Subject: Nick Being Brought Across

Since I accidently put the wrong subject header onto a message I sent out
on Feb. 8, I don't know whether this is not a subject of interest for
discussion or if it merely means noone was interested in the post labeled
"Re:Nick and Children". I won't repost it but I'd like to summarize my
question. This is in response to someone who speculated maybe it took
being really drunk at the banquet shown in a flashback.

Would Nick have been facing the prospect of being physically unable to be
a fighting knight within a few years? (Think pro American football player
in his mid-thirties - but with even more strenuous physical demands.) Would
staying young and immortal have appealed as a very attractive alternative to
becoming a trainer of younger knights and hoping his services to his lord
were appreciated enough to allow him to live out his old age in the castle?

Sorry if this is a repeat of a prior discussion - I've only been on the
list about a week.

Well, we could look at it this way, "When in Rome do as the Romans do" :)

Actually I think that LaCroix is just trying to "blend in" with the
masses, its the kind of clientele that he is attracting. I think he's a very
adaptable kinda guy.

Good point. A dear friend pointed that out to me last night while I was
whining to her about it. Altho, this does nothing to ease the disturbing
quality of such a statement coming from Uncle's lips.

I think it's safe to say that Vachon will become something at least a
little different from LaCroix and Nicholas.

When Vesuvius did the maximum flash in 79 A.D. the world was a savage
place. A vampire living in those times wouldn't be able to stop from
killing, information on human physiology was just too scant and inaccurate.
Even if killing could have been avoided, the vampire would probably have
done so anyway. The power and immortality would have been too tempting.
Such was the way of the world at the time.

LaCroix is a reflection of 1,917 years of living a blood thirsty existence
in a world that didn't understand much of anything. He is older than
religions. His power is the strength of his conviction, of his immortality,
of his superiority to the human condition because to have been otherwise
would be to invite maddness. Who could develope traditional morals when
killing is an unavoidable portion of your life... and it feels good?

Nicholas fought in Crusades. The world had seen the birth of the idea of
equality in the eyes of god that would grow and develope over the
centuries. Even today we have to live with the results of that idea, see it
change before our eyes, watch it become something we never dreamt as
Nicholas has done since 1228 A.D.

Nicholas is a reflection of 768 years of living in a world that slowly
became a gentler place. The idea of Good and Evil are firmly in his
upbringing. His faith tells him that the human condition is perfection cast
in the image of god and the vampire a dark shadow of that image. He sees
LaCroix as too brutal, too immoral. What he doesn't see is the luxury of
his position, living in an age that allows that degree of kindness.

In some unknown future, perhaps Vachon will see Nicholas as too extreme,
insane, or brutal. The curse of the vampire... ' We make them vampires to
have companions through the ages, but we cannot give them the experiences.
They cannot taste the wine we have drunk or the visions we have seen
because they are gone now... and the younger curse us and are never our
true companion because they can never understand what we have eaten or
seen.'

At least, that's my opinion. All virtual hershey kisses or virtual flaming
stakes my way. ::grin::

I was just there for a concert to-night(T-SP is the home of Tafelmusik,
Toronto's baroque orchestra). There are 750 seats, all pews and a tiny
apron stage. About 180 seats in the nave, the rest in a U-shaped

I can't argue that! The opening of "Hearts of Darkness" is proof positive
that USA had to leave their grubby little fingerprints all over a good show.

Even if they do permanently pull the plug on the show <knock on wood>
I doubt anyone will ever be able to watch that episode without seeing the

Oh I dunno, I tend to think the world is still pretty savage. You ever try to
get into Macy's during their one day sale? Talk about a bloodbath! ;)

I think a vampire's killing sprees 2000 years ago had more to do with
lawlessness than ignorance. Consider that even 100 years ago a vampire could
kill without repercussion, because laws were not set up to deal with
intelligent criminals. Nowadays, there's DNA typing, computer technology...
and let's not forget psychic detectives (urgh!). ;)

I mean, the Egyptians were performing intricate brain surgery thousands of
years ago. They were cutting open bodies to prepare for mummification --
they knew lots about anatomy.

>LaCroix is a reflection of 1,917 years of living a blood thirsty existence

I think this is the mistake of us modern folk thinking that progress equates
improvement. We still don't understand much -- think about what people 200
years from now are going to say about *our* ignorance! :) There's a
wonderful line in The Lion in Winter where Katherine Hepburn says something
like, "It's 1180 -- we're not barbarians anymore!" It's all perspective. ;)

>He is older than religions.

Not older than his own religion of gods and goddesses. Not older than
paganism or Zoroastrianism.

>Nicholas fought in Crusades. The world had seen the birth of the idea of

Not much equality-espousing in the Crusades, I'm afraid. The Muslims weren't
considered equal by the Crusaders! (And maybe vice versa?)

Zillah, I hope you don't take this as a personal attack on you. :) You have
so many interesting ideas that I just couldn't help myself! :)

and claim your warm fuzzies.

The Warm Fuzzies were created by me during a moment of creative insanity,
as a present for the list, to boost morale and make people smile.

Subsequently, a non-virtual version of the Warm Fuzzies was developed,
semi-mass-produced (you shoulda seen my room that day) and shipped to the
cast and crew in Toronto. Posts from various sources indicate that Warm
Fuzziness has indeed been successfully spread.

More Warm Fuzziness is currently in the works :-)

In the meantime, I would like to encourage ALL listmembers to visit the
above-referenced URL and claim your warm fuzzies. (You can even download
them if you want!)

Send the URL to your non-FK friends for warm fuzzies, too. Hey, everyone

Interesting ideas, Zillah (what was that quote from, btw?). But I
don't know that Vachon would come to think Nick was that different.
There's only a couple of centuries separating them age wise. I
would think Vachon came from just about as religious a background as
Nick. Someone brought across closer to the present day might view
older vampires like Nick or LC differently, however.

Hey, I love the show and the character interactions too, but like you, I am
NOT a vampire fan. I don't watch the show because I "love" vampires or
approve of what they do to feed: kill people. I enjoy the angst that comes
from Nick's guilt at being a member of the undead; I enjoy LaCroix's delight
in his own kind, I enjoy the conflict between the vampires and the mortals in
their relationships, whether predator/prey or friend/lover or cop/criminal.
But I have to disagree that vampires are "just different". If someone
attacks and kills you, for ANY reason, I doubt you would regard them as "just
different". You can't afford to, no matter how sad or misunderstood or cute
or needful they are. This is not "evil"....it's simply a very large PROBLEM,
and overlooking that problem because you might believe it to be controversial
to some with devout theological beliefs, or minimizing that problem because
it might upset some devout admirers of the characters on the show is
unrealistic.

According to the Internet Movie Database, FK star Geraint
Wyn Davies was also in the tv movie The Bionic Showdown:
The Six Million Dollar Man and the Bonic Woman (1989).
(Maybe that is where Parriott and Wyn Davies first met??)
Hmmm...

BTW, Wyn Davies was also in Airwolf, for those that remember

would have never come up with that piece of data on my

Also, someone asked about Wyn Davies height. According
to the movie biographical database, the answer is 6 feet.

Is there anyone (or do you know of anyone) in the general Grand Rapids, MI

I only know of *2* people (including myself) who have called or written to
the station. That won't get them to ask TriStar for a 4th season! Please
help me find other fans in the general Grand Rapids, MI area.

FK apparently is not all that important to WZZM since they are pre-empting
"Human Factor" for some movie. They do not plan to show it at all! I'm
bummed to say the least. They also do not plan to include it in their fall

I don't know if anyone has brought this up before, but....

Vachon is described by TPTB at FK as a "Lost Boy" vampire. Someone many
moons ago, told me this was in reference to the type of vampires seen in the
movie _The Lost Boys_ ; mean, delinquent, biker types. But what if TPTB
were refering more to _Peter Pan and the Lost Boys_; the boys who never grow
up, and who get to *play* pirates and indians all the time but never have to
be responsible for anything or to anyone. Same concept, but different
personality.

If true, could Tracy then be equated with Wendy Darling, the girl Peter sees
as grown-up, but who is still a child herself, still living in the nursery,
still daddy's little girl.

seen Nat look at a few victims and say, "Fang marks!" to Nick _sotto voce_ .
Which begs the question: If FK vamps can seal their victims' wounds, why

Does this mean that FK vamps either a.) *can't* seal up fang wounds, or

I *am* a vampire fan (have seen almost every vampire movie available in this

why I watch FK. Maybe it's the immortality thing - I watch "Highlander" too.
Why, in fact, *do* we watch FK? I suppose each of us has a different reason

Well, if they were human, no. But Nick and co aren't human. If I went into
the Raven and managed to hook up with a vampire and get bitten, it would be
my own fault for going there. Like when you go to the Kruger National Park,
you don't get out of your car in case you get eaten by the lions (and it has
happened). But I don't think lions are evil for eating people.

the wounds they make. I was thinking that if the vamp is biting
into an artery or a vein and for some reason didn't drain that person
dry, was there some way to seal the wound enough so that the person
wouldn't just keep spurting blood all over. I didn't mean that the
fang marks would totally heal over to invisibility. I would think
that would be impossible to accomplish so quickly on an ordinary
human. It's pretty clear from the show that the vampires leave
visible evidence of their attacks (in fact, I can't recall any
instance where we *haven't* seen fang marks left behind).

Of course maybe the reason we don't see a lot of blood is because
the vamps a) drain their victims dry, b) loss of less blood causes
death from shock, c)blood not reaching the brain makes people die
quicker, or d)?. If the person dies, the lack of much blood from the
wounds might simply be due to the heart having stopped so the blood
isn't being pumped anymore.

Cool. I would definately like to know if they start airing those episodes.

In first aid class they taught us that a person can bleed to death in
about 4 seconds from the femoral artery (in the thigh/groin - the brachial
artery is in the upper arm). Also that the loss of only a quart of blood
is life threatening.

We might then conclude that FK vampires, when they choose to kill their
victims, can feed from any major artery and accomplish their purpose
fairly quickly. Additionally that they need not drain their victims
completely to accomplish the deed.

If, on the other hand, they intend only to sip they would avoid piercing
an artery. Surely not too difficult a task given their preternaturally
acute senses and their affinity for blood.

In either case there would be little blood flowing once the act was
complete. The natural elasticity of the blood vessel and surrounding
tissues (especially muscle) would slow any residual flow. If the victim
were dead there would be no heartbeat to pump out blood.

There might also be a component in the vampire's saliva that would serve
to quickly clot the blood, and maybe even speed healing in still living
victims.

Hmmm....a boy who never has to be responsible for anything?
Would this explain why Vachon never brushes his hair or shaves?

Just a thought.

Well, I have a vote for best site for "vampire school"; "Transylvania
University" in Kentucky. When I walked around that place a few
summers ago, I picked up a souvenir sweatshirt...I understand they
sell a *lot* of souvenir products...I wonder why? ;)

BTW When I entered a linguistics class I'm currently taking, a few
days ago, the instructor was in the midst of a mini-lecture on "The
Morphology of SPAM." NO! NO! I can't get *away* from the stuff!

I wonder if Nat should put that muzzle on Nick before they go off on
the much-discussed "date." I have a weird image of nick, in a
muzzle, on the end of a leash, being held by Nat. "Please curb your vampire..."

That's it. Definately bedtime..

Well, before applying, you marinate said muzzle in a garlic oil-holy water

Subject: More info. on FK waves site

Since the response to my BMV and C&C waves has been so positive
(thank you again, to everyone who wrote to tell me how much they were
enjoying them!), I have decided to make my wave site permanent.

I have my wave recording equipment set up again (thanks to my new
"Smart. Very smart" stereo! ;-) so I will be able to record new
waves, and I will be putting up a few sounds at a time, as I make
new ones.

I'll be using the site for waves for other fandoms that I am
interested in too, so there might not always be FK waves there.
I'll announce when I put up new FK waves (assuming this is okay with
the listowners), though, and let you know how long they'll be there
for. People who want to be on a distribution list to receive e-mail
announcing new waves when they appear can fill out the form on my
feedback page.

I am open to suggestions for new waves! If you are interested in a
particular quote or sound, please let me know. Describe the
quote/sound and the scene it's in with enough detail so that I'll be
able to find it easily.

Since Crystal sent me a very nice list of Vachon waves she coveted,
my site will be devoted to Vachon and Screed February 15th-25th. If
any other Vaqueros or Ratpackers have wave requests, please get them
to me before then.

The BMV and C&C sounds will still be up until Valentine's day...
after that, the slacker takes over. ;-)

The site is: http://www.dpcc.com/dpcc/assoc/lpetix/waves/

Thanks again, for all the enthusiasm and support! I really love
hearing from everyone!!

Okay, here's a "ykybw..." that Cynthia and I had in December, but I forgot
to post. We went to the local science museum, which had an exhibit on bats.
One of the items there was a large plaque with facts about bats listed on
it. Among others was listed:
"Vampire bats adopt orphans, and have been known to risk their lives to
share food with less fortunate roost-mates."
Naturally, we both immediately thought of the vampire "family" nearest and
dearest to our own hearts... (And yes, that's an exact quote; I just *knew*
I'd forget it, so I wrote it down. Who, me? Compulsive? Naaaah....) Guess
the only question is just how anxious said orphans are to be adopted, and if
they then spend the rest of their lives in regretting it... [:

Put yourself in Nick's shoes. This is a man who was brought up with the
unshakable belief that ANYTHING that goes against what was the "popular"
judeo-christian ethic of his time was blasphemous. Therefore, anyone
who believed or practiced any behaviour not consistant with that ethic
was condemned to eternal damnation and exile to "Hell" upon death.
No wonder he feels he needs salvation. :)

Dianne is right re: "Physical Therapy". I read it and ... wow! Ummm, have
to admit I carried a copy on my flight to Ft. Lauderdale. Wonderful capture
of the characters here, very good writing, and (pant, pant) very sensual. I
was thankful I had a row to myself so no one would be reading over my
shoulder! It is very well done "erotica" and I, like Dianne, would recommend
it. No muzzle, but the chains worked quite well....
