercussion. We either fear retribution in the afterlife or in THIS life. We'll either go to Hell or jail (do not pass go, do not collect $200) for the mistakes we make. Animals are able to kill each other without feeling guilty about it because they don't have a religion and they don't have little animal jails. ;) However, if you plan on living forever (and Lacroix seems to) and you live carefully (avoid the long arm of the law), you need not fear the consequences of your actions. *However*, Nick *does* have a conscience simply because he *does* plan on being mortal again and therefore would have to face both mortal laws and a couple thousand angry souls in the Great Thereafter. We human folks aren't born with a conscience -- if we were, our parents wouldn't have to admonish us not to hit people, not to bite the doctor, and that we should share our toys. ;) Wicked Cousin Tippi ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Feb 1996 22:51:39 -0500 From: Sandra Gray <TMP_HARKINS@d.......> Subject: FK tapes Marg's letter about the 35 responses made me wonder if it was worthwhile to ask TPTB to bring out Dark Knight and Dark Knight: the Second Chapter, which together on one videotape would make a movie. The original Nick Knight was released on videotape. I think both Dark Knight's would be a good vampire film and if they were available for rent in video rental stores would maybe generate new fan interest in the show itself. Prospects for doing more tapes might increase if the initial Dark Knight tape was successful sales wise. So does anyone think this is worth a shot? It might be a source of income for TriStar, after all. I'd buy one. :) Maybe MPI (who does the Dark Shadows tapes) would be interested. --Sandra Gray, forever Knightie --tmp_harkins@d....... ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Feb 1996 23:03:06 EST From: MS LYNNE R ACKERMAN <GNBV32C@p.......> Subject: Ger's play I phoned the place where Ger is doing the play in April and they said they have no information about it yet, but will have it on the 15th and will send it to me then. Many of the enclosures have a "local theme" (so to speak), ie., they are at least _supposed_ to look like the animals' homes - although in most cases, this principle isn't particularly well observed.
