I don't think Nick *bit* those Germans in "1966" either. I think
he just killed them. We've seen Nick vamp out to catch criminals.
Same thing, imo.

I think the original question was why Nick has been shown *drinking*
human blood when it was said he had given up on it 100 years ago,
wasn't it?

I personally don't think that vampires can have cavities. But, I'd like to
mention an interesting fact: (don't read if you haven't seen Sons of Belial)

In "Sons of Belial", during the exorcism scene, Nick opens his mouth wide,
and this reveals tooth filling! Geraint has cavities, not Nick. So this is
a little error of the FK team! :)

Actually, in a lecture last week, the prof. mentioned that the
father of Nicholas of Cologne (who led the German contingent of
the Children's Crusade) was reputedly lynched by a mob in Cologne
who didn't like all those strange goings-on...

Just a little tidbit from the pseudo-historian :)

You know you've been trying to write too much fanfic lately when the
following happens:
A while ago, my friend Lyn downloaded a virtual reality dog onto her
computer. She named it Galadriel after a new vamp character we created. In
addition, Lyn inserted a dog just like her computer buddy into the story
we were writing. One day, recently, Lyn discovered that she couldn't boot
up Galadriel the dog when she wanted to play with her. There was a glitch.
She said that Gala, as she called the dog for short, had gone to computer
dog heaven. I said "Well, at least she'll live on in fanfic." :) :)

>whatever it might exactly be? <G> (It's a War Five reference, for those who
>didn't participate).

I have to sheepishly admit that I've been on the list about 5 months and I
still don't get all the acronyms. Sometimes I can make an educated guess,
but ROTFL!! still eludes me. Can anyone clear up my foggy understanding?

Felicia B. says (all of this is taken from the 2-7-96 digest) about what
Nick should do for Nat to prove his love:
>1.) Take her out, *in public*.

Another point I'm clueless about. I live in southwest Virginia, admittedly
in the boonies, but I was wondering where they would go if they did date?
If Nick and Nat both work the night shift (I'm assuming 12-8 a.m. which is
the normal third shift where I come from, or maybe 8 p.m.-4 a.m. in Nick's
case, since he has to get in his hours from dusk 'til dawn), when are they
supposed to go out for a "nice" date? What's open in Toronto when and where
it's dark enough not to fry Nick, safe enough to not have to rescue Natalie
from the other patrons, and private enough so no one notices the pale guy
who doesn't eat. I guess they'd have to go out on some night when neither
of them has to work, but I don't think I've ever seen Nick on a day when he
had an entire day off. What would he do with that much free time if he's
not dating Natalie? In which case, he's taking her out, we just don't get
to see it. I wonder what they're doing?

Felicia says:
>2.) Say, "*I love you*.
>
>No ifs, ands, or buts. "I care about you" is not acceptable in this case.
I agree with this. I remember hearing him say that on some episode and
thinking, "What a copout! Natalie, honey, go find someone to fall in love
with. Nick would still care about you, and at least you'd be getting more
emotional support than you do now, and you wouldn't be spending all your
spare time giving almost everything to someone who can't or won't give
anything back."

Hello again,
The other day I sent my first post to this list and included a story
idea involving Nick possibly being an ancestor of Tracy. I received
two very nice replys. Unfortunately, shortly afterwards my mailer
went "wonky" and I lost a lot of mail--including those two messages!
I don't remember who sent them or if they came by way of the list or
as private e-mail. So, I would like to thank you (whoever you were)
on-list--if no one minds!

Firstly: To the Nice Person who suggested that I try to write the
story--thank you for your lovely words of encouragement! I'll really
think about it, really, really hard! Maybe another story idea(I already
have another!) if not this one.

Secondly: To the Nice Person who actually asked me(!!!) if she/he could
use my idea to write a story--Go For It!!! I would like to see what you
could do with it(besides, it would take me a long time to get around to
it my self).
Thanks all, for your patience.

Subject: Percentage of water/blood in the human/vampire body

Hi all!

I'm sorry, but I think this post is completely off-topic.

Some of you folks have been discussing about why vampires would have blood
tears. I've seen many interesting answers, but I must let you know that
someone made a small mistake. They said the body was composed of 90% water,
thus suggesting that a vampire's body would be composed of blood in a
similar percentage. This is wrong! In school, I learned that the body is
made around 70% water, which, I think, makes more sense. 90% is way too
much. I may be wrong, but I looked back at my notes from Biology courses,
and that's the answer I got.

I told you this was off-topic, but I wanted to say that anyway. :)

Can't help with the article or a magazine, but I can help with the

might have missed it: I can send anyone a perfect copy of the ad, the same
one I sent EM, if you send me SASE. I can print it off letter sized (8.5 by
11) and the original NATPE-ad ledger size (I think that's 11 by 16.) Just let
me know which one you want and make sure your SASE is the correct size for
what you want. If you send me a teensy little envelope and ask for the
biggie-sooper-sized ad, I'll have to fold it up really small, and the postage
won't be enough.

I will be happy to send you the nomination form by snail mail (not

possible and get those nominations in. If we don't nominate, we don't make
the ballot and there will be no award for Forever Knight fiction this year.

4. There's a lovely listing of Forever Knight at the YPN (Your Personal

From: Stephania Hyde <Step68@a.......>
Subject: Vachon: Growing up?

In an earlier message I said (to summarize) that Nick needed to become human
so that he would stop feeling the need to kill people. Since he feels that
people are PEOPLE, he would have to stop feeling the need to kill them before
he could be redeemed. LaCroix, on the other hand, views people more as
snacks, and thus does not feel that he needs to be redeemed. In reply, Nancy
Fralic writes:

>But where does that leave Vachon, who has told Tracy that he has had to
>deal with being the one left behind, having lost many mortal friends?

Ooh, good question! I'll throw in my $.02 on this one. I (personally) view
Vachon as still being in the "adolescent" phase of being a vampire, you know,
the phase where if something feels good you just do it. At the adolescent
phase in a human being, we all seem to get self-absorbed (I know what I'm
doing, nobody understands me, etc.). Few of us stop to think of the
ramifications of our actions during that time of our life; if we want to do
something, we do it and to h*ll with the consequences. I feel like Vachon is
in that phase of his vampiric life.

I also think Vachon is coming out of this phase. He finally faced up to his
responsibility to the Inca, a very grown-up thing to do. He also made some
comment to the effect of "do you ever long for the days when you could see
something (a pretty girl) like that and just take her?". That comment
implies to me that he realizes he can't just do whatever he wants to, without
culpability or regret. I think he is on the verge of manhood
(vampire-hood?).

Now, let me ask y'all a question or two. I've never seen the first or second
season, but I understand that some of the flashbacks show Nick when he was in
a "Happy Hunter" type phase (I'm a vampire and not ashamed of it!). This
sounds like the same kind of "adolescent" phase as I see Vachon going
through. Are there any similarities between Vachon now and Nick as he was?
Also, if Vachon is on the verge of becoming a grown-up, do you think he will
become like LaCroix, Nick, or some other type of individual altogether?

Discuss!

Wow, Cassie, when you introduce a topic, you really introduce a topic!

Cassie Carter writes:
>What other shows...has JP produced and/or written?

In watching SciFi Channel, I noticed that JP produce (and has written
for) The Invisible Man series that starred David McCallum. I don't
know what else he's been involved with outside of FK. Bedard and
Lalonde of FK used to work on Beauty and the Beast. Gillian Horvath
works on Highlander.

>What is the overall significance of superhuman characters whose
>superhuman powers must remain secret?

Maybe people would like to think that they are different from other
people, special in some way? Humans have a tendency to think they
are the highest form of life around. Maybe it feeds our egos a bit
to imagine that we are even better than we think we are? :)

>Why are such characters so *appealing*, whether or not they use
>their powers for "good deeds"?

Because they're fun? There are people who don't care to watch
science fiction, fantasy, horror or other films/tv that have any
sort of "strange" characters in them so I think that to some extent
appeal depends on a person's personality. Some people like the
exercise in imagination such characters can create. I know that in
my case, the "stranger" shows have always appealed to me and
within the science fiction framework, I usually am more attracted
to the *alien* characters (or the "robotic" in the case of Data
on TNG) rather than the ordinary humans. It's fun to try to put
oneself into the "alien" frame of mind and existence.

>*why* do we find these characters so interesting?

Well, I sort of said why *I* did above. I wonder whether people who
enjoy more "realistic" drama find things like vampires, aliens,
Superman, whatever as interesting.

>Where do we draw the line when we decide we *don't* like a superhuman
>character?

I think that depends on a person's own moral sensibilities and
variates from person to person. For instance, I *hate* LC, mostly
because I view his deliberate selfishness in trying to make Nick
what he wants him to be as evil. He has shown no compunction in
torturing Nick or trying to undermine Nick's moral sensibilities in
order to achieve that aim of making Nick *his* sort of vampire.

>To what extent does the "rightness" or "wrongness" of a superhuman
>character's use of his/her powers determine whether we like them?

I personally don't like superhuman characters who use their powers
to engage in wanton destruction for the sole purpose of lording it
over those who don't have those powers. That doesn't mean, though,
that I don't think such characters can't have their use to a story.
Often they're characters I like to hate. ;) If every superhuman
character was a good guy, things would get very boring. I used to
watched the "bionic twins" and they're fine for just light entertainment,
but the shows that impact more on me are the ones where the superhuman
characters deal with moral issues or have other experiences that can
make me think or stimulate my imagination.

I must confess to having a longstanding interest in vampires such
that even in films or shows where the vampire is just the monster
to be destroyed I can find some enjoyment in watching. I get more
enjoyment out of the shows that look at life from the vampire's
viewpoint as well as the mortal viewpoint though.

Another element that draws me to vampires is that I find most of them
sexy also. ;)

>Do we like "evil" superhumans? Why or why not?

I guess I answered that one above from a personal standpoint. I
would guess that some of the attraction people might have to "evil"
superhumans is that they get to do what most of us can't do in
real life--do almost whatever they want. They don't like someone,
they eliminate them. They want something, they take it. We don't
usually have such complete freedom as ordinary humans.

>To what extent is ambiguity itself appealing?

Ambiguity itself can be appealing when you can imagine the reasons
for the ambiguities. Trying to penetrate the secrets and get to
the truth has its appeal.

Please forgive the cut-off ends of lines -- they sent the message back
to me and I thought you might want to know what I said to them.
I got back an answer today from someone called Pam Carder, but I don't
know what her title is exactly. She wrote "Thanks for your comments
regarding "Forever Knight." We will definitely pass them on to the
distributor. This may be a futile attempt, as I have heard it will not
be back next year, but you never know."

I just thought you wanted to hear from another station response. Is
there any more word from anyone? Has anyone heard from James Parriott
to find out how recent the Boston Herald interview (in which he said
that he was flattered, but uncertain how much good the internet folks
would do) was? Has anyone heard from him more recently than the
"Thanks, I am lucky to have fans like you" message?
When do we expect to hear anything more?

You mean you *haven't* caught her hawking Pepsid AC on the networks? It's
the voice that makes you notice her. The little "uulgh" she says for
heartburn is identical to the noise she makes when looking at something
unpleasant (like Screed's rats) on FK.

What about this, then...

What if what we see as "blood tears" isn't really blood?

Take as an example Nicholas' blood oozing back into him as he lay on
Natalie's table in "Only The Lonely" and her aim, or lack there of, with
her needle in "Night In Question." It would seem the vampire body knows
what to do with the blood, without the traditional digestive process.

HYPOTHESIS: Does the blood go through a much finer 'digestive' process
whereby portions of the whole blood are used to do different things?

This would mean that the substance the body would use to lubricate itself
(sweat, tears, etc) might be blood product that has been metabolized in
some fashion but is still tainted red by the remainder.

In other words, blood tears. ::grins::

My thoughts on the subject.

Actually, I am a religious person. I watch FK bacause Nick is searching for
salvation and redemption - which is the base of Christianity, the religion I
profess. There are things I don't like about the show; I've seen some
things that clash with the faith I have. However, I overlook those things
in hope that Nick will find his mortality. But also, as writer, I adore the
characterization - all of the characters are so well written that I can't
help but to fall into their lives. And even I have problems with that - the
writers have been so wishy-washy this last season. For example - Lacroix
saying "Let's get naked" in Hearts of Darkness. Really. I can't imagine a
former roman general saying that - it's so...common.

I'll get off of my soap box now.

What's that going to do for him? Nick's not a Q, he's a vampire. He
tried not drinking blood, and almost starved himself, (Dark Knight, etc) if
he has the ability's he should use them for good, and still continue his
search. Personally I think he should give up his quest and go back to
Janette, but hey... can't blame a girl for dreaming. BTW: I got sent a
message from Listserv a few hours ago saying my subscribtion had been changed

someone e-mail me *off-list* and tell me if they have a clew?

When they *feel like it*?!!!!! That's nutso!!!! If Duncan didn't kill
he'd be dead. That's self defense which is certainly legal. And Nick kills
to survive!!! Humans eat meat, does that make them mass murderers? I don't
think so!!!

Self defense is very different from just killing when one feels like it.
It's not as if Duncan runs through town chopping off and immie's head he
sees. And it's not like Nick, *Ever* just bit every single person he saw.
They kill when they *need* too. Not when they feel like it.

Subject: A "Goodies" Idea

Here it is just 10 days or so away from the wildest holiday in South
Louisiana and it has not occurred to me until now to suggest "King Cakes" as
gifts for Syndies, KK and JonF. There are several local companies which
ship the delicious confections for a reasonable cost (I'll check into
costs/quality if anybody is interested). I'd like to send at least one to
KK and JonF (and maybe the set - they always have food there, don't they?),
but am on a very limited income. It'll be around $100 and I can put in $20.
Any takers?
